"What you watching??? (quarantine edition)"

Since a good number of us have plenty of time on their hands what have you been watching? So far i have gotten through a bunch and my thoughts so far:

-The first two seasons of community are very good
-Seasons 2-3 of the Office are very good
-Dave Chapelle Mark Twain was worth checking out
-Coffee & Kamau was enjoyable for me
-Death of Stalin was amusing enough

Anyone discovered any gems during their time social distancing?

That show is easy to watch and after I get what I want to get done for the day, get a tad bit crossfaded and just let that play.

Also, Devs on Hulu has been fantastic. Can't wait to see how that wraps up next week. Alex Garland is killing smart sci-fi.

Gonna get hella slumped tomorrow and watch Cats with my brother.

Gonna try and catch up on Train to Busan as well (I know I'm late).

Tiger King was fucking nuts. Truly awful people in that doc.

Westworld Season 3. It has it's moments, but I'm giving it the whole season to see where I land on it.

High Mantience gets better with each passing season. 4 just ended last Friday. And it's the best yet.

my kids hipped us to Bojack years ago and I LOVED it.
but then stoopid ol 'grown up life' took over (work, bills, gutter cleaning etc...ya know, gown up stuff) and because of that, Bojack kinda slipped outta my regular rotation...

now that I'm home all the time that's a good one to pick back up again, so thanks for the reminder!

... in Amherst so both stories they're covering hit very close to home for me on a few levels.

What's strange is that I vaguely recall the Boston story from when it happened but had forgotten about it entirely. Guess Coakley did her job lol but we'll see, I'm only 2 episodes in. Don't recall hearing about the Amherst story at all.

i finally got around to the last season of This Is Life With Lisa Ling (cnn docuseries; anyone remember her from channel one news?)... usual goodness

i also even more belatedly watched the cbs summer 2016 satire/political drama/sci-fi/horror/romcom BrainDead, which was even better than i expected and still sadly relevant

perhaps even more finally finally i finished watching shout's The Best Of The Electric Company boxed set. very creative program for its time and still amusing now even outside of its intended audience.

i watched Chewing Gum. that was funny.

i've not been in the mood much this week to watch tv, but i'm trying to take advantage of this free month of showtime i have. i started by finally watching Listen To Me Marlon, which was great. i've also been watching Desus & Mero starting at the beginning (6 episodes in so far). i don't really know them, yet i feel proud for them. it's great seeing the bigger budget and the ever more illustrious guests. i really loved the viceland version of the show. i'm a year behind, but they don't seem to be going at trumpito the same way; i wonder why? other than this, my focus is on finally watching Sleeper Cell. i'm 3 episodes in. i've wanted to see this since it aired. so far it hasn't quite lived up to my expectations; it's a subtle show, but i think it may have been underwritten, or maybe i'm unfairly judging by 2020 standards. it's great seeing michael ealy in an early starring role regardless.

much better with repeated viewings. surprisingly, I'm more and more focused on the visuals now -- the intricacy and composition are both mesmerizing.

there are still some problems that don't work all the way for me, but I fully accept the main points better than the first time I saw it.

This should be remembered as one of the cinema's last great arguments for itself.

I have a coworker who just saw Inception for the first time, and he has a 100" projector so his set-up's no slouch, but the four of us standing around him were almost in unison going, "FUCK man you should've seen that on a truly massive screen with theater grade sound!"

We're like 2/3 thru season 1. Getting good and I can't wait to hit s3 and s4. This'll be my third time through front to back but I've seen stray episodes a million times in the intervening years. I still forget a lot of details though, although I can almost quote the entire first season haha.

pretty fascinating look at the visual artist and photographer behind a lot of iconic Hip Hop imagery. I liked it a lot. however, the heavy use of NY-based music for the soundtrack was glaring and confusing, considering the subject matter.

No matter how much I like a movie is a TV show, I've never had any interest in seeing it again.

That said, I started watching community again on Netflix, and wow. It's really fun. Almost thru season one and it's been long enough that dinosaur skill the jokes are fresh now.

Might do more of this.

43. "biggest one was a rewatch of The Wire"
In response to Reply # 0

My first full rewatch of the show. It was even better than I remembered. Binging it made for a different experience too. I really enjoyed Season 2 and Season 5 was a lot better than I remembered and provided good closure for the characters. GOAT show and David Simon is the best showrunner out there. Nobody can juggle an ensemble cast and multiple storylines like he can. I have the season ranking 4>1>3>2>5 but surprisingly my girlfriend, who watched it for the first time, had it 1>5>4>3>2. I learned there are no weak seasons though, only weaker ones.

Also watched:

Devs: 7/10. Pretty good but I had the same issues as others. Could've been a movie and the main character was too stiff, no fault of the actor. Loved the subject matter though. I'm now a fan of Garland.

La Casa de Papel (Money Heist): pretty garbage and they should've stopped after the first two seasons. the show has lost it's charm but it's still good mindless entertainment.

Always Sunny seasons 1-4: People say these were the best seasons but I'm not seeing it. I guess I'm more of a fan of the middle and later seasons when the characters got more ridiculous.

Better Call Saul: Excellent. Not as big a fan as others as I do find it to be meandering a lot, the type of show you can have on in the background 80% of the time (if you don't want to rave about the cinematography and editing) and still follow along with. This season was damn good though and I really like the direction the characters have gone. A bit overhyped though imo. People were calling Breaking Bad the greatest show ever and now those same people are saying BCS is better.

Curb Your Enthusiasm: This past season was a return to form. Larry's still got it.

Terrace House: wholesome Japanese reality TV. A guilty pleasure of mine. Too bad it won't be able to finish due to Corona.

Euphoria: A lot better than I thought. Storylines are a bit cliche but the directing and acting make it interesting.

Currently Watching:

Westworld: Horrible. It's a hatewatch for me at this point. Sad to see it got renewed for season 4.

High Maintenance: Only saw the first episode of the new season but I like this show. It's wholesome and easy watching.

What We Do In The Shadows: not sold on this show still, but I'm giving the second season a shot. Would have been so much better with Jemaine Clement starring.

On the list to watch:

The Plot Against America
Dispatches from Elsewhere
My Brilliant Friend
maybe a Sopranos rewatch

Movies I saw recently that I liked:

Pain and Glory by Almodovar
Portrait of a Lady on Fire
The Platform
The Invisible Man

I'm in the camp that thinks their earlier seasons are stronger. It's not until season 10 that I start thinking that, though. The gang never fails to make me laugh.

>Curb Your Enthusiasm: This past season was a return to form.

I'd never watched CYE until this year. I could never get into Seinfeld, so assumed CYE wasn't for me. I was wrong. Larry definitely still has it. He lost me a little bit with Leon and the Blacks but whatever.

I. Am. A. Dedicated. Fan. Of. This. Show! It's the one show I tell everybody they need to watch. Watching the show feels like good vibes and sunshine, even when there's drama.

Did you see Ryo's aerobics challenge on Instagram? I want the couch cast to respond to it!

Behold:

I also want Yamachan to provide English subtitles on his Youtube page so that I can follow his commentary about the show.

Watch it with my girlfriend and we pause to break everything down like the couch cast. Then I call my cousin and we do the same. They've really perfected the "strangers in a house" reality TV show. Nobody blatantly acting out, no stupid challenges, just six different personalities interacting together with a bunch of people criticizing their every move.

I didn't see Ryo being an instagram hoe haha. He was definitely on there to promote his personal brand, but hey, everybody else is too. They're just not as blatant about it.

Can't believe Yamachan doesn't have subtitles on his YouTube channel. Really missed the older male couch cast member for Part 3. I read he's in a scandal for not paying taxes, which is considered incredibly selfish and sacrilegious in Japan.

What did you think of Part 3 if you watched it? Here were some of my thoughts:

- Interesting how they've added a lot more international or "haffu" housemates this season. I get that they're now an international show but part of the charm for me was always watching genuine Japanese people interact to better understand their culture. That being said, Giuseppe was a nice story, though he sadly had no game and bad taste in women. Vivi I'm not too big a fan of. She got played by Ryo. End of story, time to pack your bags because you're not doing anything else now.

- Poor Tupas. Dude was a 90 year old trapped in a twenty year old's body but still a nice guy still trying to get over his childhood traumas and just looking for love. Foolishly put all his effort into Emika, the phoniest girl on the show desperately trying to repair her image from the Twitter attacks. She agreed to be his girlfriend just to change her reputation and was even flirting with the new guy in front of Tupas on her way out. Guarantee you she broke up with him in the taxi ride out of there.

- Hana wants any kind of romantic connection but I don't think Kai is going to be the one to give it to her. I'll be happy with no more comedy sets from Kai though. Those are painful to watch. I mean, I'm all for dark humor but it has to be funny. Dude just doesn't have it at all. I would tell him don't quit your day job, but he doesn't have one so...hopefully he has a wake-up moment before he leaves.

- New guy is creepy. The panelist You pegged him perfectly when she said he's a guy who never had luck with the ladies until the past few years when he had professional success and now he's trying to make up for lost time. He's got a weird way of going about it though, not that Yume seems to mind.

- Yume is gorgeous btw. Might be the most attractive cast member I've seen on TH. Hope she doesn't fall for the creepy boss man but between him, a lost guy throwing bad jokes to the wind, and a tall boy who might not have hit puberty yet, she doesn't have many options.

- Although TH has taken steps in becoming less homophobic and xenophobic with their casting decisions, it's still kinda annoying to see them avoid the topic and coverage of sex at all costs. Like Ryo and Emika go out on a filmed date, and she comes back without earrings while the panelists speculate that they went to a love hotel. That's a juicy bit of gossip that should have been confirmed but they don't do it to protect the housemates or keep sex a taboo topic. Give us the tea as they say.

- There are only 4 episodes left after Part 3 before it got shut down to Corona. I guess that'll be how this season ends, sadly. I can't watch it because I need Spanish subtitles but I know the episodes are already out there on the internet.

>They've really perfected the "strangers in a house" reality TV show. >Nobody blatantly acting out, no stupid challenges, just six different >personalities interacting together with a bunch of people criticizing >their every move.

That's why I didn't like Cheri with her toxic and sour energy!

Tokui's demise is so sad!

At this point, I don't remember why I started watching the show. I do know that the couchmates were what sold me. I love them individually because I love them together.

I liked that the couchmates sometimes integrated Tokui into couch talk in his absence. I hope he can come back, but it seems like that's not likely. I miss him, even though he's given some of the more...cringeworthy thoughts on the couch.

>What did you think of Part 3 if you watched it? Here were some

I think the housemates should have at least one parent/guardian who is Japanese and they should have spent some amount of time living in Japan. If they haven't lived in Japan, they should be culturally Japanese in some way, and at least have some level of language fluency.

The show is best when highlights all the variety of Japanese culture. I genuinely like encountering a slice of Japan via Terrace House. For instance, I think it's fascinating to discover what people in Japan think is attractive or funny and why. All kinds of stuff. The whole discussion about Ryo and having his hand on Emika's knee was riveting to me, for instance. I didn't notice that! I immediately caught Ryo's hickey, though!!!!! Like Babachan, I thought: "oh maybe he got scratched playing basketball." But then, like Babachan, I KNEW: "no, that's a hickey!"

I don't want to watch a show about foreigners who are fanboys/girls of Japanese culture and Terrace House. Although I know very little about Japanese culture besides what's basic, I at least know that the culture is fetishized.

I didn't like Pepe at first, but then he turned out not to be so bad as an addition. Same with Vivi, for me. I still would've liked to see Japanese housemates in their place. I think the dynamic of White/Euro people changed things.

Vivi got played for real!!! She was trying to get Ryo to see her with the camera rolling and Ryo wasn't for being on the show in any capacity. He'd dial those digits, though. Lol. I think she thought camera footage of them together, even if he was off the show would be enough for her to stay and still have a storyline. I wonder if she leaves before COVID.

Wasn't it hard to watch Hana get caught up in all of that?!

>- Poor Tupas. Dude was a 90 year old trapped in a twenty year old's >body but still a nice guy still trying to get over his childhood traumas >and just looking for love.

That Lily Franky angle was really weird!!! What was going on with that? He gives a pervert vibe.

>Guarantee you she broke up with him in the taxi ride out of there.

10,000%.

>- Hana wants any kind of romantic connection but I don't think Kai is >going to be the one to give it to her.

Kai has a better chance with You (the couchmate).

>I'll be happy with no more comedy sets from Kai though.

He's not funny. Does he not sense how bad he is?

Yuki/Tap needs to come through with some career counseling for Kai.

>- New guy is creepy.

Waiting outside of the playroom while Yume was with Shion!
The Jo Malone lip gloss kiss!
Force feeding Yume!

He's creepier than Hayato running game on barely legal Riko.

>- Yume is gorgeous btw. Might be the most attractive cast
>member I've seen on TH. Hope she doesn't fall for the creepy
>boss man but between him, a lost guy throwing bad jokes to the

She better hope Kai leaves.

Yume is beautiful. I thought Hansan and Samurai a Love to Die for were gorgeous, too. I thought Arman's girlfriend was pretty, too.

I'm ashamed to admit it because of his f-boy tendencies, but Ryo is hot to me. The voice. The body. It all works.

>- Although TH has taken steps in becoming less homophobic and >xenophobic with their casting decisions, it's still kinda annoying to >see them avoid the topic and coverage of sex at all costs.

I wish we could see a couple that's not straight!

>Give us the tea as they say.

I agree. Although, I'd only want to see the TH car that Ryo was driving on their date parked in front of the love motel with, say, Emika's earrings in the back seat.

All of the hush hush about sex makes me wonder who was sleeping with who during earlier seasons...and I also wonder how many cultural cues I've missed that would answer the question. I was low key shocked that Riko and Hayato were sleeping together.

>- There are only 4 episodes left after Part 3 before it got
>shut down to Corona. I guess that'll be how this season ends,
>sadly. I can't watch it because I need Spanish subtitles but I
>know the episodes are already out there on the internet.

I hate that the season is ending abruptly.

The first part of this season was annoying because I didn't like Kenny, Shohei, or Ruka. They were the most useless group of Terrace House men I've ever witnessed. Torichan's bizarre attraction to Ruka was weird.

I'd like to see the producers create a season for older housemates. 30--40/50 years old. I wonder if that age bracket can maintain the same wholesome vibe?

My favorite season is Boys and Girls in the City, then Opening New Doors, Tokyo, Hawaii. I haven't watched Boys and Girls Next Door.

Speaking of TH coverage of sex: what in the world was happening with Shohei doing soft porn!? On Terrace House?!

Random: I can't believe Sienna and Noah are STILL together. They live together and everything. I think they're engaged. Sienna isn't dumb...Noah stands to inherit a large fortune.

Don't think I can watch the rest of the season now, might have to even tap out on the show unless they make some huge changes. The whole appeal of the show was its representation of Japanese culture and wholesomeness but in the latest season they've gone away from that in favor of more international cast and drama. Well, this is what can come from that, especially when they have a panel of comedians criticizing the housemates every move and shaming them for their actions.

Real problem is internet trolls. People need to realize their anonymous hate on the internet still has consequences. Total lack of empathy. I think it's even worse in Japan because the Japanese are much more respectful and reserved in public that some people use social media as an outlet to go crazy and spew hate.

Not sure how Terrace House can come back from this. They'll at least need to have psych evaluations to screen candidates and then counseling while they're in the house and after they leave. Plus tone down the criticism from the panel and the focus on creating drama. Japan is so far behind with mental health awareness that I'm thinking they won't be able to address this appropriately and should consider just canceling the whole show.

I'm in favor of canceling the show. I doubt I will watch old or new episodes. Knowing that all of the show's emotional sunshine is leading to a season like this infuses the entire series with a tint of tragedy. Hana would loom over everything.

Most of the couch members have made public comments about Hana's passing, now. I actually feel badly for couch members who may carry guilt about their words.

I wonder if the couch even wants to continue with the show? Even if the entire cast is replaced--it only puts Hana front and center as the subtext for it. I wonder if people still want to audition for the show, especially since it's become even more of a vehicle to promote careers and brands over the last few years? How would the Japanese public react if the show picked back up again?

Aloha State Cheri said that the show doesn't protect cast members, which makes me think that little mental health support (or any support) will be provided because it never has been.

I think all of the cast and couch, past and present, need counseling. Some of the cast is so young, sheltered, and inexperienced. Navigating this issue in the public eye is a lot, and can trigger all kinds of things. Plus, some of the cast, like Kai, deal with mental health issues.

And you're right. People on social media have to that public anonymity doesn't take away the power that words have. The treatment cast mates can face online is abusive. I wonder if, in Japan, there is some kind of legal recourse that Hana's family might take that would force TH or shows like it to do more screening, testing, onsite pre/post counseling, and all around more comprehensive support?

I can't read Japanese and know very little about how the Japanese public responds to the show. The fact that Yui, Emika, Hana, and other cast are skewered and bullied has been something I've heard about, but I didn't realize the context about how vicious it was. The show, unfortunately, contributed to an atmosphere that went beyond good fun.

This went too far.

I read lawmakers in Japan might use this to pass a cyberbullying law, which seems very needed there. I know Japan has a huge tabloid culture and public figures get attacked and berated for the slightest missteps. I'd blame it on that and social media more than the couch members, though they should now recognize the need for more sympathy and understanding when talking about people. Anybody living on a show like that is prone to have an outburst, especially somebody in their early twenties. Just a sad and troubling way to end a show that used to be so wholesome.

I sometimes focus more on the couch because they're the only frame of direct referenceI I have about a so-called "Japanese public" response to the show. 300%, social media's role should be front and center.

>Anybody living on a show like that is prone to have an outburst, especially >somebody in their early twenties.

Right?

The first time I got a real sense about how bad social media could be for castmates was when Yui was in tears about having to switch careers and drop her dream of working in the wedding industry. It was like she was branded with a permanent scarlet letter.

...and smashed through all of Eagleheart (mostly because it's going off of Hulu).

Dave: Talk about it in the series post. Better than I expected, but man is the Dave character unlikable. When the series bothers to make the supporting cast actual characters and focus on them, it's much more interesting.

Ramy: Really, really good. It's easy to say that it's one of the best shows about faith out there, but it's much more than that. Follows the Louie/Atlanta template, but still manages to tell unique stories.

Eagleheart: Ye gods, this show was fucking weird. Which was the point, I guess. I mean, it was a mostly ignored Adult Swim show, and is essentially a much bloodier version of "Get a Life." Sometimes worked, sometimes was way too "WTF?" for me.

I'm looking forward to season 2. I agree. It's a great show about faith...and so much more.

The storytelling and the Sufi dhikr that takes place during the last two episodes made the season special.

I want to see what else this kid can do.

even though I didn't "binge" it, this was the first time I felt the late-season lag everyone always seems to bring up regarding the Marvel shows. definitely coulda been trimmed by 2 or 3 (or 4) eps.

It's a wholesome Netflix teenage rom-com (?) series about figuring out who you are and what your values are, plus it has heart. The main character is a 15 year old Indian girl who is trying to cope with grief and being 15 and Indian and all kinds of things.

I like watching father daughter relationships on screen, so it was touching to see an Indian father love, adore, and cheerlead for his daughter. The complicated relationship between the mother and daughter was a nice development, too.

The show tried to put forward a multicultural cast, although I thought some of the effort fell flat. It was a really nice effort, though, and I just let it go and enjoyed the series. It low-key irked me that a majority of the teenage main cast fell for white folks. The series is a Mindy Kaling production...so I feel like there will always be something in her stuff that comes with a dose of self-criticism about why an Indian character is too ugly or different or not palatable enough for a hot White guy to love.

I also liked Paxton's sister, who is adopted and special needs and very cool.

Speaking of, I got into Stumptown on ABC because of the young actor with special needs who plays the role of Dex's brother. I don't care what anybody says, Stumptown is good!

>idk if I'll get to that one.

Ha.

I'm surprised that I like three of of the wholesome teen offerings on Netflix, but it's because the storytelling choices can be different and very low key subversive. Even though adults might watch, I also feel like the wholesome shows are for real teens vs. a sexualized/fetishized fantasy projection of the teenage years.

Those children on Riverdale were too much and too grown.

>I was reallllly not into Mindy's last one, Late Night.

The previews for Late Night turned me all the way off. I skipped Late Night and watched her Hulu show...Four Weddings and a Funeral. It was better than the Mindy Project. I'll give her that.

Sounds like something MK would indulge.

- Into the Night (Netflix) was pretty interesting
- Becoming (Netflix) was good. Didn’t learn anything new, but we still enjoyed it.
- The Americans (Amazon). Late fucking pass. This was such a good show
- Zero-Zero-Zero (Amazon). Great show. Thanks OKP

I wanna watch Snowfall, but I don’t want to subscribe to another streaming service. Hoping it’ll pop up in Netflix or Amazon soon.

AND, I’ve found it very hard to find teen shows that aren’t so damn sexual. I want to watch shows with my tween and teen that won’t make me and their father squirm. We are by no means ‘prudish’. It seems to jump from animated flicks to Young Adult. With no middle.

Also a cute show. It's based in Canada, too. It's about a group of Muslim families who live in a small town and attend the same mosque. I never finished watching the series, but what I saw was alright.

I associate LMontP with Kim's Convenience.

For some reason, I just can't get into Kim's Convenience.

i did this, too, at the beginning of the year because i'd read that disney was taking all of fx off of competing streaming services in march so that people had to get hulu. i'm glad you got the opportunity because i totally agree with you. i'm not a binge watch person, but i was determined not to miss out on this, and the show naturally lent itself to bingeing.

of Philip, Elizabeth, and Paige is decided during the final episode of "The Americans," I cried for real and it caught me by surprise. For years, my aunt kept telling me watch the show. I finally did last year. She be knowin'.

>AND, I’ve found it very hard to find teen shows that aren’t so damn sexual. I >want to watch shows with my tween and teen that won’t make me and their father >squirm. We are by no means ‘prudish’. It seems to jump from animated

I get it. It's disturbing!

Have y'all watched "To all the Boys I've Loved Before?" The lack of scenes where there are teens engaging in explicit sexual behavior is refreshing. The main character is half Korean, half White. Important cast members are teenagers, too.

--The Half of It. It just came out on Netflix. It's about a lonely Chinese American teenage girl who lives in a small town. By the end of the movie, she makes a friend and also develops feelings for a girl. It has depth and messaging about being vulnerable and your true self. Nothing explicit.

The Asian teen story is kind of having a showing on Netflix, right now.

Shows not featuring teens, but still possible viewing for a family with tweens and teens:

--Jane the Virgin. It's underrated magic!! It's a creative, funny spin on the telenovela with a big heart that focuses on values and the meaning of family. The characters are lovable and it's easy to feel connected to their lives.

--No Good Nick. Warning...it can be corny and feels like a mediocre Disney or Nickelodeon show. The acting is bad. Half the time the writing is, too. But. It's this weird show that encourages young people to exercise their ethical and moral imaginations. The premise is interesting: a teenage girl runs a con on an unsuspecting family who takes her in, so that she can seek revenge against them. She runs a con in every episode, and of course has to struggle with wanting revenge and her growing affection for the family. Maybe not for the teen crowd because of the corny factor...but tweens? I can see it.

--New Girl.

--Crazy-Ex Girlfriend. This makes the list as one of my favorite sitcoms. It's probably too much for a tween, but not a teen. Overall, there's nothing explicit, but the show loves to give a lot of explicit verbal and visual winks and a nods.

--Nickelodeon's Avatar: Last Airbender series. It's a cartoon and a classic for all ages!! GOAT.

Annoyed with myself that I didn't do it when this whole pandemic started, so I could just watch Season 4 as it happened. Now, of course, it's too late. And even though IFC constantly runs "That '70s Show" marathons, they aren't playing any of the Season 4 episodes after they first broadcast.

Oh, and I finally started Ozark. Two episodes in.

Yeah, he's more funny when he's hammered, but they got some decent mileage out of his efforts to stay sober. And his tortoise. And the stuff with JK Simmons was really good. I didn't appreciate the Oakland A's slander tho...

Only three episodes into Ozark so far, but I'm digging where it's going so far. I've meaning to watch it forever. And my homie has been bugging me for years to start. No excuses now.

Devs: binged it pretty quickly. Cool enough, but didn’t love the lead actress. And my god I have a growing irrational hatred for Alison Pill, she ruined Picard for me, just something about her. And she seems to pop up in projects I like.

Billions: Always knew it’s probably a show I’d like, but never made the plunge. Have now made it thru season 3. Great show.

Uncut Gems: right on the edge between cool/meh

Avatar (last airbender cartoon): put on Netflix yesterday and I’ve watched 7 episodes already. Just one of the greatest cartoons of all time.

Sunderland till I die: really good sports doc, 2 seasons. Don’t have to be a soccer fan to appreciate it. Netflix

About halfway through. The lead and Officer Morpheus are pretty good, but kind of annoying to be this many episodes in and dude won’t even explain to his wife what’s going on. Also would have been good to have a flashback episode to show that dude was considered solid enough in the community for everyone to care about the standoff at all.

Watched The Most Dangerous Game on Quibi too. Couple of tropes like The Lead Who Doesn’t Finish Off Bad Guys He Fights or Pick Up Weapons and (has) Black Best Friend, with a side order of Omnipotent Bad Guy With Unlimited Resources but otherwise okay.

Does Black Best Friend get wounded and left behind so White Hero can continue his journey? I’ll let you watch and find out LOL

Two thirds in and it’s still hella unclear what happened in the backstory. I think even the writers don’t know at this point. Gave up on it. I could give a spoiler filled review if anyone cares

Alien Director's cut
Aliens Special Edition
Alien 3 Assembly Cut

3 gets hated on but its not bad and has some good acting. Im not sure on this cut, the ending doesn't have the alien bursting out her chest, just her falling in, threw me off there and kind of liked that scene better.

Up next Resurrection followed by Prometheus and Covenant.

I first saw Aliens on TV as an adolescent, so it sort of blew my mind later how a lot of key scenes were only added for the broadcast version, which turned into the Special Edition. can't imagine the movie without them.

Prometheus has annoying flaws (yes, the crew is *that* stupid and there's no explanation) but gotdamn, it's a fucking MOVIE. the visuals, the artistry, Fassbender the God...the narrative is held together with duct tape, but it hardly matters to me.

Covenant is less ambitious but tighter-wound. Fassbender is even better and I loved what Katherine Waterston did. say what you will about Ridley Scott, but he knows how to create an epic set piece (there are several here).

wasn't aware I grabbed a fan edit and its not official but man, I liked this quite a bit better. Clears up some stuff adding in a few deleted scenes including her fight with the engineer at the end, removes the scene completely of the engineer and the first chest bursting that seemed to try to tie in to Alien but then was written out anyways in Covenant as well as they are on a completely different planet to begin with so didn't really make much sense other than we have to tie it in better. I would love to see Ridley Scott do his own director's cut but think he said he was happy with the theatrical version.

to 'refresh' the series and make each movie a different take on the human experience with the Alien.

I haven't seen it in a while but I remember liking it more than most folks, mostly because Sigourney and Charles Dutton were so good.

****** SPOILER ALERT ******

I like that Fincher didn't stay beholden to the audience goodwill built up in Aliens by making Ripley a triumphant hero in Alien 3.

The movie is nothing but filled with bold choices.

If you can get past the shock and horror (from a viewer's perspective, if you really liked Aliens) of losing Newt and Hicks in the first scene, you'll probably be on board enough to like the movie.

tbh i had subzero interest in a Phyllis Schlafly (fuck her and her ilk forever) bioseries at first, but seeing Boden/Fleck involved and Cate Blanchett always bringing the goods make me give it a shot. And actually it's so much more engaging than I expected. The show spends time with a lot of different people (Gloria Steinem, Shirley Chisholm...), so it's not just about Schlafly. And it manages to show a range on the topics without bothsidesing equal rights. It gets quite bittersweet if not depressing when you start noticing the parallels of the anti-ERA movement with the bad-faith industrial complex that have buttressed the conservative world for the past 30-40 years. But things don't get preachy or overly grim, just clear-eyed.

First of all, Jessie Ennis is flat-out hysterical and 4 episodes in is the absolute MVP of a strong cast. Her line-readings and reactions KILL me.

The show is largely funny and certainly better than I'd expected. However, the Nazi episode was so thoroughly wrongheaded in its resolution and central message that I'm stunned thinking about it. Nazis don't need to be deplatformed but rather isolated and separated so no one has to deal with them and they'll just turn on each other? Oh word? That's PRECISELY how white supremacist movements have grown. Like are you fucking kidding me? 8chan, Discord, Telegram have allowed them to build their movement and incite people to kill people (the New Zealand Mosque Massacre is encapsulates this perfectly).

To couple that with the bit about the ethics committee was just the kind of lazy assessment of white supremacy and the ethics surrounding these issues that I'd expect from a die-hard Joe Rogan fan.

So that episode is a big stain on this show and followed by the episode on gender representation in tech that didn't really have anything much nuanced to say besides the gag about the company being a champion of women only to have none in the background of the shot was a rough 1, 2 punch.

But overall it is very funny and the cast is solid with McElhenney and Poppy being the weakest links. The show owes a LOT to Community in terms of characterization there's essentially a Winger, a Britta, a Pierce and a sociopathic Abed played by Pudi

Me & the little lady are going back through "Community," "30 Rock," & and "Parks & Rec." I watched all of these while they were on TV and I had forgotten how funny they all were. Some characters that I previously liked are getting on my nerves now. And some that I didn't give enough credit earlier are funny as hell now.

I finally watched "The Rise of Skywalker." There were some spots that got my inner 10 year old hyped up. And there were some spots where the jaded 45 year old rolled his eyes. But it wasn't the worst way to end things. It was pretty much what I expected.

I just finished the 1st season of "The Boys." Insane. Absolutely nuts. I'm going to back and read the books now too.

starts off strong but ultimately a letdown after the first season. The scope felt too narrow and not that interesting? Great acting though

Streaming on Prime now.
Had some preconceptions due to early reviews and the status of Gibson & Vaughn in Hwood, but had good experiences with Bone Tomahawk and Brawl in Cell Block 99, so gave it a shot. The awkward moments are there, but did not overwhelm the film like I thought they would.

The dialogue is trying way too hard and becomes less painful the more you watch. Mel & Vince deliver, especially the former. Same for Tony Kittles.

Would recommend.

50s set Sci-fi story is cool and mysterious but nothing incredible on its own. But the craft put into almost every aspect of this thing is incredible. So well shot and really good acting from two leads I've never seen in anything else before. The very limited special effects (mostly at the end) are wonderful. I'd imagine almost everyone involved in the making of this thing will soon be on to bigger (if not better) things.

Kind of reminds me of how I felt after the first season of Stranger Things, where it wasn't the general idea that was cool, but just the details in the execution that made it so fun.

Another micro budget sci-fi movie about something mysterious in the sky, but this one takes a more tech-heavy approach. Definitely has some corny elements, but if you like to see people tell little stories about big events, it's enjoyable. It's sort of like a very low-budget cousin to Contact.

Genndy Tartakovsky's Primal i found just scrolling through the adult swim library. i hadn't heard a thing about it. best chance discovery for me in a while. i'm psyched for the 2nd half of the season when it does begin airing. astonishing piece of work so far.

rick & morty is up to the usual standard this season from what i've watched so far. it's hard to imagine this show ever being badly done.

american dad! i cannot say is quite up to its usual standard but remains watchable. i've yet to tire of it, even if it has become more of "the roger show" than its initial premise.

syfy were good enough to option the dc universe Harley Quinn show. it's aired season 1 this month. i was skeptical due to harley fatique, but i ended up a fan. if you like DCAU, you should enjoy the animation. if you like dc in general, it's fun to see the comedic (piss)take on the various heroes & villains. the voice cast is great, and they really nail the tone of the show. i'd recommend giving it a chance, at least a couple episodes if you get the opportunity. i'd gladly continue watching if syfy airs the current and upcoming seasons.

adult swim is also airing Paranoia Agent, so i'm seeing what that's about. nice mystery vibe.

speaking of strange, i found Christine (2016) oddly affecting. rebecca hall killed it.

i also really enjoyed The Sunset Limited. if you've never seen it or simply need a reminder of samuel l. jackson's acting abilities and range, do yourself a favor.

Downsizing was sadly a bit of a shit film, but i cannot get over how great and funny Hong Chau was in the last hour. i need to see more of her work. i'm glad she got golden globe nominated for this part.

TCM aired No Blade Of Grass last month as part of its earth day coverage. i don't know how far in advance they planned it, but watching it earlier this month it was rather eerie: a virus originates in secretive china and becomes a global pandemic, wiping out agriculture, prompting harsh political and military responses, and creating anarchy and chaos. i like disaster movies, and this is not one of the best, but it was an experience watching it in 2020.

pbs has had some very good covid-19 documentaries on frontline and nova. i also watch every episode of 60 minutes, and that has been dominated by covid-19 for months now, covering many angles of the crisis.

i've been enjoying verizon's #payitforwardlive series. i watched both episodes with dave matthews and billie eilish, alicia keys, and usher.

i also finished watching Fawlty Towers and watched all of I, Claudius.

Watched the first season of Ozark. Definitely shows a lot of promise. I'll def. keep going with it. Not slamming three all seasons back to back to back, because that seems like a little much.

So, in the meantime, I watched Narcos: Mexico Season 1. Just finished Sunday night. Actually, in that case, I'm going to go straight into Season 2. First season was definitely up there with Narcos Season 3 in terms of quality.

Also, since I got HBOMax for free, I decided to explore stuff on there. I'll confess that I'd never watched an entire season of Eastbound & Down front to back, so I slammed through the first two season over the weekend. I hear it slacks a bit after that, but each season is pretty short so I'll keep going as well.

Also need to find time for the second season of Ramy.

about as disturbing as expected. the dude pretty much ran a pedo pyramid scheme. Just like Weinstein and Cosby, he had his signature assault techniques.

Dude was basically R Kelly on steroids. More victims, more money, more power, but just fascinating how connected this guy was. 100% he was taken out, but by who, who knows really.

Series doesn't focus much on that part though. it's more about him and his victims and what a piece of shit he is.

it's weird how nothing has happened to her. I wonder if she has enough dirt on the right people that she's protected.

they didn't get into that, but more how she was pretty much his accomplice/recruiter and the extrovert of the two, and while he had his signature "give me a massage" move, it seemed her thing was to tell these girls what an amazing opportunity this was for them.

The Lovebirds:
I don't watch a lot of comedy films but I enjoyed this one.

Taxi Driver:
Had never seen this before and had recently become more interested after it was mentioned a lot in reviews of Joker. I wasn't interested in seeing Joker before seeing this and I'm still not now. I liked Taxi Driver though.

Watchmen: Ultimate Cut:
Trash. I remember not liking the theatrical version but when I saw it on opening night and I think my opinion is worse now. Other than the addition of the Black Freighter scenes and a few small things I don't remember the theatrical version enough to know what was changed so I don't think this version is necessarily worse but I definitely had a more intense, immediate negative reaction watching this last night than I did after seeing the original.
I really only watched this with my wife and mother because we're going to watch the series next.

Did the writers go there for any particular reason except to show that Ramy will do ANYTHING no matter who else it hurts? And if that was the reason was there NO other scenario for us to get that?

Kudos to Mahershala for making the season bearable. IDK if I'll watch a season 3, I cannot stand shows with little to no redeemable characters

Miami in all it's 480p glory still might be my favorite. the competition was broadcast less clique-y and fake dramatic -- Howie and Hung were considered the villains of the season, and yet the grievances brought against them were completely minor compared to the real assholes before and after.

oh, and I forgot how corny a lot of the challenges were even then. they actually had to come up with a Bertolli frozen dinner and Cold Stone Creamery mix-in. Padma telling the contestants to grab their "Glad Forceflex bags to clean up" after an outdoor challenge was perfect.

Las Vegas has a great peak, but the finale actually sucked (nobody did a great meal) and the rest of the cast outside the Voltaggio brothers, Kevin and Jennifer were all pretty annoying/weak compared to most seasons. it was super top-heavy. plus Mike Isabella's unbridled misogyny is hard to watch (especially after his real-life sexual harassment cases torpedoed his post-TC empire).

Texas is fun because I like most of the cast and live in Texas (greatest opening two episodes ever), but again -- seeing Paul Qui celebrated is tough, since he's a real piece of shit who beat his girlfriend featured on the show. also, the constant bullying of Beverly is annoying. what's funny is she won a James Beard award and opened her own Michelin-starred restaurant in Chicago, so she's done well since then.

I finally saw the Charleston season and thought it was pretty good. I like the idea of 1/2 returnees and 1/2 new. the other All-Star seasons I don't fuck with much, because it feels even more fabricated and phony than usual.

California was nondescript. S1 and S2 are best forgotten (there is some bad shit in S2 that would've gotten roasted in social media and cancelled a few careeers, if that was a thing back then). NYC (S5) sucked, which is crazy since it's NYC. New Orleans was OK up until the finale, which was the worst decision the judges ever made and invalidated the season. I liked Louisville a lot.

also, I miss the weekly posts on OKP back when episodic commentary and message board popularity was a thing.

and the nicknames had me going:

FauxHawk
Hat Douche
CCM (Canned Crab Man)
Eurotrash
Crazy Eyez
Angelo Robbins
Big Pun
Beadie
Dale? No, the other Dale -- Big Gay Dale
Oldboy

best part is how we just stopped using their real names mid-season. you had to know the lore to keep up by the end -- we didn't use Casey's name for two straight seasons; it was just "Aniston fucked up Crazy Eye Carla's sous vide". also we were a lot hornier back then.

just finished Seattle. holy shit I forgot the "Josie laugh" and that whole mess with Kristin getting kicked off early. how did Josh make the final four? he cooked bacon and breakfast the entire show. plus his fucked up combination of redneck/hipster was annoying. although after watching Charleston, Brooke is in my top five favorite contestants. she's a beast (plus I respect how she just went back to doing her thing and didn't get caught in the whole TC-winning flame-out).

Boston was cool as well. top five were all great and one of the best finales between Gregory (every quickfire I will make a coconut curry and every talking head I will remind you I run and used to do coke) and Mei ("Chef Voltaggio, I won!"..."Cool.").

it really is, almost comically so. i love browsing user lists on imdb because it will say right there that it's on prime and be a click away. i've fallen down many a rabbit hole that way. for certain people, prime is way better than netflix.

Netflix is TV - like how most of a channel is crap, then a few nights a week there are some good shows, and a few nights a week they show movies.

Prime is a nerdy friend who loves movies and hasn't seen the newest movies because they have a long list of old movies to get through.

Both have HORRIBLE interfaces for finding content.

i try to check out the prime homepage/screen on my browser or device a few times a month, especially after the 1st, particularly the recently added section. i don't seek out their press releases, but i have noticed that they hardly ever mention the little gems that i come across on my own, usually through that super nerdy methodology i mentioned of browsing IMDb. eventually i just might make one watchlist on there and apply the prime filter, which i do weekly for some specialty lists i keep. prime really shouldn't need another site to sort what's on there, but there's so much (and yet nothing to some people).

Watchmen (2019) - wild palms ish. at first i did not recognize Hong Chau. *thumbs up*

i finished watching Better Things season 4. it maybe didn't hit me as hard as season 3, but it's never not good. i'm glad it got renewed because the last episode felt like a series finale.

akin to syfy and harley, AMC provided to its cable viewers its own first season of the Shudder webseries adaptation of Creepshow from late last year. this was ok. i wouldn't subscribe for it, but for a few easy to watch episodes when not much scripted content was airing and a bit of a horror tv drought (correct me if i'm wrong), i was grateful for it.

the Worricker trilogy of tv movies was fun, light entertainment with some pretty great casting. if you need a contrast to the many dark and tormented detective/operative stories, seek these out.

i also watched a few episodes of Nature, which is sweet but dramatic in its own way.

less sweet (but same network), i also finally watched ken burns' Vietnam War miniseries. not surprisingly, this was exhausting but in a good way. even if you're not a war buff, this provides a lot of mental exercise following it and unpacking all the decisions and screwups. again, i could see some parallels to right now.

i more recently watched Pope Francis: A Man Of His Word. i'm not a catholic but went to catholic school, and almost everything he said resonated with me. one unexpected takeaway was why smiling matters.

The Decline Of Western Civilization Part III, more about the gutterpunk "lifestyle" than punk rock music, was sad and poignant. i came to parts I & II as a music fan and hadn't watched the conclusion to the trilogy right away, but it's a powerful coda that nicely bookends the same director's Suburbia as well.

i watched Laurel Canyon from EPIX, and it was epic in scope but in feel/delivery more like having hors d'oeuvres. if you enjoy the music of the era and want some anecdotes and background, watch it, it's fun, and i would recommend also watching some of the more substantive documentaries out there on specific performers.

i kept the documentary watching going with Blackfish (about as sad but informative as i expected after all of these years putting it off) and Senna (just awesome and way more engaging than i expected, being unfamiliar with him and the sport overall). i also filled in the gaps of one of my favorite shows of recent years, The Lost Tapes on the smithsonian channel. it's similar in style to ken burns except without new interviews or narration and with more of a focus on specific/smaller but still important, although sometimes forgotten, events. if you love docs, find a way to watch this. there are only 10 episodes, they flow impeccably, and they are all standalone. like in Senna, they really give the feeling of being there rather than someone's spin. it turns out they are all nonetheless written and directed by one prolific guy, which has me wanting to check out more of his craft in the near future.

one of the highlights of The Lost Tapes was the episode about rodney king. (i realize this is well covered.) in the flurry of studios and networks making socially relevant content available for free viewing for a limited time, PBS brought out from its Great Performances archive Anna Deavere Smith's masterful one-woman play Twilight: Los Angeles, which deftly blends documentary footage and her seeming ability to impersonate anyone. see this if you haven't. it was previously aired after the freddie gray tragedy.

PBS also recently made available its Great Performances episode of the 2010 filmed adaptation of Macbeth with sir pat stew. there's some very fine acting in this dark tale, but some of the directing and production design reminded me of marilyn manson music videos. do see this if you want something less traditional in setting and style but with the bard's words intact.

i also got to satisfy my interest in offbeat movies, i.e., cult classics. the 1991 horror-comedy Highway To Hell is now on prime, and it overdelivers IMO, ripe for (re)discovery. pure joy watching it. less below the radar but still neglected is the sci-fi gem The Quiet Earth. watching this wasn't as eerie as was No Blade Of Grass right in the early stages of the pandemic, but this is a much better, smarter, more entertaining film, deserving to be well remembered by those who've seen it. (neil degrasse tyson did the audio commentary in full fanboy mode.) i have a real soft spot for dystopian movies, especially from the '80s, but this made me want to watch more sophisticated sci-fi (i'd already added a couple of the suggestions upthread to my watchlist).

i watched a couple of marx brothers classics, Monkey Business and Horse Feathers. so funny, so clever.

that's another one where i listened to the audio commentary, and they talked about getting the rights to and sifting through all that stuff, which had either never been seen or hadn't since first broadcast. the mounted car video is incredible, and it's so fun seeing and hearing just what it was like back then, too. i'm glad they made racing safer since then.

good show. I actually watched Manhunter, Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal and Red Dragon (did not watch Hannibal Rising) prior to starting and not sure I should have as there are a lot of similar scenes and sequences I probably would have remembered either way but maybe not as vividly. Loved the show overall tho, Mads killed it.

Us: I'm not into horror, but for a moment, this had me on the edge of my seat and I could understand why people would be into this style of film. ...then it squandered its potential with a series of bad/strange decisions. disappointing.

Mandy: wow... can't say I've seen much quite like this. Nic Cage surprisingly wasn't going as batshit as I was led to believe he would. the showstopper award, IMO, goes to Linus Roache, who plays the cult leader. haven't seen him since my Law & Order binge-watching days—good to see him still doing his thing!

Fast Color - overall 3/5. Felt like they could have done more with the daughter and the end kinda led to a sequel but kinda didn't lol. Loved seeing very regular Black women with super powers though. And some of the cinematography....I need a movie poster

Little Woods - a little depressing. Liked seeing Tessa Thompson in this type of role though. 3.5/5

Broad City - Too white. It was decent background TV until the intern/slave episode. Just no.

The Spanish Prisoner - one of those movies that had been on the periphery for me over the years, mostly in the context of being some drama steve martin did among all of his comedies. i'm not really mad at myself for not having paid this much attention earlier because i saw it at the right time. based on the title, i always assumed it was a period drama. it's actually another smart and fun thriller from david mamet starring campbell scott with steve martin well cast as a rich prick, felicity huffman still watchable in an early small part, and supporting actors that also include the late ricky jay (no, in a mamet film, you don't say).

At Eternity's Gate - van gogh is one of my favorite painters, i've now seen multiple biopics about him, and julian schnabel's was like a painting come to life, breathed into life by the great willem dafoe.

Justice League: War - i had taken an unplanned break from the DCAU, and i remember this entry in particular was not well received here. i can't remember why. my man jay oliva delivered again. i loved the action, the animation was solid, and it was fun seeing the younger versions of the characters meeting and only just getting to know each other. i enjoyed it immensely, and this did make me want to jump back into watching these.

Sherlock Gnomes - if you like sherlock holmes, whether you liked or have seen gnomeo and juliet or not, see this. it's a very fun take on the characters of him and watson, and the animation was more dynamic and experimental in parts than i remember in the previous film (which i also really enjoyed).

Amy - from the director of senna, another chronological documentary entirely constructed with existing, sometimes private, footage in lieu of talking heads. i meant to watch this years earlier. i thought i knew the story and there wouldn't be much in it for me but a sad trip down memory lane. it is that, but it was more as well. her dad wasn't the great guy he seemed. everyone failed this woman. it made me mad. there were some good musical insights in this. just reflecting on it now weeks later, i don't even want to dwell on it much more because it's all such a shame.

Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics And Men - this was another mostly chronological docuseries that aired on showtime last year. it was produced by the clan, and it shows, but it still had plenty of authentic moments even if lacking in major revelations to long-time fans. i realized that the things i thought were missing probably didn't belong in a 4-hour story airing on showtime, even though Amy sort of accomplished that in half the run time as a theatrical release.

The Beat Don't Stop - this doc on go-go aired on tv one a few weeks back, and it was like watching a double episode of unsung except the producers took a cue from the silly controversy last year over the metro pcs store to overly politicize the music. yes, go-go and antigentrification go hand in hand, and partying can be a form of protest, but the doc felt a bit exploitative of that moment. where it shines is telling the history and even showing the present day offshoots and revivalists.

Death Row Chronicles - this stayed on my radar a year and a half after airing, so i gave in and watched it. i dug it, mostly the story of when they were at their peak. maybe i'm gullible, but i did find the other stuff toward the end credible.

Straight Outta Compton - i got around to this, too, thanks to it being free to rent right now. i'm not sure what i expected, but i liked it. it, too, has the hallmarks of being a self-portrait. it's competently filmed, and i enjoyed the throwback gaudiness. aside from giamatti, who really disappeared into that role and wrung out about as much sympathy as could be reasonably expected, the acting really was after school special, at least at times, but by the end i was pulled in above all by the pathos of eazy-e's arc, to my surprise.

Sweet Charity and Blue Is The Warmest Color - i ended up seeing these on consecutive nights, and they dovetailed with each other in an odd and pleasing way i don't want to spoil for those who don't know the endings.

Dark Angel - circumstances led me to start watching this series for the first time. i keep wondering why i've never seen original cindy memes. there's a lot i could say about the perspective of seeing this 19 and 20 years after it was broadcast, coinciding with when the story was set, but it's probably all self-evident to those of you familiar with the show. i'm about 7 episodes into the 2nd and final season, which was a very noticeable drop in quality from the first.

Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. - no topic this year (no vahe). i have 4 episodes left. i'll be sad to see it end, but it's time. it seems like they will be ending on a high note.

30 Rock: "A One-Time Special" - what a disappointment. really, what was this? an ad?

quick little series I just binged (only 8 episodes at 30 minutes each). wasn't familiar with Abby McEnany at all, but thought this was excellent.

even though the premise could be summarized as "45-year-old fat queer dyke (McEnany's self-description) finds herself while dating 20-something trans man", the show never gets preachy and is very relatable. because relationship and personal problems are real to everyone.

I suppose your enjoyment depends on how funny you think McEnany is (and Theo Germaine, who is fantastic as well). but you can tell the show has a lot of real blood, sweat and tears behind it -- like most things worth watching.
