she went from, hey "I'm deeply sorry but I'm going to tell you honestly as a friend what happened, and hope you will understand the situation at hand" to "open your mouth and we'll have your entire family killed" in literally 2 minutes.

I'm pretty certain I'll burn through these episodes quickly this weekend, especially given how cold it'll be outside.

Unfortunately, these block of episodes is only half of the fourth and final season. I wonder when the second half will drop.

it's probably just the way the character is written and not a fault of the actress herself. she literally just makes the same face and body language all the time. i also couldn't buy her rage in episode 7. either shoot the Byrds or stfu with all that. i find myself wanting to turn the volume down whenever she's about to speak.

I would have never been able to describe her disposition that accurately. So when that scene happened my wife and I were like "impatient ! *That's* the word" lol.

And I also love Ruth - she is great and the ending to this "season" was perfect. Her rage is fucking *palpable*.

it kinda bums me out how so many people just see her as caricature.

i can see how people get there because she comes off very one note on the surface but I think she had quite a few moments this season with Wyatt and Marty and even Cosgrove Jr that contrasted that.

That's kind of a premise of the show, thought. That he is emotionally detached enough to be calculating about everything.

Watch one interview with her and you realize she's nothing like the character she plays. Ruth is supposed to be annoying and over the top. Which makers her being the only person with any sort of humanity, that much more believable. She kills it.

its also been long enough that I see him as Marty first and not Michael Bluth

When people say "nothing happened" I interpret that as "not enough people were killed" which is not how I, personally, gauge the quality of a tv show haha.

Thought it was great. I just detest the whole "split a final season in half" practice. It's dumb and done at the expense of the consumer.

This was first half of the last season, so things being unresolved makes sense in that regard.

I wish the whole batch of episodes would be made available all at once, but I wonder if COVID restrictions could have played a hand in filming being delayed.

... since The Sopranos. It's a way to get more and longer-term engagement and "ratings" (or whatever it's called on Netflix).

I personally loathe the practice, I think it makes for a disjointed-feeling final season for all shows that do it, especially when compared to previous seasons. IMO the whole point of a "season" is that it flows and is consistent chronologically and in terms of the storyline(s).

the way she leveraged the Ben thing to the point she could use getting legitimately super upset when talking about him. that's hella twisted.

That investigator guy is annoying as hell

Javi was a great addition as this season's big bad. I was never crazy about the Omar casting. The whole "deal" felt kind of abrupt tho

It was definitely twisted. I was sort of bothered by that too early on. It all felt so ... soulless and gross. Which it is. But the more I think/thought about it the more I appreciated the way her arc was written this season because I feel like it was all a defense mechanism to try and suppress the way she really feels about what they did. And I feel like that notion was further cemented by the fact that Helen and Marty's disconnect this season was so obvious. Ben wasn't his brother and they clearly never had a super close relationship; plus, Marty's general disposition is practicality and calmness in regard to literally anything, so as appalling as it was, I thought Helen's arc actually made a lot of sense. Fight or flight.

>That investigator guy is annoying as hell

Annoying for sure if you're looking at it from the family's perspective but that dude was hilarious and a great addition to the season IMO. Just such a headache of a presence and the actor played that part perfectly. I laughed out loud at like 70% of his scenes. His understated, subtle annoyance just hit me in the funny bone for some reason.

Agreed. Whenever we first saw Omar on the show I was like, wait, this is Mexico's top drug kingpin ?! I never bought that casting. I think he was way more compelling this season, but agree that Javi was a far better villain and was cast way better.

but yeah, well said. She's this combo of cold/calculating yet very emotional/feeling. In contrast to Marty both in the level of Marty's calmness but also Wendy's ruthlessness.
She straight pulled a Walter White when Darlene had a heart attack, then going back to antagonize her more.

Also as mentioned above Charlotte proved she was just like her mom in that moment with Helen's daughter.

If this show ends with anything other than a brutal hilarious death for her i will be extremely extremely disappointed. She is in the running for worst character (as in evil and fucked up) on a tv show ever.

funny thing is while we know the chances of them returning to their nomral lives are next to zero, I think Marty could easily return to being an average milquetoast schnook.
Wendy on the other hand ain't ever giving up the life.

I think they're setting up for that to some extent, at least the way I see it, by bringing up her cheating past.

Some of the other stuff is a little spoilery too ... like Marty getting physical with folks etc. Doesn't spoil anything specific but shows a change in tone for the character who's usually so reserved.

I kinda hated the trailer actually the more I think about it and type here lol.

as much as i love hearing dope hiphop in shows sometimes it just seems so forced and takes you out of the show.

the first part of this season felt like it was written by people on twitter. second part felt like reddit. i did enjoy the second part more overall but it definitely wasn't great.

it has me wondering if my taste changed or if the show did. first season definitely hooked me. i dont remember having any major gripes with 2 or 3. since i watched season 3 i watched the wire and the sopranos for the first time so i dont know if im just being unfair.

The show never reached even close to those levels. Not even Breaking Bad levels, even tho Ozark was more or less a carbon copy of the BB idea.

Ozark was really good, really enjoyable, really entertaining. And to their credit the writers never tried too hard to go much deeper than what was on the screen. In other words they didn't go the Sopranos dream route or try to get too intricate with interwoven storylines. Everything was right there, and they executed that surface-level thing very very well IMO. And ended right when they should've.

highlighted to me how subpar they were. The show probably would have been better served if it only lasted three seasons or if this last season was truncated somehow. Outside of wanting to finish these episodes out of boredom, it was hard for me to care that deeply about the characters. The deaths in these second batch of episodes felt very hollow as well. Overall left with a very meh feeling, which shouldn't be the case given how dramatic and over the top this show is.

8 episodes could have sufficed for everything they did here.

the car crash seemed like pretty pointless tease, but i guess it was just a way to show how these fucks just get away with everything unscaved.
Also the whole musical chairs with the FBI thing felt comical by the time they got to Camilla.

It also didn't help that they released part II at a time when there was soo much other content dropping.
it just wasn't the event they wanted it to be. I still liked it, but def kinda went out with a whimper instead of a bang.

Even Ruth's death, didn't carry the weight one would have thought. You could see it coming the whole episode, the last two I think, and somehow it fell flat. I did enjoy watching Wendy's descent into madness in the last few episodes... like trying to buy off her father and checking herself in to the mental facility. Like goddamn, what a piece of shit lol.

And really, the ending makes me feel like they're gonna try to do a movie.

Not even remotely believable. They wanted to be Breaking Bad in the worst way but couldnt accomplish the things that actually made Breaking Bad believable. That ending was absolute bullshit and didnt even fit with the rest of the show.

I realized not a single member of their family was going to die or get shot or beat up or anything. Wendy somehow survived. Marty beat up a guy in the street. Whole family survived a car crash without a scratch. Dumb ass show, and i still made myself finish.

I dont know. Kill one of the kids. Make the parents realize their actions got one of their kids killed. Kill Wendy. Something. The private eye returned and im like "oh okay, here we go. Repercussions." Nope. The son that hates his parents shows up with a shotgun to save the day. FOH with this show. Lmao

it's frustrating but it makes perfect sense

the execution is another story. they didn't need to split this in 2 parts. they really didn't need the car accident as a pointless teaser, and just to hammer home the point about the Byrdes walking away unscathed. Seems they were basically making them a version of the Kenedys (Mel even mentions it), but it came out clumsy.

the fbi thing was already getting silly when they were gonna transfer it to Javi. By the time it got to Camila it was just comical

idk, i think a tight 8 episode final season could have done wonders for this show. maybe not epic but at least more satisfying.

... that shitty rich people never suffer consequences. In fact they explicitly stated as much *in* the show, in one of the last eps when one of them (I think Wendy ? Maybe Marty. Maybe even both !) said "that's not how the world works" regarding whether or not bad, rich people ever suffer consequences or experience any real karma for all the shitty stuff they do.

Gripe about the execution of that theme all you want, I surely have a few. But they were pretty clear and on the nose about why no one in the family suffered any consequences.

The drug lords were rich, the heroine dealers were rich, the original villains were rich. Seemed like the theme of the show was "the main four characters dont get hurt at all." Even if the show creators were really committed to a theme like that, it could still be done without being so ridiculous. I hate this fucking show. Lmao

the Byrdes are business owners/developers/political consultants who came to town under the guise of improving things.

unlike the Cartel, or the Snells, or the Langmores, or the crooked Sherrif, aka the people who generally will have good run but ultimately wind up dead or in prison, The Byrdes are the white collar criminals who get away because they're privileged frauds who convince people (including themselves) that they're contributing so society.

i agree the execution was sloppy. i'm just not *that* down on it

all artists that were most popular...5-7 years before Ruth Langmore was born? (she's like 20-22 range during the show?----and born in a sparsely-populated rural Missouri..nary a record store presumably in that area surrounding her trailer)

So the obvious explanation is..her older banjo-playing uncle Russ introduced her to 90s NYC underground hip-hop?
