"Atlanta, Season Three (Glover, FX, 2022) "

EPs 1 & 2 debut tonight.

The crew is back and Paperboy is on a European tour.

Other shows have copied the offbeat pacing and humor of this show, so it will be interesting to see how folks respond, but I expect the same care and detail that went into highlighting some of the nuances of ATL will be shifted across to Europe and the fish out of water (Paperboy) the fish finding his school (Darius), the fish in the frying pan (Ern) and the flying fish (Van) will make for some hilarity. Hoping that Tracy pops up again this season.

Pretty bold to go so far off the beaten path given how long the show last aired, but that was stellar storytelling nonetheless. The only minor problem I had was the 'why do we keep getting away with it' monologue one of the foster mothers had before the car accident since it was a bit too on the nose for me, but that is minor nitpicking.

According to an incident report following the murders, it was reported that Sarah told a co-worker " she wish someone told her it was okay not to have a big family. Then she and Jennifer would not have adopted the children."

from Wikipedia.

Not as on the nose I supposed but it is still the same sort of not taking responsibility as the line from the show.

However, the phenomenon of lesbian couples from "progressive" enclaves adopting Black children, that I have been in close proximity to (in the DMV) has been so prevalent that I found the whole narrative completely relatable/plausible.

Wild (but not surprising) that this shit was plucked straight from the headlines. I do remember the image of Devonte hugging the cop.

that reparations ep was fantastical.

The commentary around this show is always entertaining, but I often wonder if most people truly get the point (each ep, overall).

*No, not just the convos held on the boards.

I see the critical acclaim and criticism and still wonder if anyone's paying attention? As someone previously pointed out: this show once featured an invisible car. I'm almost certain that means that all bets are off regarding expectations or traditions when it comes to storytelling.

I thought we were tuning in because we wanted something fresh, new, not so typical. Something that made you think, pushed the boundaries, forced us to stretch. Like it or not, Glover and crew continue to deliver.

Their writer's room has clearly been lurking here for quite some time.

..to see/hear/receive/respond differently than we might have in the past, present, or future.

They're direct about the impact of our culture on the rest of the world and put layers on display (even to our own detriment).

Our strength. Our tenacity. Endurance.

Our faults, flaws, and issues.

I feel like people get so caught up in the artistic expression or approach chosen that they forget about the overall point:

THIS IS US (f'real), for the hood, the excluded, the exploited, the oppressed, the nerds, the procrastinators, and everyone in between.

isn't made for the hood.

Completely told from the perspective of White Manhattanites and the crazy immigrants they had to deal with isn't groundbreaking, it's an episode of Seinfeld.

Yeah, I get the whole point that this black nanny was more family to the child then his own parents. But it's a point that doesn't need an entire 30 minutes and a story told from a white POV to get across. The whole episode could have been told from a black perspective and still make that point. It was White Gaze.

The initial All Atlanta writers room for the first season gave a truly original and authentic look at black life in Atlanta despite the invisible car and other surreal moments. That's the best point to me.

We don't need another show about white manhattanites. We definitely don't need in done on Atlanta's time and dime.

I am still enjoying this season. But let's not act like the show is flawless and its impossible for them to make wrong choices (and that what we perceive as wrong choices is just them working on a higher level that we aren't able to understand).

It's still a great show, it just doesn't need episodes told from the POV of White People.

While this was the weakest episode of the season so far,
the reparations episode was told from the same POV, and I loved it.

I personally don't want to think the Atlanta writers HAVE to write
from ANY point of view. Just make it good.

..the point being:

Whatever you thought this show should/would be, it isn't.

I'm not suggesting that the show is perfect or that it can't be criticized. Like you, I appreciate that the show isn't beholden to a specific perspective. They started with a show called Atlanta, in Atlanta, about characters from Atlanta. Since then, the show (including the cast and audience) has grown to include a bit more than its initial offerings. I'm fine with that.

An invisible car.
A man with a pet alligator.
An episode about Drake without...Drake.
Paperboi being on a TV show for 30 minutes.
Teddy. Perkins.

Even if the show has changed, the writers told us who they were in previous seasons.

they appreciated her being there for her son, but they knew NOTHING about her. there are plenty of real life Black nannies whose previous lives were of prominence in the professional world. some Black funeraling was thrown in but it was more about how they could be so into their world that they completely have no care for others who are even sharing their same space.

yep, and nicely punctuated by Miles's (only) perking up when he realizes the woman that cared for his child for years is related to a famous NFL player.

at the beginning when Darius/Al first see the guy having bad trip, balled up in the doorway with blanket over him ("oh that's a tourist")..that was like the "and then i kicked her in the pussy!" punchline/ending.

and i still didn't see it coming at all when Al winds up exactly there in the end. (bravo donald..)

..what a way to close out what can only be described as a bizarre season of wanderment. In a world where characters often blur the lines of reality and imagination, we watch Vanelie Get Out with Eyes Wide Shut in one episode.

Like Shanice & Xosha, the audience is immediately thrown into the mix without notice and given the option to go along for the ride. Candice is the lone character given true perspective, but even she's thrown. Often wondering why she's seemingly the only person recognizing just how crazy the situation playing out has truly become.

"..You're cold, Vanessa!.." © Skarsgard

Skarsgard is fucking hilarious! That entire scene is astonishingly creepy and funny at the same time. Its everything The Black Lady Sketch Show wants to be.

"..It was worth the wait!.. The bread was worth the wait!.." © Xosha

Again, pure comedy. Its almost as if the writers deliberately decided to invite black twitter along for one massive watch-party, POV style.

Candice finally confronts Vanelie, prompting the breakdown/through that's been looming all season. From sprinkling crack, to bdsm, this show has everything. The only thing missing from the final flourish was Famous Girl © Christian Rich.

"..Are those hands?.. We've been chasing hands all day?.." © Candice

The wig
The fake accent
The baguette

All that was a stretch, but the hands?

C'MON.

*Please note: The ad sponser run included Chicken Fries © Burger King™.

This wild ride of an ep is a lot of things, but regardless of our opinions, its worth it for Van's admission and explanation of how she arrived in Amsterdam, eventually spiraling out of control in Paris.

Taking the piss, tho?

LOL

Literally and figuratively.

To have the show close with Splash Waterfalls © Ludacris was hilarious.

The bonus scene © Marvel™ was cute.

Like Tarrare, Van's hunger to free herself from her old life was almost insatiable. It started off small. Throwing niggas in pools, stealing wigs. At the final episode, she got a whole new identity.

Tarrare's appetite had him consume a small baby before it was all said and done. The hands meant Van was about to spiral out of control, like Tarrare.

At least that's how I interpreted it.

..I think there's plenty to be gleaned from this season (let alone, the entire series). The layers speak to experiences that vary, depending on the perspective. Most notably, how sometimes the most trivial details can impact the outcome of someone's journey.
