"SUCCESSION (Season 1, HBO)"
Wed Jun-20-18 01:24 PM by Creole

Third episode just aired the other night. I watched the 1st episode on the night it aired. The 2nd one was missed on the night it aired but I caught it on Monday when I got back from Mexico.

There's enough good acting, drama, and humor to keep me interested for now.

The Ringer's take: https://www.theringer.com/tv/2018/6/18/17469174/succession-hbo-billions

Anybody else watching? If so, thoughts?

And Roman is a jerk but he cracks me up too.

I'm interested enough to see where it goes. HBO has already green-lighted a second season.

Greg is a monstrosity of a cluster-fuck! Dude can't breathe without doing something stupid. "Did you know he gave me a job?" LOL

Never heard of this and I subscribe to HBO.

Too many outlets to stream and too many exclusives. It's almost a full time job keepin up on what's new, and that's just knowing what's out there, thats not even considering watching all this shit.

Ugh. #firstworldproblems

I watched this coming off Billions and with it in mind, had a hard time seeing where they were going. The Billions characters are awful people that you can't help but find yourself rooting for. The Succession peeps are also terrible people that for the most part you can't really get behind, but the characters and their world are all intriguing in their own way.

except for the tall kid, and possibly Kendall who at first I just took as a Trump Jr type rich douche, but he's becoming interesting, since I think that's the type he believes was meant to be (a young copycat of his dad) but for better or worse, it's clearly not in him.

The family dynamics and quirks of each character are awesome.

and it took me a minute to come around on it but I'm all in now. I was worried it was gonna go the route of Here and Now which was just a dogshit awful show.

dimed out Tom to Jeri (tom n jeri ha!) in the last episode, about wanting to go public.

Greg's not comfortable in his skin or with his family standing but he also knows Tom is a bully weirdo who will gladly throw him under the bus. It's a trip because Tom is so insecure around the core family, so he tries to pick on the other outsiders. He tried to go at that Wila girl as she was walking in the bathroom.

Richie Aprile style fail

Jeri, the Asian dude, and Kendal's college homie felt it out and even though they bitched out, made the smart play.

Roman basically had the gun to Logan's head and Fredo fumbled that bitch

"Roman, you better be smelling your fuckin' armpits"

The Tom and Greg stuff was awesome too.

This joint has gotten better and better since it started.

I'm just waiting on Greg to runtelldat about his witnessing of Kendall's college/boarding school buddy and the other older gentleman meeting in the park.

Greg and Tom together... They are a shitstorm bythemselves.

Roman! Roman! Roman! He basically curled into the fetal position while sitting at that table.

And Logan Roy is THAT DUDE. He had em all shook! LOL

I wonder what Logan believes his wife's game is.

"Performance issues.. what the fuck is this?"

When Frank told him to leave the room, and Logan was like "bitch, make me!" You could feel the confidence drain out of anyone who was down with ousting him.

Ewan voting with Logan was pretty interesting. I don't *quite* understand why, but you could kind of feel it. It wasn't intimidation. He seemed to hate the ugliness of this new generation trying to toss Logan aside like that. He doesn't seem to like Kendal much either. Seemed to be a combo of many things, and that he legit wassn't sure how he'd vote until he did it.

where he was disgusted by the greed. even if Logan fails, why should Ewan care what happens to the company? Part of him wanted to fuck logan tho.

>That was a great ep. the tension the entire time was insane.

Having Logan start out sick and off his game is an interesting approach. You really got the sense in this episode of what a titan he is and why he's so intimidating. For example, HE would have had that chopper in the air no matter what that pilot said.

instead of calling to check if she's coming lol.

he is a beast...his kids are so afraid of him it's crazy. this episode really showed that more than any others. Kendal was so shook when he went to dinner with him and Roman completely froze and couldn't look up during that meeting. it is also interesting (and often true) how real intense guys like this that are all about tough love actually end up raising kids that are the opposite of them as a result of that so called tough love lol

Shiv is a monster!
Logan created chess!
Greg and Tom, together, are comedic gold. Greg got him after Tom admitted to swallowing his own load. Tom can't pull any punches now w/o Greg pulling that card.

Two more episodes to go for this season.

I'm already waiting for next season.

he tries to harness his dad's ruthlessness, and strength but i still don't think he has it in him. He hasn't found his lane. Even him trying to put the word out that the art girls who turned him down are junkie party girls. Maybe I don't know the art world well, but I'm wondering if they would even give a shit. I did think it was rich her calling Kendall a cokehead, then following it by saying she's more straight forward when she's on coke lol.

You're right about Roman though. He was straight Fredo in this episode.

I'm guessing Greg inadvertently drops dime to Logan about that time he saw Stewie and Sandy at the park.

Shiv's the one who is like her dad. Even though she sees though him, she'll probably end up dropping out of the Bernie campaign and working for him.

Lol @ Logan being impressed that Tom can be an abusive dick lol

I think this downturn, for him, has him seeking to prove his strength. His own unique ruthlessness is forming. Their big brother told the story and Logan's intent as it related to them all playing in dog pens and eating the dog food. The strong one stays while the weak one has to go.

That was more for the financial world to hold back. He introduced additional risk that investors have to consider as they fund the venture. I respected that when he did it. I pull for him because of how the board meeting played out. That was cruddy for those people to back out the way they did. Romulus' bitch ass included. LOL

We saw it when he folded in that chair during the board meeting.

>I'm guessing Greg inadvertently drops dime to Logan about that

I'm waiting on that. Too bad Kendall doesn't know about it yet. The one problem Kendall has is that he doesn't see that there are resources he can use and that are more than available to him. Greg would be the perfectly loyal soldier if Kendall just paid attention. And don't forget that Greg has the papers he confiscated when he was supposed to be shredding everything. Kendall could really be the boss if he got his hands on whatever info is there.

>Shiv's the one who is like her dad. Even though she sees

Shiv gonna break poor Tom's heart. Dude admitted to swallowing his own load. I fell out when Shiv tried to kiss him and he slightly turned away to give her his cheek. She is ruthless as her dad told her. She's smart but we can see now just how much her daddy issues push her. She ran to what she'd said was only going to be for fun. She sought solace in the other dude.

See, I was legit rooting for Logan in that meeting. Partly because i think in a way I felt like Ewan and didn't like the young eating the old aspect of it. Another is just how Logan even in a weakened state owned that room like a true OG. I was in awe lol

It was silly for Kendall to think he could count on Stewie or Lawrence. Stewie all but straight told him he was gonna roll with whoever won. Lawrence... ok this was more on Roman for giving Kendal shitty intel. Gerri completely bitched out but she didn't actually have a vote. and Roumulus.. well..

That was funny as fuck. A subtle moment but hilarious.

At times he seems to know what he’s doing but he continues to make really stupid decisions. Why would he trust those guys to help him take over when they weaseled into the company behind his back? How does he not see he’s being played all over again. If he was to sell and say “fuck it” I would understand but going into bed with them now? You can just see the double cross coming a mile away.

When he’s focused he seems like he can do this but other times he just seems scared and confused.

Logan is a fucking monster though. It’s dope how they have slowly revealed just how crazy he is. He’s constantly playing everyone. He knew not going to Shiv’s wedding would hurt her. On the flip side she really was being naive thinking she could play both sides. Did she really think she could work for her dad’s enemy and keep it all business? She can’t be that dumb.

Roman is wild disappointing. I expect him to be a fuck up but he’s so useless.

Greg might end up running this thing when it’s all over lol

He seems almost competent at times, but he's weak and too driven by emotion. Even the thing with the art girls.. it's not like they actually agreed on anything, or owe it to him to go with him, but he acts as they did.

for the other thing, as you said, if he just took the money it would be understandable. Falling for something so obvious from Stewie and Sandy is not. Part of me thinks he's playing them (by using their assumption that he's an idiot) because he ultimately wants his father's approval. Sad thing is even if that's the case, Logan will probably still call him a moron.

>On the flip side she really was being naive thinking
>she could play both sides. Did she really think she could work
>for her dad’s enemy and keep it all business? She can’t be
>that dumb.

it seemed she was pissed at her dad along with convincing herself she believes in Gil... plus add her side piece to this. She's realizing Gil doesn't walk on water either.. her dad is right that her last name is more important to Gil than her skilsset, not to mention he's probably not electable.

but then again her Dad threatening her and ghosting her wedding is forcing her hand as well...this shit is kinda painful to watch.

Yo...every time Kendal says "so...we're good?" i cringe...Logan would never say some passive shit like this. i wish at least one of them would pull a power move of some sort and earn that last name but i guess the way this is playing out is more like real life than what we typically see in the movies. i'm going to need somebody to catch a W before the season ends though otherwise it will be hard to keep watching. i'm hoping Greg ends up on the board or something. Poor Tom is def going to end up on the street with nothing but his load on his breath.

I felt so bad when Logan saw Kendal and dude tried to quickly look away and Logan just smiled...it was like a lion spotting a gazelle. Logan is a beast. He plays those mental games so well...the kids' mother does as well. She was throwing shade all episode. It was masterful.

Kendall is a boy who wants to be a man but really still wants to be approved by his dad like a boy does. Shit's weird now that I watch them more and more.

Shiv is the closest to her father in personality. She'll be fine despite appearing to be self-destructive. Logan was right when he said that she was the smartest.

Greg got Tom by the balls now. Tom knows that Shiv is messing with dude. He gave up that info to buy her loyalty. And Greg holds the keys to it all. Greg is my favorite character behind Kendall's dumb ass and right ahead of Kendall's boy - Stewy.

He really does but he won't do anything to Tom until Tom pushes him over the edge...which he likely will because he'll always be reminded of Shiv cheating when he sees him

This is the second girl to say he doesn't fuck. I assume his dick works since she said he jerked it next to her, so maybe that's the only way he can get off (remember he jizzed on the office window). i don't think he's gay because he seems like he's the type who would just happily be that. He also asked her to marry him right after his mom suggested it.

lol @ Caroline telling Greg his dad used to sleep with every man in town

Kendal has a Ziggy from the Wire thing going on where he's driven by the fear that everyone thinks he's a joke, and it's part of why everyone thinks he's a joke.

Do y'all think Frank really leaked or is Sandy just saying that because Stewie told him (after Kendall told Sandy)?

I wonder if Kendal tucks tail and runs to Daddy next week, or Logan gets the drop first.

I can’t figure it out either but he seemingly has mommy and daddy issues at the same damn time. I’m sure that has something to do with it.

I don’t think Frank leaked anything. I think they were always going to do it that weekend if Logan was going to go. Once they knew he was at the wedding they kicked it into gear. For me it’s further confirmation that Kendal will be fucked out of this deal. Poor kid...he’s such an idiot.

So bare with me, I'm paraphrasing myself!

>that's the only way he can get off (remember he jizzed on the
>office window). i don't think he's gay because he seems like

I binged this whole series two days ago in anticipation of the finale and I have a pretty specific read on Roman. He gives people what they want. Logan wants to dominate someone, Ken wants to feel like a better adjusted person, Shiv wants to feel like she made the right choice to get out, and he plays that role for all of them. I think the dog story was very significant to this; Roman has issues with performance, he's always acting out for approval. The lazy way to write this story is that he's homosexual, the interesting way to write this story is that he can't get hard.

>Kendal has a Ziggy from the Wire thing going on where he's
>driven by the fear that everyone thinks he's a joke, and it's
>part of why everyone thinks he's a joke.

To that effect, I also think Ken is more Nick and Roman is totally Ziggy. Just invert the dick size and give Zig some money.

it's def more than him just being gay. what ever gets him going is very specific, and probably wrapped up in mommy and daddy's approval somehow. When he brought this girl, i figured it was just to troll Tom but it seems that part was a bonus. Maybe he sees her as open to his hang-ups.

>To that effect, I also think Ken is more Nick and Roman is
>totally Ziggy. Just invert the dick size and give Zig some

I think they're both more Zig than Nick. On the surface Kendal is Nick and Roman is Zig. Roman is like Zig in the sense that he's so openly annoying, and seeks approval, but while Nick was generally competent and comfortable in his own skin. Kendall is everything but. He's occasionally able to project that image but most of the time he's so transparent in his insecurity, begging for people to respect him and take him seriously. It seems like everyone is either laughing at him, using him or feels sorry for him (or all three)

Kendall... dude is simultaneously the unluckiest and luckiest man on earth... great acting btw.

Connor might be an even bigger loser than Kendall. Dude felt like he one-uped Bernie in an exchange and he things he's the next president. Wila all but completely stopped pretending to respect or even like him lol

Kendall, as shaky as he was, still had Logan shook and scrambling. Now Logan has him by the balls. Stewy is an idiot for even letting Kendall out of his sight, especially since he was clearly jonesing and prone to self destruction. The family is terrible, but I do love the pace and writing of this freakin show. Gonna be a long wait for Season 2.

Stewy underestimated Kendall's level of being a fuck up. He thought worst case, he'd be hung over and Sandy would be mad lol

Shiv: ...ain’t shit, she is the perfect combo of her mom and dad. Gotdamn they are the worst. I was so mad at her for the way she did Tom. He signed up for it tho.

Tom: Shiv broke this man down and built him up in the span of 2 hours. “Pour that wine back in the bottle” Boss shit. Still not a fan of how he spilled the Cruise to Shiv.

Kendall: ole stuttering ass nigga. Every time he is about to win he finds a way to lose. I still root for him for some reason. Ole bitch ass nigga

Iggy Culkin: that kid got serious issues but he hilariously owns most of them. Why he can’t fuck? Ionno. That rocket explosion had me weak.

Cam: oh, you running for President? Run back to the desert nigga.

Greg: he surprised me. I thought e was a total fuck up but he is smart as shit. Now he has Toms respect, Kendall’s respect and he is one of my favorite characters.

Logan: OG.. I hate this dude but I respect his gangster. He knows he raised some fucked up kids and they aren’t ready to lead. He is still turning the tanker.

The mom: I hope I never see her again. She is a bitch... brutally honest but a truly bitter POS.

Logan’s wife: can’t trust her but I love how she handled Shiv. She knows these kids ain’t shit.

that she needs an open marriage, and made him agree. Imagine a man doing that lol.

I like how instead of threatening to fuck Nate up, he was very clear he'd pay men to do that haha

>Cam: oh, you running for President? Run back to the desert
>nigga.

Wila straight laughed in his face, and told him "well that sounds like a fun project". She can't bring herself to fake it anymore.

>Logan: OG.. I hate this dude but I respect his gangster. He

I can't not like him. He's a ruthless piece of shit. He punked that kid that poured his drink, then when he died, made it clear he's about as important a housefly.

>The mom: I hope I never see her again. She is a bitch...

that shade though. top notch

I was so focused on Sally and stewie fucking Kendal over that the crash thing completely caught me off guard. Even when he started driving I assumed a DUI type scenario at worst. This show is incredible. It just kept getting better each week.

Poor Tom...he’s not about that poly life. He’s going to be miserable. Shiv is a beast. She really did that shit on their wedding day? She’s starting to feel her power more and more...once she goes full Logan everybody’s fucked.

The whole rocket launch thing was crazy. Roman is completely useless but hilarious.

Greg continues to come thru...can’t wait to see how he grows in the show.

Logan is a fucking G. That final scene really showed how much he’s coddled Kendal. That’s the flip side of their relationship which they haven’t showed us all season. He really created all of them through all his manipulations. In the process he’s denied himself a proper heir although he’s too proud and competitive to actually want one.

Great show...no clue where it goes from here but I’m excited to watch.

so as soon as they showed the road and how he was driving I pretty much expected this is exactly what will happen

She channeled the shit out of her dad in her exchange with Nate. From the signature "Fuck off", to "I'm Shiv fucking Roy"

>The whole rocket launch thing was crazy. Roman is completely
>useless but hilarious.

What happens to people outside their 1% bubble isnt even real to them. I don't think Roman really cared that people were likely dead outside of him blowing it. Its amazing how theyre making a show so dark and bleak so entertaining. His reaction to a couple thumbs was hilarious though. His reaction in the bathroom was epic. Also Gerri is kind of awesome

>Greg continues to come thru...can’t wait to see how he grows
>in the show.

Dude leveraged Kendall and managed to still look like a cute bunny rabbit while doing it. Someone pointed out in the Ordelon episode it ended with him eating California Pizza Kitchen lol

Shiv is the closest thing. Shes got the fierceness and shes the only kid who has a career that isnt entirely daddy based.

>Great show...no clue where it goes from here but I’m excited

Also read something that said this should be a 3 season show. So far I think I agree

to take over. He groomed Kendal but also broke him so that he’d always be his bitch. So he has two imperfect heirs that could compliment each other but will likely never work together. The other two are useless.

I’m guessing they abandon the take over within the family storyline. Logan clearly won that. Only thing I can figure is that Stewie somehow knows or finds out what Kendal did and him and Sally try to use it against Logan somehow. Those cruise files must still play a part too.

And even she has her share of issues

Have we seen much Connor and Logan interaction? He's the oldest but kinda gets the middle child treatment. Logan called Kendall his number one boy, I first took it as he was his first born, as much as favorite, and forgotten for a minute wasn't the eldest. Plus we dont know anything about Connor's mom.

His kids are all completely reliant on him, and it's by design, but its stunted their growth. He groomed Kendall but not really. Hes kind of realizing he fucked up. For the show Kendall is somewhat the protagonist and sympathetic character, but even for that, it's not like his "do good things" for the company vision is anything remotely honorable. He wants to be the tech-bro version of his dad.

In response to Reply # 0

I came across this article from a couple weeks back that touches on it.
Talks about how even movies with anti-capitalist messages like Wall Street tend to make being obscenely wealthy still seem kind of awesome, but there's not much in this show that makes you that envious.

You see it alot with Greg and Tom's interactions. When Tom clowns him for wanting California Pizza Kitchen, I thought he'd take him to a bomb high end steakhouse or something, but instead they go eat Ortolan that I assume is crazy expensive and looks disgusting. They go to the club just to hang out alone together away from the action and spend thousands on alcohol because it's what they're supposed to do ("we're being totally ripped off" it's great!"). Even that exclusive sex party didn't look appealing at all. Tom gets snowballed because he thinks it's just what you do.

Compare that to something like Billions where even if you don't strive to be them, a lot of shit they do and have seems pretty fucking great, and you see the allure for someone like Taylor getting sucked in. But as we talked about earlier in this thread, the people on Billions are talented, and highly intelligent. The Roys are second rate people with inherited wealth (Connor and Roman being the worst). It's fun contrasting these shows. i love them for different reasons.

66. "no, you're right. everyone on this show with "less-than" looks better-of..."
In response to Reply # 62

the first episode had roman betting that kid 1,000,000 to hit a home-run or whatever and despite the taunting, that kid has a father that loves him and a hot meal. roman can't get it up and is self-aware enough to know he has a borderline (full-on, really) personality disorder, which was also the best wedding speech ive ever seen.

everyone with big money in this show is miserable.

what's truly incredible about this show is 2 things:
1. how fucking slow it started off and how unworthy these characters were of being interesting. i think a lot of people checked the f out after 2 or 3 episodes. I think Thanksgiving showed the promise with the g Jimmy Cromwell)
2. how well the writers accomplished making the viewer simultaneously dislike and be invested int here people. this is not a case of disliking but rooting for them. we're not "rooting" for them. this is not an anti-hero situation. these are all awful people we'd prefer not succeed. but we are invested in their story. i've dropped out of shows for making me try to root for bad people, but its the brilliant ones that overcome that.

a few notes:
-the mom was giving off major phoebe waller bridge vibes. she was amazing and i would love to see more of her in s02 or in the future.

-the roman bathroom rocket launch scene was easily kieren culkins most impressive acting of the season and it was accomplished without him saying a word for 2 minutes. that's not shade, btw. i love roman and his wedding speech.

- all of these people are so self-absorbed and self-involved that cousin greg showing even an ounce of foresight or strategy makes him look like the smartest guy in the room. he's not smart. he's just desperate. it's impressive really.

- logan obviously won the season. him and kendall are two of the most interesting characters on tv when they're in the room together. the way kendall came down for breakfast in his little outfit and then sunk into logan's couch and collapsed while logan stroked his daddy issues masterfully? that was a stroke of genius writing/acting/directing/cinematography.

-shiv found a man just dumb enough and desperate for wealth enough to play this shit on. she's not gonna succeed long term.

-kendall is the best character on the show. from his opening scenes in episode 1 looking a don jr wannabe trying to big talk the boardroom and buy that app, wow he's come a far way. what a performance by jeremy strong all season. i loved this guy in the big short but he really flexed his skills this whole season. brilliant acting in the hostile takeover episode, prague, austerlitz, pre-nuptial, and the finale. emmy worthy for sure (for brian cox too)

for sure. I watched this show mainly because it featured Brian Cox. Even though I liked episode 2, by 3 i was considering checking out because it was starting to look like he was going to be bedridden all season. I'm glad i stuck it out.

>a few notes:

she reminded me a bit of Lady Ollenna in game of thrones. Trying to imagine her and Logan together haha

those expressions. dude literally washed his hands, and went back to the party lol

he's the closest thing to an actual person people recognize or can get behind.

Kendall looked like a little boy dressed up for brunch. They captured that whole thing perfectly.

He's so painful and wonderful to watch at the same time. His whole act with those art girls.. trying to act cool, then trying to be "real" by taking off his shoes and coming clean that he was trying too hard, comes off even more phony, and even more like he's trying too hard. Strong is crushing it.

And it ended up being excellent. Great season, great ending. Tom is one of my favorite television characters in recent memory. He's so hateable and so sympathetic at the same time.

none of these people ever even mention the thousands of people who work for them. even when Roman thought people were likely dead, he couldn't see past himself.

You know you're right. I mean the explosion situation was the obvious one, but the entire season not a single one of them mentioned their employees/workers. I'd imagine that was on purpose and is pretty standard procedure for people like them.

Yea he was great. And also hysterical. Like I laughed at so many of his antics even though he is an awful person. Though I think he's far less awful than most other characters. Think the scene where Shiv disclosed her affair was what sold me, I was like "OK this dude's not *that* terrible" haha. You could feel the dude's soul being snatched, the actor (not sure his name) played that moment really really well.

I saw someone compare tom to being a hybrid of Peyton Manning and Brendan Fraser and I honestly haven't been able to take him seriously since haha. seriously though, i only like him when he gets serious for a minute like the "pour it back in the bottle" scene or when he pushed greg around while out for a run before the wedding. but i get that him being a doofus is what allows the payoff when he gets serious.

i liked the episode where he takes greg around to show him how great being rich is. it helped the audience remember that they're not rooting for this guy to succeed/not get cheated on by shiv. he's just as bad as the Roys. They were born into it. He WANTS it. He doesn't love Shiv anymore than she doesn't love him. He swallows his own seed the second he gets a chance in "Prague"

Granted, I waited to watch the show until 9 of the 10 episodes had aired because that's just a thing that I do with most shows that are new to me anymore, so by the time I'd come to it I'd already seen a ton of headlines about how in love with this show critics had become and how it was the best thing this summer. In effect I was probably ready to wait for the show to "get good" if it wasn't immediately so.

But I almost immediately saw this show as a sort of Arrested Development style comedy set in a modern world where everyone continued to behave like everything carried the stakes of Game of Thrones but learned English by exclusively listening to Kenny Powers interviews. To me, by the end of the first episode I was already so invested in the scale of the dialogue and the tragicomedy of the entire scenario that it was immediately my new favorite comfort food on television.

I never even reached the point that these characters were unlikable, really. I get that they are not good people, but neither were any of the characters in Arrested Development (other than George Michael, and even he wanted to fuck his cousin), and that only made them more interesting to watch.
