I am a sucker for end of year/decade lists and as I was looking for a list of best comedies of the 2010s and all the lists that I found were pretty blah. For example, Spy and Game Night were on several list I saw and I just don't remember them being great movies. And Paddington Bear 2 was on a bunch of list, and though I haven't seen it, I have a hard time thinking that it made a decades best list.
Compare that to the 2000s when you had Apatow, Jay Roach, and Adam McKay cranking out tons of movies that still slap like Knocked Up, 40 year old virgin, Superbad Anchorman, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Step Brothers, The Other Guys, Talladega Nights, Meet the Parents, the Hangover....
Okay as I type this out I am seeing that there is a pattern of a certain narrow type of humor that dominated the 2000s but I think the case still stands that the 2000s cranked out a lot more enduring funny movies than the 2010s.
Now that being said, I will say that the 2010s became an interesting time because ALL movies became funnier. The Marvel Action Movies are way funnier than older Action Movies. Even Dramas like the Social Network was pretty F'ing Funny. Yeah Todd Phillips and Adam McKay stopped making pure comedies but the dramas, histories and oscar-nominated movies they made were funnier than what previously fit those bills.
So I am I being old and grumpy complaining about how things were better back in the day or am I on to something?
