As much as I love Eternal Sunshine,Spirited Away,and Kill Bill Vol.2,I just have a hard time putting anything ahead of Magnolia.Its a damn shame this movie doesn't get its dederved recognition.

i just saw this movie for the first time a few weeks ago. i need to watch a few more times...but i'd be interested in your take on the frogs. i have my own theory but i'm not that impressed with it.

is that life is so crazy sometimes and so unbelievable (like in the case of pretty much every main character in magnolia) that it might as well rain frogs...so pta made it rain frogs...there's also, of course the films "hidden" references to Exodus 8:2 which follows 8:1 and they say:

1  AND the Lord spake unto Moses, Go unto Pharaoh, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Let my people go, that they may serve me.
2  And if thou refuse to let them go, behold, I will smite all thy borders with frogs.

Where exactly Moses and the Pharoah fit in, I'm not sure

Also, there have been reported cases of frogs falling out of the sky throughout history

so it's not just a gimmick or an unfounded absurdity...but it definitely is open for interpretation

The way the movie is put together,with all the stories interconnecting over such a short period of time,I think that the viewer would reach a point of disbelief with the movie where the whole story is lost on them.So if you throw in something even more sensational,it puts the story front and center and into context.

Or,it could be just random shit,just like the story of the real frog rain.

He said he was writing that script while his dad was dying. When the doctor told him pops wasn't gonna make it, it just didn't compute. He actually had the thought, "You might as well be telling me it's raining frogs'. As a result, he decided to put that scene in the movie.

And like Kungset already said, it's not even PTA's best film.

with the frogs, of course.. but on top of that, too many characters all of a sudden learning profound lessons or coming to enlightened realizations.. like that ever really happens, I wish it was more of a subtle ending that flowed with the first 3/4 of the movie.. Still a really good movie, but I didn't care for the ending. (Also, the intro is kind of misleading with the strange coincidences being displayed, I expected something to that effect at the end.. It was more like 6 degrees of separation)

I couldn't care less about the corniness of the frogs and the biblical references, everything else was just perfect and those controversial events didn't ruin it for me even if they were unnecessary. The pacing, the acting, everything was just perfect. I LOVE Short-Cuts too BTW but Magnolia was more intense... incredible movie...

Edit:and short cuts was, of course, not made in the last ten years, sorry for slipping.

well honestly, i have no idea about the 'Magnolia' movie you speak of, i've never seen it...but Pans Labyrinth came out in 2006 and thats gonna be hard to top in my book. Pans is one of my favorite flicks ever...let alone last 10 years....

It's been close to 20 years since I have seen it.

I was left confused by it and even more confused by all the people who thought it was so great.

The only movie I can remember that was vaguely like it is Cloud Atlas I think, where they also had all these scenes that seemed like climaxes but nothing happen.

Oh well, I am going back in to check it out, will report back.
