‘Breaking Bad’ Movie: Watch the First Teaser for ‘El Camino

In case you hadn’t heard, Emmy-winning drama “Breaking Bad” is cooking up a movie sequel.

On Saturday, after details of Netflix’s project quietly leaked online, the streaming giant issued the first teaser for “El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie,” which will be released on October 11.

Starring Aaron Paul as Jesse Pinkman, the “Breaking Bad” film follows Jesse after his dramatic escape from captivity at a Nazi compound.

Vince Gilligan, the creator of “Breaking Bad,” wrote and directed “El Camino.”

No other cast members have been announced.

“El Camino” is produced by Mark Johnson, Melissa Bernstein, Charles Newirth, Diane Mercer and Aaron Paul, in association with Sony Pictures Television.

CNet says Odenkirk was the first one to actually confirm it:

https://www.cnet.com/news/netflix-breaking-bad-sequel-el-camino-trailer.

Earlier Saturday, a placeholder image had been revealed, letting the sequel title out of the bag presumably a bit too early. Reddit user saddadstheband apparently posted a screenshot revealing it'll portray Aaron Paul's Pinkman, one of the AMC show's heroes, fleeing from "his captors, the law and his past" in the wake of the series finale, with series creator Vince Gilligan writing and directing.

The page was taken down, but the leak added fuel to a February report saying the Breaking Bad movie will air on both Netflix and AMC. The show, which ran from 2008 to 2013, focused Bryan Cranston's Walter White, a chemistry teacher turned meth cook, and Paul was his former student turned partner.

The apparent accidental reveal came shortly after Bob Odenkirk, who played crooked lawyer Saul Goodman in Breaking Bad and prequel series Better Call Saul, told Hollywood Reporter that the movie had already been shot.

"I find it hard to believe you don't know it was shot," he said. "They did it. You know what I mean? How is that a secret? But it is. They've done an amazing job of keeping it a secret."

you could just given like one glimpse of Jesse doing literally anything and some credits and i would been way more hyped. nevertheless, i trust in gilligan and co about as much as any team in television, so I'm excited despite the lacklustre tease

>RE: skinny pete is not super memorable or interesting

It's very on brand for the BB team to drop "easter eggs" for long time fans to pick up on, throughout BB and subsequently Better Call Saul. I know Skinny Pete doesn't exactly qualify as an "easter egg" but it's in the same ballpark.

And if you've never seen BB then you wouldn't/shouldn't care about this movie ... yet. And therefore the trailer for a movie like this isn't really designed for you, whether you recognize a character in the trailer or not.

If you have seen BB then you are more than likely an avid fan and therefore would know who Skinny Pete is right away. If you don't remember Skinny Pete then you should prolly revisit the series before watching the movie haha.

(At the risk of stating the obvious, all the "you"s above are general not specific to you).

I appreciate that they didn't go overboard with the teaser. It's called a "teaser" for a reason. Supposed to be sort of ambiguous IMO.

Yeah I get all that and know you weren't referring directly to me. That said, I still think a teaser was not great. I knew it was skinny pete, I just found it underwhelming given the stakes of bringing fans back to breaking bad. And again, like I said, I'm still all in. It just was uninspiring

And wanted to return the favor.
Will be shown on AMC after Netflix gets the premiere.

Who knows if anything deeper than that.

I probably shouldn’t have reservations about returning to the world of BB
since Better Call Saul is so damn good.t
But I dunnnnno.... Better Call Saul is a series; they are able to slow play everything.
Invest time in characters, allow stories to develop.

This is going to be 90 - 120 mins.
Aaron Paul said he read the script and was floored.
But honestly, Paul would probably follow Vince up in the sky in a jumper plane with no chute and when Vince said jump, Paul would jump.

And I like Aaron Paul! lol. Looking forward to his role in WW season. 3.

Then it felt like, in my cultural memory, a lot of people just forgot about the show between seasons and the only people talking about season 2 were the people that would never shut up about season 1. It's harder and harder to remember that Mad Men was brand new at the same time, while HBO was floundering but audiences weren't used to looking other places for a "prestige" series yet.

AMC really showed out for those shows by looking ahead and realizing that in-the-moment viewer numbers weren't going to be the big picture in the future and both shows saw substantial rises in viewership as word of mouth kept spreading, both of which had a lot to do with Netflix. I know family that still think Breaking Bad was the first Netflix original series! Breaking Bad's ratings chart (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Breaking_Bad_episodes) is especially fun to look back in with hindsight.

And it being on Netflix between s2 and 3 helped it gather steam
and by time season 3 rolled around people were hype for it.
Add to that the show was hitting its stride and was fuxking fantastic, it took off.

Better Call Saul made me trust these dudes more than ever. I was so afraid of BCS, thinking it was corny they were even gonna do it.

They proved me VERY wrong so I'm here for this movie. I'm sure it'll be great.

Specifically this one ... that the most recent trailer gave him "hope". That's a little over the top IMO lol. Like, prior to this one trailer you had no hope for this movie ?!? Just cause the first two trailers were underwhelming ??

That's insane. Gilligan's got 11+ years of amazing BB-universe material on his resume and 2 "uninspiring" trailers made people lose hope for this movie entirely ?!

Crazy.

have you seen their track record with even stellar directors who have a consistently superb history of making actual movies likes chandor, saulnier, etc?

dude has done great work on 2 top notch shows but ima remain a lil cautious about a netflix movie from the guy whose last movie he wrote was hancock lol.

Netflix has produced very little good original content (at least in relation to how much they have). I've always trusted Vince, but sometimes it's hard for creators to refuse the temptation of money and putting out a bad product. The original teaser was outright bad. I'm always nervous when Netflix revives something because it's usually not good.

This is the best series of all time, Better Call Saul has only added to its legacy, and Jesse is one of the GOAT characters ever. I didn’t realize it until it was getting made, but this was so necessary.

They could make a sequel of Jesse having beef with a moose or something, and I’m in.

Only problem was flashback Todd was fat as fuck, flashback Walt looked like an egghead, and flashback Jane looked like an Aunt. But I guess there’s not much they can do about all that.

Spoilers

Not blown away but I legit enjoyed the fuck out of it

I thought everything with Todd was truly great. Same goes for everything with Ed (so eerie we lost Forrester today).

Loved all the shit with the fake cops/welder

The Walt scene felt too much like fan service. It felt like a deleted scene, and ultimately kinda flat. Jane scene seemed unneeded but no biggie. I can never get enough of mike

Nice touch not putting the skinny pete teaser scene in the actual movie

Anyone recognize the big goon who brought the strippers from Better Call Saul?

I cant argue whether or not this was needed but I'm happy it exists. I love this universe. I'll probably watch again over the weekend

Not sure it was needed though.
I kind of feel like the perfect ending for Jesse
was either getting away in the el Camino and not knowing if he ever truly got away
and thinking / hoping he did or seeing the Jesse 6 months after fleeing New Mexico and seeing him live a new life in Alaska.

What’s that story? Maybe I would’ve enjoyed that more?
I dunno. I love the world of breaking bad but this felt like
3 episodes in 2 hours.

One episode ditching the car: Jesse with major Skinny Pete & Badger screen time with ya boy from the demolition lot.
One episode stretched to an hour being a Jesse and Todd episode.
One episode being not getting any of the money from the fridge then having Sergio Leone-esque VS story against the welder to get all of the money.

I enjoyed being back but I dunno... it was good.
But it wasn’t something that HAD to be told imo.

It was almost like Aaron Paul kept texting Vince like, ya knoooooow...
I’m watching Better Call Saul and it’s brilliant and if you ever think of something
for Jesse, I’m here. And Vince was like well, I got Bon & Giancarlo this great show...
lemme do something for Aaron...

Intense, well acted, and with a few genuine surprises. I especially liked that in Breaking Bad, it seemed like Walter had to react to or fix all of Jessie's screw ups, but here when Jessie screwed up or had poor judgment, he had to think on his toes to stay alive and on the go. Less calculating and more like Jason Bateman in Ozark.

Aaron Paul somehow carries the movie well even with a quiet, subdued performance (and he only says BITCH once, and in a flashback). Jessie Plemmons and Robert Forster (RIP) are both great.

Ultimately I feel like it was just a coda to the Breaking Bad story that didn't really expand or enhance the Breaking Bad story the same way that Better Call Saul does. But what a fun coda it was.

i thought there would be another 10 minutes. that made me feel overall kind of empty but i did enjoy watching it.

it was cool to see so many characters have some new scenes.

i wonder how it really would have been reacted to if he had ended it with jesse ending up in jail like vince said he originally was thinking.

I thought it might have been better with him in jail, OR with a sign that he was going to spend the rest of his life on the run.

As it is, it kind of ends in the same place as Breaking Bad, with him seeming to get away from it all.

Maybe they re-shot the ending based on test screenings?

Mike almost literally said that he could have anything except a happy ending. Yet that's what we get.

In response to Reply # 35

I didn’t feel like Jesse got away. I HOPED he did, but given the way things went for him for basically the entire series, and given that he likely had no idea where he was or was going and how many cops were on the way - I wondered if the cops caught up to him like 30 seconds later and he went to jail, or he died in a high speed chase, or something horrible.

And the last few Breaking Bad episodes were like 95% focused on Walt, so it was nice to get closure with Jesse. And the flashbacks with Todd worked to fill that time period in a bit more.

And I agree, it did feel like it ended suddenly. That’s also because I didn’t want it to end though.

I thought the ending was perfect. It was a tonal polar opposite to the finale of the series.

Jesse riding in a shitty car, clean shaven, and happy during the day vs. screaming in a nice car, dirty and terrified at night.

I thought, and still think, Breaking Bad is the greatest show of all time. It's series finale is incredible. I didn't think there were any questions unanswered, and it was up to the viewer to decide what happened to Jesse after.

But.

It was great to see these characters again, and it didn't taint the memory of the finale whatsoever. It was a great, Western-like extension of the show. Some felt like the cameos were forced - but I didn't think so. Each felt pretty calculated and necessary. It added to the show and didn't take away from it (*cough* Arrested Development *cough*).

Again - 100% didn't need it, but I found myself riveted regardless. You forget just how sadistic Todd was, and it was kind of crazy to relive that torture chamber that Jesse was in. It was such an entertaining time, and expertly directed, that I couldn't help but smile throughout.

We didn't need it, but I'm glad we got it.

It doesn't have the same broadly rabid fan base, at least it seems that way, but it's a remarkably good show that's good enough to debate which is better- and BB is on that GOAT short list.

Not to oversell, but BCS is a treat.

I'd say BB has more "holy shit" moments and BCS has more interesting character development. Honestly I don't know which I prefer. Might have to do a BB rewatch after BCS wraps up.

BCS hits the ground running and never stops, whereas S1 of BB was a comparatively much slower, and less interesting build, than what we get from BCS.

After that, I see the two shows doing the same relative crescendo. It just builds, builds, builds, until it peaks, and then it ends.

Part of what makes that so appealing in BCS, I think, is because we're seeing the evolution of these characters Into the ones we knew from BB.

To that end, they built everyone in a way that, while we know exactly who they will be, still provides a sense of urgency.

Spoilers

Watching these final pieces of Jimmy flicker out, while Saul takes over, is gut wrenching. Because I love Jimmy. And I love Kim. And Kim loves Jimmy. And while I know full well what Saul is all about, watching this character shift is such a compelling journey, and Jimmy is a very empathetic character, while Saul is.... less so.

Watching the Gus and Hector feud develop still has an edge to it, despite know how this ends.

Mike Saving Saul in S5 was fucking bananas. And that's a touch of magic, I think, to be able provide those kinds of moments despite the fact that much of the audience already knows, more or less, the end result.

Though I'd still argue that things like the Kettlemans, Jimmy building the Sandpiper case from damn near nothing, and the eventual Jimmy/Chuck showdown are as good as anything we get in BB. Anything.

Jimmy and Chuck's court scene is right there with Walt and Hank coming to a head, IMO.

Kim's explosive response to Howard after the will is on par with anything Skylar did in BB.

To that end, much like BB, this is building to a crescendo that is as engaging as anything on TV.

I find this aspect of the show to be absolutely amazing. They’ve gotten me a few times, where I’m telling myself “you KNOW how this ends, how did they have you on the edge of your seat for that?” These guys are so incredibly good.

I'm dreading S6 for both of them (as well as Nacho's dad), because they're not around for BB.

So I need to see them both get out, and get far away from everyone else.

I have a bad feeling that this won't happen for at least one of them.

Kim has just gotten a taste of the world Jimmy has entered and I think she will get out before it becomes too late. I'm guessing she leaves both Jimmy and Albuquerque. Nacho has been trying to leave this world since we met him and I just don't think it's in the cards. Gus or someone else will have him killed, I just hope Mike isn't the one to pull the trigger.
