"Old Guard (Netflix) (Gina Prince-Bythewood 2020) "

It was a pleasant surprise to see a comic book action movie directed by sista guyl Gina Prince-Bythewood of Love and Basketball fame but she delivered.

It was a good Netflix movie which deserves a bigger budget for the sequels.

My biggest criticism was that it was a bit to somber and serious. It's hard to imagine that immortals would find every moment of being immortal as being a terrible thing.

A little humor can do wonders for an action franchise.

Other than that, highly recommend.

I didn't know what to expect going in, but opening in a desert scene with a bunch of commandos with guns made it really hard for me to switch to sci-fi mode once I realized what kind of movie it was. that might say more about me and my expectations than the actual film, tho.

other than that, I thought the dialogue wasn't particularly well written, the action scenes were OK but nothing special, and the girl who played Nile just... wasn't very good, to the point that it became distracting.

in regards to your point about the humor, while I agree that a little wouldn't hurt, I do actually buy that these characters would more likely be feeling the weight of their immortality as a curse, (particularly Charlize's character), so the mostly dour tone worked for me.

I really liked the opening scene and I enjoyed the switch to sci fi mode since I was just expecting a commandos kill black and brown terrorist/bad guys type of movie. I also liked how Andy still had and still used her battle axe and the other two had and still used their swords from the crusades. That was a nice tough, it also explained why they carried those weapons with them and Booker had no weapon like that.

I agree with most of this, especially the part about the girl who played Niles.

I also bought the idea that these characters felt the weight of their immortality as a curse, especially Andy and Booker. The other two seemed to view it more as a blessing since it brought them together.

All in all I enjoyed the movie and look forward to the sequel.

Some of us can't handle all the negativity we've seen over the past few months. Seeing plague after plague, war after war, death after death for thousands of years...

I AM interested in Quinn's storyline though (or however they spelled it). Her circumstances make her storyline more compelling.

Overall, I enjoyed it.

she seemed a lil green for the role. plus...and maybe im being a bit hypersensitive...but i hate those roles where the black person is hardheaded, closedminded, selfcentered, generally stupid, and just needlessly a pain in the ass who questions/resists every damn thing. its mad annoying. especially given the gravity of their circumstances at the time.

other than that...it was solid. especially for a netflix title.

im in for the sequel. obviously theres a new wrinkle for andy and its gonna be interesting to see how they deal with it for an entire movie.

sidenote...the thought of going through what that chick at the bottom of the ocean was going through is anxiety inducing. i imagine thats one of a rare variety of fates that would legit terrify an immortal.

was the flashbacks were way too short. hopefully the sequel digs a bit deeper into their backstories a little more.

I'm sure it's a budget constraint but would've been cool to see more
