A lot of people that may not have spent money to see it in the theater got to see it on HBO max and probably enjoyed it enough and are invested enough to go see the part 2 in theaters. Which would be great if part 2 does enough numbers to justify them green lighting Children and Messiah.

Children, they could probably pull off and tweak it enough that people would hate it.

I am not sure how you even approach Messiah to make it watchable, much less likable but perhaps Dennis could pull it off and maybe just make his own version of Messiah that onky shares a name/title but a totally different story.

it's the perfect ending as well. Villeneuve even said he wanted to film three Dune movies, because what happens in Messiah is vital to Paul's entire arc.

Children of Dune though...god no. end it before we get there.

just the public announcement because some reviewers were wondering if a sequel would get made (and some of the general public were confused because they missed the "Part I" at the beginning.)

You dont put Part I unless you know you're making a Part II. Putting Part I also allows some of the reviewers to ease up because its not really a stand-alone film.

Then I watched it again. And again. And realized its once of the best Sci-fi movies ever made.

Maybe it's been building some "cult" status on streaming but the studio was pretty loudly calling that a flop from what I remember and I doubt they let him do something with a "big IP" like that that's closer to the scale of Enemy or Prisoners either.

Even Denis is quick to thank Arrival for allowing him to do Dune after disappointing the shareholders so thoroughly. The only way he gets another crack at that world, assuming he even wants to, is Dune 2 being bigger than Endgame or some shit.

At which point they probably demand he figure out how to convince audiences a worm-man-god is acceptable blockbuster fodder, lol.

Someone here convinced me to give a second viewing of every Denis Villeneuve movie I had seen and I was shocked that all of them were way better than I remembered...except Bladerunner.

It had all the visuals that make his movies dope, but it's also a tough watch.

This video kind of explains why

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7fcf4oaxfQ

I think its a movie I will go back and watch every few years, but I do understand why it failed and I think there is actually a better movie in there with some editing and a few other different choices.

Is *any* of the dialog from the books?

Okay, Gurney's young pup line was, as was "He who can destroy a thing has the real control of it," but the vast majority was new (and not nearly as good as the books.)

"This world is beyond cruelty."

"You've been fighting Harkonnens for decades, my family's been fighting them for centuries."

"Do you believe in Paul?! We! Believe! IN.. FREMEN!!!!"

"I got that, thanks!!"

RELOAD!!!!!!!!

This dialog is clunky AF.

I guess he's focused on the visuals more than the power of the story.

Instead of paying their actor and writers the pittance they're asking for OR just coming up with a great marketing campaign, WB has decided to delay the movie to a fucking absurd date.

Somehow bigger in scope and scale. Didn't think that was possible to be honest. But also more intimate and character based.

Incredible action sequences in this. Proves that art can be in big budget blockbusters.

Since, it's from Chani's point of view, I'm glad that it's a tragic tale of religion and power. Anyone else would've framed this as a heroic rise rather than a tragic fall.

Truly haven't seen it fully until I see it in IMAX. Dying to see this again in IMAX 70mm.

I wish my first time seeing this was in IMAX.

They showed a peek in IMAX 70mm before TENET, and I was mad. It's just not the same as watching it on a regular screen. Fuck, I may see it in regular 70mm.

This movie gets better on a rewatch. Probably the best cautionary white savior story ever told. The fact the movie knows that and frames it in a bad way is amazing. This is seriously the best production designed movie.

Today's screening was presented in Dolby Vision with Dolby Atmos sound. Holy shit. See this large and loud in the best way possible.

Dying to see the film print on the 8-story IMAX. The 6 minute preview before TENET looked absolutely amazing in that format.

Great Q&A with Denis afterwards too.

An actual big budget movie where the spectacle works, the effects aren't flat, smeary, and cheap-looking, and the look and sound of the movie has identifiable artistic vision. Love when this happens!

Also, like the first, a big-budget movie that leans into sincerity rather than smirky quippiness. People might say it's corny, because they're used to one-liners defusing sincere moments. I say make every movie like this. Showing an audience you can be clever isn't hard. Making an audience care is *incredibly* hard.

Worth shouting out Chalamet today. He's terrific here. I'm a fan, but he digs deeper here than I knew he had in him. Great, great performance in a movie with a stacked cast. Movie star type shit.

EDIT: originally I said the effect *are* smeary, because I'm an idiot who doesn't double check for typos before posting.

like his work but he's definitely had a "lane" he's stayed in for most of his career -- I knew he could make the first part of Dune work but wasn't sure about the second (Paul becoming the leader of the Fremen)

he nailed it though

Could also pick a good number of Disney/superhero things from the last year or two, like Little Mermaid, Flash, Quantumania, etc. A number of the made-for-Netflix action movies. Things where you feel a sheen over everything, like they made as few decisions before shooting as possible because "fuck it, we'll figure it out in post with computers." So you get muddy lighting, unconvincing digital sets, obvious green screens, a lack of imaginative camera placement/movement because they don't know what the final shot will look like yet, etc.

Basically any movie that costs 200+ million dollars where you think "why does this look like shit?" And the answer is usually "lack of pre-production, indifference to quality of post-production, or both."

In response to Reply # 0

Caught it in 70mm and lost my mind at the visuals and sounds. Denis knows how to make a visual masterpiece. Def going to see it again and maybe a third time.

Now I get that this was made to show the problem of the White Savior. Which is fine, but it lacked some of the finer points in the novel about the politics of the universe and what Paul's jihad against the Harkonnens does to others involved.

No Spacing Guild involvement, the lack of Thufir's role in the downfall of the Harkonnens, and why the Great Houses don't bend the knee were missing. Leaving out Jessica's role as the Reverend Mother and her and Paul teaching the Freemen BG's fighting techniques would've been cool.

I know it was a departure and I like what they did with Chiani, her showing that the legend is just bs to control them yet another way. I wish he had included other story points that help make more sense of that world.

Action was on point though. Wish I could've gotten more of Gurney's fighting, Brolin's my dude.

I'm probably just being nitpicky since Dune is my GOAT sci-fi novel series, but I'm going again.

In response to Reply # 48

is the main theme occurs mostly in Paul's own mind

and lots of explanations of the Bene Gesserit create-a-savior mythology

which are two difficult storytelling techniques to put on a screen

I thought Villenueve was smart to upgrade Chani and make her carry those thoughts with her as a character, instead of Paul constantly wrestling with himself and having vision after vision

the spacing guild, Thufir, Count Fenring are all great Dune subplots but are easily expendable

actually the spacing guild would have been cool, but that needed to have been built from Dune 1 -- explaining the importance of spice to the entire galaxy and why the Emperor himself would be so involved in Arrakis

hopeful part is, part three could be *way* better than Messiah, which I love as a conclusion for Paul but not the smoothest narrative

Those themes have made it one of those unfilmable movies for so long so I know it's hard but you have roughly 4-5 hrs total between the two films, I think there was some time to sneak some of that in.

Count Fenring and Thufir could be left out, but not the Spacing Guild. They're a significant player in the whole series of books, they were part of the entire take out the Atredies plan. As you said, explaining the importance of spice to the whole galaxy, I think it would give more to the viewer than just it being the planet the Bene Gesserit planted its Messiah seed in.

If they do a part three it could be and I would like to see Paul's conclusion and the introduction of the rest of the players in the Dune Universe.

In response to Reply # 0

as much as the first book is one of my favorite reads ever, Herbert skips plenty of details when it comes the actual action. he builds up suspense, context, then hits you with the outcome.

that's where Villeneuve comes in. the whole sequence where Paul first rides a worm is better than anyone could have ever imagined it. the raids against Harkonnen in the desert were more vivid than any in the book. the battle of Arrakeen is what readers dreamed to see on the page, full-blown in all its glory instead of hastily summarized. Paul and Feyd's fight was more chilling and suspenseful on screen, and what I will from now on reference when reading that scene.

even smaller moments, such as drowning a maker and drawing out the water of life -- Villeneuve did it better than the book! I've read those chapters a bunch of times and the movie made it more real to me than what I envisioned.

this is Dune, by a Dune lover and for Dune lovers, on the big screen.

I'd be excited about Messiah because as mentioned above, the movie could really improve upon the book -- especially with the changes to Chani

Children of Dune is a hard no. Villeneuve's talents are much better used making something else fantastic. they can do a HBO limited series or some shit.

See this movie projected on film if you can.

Absolutely gorgeous on film. Makes it feel like an old-school epic.

Just as a head ups, the Alamo Drafthouse Downtown Brooklyn needs a better projectionist. The edges of the frame were slightly out of focus. So the subtitles were a tad blurry. Also not properly masked.

Still have to wait a week and a half before I can see it in IMAX 70mm.

Cool seeing Ebon Moss-Bachrach with his young pre-teen daughter who was very excited to see Timmy. Denis bringing families together.

And I’m so glad I saw this in IMAX on my first viewing when I didn’t know what to expect. There were some scenes that I was just in awe of what I was seeing and hearing. Just incredible visuals and sound design.

I’ve never read the books, never saw any of the other films besides Part 1, etc. That also added to the experience for me. Had that same feeling on the first Dune of not knowing the backstory and that actually feeling GOOD because I could sense all of the depth to the story that wasn’t explained to me in the film. The only comparison I can make to that feeling would be if I’d seen Star Wars in the theater in 77, and feeling all kinds of backstory that I didn’t know. I had that same feeling of depth watching Part 2, but the story was even more engaging as a deconstruction of the white savior archetype as we watch Paul become exactly what he was against.

But wow. Everything in this looked and sounded incredible. From Paul riding the worm for the first time, to the sound of him getting slapped. Just a GREAT time at the theater.

66. "It's not Dune the book - but Dune part 2 is a good movie"

The good:
The action sequences are 100% better in this movie. Part 1's action - to me- was incredibly slow.

There was an *actual* relationship between Chani and Paul that felt organic and earned (but still not the one in the book.)

Jessica's turn to full on GB Rev Mother finally made me feel like she was the Jessica in the books - not exactly the same jessica but much closer.

The effects also seemed like they were *much* improved.

I thought the acting in this one was much better.

The horrible dialog of part 1 was improved in most scenes here (not all of them.)

The bad:
Removing the 2 years of living in the seitch makes Paul's ascendency and desert skills seems unearned. The Freman accepted Jessica and Paul much too quickly.

We never got to see Stilgar - the friend. (I thought Javier Bardam as Stilgard the worshipper was great thought.)

Sietch Tabr being destroyed seemed unearned. If they knew about the seitches then I think logically they also would have moved toward the southern ones - or at least been thinking about it.

Turning Feyd into a "honorable psychopath" seemed stupid to me. HE was always just a beast , like his grandfather.

Feyd stabbing Paul and then walking away and talking seemed the stupidest of all possible moves. He would have finished Paul then gloated.

Alia the Knife was sorely missed.

Lots of other small stuff - but I'll accept this as a move which is not the book.

Presentation:
I saw it in Imax at the Palm Promenade. That theater has been there 25 years and it was my first time in there. Only cost $12.49 - which is half of what other theatres cost in San Diego.

The film was TOO FUCKING LOUD where I saw it. I wore earplugs and it was still very loud. I get that people talking should be understandable and that explosions would be 10000% louder, but I need some normalization in the mix or I feel like *I'm* being shot at.

Next movie:
Maybe Messiah is not the next movie - maybe they do "Paul of Dune" which - while not a great book - could certainly be adapted into a movie based on these movies much easier - introduce the Fenring, Alia, and show the war against some of the houses. Not sure if movie only folks are ready for how sour Messiah is.

68. "Yeah, Denis said he changed a lot so it fits MESSIAH more."

He said the script for MESSIAH is currently going through a third draft.

I clearly see Paul's victory here isn't supposed to be celebrated.

Felt like I was watching 2001 and LAWRENCE OF ARABIA rolled into one. A truly majestic experience.

69. "the Dallas IMAX 70mm either has a broken projector"
In response to Reply # 67

or there is some other reason they aren't playing it in the proper aspect ratio

regardless, I saw it in the biggest Dolby I could and the point of view Paul riding the sandworm as it crashed over the dune was literally perfect

laser projection made everything pop and the individual sounds of the spice harvester's claws hitting the sand one by one -- total immersion
