"Prey (Dan Trachtenberg, 2022)"

Saw this shit Monday night.

Disney fucking up. You don't drop a PREDATOR movie this hard straight to Hulu.

So glad I got to see this shit in a theater. This is my favorite PREDATOR movie so far.

Between this and LEGION, we gotta put Amber Midthunder in more action films.

Glad to hear you think it lived up to its potential. I'll temper my expectations because it takes A LOT for me to really enjoy a blockbuster action movie, but I'm excited for this.

They send the youngins to hunt what they feel are some of the minor level prey as a sort of rite of passage. It could be worlds where things are much higher threat level and the more experienced Predators go to hunt. Which would explain how the humans can win, because these are the lesser experienced ones.

Although I could be completely wrong with what I remember I think that's the reason.

The movies are only made about the few victories.

We the washington Generals, they the Globetrotters. We make movies about our few victories.

Also, Lore wise there is something particularly vicious and evil about humanity that these things may be underestimating. There's a whole back lore about Terminator/skynet; Alien, and Predator involved here.

Don't go down that rabbitt hole...

Perfect analogy. Yeah, Predators (2010) touches on this. Up to that point, Laurence Fishburne’s character is the only human who survived MANY rounds of a hunting game between 2 rival Predator gangs.

>Also, Lore wise there is something particularly vicious and
>evil about humanity that these things may be underestimating.

I think they like the challenge of hunting a species that A) will try to fight back and B) also adapts and learns.

Just so I'm reading what you typed out correctly; are you saying this is movie is as good as the OG Predator movies with Arnold and Danny Glover?

If I remember correctly, it was supposed to be a theatrical release but got dumped to HULU as part of the Fox merger. It's a damn shame because this would have played like gangbusters in the theater.

I couldn't find the Comanche dub because they hid it in the extras tab on Hulu so I watched it in English. I am prob gonna rewatch with the Comanche dub.

Great way to expand the universe/mythology without making us suffer through unnecessary backstory most of it was done just in the Predator's design and weapon's kit. I realize there are comics callbacks and whatnot but I never read any of that and don't care.

The only gratuitous callback was a single line and while I groaned and rolled my eyes at least they showed restraint unlike Top Gun.

Amber Midthunder carried a whole film and really a franchise on her back in this. That's a hell of an accomplishment.

It's a damn shame this didn't get a theatrical release. I'd love to see this as a theatrical double-feature with the PREDATOR.

They siked us out with the first mud scene, because I thought they would show how mud makes prey invisible to the predator’s radar like it did in the original movie.

forbes went into why it probably would have flopped:

https://www.forbes.com/sites/scottmendelson/2022/08/08/movies-box-office-prey-predator-amber-midthunder-arnold-schwarzenegger-disney-hulu/?sh=16556bfa2aa6

me? i'm not so sure, especially because this is the first time in 3 years we've had "summer movies"

plus, for something this well done, even if the initial box office was slow, word of mouth would have started to spread quickly which might have mean a slow burn that ended up growing into a low key blaze.

i know they could have had my $15 dollars at least twice.

who woulda ever predicted that?

i dont see why the audience reception couldnt have been similar to whatever fast and furious movie that was that revived that franchise.

this feels like something they could have expanded the whole universe (in different time periods) after in theaters and on streamers.

i mean...the lost city and uncharted both did over $100 mil domestically i believe (or at least close).

youre telling me a well known property like the predator with strong word of mouth wouldnt have bested those numbers here?

Just look at "The Black Phone" and "Everything, Everywhere, All At Once" this year. Word of mouth has made those two little films into huge hits. I see no reason why "Prey" would not have done the same with a theater release. Whoever wrote that article seems to be trapped in the 2010s.

but it did make me think.

i think Prey would have made a ton of money compared to budget. speaking of budget, i can't find a number, but i'd have to imagine the w/ no big name actors, HUGE set pieces, etc that the budget for this had to be super reasonable.

*ducks*

mouse influence was a little too heavy for my taste. especially for a predator film. all for messaging, but at times it was like MESSAGE (c)

cant put my finger on it but it didnt feel gritty/realistic/authentic. originally i was thinkin it was the way it was shot, but i think it was the story too. i didnt get the sense of urgency like an apocalypto (a lil on the nose but the comparison is apt).

the subtitles on the comanche dub was cheeks. they didnt have separate titles for the non-hearing impaired. found it a little distracting reading . wasnt crazy about the font either. lol that sounds wild nit picky but thats what i was thinkin the whole time. i wound up switchin to english about midway through.

not even sure this is plot hole cuz in the GRAND scheme of the movie this detail doesn't REALLY matter, but i thought re-watching would clear it up (it didn't) because maybe i missed something, but it's this:

the dude who was in the tree w/ her when they were gonna lure the mountain lion...he just like got ripped outta the tree and a) not sure it was the mountail lion or the predator and the predator taking him was "camoflauged" by the lion popping up right then too, and b) like, what happened to him cuz regardless of being lion or Predator, they never addressed if he was hurt/dead/missing/etc.

anyone?

was that it was the predator.

and she was knocked out so she couldnt witness it to pass it along to everyone else.

that scene just seemed to make more sense when the point of it is that the lion (and the damage they assumed it had done) concealed the existence/closeness of the predator.

also her being knocked out prolly saved her life (no longer a threat to the predator) and reinforced that plot point thats pretty central to the movie.

iono i could be remembering it wrong tho lol.

Seemed like he was dispatched with more quickly and efficiently than a Lion would’ve done it. I did think it was weird that the guy wasn’t really mentioned after that though, I thought I had missed something.

i dont think they felt that character was that important other than being another easy kill for the predator. and indirectly showing that her life was spared because she wasnt conscious and wielding a weapon.

that was his only purpose lol.

A few banger action set pieces in there. I wish they'd have used less CGI on the blood/gore. Obviously that's a personal choice, but it just feels less tangible/visceral when the deaths are obvious digital doubles. Especially when it's not necessary-- like, CGI animals, totally get it, but some of those natives/colonizers? Feels like they could've found a way.

Midthunder is fantastic. I liked her a lot on Legion, but she's a revelation here.
