"Tijuana Jackson: Purpose Over Prison (Malco, 2020)"

Rented this the other night on Amazon Prime and watched with my wife.

Romany Malco is really flexing his full creative energy on this. He wrote, produced, directed, edited, starred in, and soundtracked this comedy and did it all very well, I thought. I think he put himself in a position to really display his strengths and live up to the potential he showed in movies like The 40-Year Old Virgin.

Filmed in the mockumentary style of The Office or Parks & Rec. It's about a repeat offender, in and out of prison who aspires to be a motivational speaker.

Nice supporting cast as well. Regina Hall plays his childhood friend and P.O. The kid who plays his nephew was really good, too.

I'd say it's worth the rental price to support this entirely independent movie produced outside of the Hollywood system as it is very entertaining. A lot of memorable lines and truly funny moments that accentuate a story with a lot of heart and positive energy.

He even raps his ass off on about half of the songs on the soundtrack. I don't think I have heard him even rap since his College Boyz days (unless the MC Hammer television biopic counts).

Thanks so much for the recommendation. I totally saw this purely off your recommendation and was not disappointed.

It's not perfect and probably needed better modulation of its quieter moments and the non-stop energy of the first half which is a lot of characters yelling at each other. That said, it's funny as shit and really sweet.

TJ is a great character because he's not a buffoon. He's smart, he's talented, he's hard-working and he loves his family but he also just can't put it together and his hemmed up in a system designed to give him no breaks and no real second chances.

Regina Hall is a comedy god. There relationship in the film is one we rarely see, two people with a history and an attraction but also a deep friendship. Their initial job hunt and the way they go from antagonizing each other to having a great time together was so sweet.

Tami, his mom and his nephew are all fantastic.

This should become a low-key cult classic. There are so many fucking quotables that i can't wait to slip into casual conversation.

Good to see him bring TJ to the big screen and without having to compromise his vision

Really enjoyed the whole flick

Throwin up nothin but a peace sign

Victim Of The Ghetto was the jam! That, Brotherhood Creed's "Helluva" s in singles were the first hip hop cassettes I had access to. I wrote those tapes out!

It was a dope surprise when I saw 40 Year Old Virgin and learned that Romany was from CB. I've had a soft spot for dude ever since.
