that alone is commendable, but so much of his work is high quality to classic as well. i don't always think of him personally in terms of my favorite directors, but then i think of how many of his movies are among my favorites. i'm not sure why that is except maybe he's not all up in the videos, dancing...

LOL
I too don't think much of Lee or his movies for whatever reason. His movies are consistently good to great, which would normally bring a lot of attention to a director and their films. But he doesn't have a myth about his personality or his method. He's really low key in that sense which is refreshing. He's 'about the movies' but not in a curmudgeonly way that comes off as a bit pretentious like Nolan's or Tarantino's gripings at changes in film culture.
He's really in a class of his own with his impulse to seamlessly use innovative filmmaking technology and incorporate it into films with great storytelling. The directors who are in the same balgame - Cameron, Spielburg, Nolan, I guess Lucas when he made films - made larger films mostly but didn't have Lee's knack to get great performances from their actors. Lee uses cutting edge techniques but his stories always are in the forefront and not the dazzle the technology offers.
I think in a better world, movie journalists are talking about Lee and his craft more than about DC movies sucking.

Talking about the look of the film only: A lot of it looks like the most incredible HDTV demo porn I've ever scene. They shot the FUCK out of this film - it has a lot of interesting colors and photography.
I'm grabbing a 60FPS UHD rip to watch it in more of a HFR - but this thing looked INCREBILE on Hulu.
Now the animation on Junior looked very video game-ish.
The film itself is okay - I thought it would be a lot worse.
Clive Owen in this AND in Valerian The City of a Thousand Planets is turning into a great B-movie villan.

First, as a demo piece for a video camera system it looked INCREDIBLE.
But as a movie it looked AWFUL. It's video - everyone looks too "normal" and not like a film at all.
I think you could take screen grabs and get ever actor's fingerprints from the film - it was that detailed and realistic looking.
I don't think this is the future of film making - I think that Ang Lee just thinks it's so neat he's chasing an ideal that is in his head.
Maybe seeing it in 120FPS and 3D (which literally could not be shown in any theater in the U.S (without loaning them the equipment and installing it for them) would make it better? I doubt it.
I think the non-HFR version was better looking- and the film itself is okay.
Looks like its gonna bomb tho. At least he hit with Aladdin I guess but this is more the type of movie I enjoy him in and was hoping would get him back on top.
