"HBO Max (05/27/2020, Warner Media)"

I haven't downloaded the APP but if asked right now I know this:
They have a new show called Space Force with Steve Carrell.

They have Big Bang Theory and Friends.

Literally that's all I know.

I have HBO - I'm not sure if I get this for free. (I also have AT&T phone, same question.)

Let's use this post to document our journey.

Search Party was one of the few shows on cable i watched. years after the last season finale without a cancellation, i kept wondering where the next season was and finally checked on it a few days ago. it's been moved from TBS to this, scheduled for release this summer. The Detour on the same network was another show i liked that was officially canceled but was right away hoped to continue on here. i haven't seen any confirmation that it was picked up. TBS' sister station, TNT, had another show i liked, The Alienist. again, i kept wondering where the next season was because despite appearing to be a limited series it was renewed for a second season long ago and at one of the award shows at the top of the year dakota fanning was introduced as from the upcoming season named something or other. i'm expecting this to get moved to hbo max to build up its content to compete with netflix, prime, hulu, and apple.

same with "fx on hulu." i'd love to watch Devs, etc. i can't *justify* another streaming service even if i can afford it, simply because there isn't enough time to watch what i want to watch now to get sucked into original programming on another streamer. it irritates me that fx would produce quality programming and make it exclusive to a streaming service. i don't understand why if they can't/won't air it then at least make it part of their video on demand and fx app for people who are paying to subscribe to their channel.

every media company getting into the streaming game signals the end for scripted basic cable shows more so than network tv, which was already a wasteland but won't run out of junk that people who watch network tv will pass the time with.

Obviously their own catalog is there.

If you have HBO Now, you just need to update the app to Max and your good.

I'm hype for Fresh Prince, and the fact that everything is available for download.

They have a lot of franchises on deck to start, Lord of The Rings, Harry Potter, Predator, Godzilla (looks like ALL of Godzilla, Die Hard, the DC films, etc, and you get Adult Swim/Cartoon Network content.

It's a pretty solid launch slate, though Rick & Morty, Boondocks, South Park (coming in June) have been on Hulu, but making them available for download is a big bonus.

They certainly appear to have most of the first set of Toho. I was hoping for stuff like Shin Godzilla, but there are probably all sorts of complicated rights issue for all the different films.

Adult Swim selection looks kind of limited (I think there's like 8 titles), but hopefully that will grow.

more classic and foreign films than I imagined. they have a good mix of Chaplin, Bergman, Godard, Ozu, etc.

also it's not yet on Roku but I expect that to change within June.

I hadn't heard that it was go to be available. Already watched "Duck Amok."

Their "season" set-up for them is weird, but from what I understand, it goes by year. Obviously they don't have all the 1,000 or so shorts up there yet, but I can still see it being a little cumbersome sifting through what they got to find something specific. I really would like to watch "Great Piggy Bank Robbery" later on.

Happy for all the "franchise" packages, even if they're streching things a bit with Police Academy and Critters.

I also saw that they have the LOTR movies, but I noticed that like the middle Hobbit movie is missing. I mean, I have no intention of watching the Hobbit trilogy again, but it seemed weird. They do have that animated Hobbit movie from the 1970s. Listened to that on record all the damn time in my younger years.

But yeah, I need a bit of time to really explore what's available.

That's it.

If you had HBO Now (that's the one you pay for online - like you don't have cable) or HBO Go (that's the one you get if you have HBO with cable/satellite - you use the username/credentials your cable/satellite company) on Thursday you had X amount of things to watch.

HBO Max is those same X amount of things PLUS more things.

Now, if you had HBO as an Amazon Prime Video channel it doesn't transfer.

If you have HBO on Apple TV as a channel - it does not transfer.

If you had HBO NOW on Roku as a channel - it does not transfer.

the library is great, but they completely fucked up by launching without a Roku deal. why advertise when so many people cannot access it? hell, it even alienates the HBO Now subscribers who are on Roku and wondering why they don't get the Max upgrade.

I have to move my PS4 between my bedroom and my living room and it blows my mind how the LG Store can have every streaming app EXCEPT anything HBO related.

HBO Max itself is pretty decent and pretty buggy. I rewatched Thrones and couldn't watch the first episode of season 6, small annoyances.

between no Roku and no good superhero stuff after July, this is useless to my kids. And it's a shame too because it's got a fantastic library. My daughter and I have watched the Tim Burton's first Batman three times in the last three weeks and she's going to be upset when they get rid of it.

Apparently there's a bunch of JL and Batman content coming in July, but the majority of the DC media, animated and live action, are on the other service. I almost see them folding them into one thing, or bringing the DCU stuff to HBO Max and discounting the DCU membership, but it's a mess either way.

I'd love to have the DCAU in one place, but that's the biggest (and probably only at this point) reason I'd want a DCU subscription. I have copies of B:TAS, JL and JLU on my server in various formats and quality so I could scratch the itch that way, but still...

In every version ever - he's just a lame character.

New season is less wacky - well at least until the last half of tonight's episode.

They need to have more wacky and less "my life is awful" - but season 1 was excellent.

you cannot EVEN BINGE WATCH, since it drops out of full screen even with autoplay on

I love the content more than any other streaming service, but it's wrapped up in shit

I watch on my PS4. I don't know if that has anything to do with it but I've experienced none of those issues.

I do wish it’d auto play the next episode of a TV show sometimes, but other than that, it’s great— and the content is unreal.

It’s miles ahead of Peacock, which I think honestly might be second in terms of content quality, but which suuuuuuucks as a streaming service. I’ve never had an episode play all the way through without stopping several times, and I haven’t had that problem with any other service.

And I use all the streaming services. Netflix? No problem. Hulu? No problem. HBO Max? No problem. Amazon Prime? No problem. Tubi? No problem.

But I swear I've tried six different times to watch an episode of AP Bio just to get several glitchy pauses. I don't mind commercials as long as your shit works-- Tubi is flawless.

In response to Reply # 27

I have only had the play bar issue you mentioned once. It happened on the final episode of "The Night Of" which pissed me off.

My biggest issue is the fact that if I'm watching an episode of a show and realize I want to switch to a different episode, I can't go directly to either prev/next episode (without jumping to the end of the episode) or a complete list of the episodes/season from the player page. WHAT?!

Before an update you could at least click the show title above the episode description and go to the show page (although there no hover state to indicate it was a link) but after they pushed some update a couple of months ago.

How they don't have that is insane to me. It means a user has to search for their show go to the show page via search and then go to the corresponding season/episode.

If I'm missing something, cool. But the fact that I've had this for months and haven't stumbled across how to do this yet is STILL UX Fail.

Also, no 10s skip forward, no ability to see where in the episode you are when scrolling through progress bar manually.

The HBOMax UI has a very fresh out of UX bootcamp feel to the button styles/gradients as well.

That said, it's the ONLY service I actually use consistently because the content is *chef's kiss* I REALLY want to drop Netflix but other people watch that even though I haven't watched that shit in I don't know how long and am usually disappointed whenever I do.

an underfunded development team. because these are basic options that people are used to (10 second skip my GOD). and aside from my first world complaining about a streaming service, it is bad for their product because they make it actively hard to consume more content (the episode selection you mentioned is crazy bad).

sometimes in Chrome, when I click the HBO Max icon I get transported back to freaking HBO Now. no lie.

>That said, it's the ONLY service I actually use consistently

yeah. even though our main living room is a Roku set, I've persevered just because HBO Max has most of what I want to see. although they really should have just done a one-year deal with Roku at launch to build a better subscriber base and then blame Roku if they cannot renegotiate.

I feel like putting Soul, a tentpole release any other year, on their service with no premium charge is a clear sign but it's possible they're trying out different strategies and waiting to analyze the data

It makes sense, because even if the vaccine gets distributed by summer, there's guarantee that people are going to be flooding movie theaters anytime in the next year. Might as well put it on the streaming service. And now they have a solid selling point for the service and gives it some "identity," for those out there that were complaining.

But yeah, I'll be watching a lot of this shit from the comfort of my couch.

The new content for each platform is gonna be pretty slow over the next year or two as production is JUST slowly starting back up. That’s 9 months where basically nothing was produced. Anything that was produced before the pandemic will kinda have to be rolled out digitally in 2021 even if they can’t make money off of it because current subscribers to Netflix/HBO/Disney will be starving for new content.

it's already in the budget

and it was already going to be a loss. for the next multiple years

idk if they'll be able to make all the directors/actors whole on what they were expecting to get, but it seems like they're trying to push that way

if they can turn this into gains for the streaming department, then it at least balances it out a bit.

that WW has been the top movie in theaters despite the streaming release is interesting.

I had to take a break in the middle of episode 2 and when I went back to it it was dubbed in English. I can’t figure out how to change it back to Italian, can anyone help me? I googled but it was not helpful.

Underneath the series description to the right of the play button (above the season toggle).

Took me a minute to figure it out. Fucking yikes. Does any other streaming platform do it like that?

It takes me directly to all the episodes, this is driving me nuts.

same thing makaveli mentioned in his reply. every time i continue an episode it defaults from italian back to english dub

back arrow on the firestick takes me back to the series page to change it. it's any easy fix but just ... annoying
