"Vengeance (B.J. Novak, 2022)"

This is a solid dark comedy-drama that gets uber dark in the last ten minutes.

Shoutout to BJ. Didn't know he had this in him. Very happy that trailer doesn't show everything.

pleasantly surprised I was weary on Novak having the chops to carry a movie. He did great. The writing was really good. The 3rd act was solid. Really enjoyed it.

It's overwritten in places-- the end stretch is an endless sea of monologues about The Way Things Are, and while there's a good twist or two in there and certainly some nice turns of phrase, it's just a loooooot of lecturing, lol.

That said, the movie looks good, the pacing is effective, and the dialogue really hums. It's also a nice collection of actors, obviously happy to have such fun dialogue to chew into. And Novak does a smart thing by making himself the shmuck-- there's no real "redemption" angle to turn his character from asshole to lovable, and that's the right choice. Novak just has a shmucky face, lol. He used it well on The Office, he uses it well here.

dialogue was just clever enough without crossing the line

the details of Texas were earnest (both good and bad), having lived here awhile

First 2 acts I dug. The tonal shift of the third act was a lot. The ending was bonkers and I am not sure the right choice. But I guess I usually am a fan of challenging the expectations of the audience. I guess I want to think about it some more.

Trailer was definitely for a different movie.

Didnt even stick around to see if it could be good. I generally hate mostly everything with that name on it.
