It took me a third or maybe more of the movie just to get on its level, because they are throwing big absurd concepts at you from very early on. They just toss you into the deep end and dare you to catch up. Luckily, perhaps halfway through, the ambition, epic scope, earnest commitment to silliness, and heartstring-tugging ultimately won me over, and I spent the last hour or so of the movie pretty delighted at what they were mostly pulling off here.
I've no doubt this will get a lot of "not for me" responses. Think Spike Jonze/Charlie Kaufman on coke and/or MDMA. I'll be interested to see how it holds up upon rewatch, but yeah. I dug it, and I really like what the Daniels are going for so far in their career.

Is there any chance this will get nominations from the major awards shows next year? I'm assuming not because of when the movie came out, but I hope I'm wrong. I believe I read this got a ton of nominations from the indie Spirit Awards, so perhaps this will get the same treatment from the major awards shows? I have no clue what the calendar window is for those awards, hence why I ask you.
Not to sound dismissive of the acting because pretty much all the people in front of the camera deserve major recognition for this flick, but I'm hopefully any and everyone that worked behind the camera for this will get some major award nominations and awards as well. The screenwriting, directing, and editing for this movie were beyond master class. Truly impressive to me how so many literal and figurative moving parts of this movie were stitched together in a believable and cohesive manner.

Wonder how many it'll actually win. I don't watch too many other movies, so I have no clue how good the other movies/actors/actresses are that it's nominated against.

And that was also pretty great, albeit way more conventional than this. It's by Josephine Decker, who did Madeline's Madeline a few years back, which was also terrific. She's got a gift with young actors.

literally so much to take away from this film on so many levels.
probably the most perfect movie title of all time.

That is really the key that makes this film great...even when its exploring some of its more somber themes, there is still a sense of joy in it - like no one sat in a meeting and said, we need to have this ending or this character die for whatever contrived reason.
Its serious when it wants to be serious and its fun when it wants to be.
A complete thought, not a thousand notes from a meeting crammed into a story.
There will be copycats....hopefully whoever uses this film as an inspiration will understand what made it work beyond the technical brilliance on display.

God, they asked a TON of the central family in this. Play yourself as (at least) two or three distinct characters; and do wild, strange fighting stunts; convey the emotional stakes of the universe ending and an intimate family drama at the same time; and also be funny. Absolutely crazy. I really like Michelle Yeoh, so I don't want it to be understood as a knock - but I had no idea she had this in her. Completely wonderful.

This element of the movie reminded me a bit of Tatiana Maslany from Orphan Black(at least from the first 4-5 seasons of the show before it all imploded on itself IMO); convincingly playing different characters all within the same work without it all being too over the top and while servicing the story in a credible manner. Just one of the more impressive aspects of this movie of many that can be brought up.
Also have to mention that Jamie Lee Curtis delved into the playing the different characters role as well, albeit in minor ways.

Totally. And it's so weird because I don't know anything about how acting works, like as a discipline or a job or an art or anything. So all I could think watching Orphan Black (I actually liked the final season, but it sounds like I'm in the minority there) watching her was "Holy crap, that woman is working hard." But doing that AND maintaining the subtlety without making the distinctions between the characters silly and cartoonish? Expert, painstaking, and PATIENT with plot developing. I haven't watched She-Hulk, but I really hope she gets another chance to show what a big star she should be.

YES! She had way less bandwidth to develop this, but she's Jamie Lee Curtis for a reason, I suppose. The question that I had upon seeing her "why is she in this? what even is this role?" was answered in an astonishingly weird way that (apparently) only she could do.

I ended with a sense of wonder and dare I say optimism.
No idea why someone was possessed to write something so heartwarming within such a bizarre premise, but I fucks with this hard. I'll be watching this again, I feel there is SO much I missed here.

I didn't see who they are up against for awards, but I think Yeoh should win. Won't hold my breath tho.
Either way, they did it. This film is a marvel and I hope the story telling and the cinematography and the beautiful quirky details become its own genre and spawn equally inspiring and joyous takes on the human experience.
26. "The fact she and Ke Huy Kwan each won multiple awards" In response to Reply # 25
from other festivals might help to an extent, right? I suppose the voting parties for the other awards shows are different from the Oscars, so I guess that should limit to influence of the other awards a bit.
I haven't watched the other movies they're going against either, so I can't call it too confidently in terms of Michelle Yeoh getting an Oscar.
It would be a shame for a movie so good to get 11 nominations and not come away with a win in one of the major categories it got nominated.

with more bonus material given the Oscar and other awards the movie won.
I hope all the actors will actually get some better scripts as result of this movie. Suppose time will tell if that's the case; I have to assume Stephanie Hsu will probably get the better change of that occurring because of her age, no>

as result of the Oscar awards.
While I still have fear of catching COVID and won't step foot in a theater, hopefully I'll finally tear off the shrink wrapped of the DVD I bought a month or two ago and look at the special features for this flick.
Perhaps I'll be inspired enough to listen to the commentary track.

I pre-order it a week or two ago; got it delivered today. I strongly suggest anyone that's a fan of the movie to get this. The extra art alone put a little smile on my face. Hope I find the time to listen to the extra commentary tracks.

I was thinking the movie was at least 2/3 over when that first chapter card came up and was like "oh no."
I really respect the movie, love what it's done for the careers of the stars, and I really love how much it resonated with people. It just didn't hit for me even though it probably should have.
