not just in what they're showing, but that it might be too cynical for its own good.

Zendaya and the kid who plays the asshole QB are killing it though, and i've been 100% engaged in both episodes.

NYT had an interesting article out this morning or last night about how statistically every kid in this show is an outlier and drug use, sex and basically every behavior except perhaps porn viewership is significantly lower than the generation before it, or in the case of marijuana usage roughly on average. Only vaping has seen a significant shift in trend for the "worse", and even that's at the expense of cigarettes.

That said, the direction has been pretty significant for a TV show (putting the Inception hallway special effect into the pilot was a hell of a flex), it seems like they've picked up a lot from Noah Hawley's and Vince Gilligan's shows in terms of clever visual cues and sound editing.

I loved the first two seasons of Skins but it's highly dated now in terms of both its visual style and depiction of teenage sexuality (if these kids are horny, those kids were psychotically so) whereas this show is taking a heightened but more nuanced look at things. It's got a lot on its plate and I'm really curious how it'll hold up as the shock value fades and the characters reckon with - or don't - their actions.

the opener they did with Kat, and the text montage with Nate and Jules were really well done.

Question though, Nate knows he's texting with Jules, right? I wasn't 100% but his glance over in class seem to indicate he does.

Acting is really good too.

Love the opening backstory and the carnival Some Came Running nod, and just the chaotic vibe this episode.

Nate worrying about Jules ratting him out when its gonna be Maddie who brings him down. I think she might report him next ep for choking her. Maddie's crazy and all but Nate deserves any shitty thing that happens to him behind this.

Jules character is crushing it.

Like they keep piling shock value on top of shock value on top of shock value on top of shock value.

But I'd be lying if I said I wasn't enjoying it. It's fine.

But yeah the musical number felt like the show being up it's own ass and nearly brought down what I thought was an otherwise solid finale.

Penultimate eps are nearly always the season's best, the Cassie stuff and nate.vs Fez was good but I didn't care about Rue's bladder diaries, talking pill bottles, and Jules misadventures felt like an episode of High Maintenance

I don't watch enough shitty soap opera-y TV and this was pretty good for that. The eye makeup was maybe the most over the top thing about the show by the end of it, though I did find it heartening that on its surface the show confirmed a lot of my worst fears about the generation below my younger sister's, so a bunch of journalists got together and put out articles confirming the kids these days are NOT getting as fucked up as this show suggests.

I think the series hit its apex during the carnival episode and immediate fallout from that, but it started backsliding when Nate went from a clever bad dude to a legitimate supervillain. Props to him for whatever he drew from in that last scene with his dad, though, that was horrifying. His whole family might be fucked up on a show that's otherwise pretty grounded but the acting is keeping it together for me.

maybe this is all these kids are into nowadays? my nephew says his (pwi)
highschool is atrocious...mid-upper class broken homes, rampant drug use,
suicides, security threats (inside and out), sh*tty administrators, but that sports
program stays winning.

i think thats just most high school. mine was like that 10 years ago. my mom and pops said theirs was like that 30-40 years ago.

I find myself more interested in some of the 2nd tier characters than Rue, and Jules who are only interesting half the time.

Nate as an interesting as fuck character. The first ep you just assume he's some amped up asshole meathead, which he is but he has so many weird ass layers its fascinating.

I'm not sure what Fez's out is here. With the blood on the money, Mouse now knows he jacked it, and while he might respect that for a minute, its not gonna be exactly hard to put together when he sees what happens to his supplier. I'm not sure what keeping that open ended was supposed to mean

Lexi is the Franklin from Peanuts character of the show. She doesn't do much but she seems like the only kid who doesn't seem like a psychological dumpster fire.

Cause I'm kinda all set with where they took that as well hah. It was compelling early on but got a little ridiculous by the end.

I guess it should be considered the Christmas episode. Anyway, Zendaya continues to put in work. Not a lot of action as you would expect from the series, but her acting was fantastic and further proved she deserved her Emmy win. Colman Domingo’s performance makes me want to see more of him as well. They kept me captivated the entire episode.

The next episode is supposed to air on Jan 24th.

i only saw part 1 of the "christmas" episode. Yea Zendaya was great and all but it was so miserable it made me wonder why i even like this show lol. Trailer was a good reminder

I was trying to figure out the Cal timeline. the music clocks it in the late 80s maybe 91 at the latest, Cal appears 50ish, and Nate couldn't have been born until early 2000s. Then i remembered there's another brother but i got the sense he wasn't that much older than Nate.

I continue to like all the non-Rue stories more than the whole Rue/Jules and that blonde kid stuff.

I think this show's made a smart decision getting away from plot as its overriding focus and spending more time messing around with composition, homage and really strong performances.


I agree that Euphoria can come off desperate for its shot or scene for sure but I think that's part of the charm, it's taking the leap from 2019 to 2022 and the reality these high schoolers are closer to 30 than 20 and having fun with it.

when she walked in the crib with the girls...it felt like a spinoff show episode where characters from the main show make a cameo.

iono if its cuz shes a much more recognizable figure and been in bigger projects than everyone else. but she feels out of place.

she did a hell of a job tonight tho. prolly some of her best acting ever.

This season kinda feels like two shows - the hot mess Instagram hour with the regular cast and then some actually traumatic drug addiction shit whenever Rue's around. And it felt more stark than ever in this episode because it was all centered around Rue, so whenever it was just her and her family it felt like this Oscar-winning drama and whenever the rest of the show would cut in you had to remember this is also Sam Levinson's goofy pop-up art show also.

that quick convo with ali talking about rues stank ass had me dying. you know that was an adlib and he just started riffing. those laughs from everyone else seemed really genuine lol. mom was prolly supposed to stick around in the kitchen longer but he sent her off too lol.

especially in how he immediately sensed Gia's quiet internal suffering to the point where he told mom to focus her love on her, because Rue is gonna be Rue

at the same time, if you talk to Ali's family, they will tell you he's a piece of shit, and not be exactly wrong about that.

she was always generally likable, and in a single scene they made her into a complete dick

what i had heard originally was that she wasn't happy with what they were doing with her character, so they chopped her story down

Like it's obviously possible that she could pivot in that direction, but she found a way to be almost proud of her body type last season so I wouldn't have expected an eating disorder to be her next move.
