This film was so great, I was not expecting it to be this good.

*STUNNED* is the right word for me, and I rarely have that reaction.

The art styles were so good.

I will probably see this again at least once in the theatre within the next week.

In response to Reply # 0

Everything everyone will say is true. It's great, imaginative, funny, emotional, etc. Everything the first one was in many ways.

But in the spirit of discourse... I have to throw *one* gripe into the mix. And that's the ending-- or lack thereof. The action climax is an absolute barnburner, fucking tremendous stuff... and then the movie goes on for another 15-20 minutes. Which, imo, is fine... if it's the end of the movie. But it's not-- it closes a couple loops from this movie but largely is focused on setting up the second half. And the last big reveal for Miles-- that he's the Prowler in Earth-42-- is *so* obvious and feels honestly drawn out in a way these movies never really do.

So I don't know how I would've ended it-- but the pacing of it makes me wish it had ended closer to the action climax. Or at least closer to the reveal that Miles didn't make it back to his universe. Maybe I'd feel differently if I thought this movie had a natural "ending" (in the way that, say, the John Wick movies feel complete on their own-- this one is way more of a Fast X/Infinity War situation), but if you're going to chop a 5 hour movie in half, I'd have made sure my final beat was as close to the action climax as possible.

Again, this is a SERIOUS nitpick, I realize... but it's the handling of those last 15 minutes and the presence of the cliffhanger that makes me prefer the first movie. I reserve the right to change my mind once I see part 2 next year, maybe the two will blend beautifully and my nitpicks will be erased...

... but for now, I'd put it a small step behind the first Spider-Verse, which means it's still light years ahead of the vast majority of superhero content/studio fare released these days.

I mean it IS named Across The Spiderverse PART 1.

At first I was not liking the "bringing back" of the uncle.
But I really liked the reveal in that, when Miles gets back to "his" universe and his mother asks about his hair, i was like "what" and then he sees his uncle who asks about his braids... made the reveal with Miles looking really dope with his braids, was super cool to me.

To me it could have been “fixed” by just editing the last 20 minutes or so down. You’re spot on about the placement of the climax and how the reveal at the end was so drawn out. They could have shortened all that by making the Prowler reveal happen right after he realizes he’s in the wrong universe. Could have skipped Uncle Aaron and had Miles go back to his room after the convo with his mom while realizing he’s in the wrong universe, to find other Miles right there. That would have kept the cliffhanger closer to the action climax, and would have made the reveal more impactful - it took so long to happen I saw it coming all along.

All that being said - wow this movie was amazing. Took everything great about the first one and ramped it up. More/better character development, even better art/animation design, outstanding music, amazing action beats etc.

Also there were enough twists and turns that I’m really not sure where the next movie will go. I mean it’s not even clear who the main villain in that will be - could be The Spot since he’s supposed to kill Miles’s dad and is his “nemesis”, could be Prowler Miles, could be Miguel. Can’t wait!!!!

It would probably be worth a watch on Prime, with that feature that tells you who's currently in the scene.

If shit didn't come to streaming/Blu-Ray so quickly now, I'd say I need to upgrade my TV before this comes out.

we saw it Saturday
asked him about it this morning and he said it was better than the first one and that he got made because he wanted more

the first one was an existential moment being the parent of a black/latino boy seeing himself in a character that he loved

the second one was a life lesson in the form a film for my son

i really cant wrap my head around how good this film was

We completely forgot this was Part 1.

And as you stated, it clearly showed the dynamics between parent protection and teenage decision making and the need for independence. I appreciated Miles telling his “mom” she was right. On the ride home, my husband and I had a great conversation with our teens about each side’s viewpoint. Other movies/shows tackled the subject, but this one set something off with them.

My only complaint is the sound seemed low at times as I couldn’t understand all the dialogue between Gwen and the bird dude. Could’ve been the theater.

I’m going to rewatch the first one, then see this one again. An awesome movie from beginning to end.

https://thedirect.com/article/spider-verse-2-audio-issues-theaters

Basically they made it too "dynamic" and depending on the speakers and the sound level the dialog intelligibility can suffer.

I think this shows how out of touch some of these film-makers are - I'm looking at the Imax folks too - especially Nolan.

I see some projectionist got an email, here a post from Film-tech:

--I got the following message (after our first round of shows, of course). I couldn't be there for the opening
night, but one of the asst managers told me he manually 'boosted the volume level' in our large auditorium
last night. I was in early this morning and did a personal ear-check in each auditorium and the sound IS
definitely 'soft' so I wound up programming higher level autocues.
I just wanted to give ya'll a heads up in case you're not aware of this already!
We have a mix of Trinnov & QSC processors . Unfortunately our servers & TMS don't have programmable
volume level cues above "0" (equiv to Dolby "7") on the QSC's. I think we can live with that- - but if not, I'll
have add them to the cue library. (I couldn't do that today for reasons not important here)

MESSAGE:

"Dear projectionists!

Ye unsung heroes of the cinematic arts and champions of great film presentation!
Hail to thee and many thanks for showing SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE across the
planet! We understand that films - particularly superhero films - can be loud. We have taken great
pains to mix this film for comfort and dynamics to maximize the moviegoer’s experience and be fun
and vibrant and never punishing. We invite you to play the film at full volume. In our experience this
film in a full house sometimes feels a touch quiet. So: please play it at 7 as intended. In some houses
we have found that 7.5 plays even better and richer especially when the seats are full! Thanks for your
hard work helping audiences enjoy the film, we trust you to give them the immersive bold thrilling
experience only a theater can provide. Excelsior!
Chris & Phil "

From what I heard, and from what a couple of friends who've seen the movie told me, there's quite a bit
of dynamic difference between the music/efx and the dialog. One guy asked me "Did Christopher Nolan
do the sound mix for this movie?"

I'd say it's almost a certainty that he's there. I'm pretty sure that when they showed Gwen gathering up Spider-peeps to help Miles, Hobie was one of them (along with Spider-Ham, Spider-Noir, the Anime Spider, and the Avatar Spider).

I also hope he can get his own film.

There was an action scene or two where it was harder and harder to follow what was being said, but oftentimes it didn't matter if there was action or they were just taking a walk, Kaluuya's voice often seemed mixed at the same frequency as the bass in the soundtrack. And I don't have much history struggling with regional UK accents so it was a little disappointing.

But yea, what they did with his collage-like character design was incredible.

At least Miles is 15 in this thing, so Gwen can't be older than 16...and Hobie kinda seems like he could be anything from 20 to 35, lol. In any case, while they hinted at it for a beat I was glad they didn't put any real effort into a love triangle, both because so much of the charm of Miles/Gwen is that classic will they/won't they being held at such arm's length by the separate universes problem, but also that if they ever had time to just hang out they'd do anything for that moment.

I think if they leaned all the way in and made Hobie the punk-ass devil may care guy Miles could never be that sprung Gwen open at summer camp (I loved whoever it was on The Big Picture that brought up the summer camp metaphor for Miguel's fortress, by the way - I think Sean?) it would've been a really unnecessary sour note in a movie that talks about a lot of really heavy ideas about what it means to respect your history while making your own future - and even more pointedly uses centuries of artistic methods to plaster that idea all over every frame - it would've been kind of lame if the C plot of this movie was Miles trying to prove to Gwen that Hobie isn't all that.

Instead, Hobie got to pretty much just be all that, and whatever the worries the other Spiders had about Miles' reaction to their friendship was smoothly discarded. Or at least, that's how it felt to me. I hope I'm right?

And of course he knew about Miles before meeting him which makes his actions even more profound
He got close to Gwen because he knew Miles would come one day
and he understood the wave that was going to come and broke the fucking levee
which is the thesis of being punk

One of Across the Spider-Verse’s Most Memorable Scenes Was Animated By a 14-Year-Old

A Toronto kid’s viral fan video caught the attention of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, which landed him a job on one of the year’s best movies.
By Grant Rindner
June 9, 2023

A24 may have an upcoming feature that’s directed by a 17-year-old, but Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has an even younger teenager involved in its striking animation. Preston Mutanga’s animation work impressed Spider-Man writer-producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller so much that they ultimately reached out to Mutanga to animate a particularly memorable sequence in the film.

In early January, Mutanga shared a two-minute recreation of the Across the Spider-Verse trailer that he’d made with the software Blender to resemble Lego bricks. Mutanga lives in Toronto—his parents are a medical physicist and a public health instructor, respectively, but his mother Gisele told the Times that once they “identified that he had that gift, all we could do as parents was to nurture it and let him fly.” Preston had been honing his skills for several years, and working on that particular clip since December 2022. When the video went viral, Miller replied personally, “Well done!!! Where were you in 2014 oh wait you were 6.”

“We found out that it was a 14-year-old kid who made it and we were like, ‘This looks incredibly sophisticated for a non-adult, non-professional to have made,” Miller told the New York Times. “It blew us all away, including some of the best animators in the world.” In addition to their work on the animated Spider-Man films, Lord and Miller also wrote and directed The Lego Movie. It was their heir fellow producer, Christina Steinberg, who actually made contact once it was decided that the movie would include a Lego-centric sequence. Mutanga’s parents were reportedly skeptical that the opportunity was legitimate, but once it was confirmed, his father built him a new computer with a “state-of-the-art graphics card.” Mutanga worked on his sequence over the course of a few weeks, primarily during his high school spring break, meeting regularly with Miller, who oversaw his work and provided feedback.

“I adored the first movie and was so hyped for the second one, so getting to work with the people who actually made this masterpiece was honestly like a dream,” Mutanga told the Times.

Like its predecessor, Across the Spider-Verse has proven to be both a colossal financial success and a critical darling, with audiences praising its humor, imaginativeness, and mix of varied animation styles. Since the breakout success of his trailer recreation, Mutanga has built up quite the social media following. In addition to his riff on the second Spider-Verse trailer, his archives include Lego-style pieces related to everything from Minions to Moon Knight to Better Call Saul.

I saw it for a second time last night. Those first 15 minutes with Gwen still stand out for me.

This time:

I really noticed how much Hobie/Spiderpunk was pulling for Miles, and stealing equipment, and telling him how to do the shock, etc.

And I thought : Could Hobie be a not good guy or even bad guy??

So I looked him up and he's not a bad guy here: Hobart Brown (Earth-138) https://marvel.fandom.com/wiki/Hobart_Brown_(Earth-138)

But it turns out that Hobie was introduced as the original The Prowler back in 1969: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prowler_(Marvel_Comics)

Also thinking: What if Miles on Earth-42, a.k.a. The Prowler was a good guy and we just haven't seen enough of him to know that in this movie??

The film is so god that I'm thinking about theories for the next one - kind of like I felt after Empire Strikes Back. (I know SpiderPunk being a bad guy, or not-sog-ood-guy is super far-fetched.)

Note:If there's an Ewok-Spiderman in the next movie then their is no god.

>was a good guy and we just haven't seen enough of him to know
>that in this movie??

Earth 42 seems like a dark timeline overall...there's no Spider-Man and crime is running rampant with the Sinister Six running everything. So maybe in that reality The Prowler actually is a dark hero or anti-hero who is trying to battle the Sinister Six because they are responsible for the death of his dad? So maybe the next movie is Miles helping Miles-42 in one universe and then Miles-42 helping Miles to save his father in the other.

Also - since Miles-42 was SUPPOSED to become Spider-Man but the spider didn't bite him, maybe he ends up becoming Spider-Main in Earth-42 anyways and that ends up fixing the canon event issue that Miguel was so worried about.

He does his Spider-Man shit, but going through breaking and stealing shit, I think he’s being true to the “punk” part of his name. Anti-establishment, with Miguel being the establishment.
