"Queen & Slim (Melina Matsoukas, 2019)"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6Th84oGDno

This movie made me mad. The one lesson I took away is how us black folk fail each other everyday.

I'm going to see this again to support and some of the journey that these two take is powerful, but yeah. Be prepared.

Are you talking about the production? Or just the plot of the movie?

Could someone link me to something actually entertaining that those Desus and Mero guys have done? Everything I see from them is cringeworthy as that quote. They also seem to grin way too much, like to the point of self parody.

Can't tell if you think it's good or bad.

I like Daniel Kaluuya as much as everyone else. He's proven strong enough to drive a movie. But I was very underwhelmed by the trailer.

Still curious though.

And this film's marketing has been incredibly strategic.
They seem to be trying to stay away from professional reviews and instead prop up easier please movie goers.
Yet and still

I attended a screening with a post-film Q&A. I appreciated their ideas, inspirations, and processes for this movie, but the story was pretty weak. Weak enough that I checked out pretty early.

It looks great though.

I'd like a movie where Black love isn't interrupted by white people's base nature, but this ain't that. When they mentioned Love Jones in the film, I thought, "oh yeah, a Black love story without a white person bringing rape or murder into it. (Beale St)" It's like the message of "hey white people, quit being assholes" is being told to the wrong audience and while I agree with the sentiment, the beauty of Black people doesn't need antagonistic white involvement - I already exist in America.
Escapism is great when you actually get to escape.

Other than that, the leads killed it and I'm glad it exists. You saw the trailer, so when ol boy shows up, more than a few people said "I can't wait til they kill this motherfucker," myself included. And applause when it happened.

I thought the dialogue was boring, sometimes being outright bad.

Some of the decisions the characters made left me scratching my head.

The son served no real purpose.

All of the social stuff that serves as the under current in the movie is there, but it didn’t really do anything with it besides have it in there. It was kinda too on the nose for me.

It’s something there, but it never really got where it should of went. The main characters had flashes of chemistry but the dialogue held it back. The story had flashes but some plot elements held it back.

I wasn’t mad I went, but I felt it could of been better if some stuff was fleshed out.

The poster is fucking iconic though.

Pretty to look at, couple good performances, but damn the story is trash and fantastical. Like for no reason at all. IF I have to suspend my intelligence 30 times in your movie at least make a fantasy feel good ending.

Another note, Lena Waithe is a superhustler for transitioning one good episode of tv to all this access.

Her work is super meh tho.

I'm so confused when she gets mentioned in the camp with other dope creators. Like I'm missing something.

end, the story and the relationship between the two main characters is solid. Although I am personally not a huge Daniel Kaluuya fan, he did a good job and Jodie Turner-Smith was amazing.

Cinematography was amazing and it was very well directed. Daniel was good as per usual.

Other than that? Nah man.

Queen can’t act, multiple things didn’t make sense (you’re a lawyer, point out dash cam footage would exonerate you, the black kid killing the nice black cop was stupid, stopping to ride a horse when you’re on the run? Come on man), and yeah overall wack.

...the cops suspecting they are in the house/area...and setting up a perimeter that literally ends next door from where they pull off from.

...or dude counting the reward money (in bands of cash no less) *immediately* after they get intercepted/shot. no processing/wait time.

a lot of this shit was amateur hour.

not to mention being on the run for killing a cop and just taking random romantic detours.
