"Captain Marvel (Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, 2019)"

We got Fury, the 90s setting, & Skrulls.

Just announced that we also got Ronan back, Coulson back, Djimon's character from the first Guardians is back.

This shit might end up being Black Panther special b.

Coulson isn't making this "Black Panther special" and there's very little they can do to reach that level with this movie. Captain Marvel just isn't going to be that level of cultural phenomena for multiple reasons.

There doing the Skrull-Kree War to introduce new characters as well as bringing back some old ones to possibly show how SHIELD is formed.

Yeah, I'd say that's Black Panther special.

It may not be for you, but comic geeks this shit is crazy.

As a comic geek, I'm superhyped to see the Skrull-Kree War happen on the big screen. Also bring back characters from GOTG and Coulson along with a two-eyed Nick Fury.... shit's going to be dope B.

They are setting up for their next phase with this one and it sounds like it's going to be lit.

I can give a fuck less about "cultural phenomenons" (I don't even know where that came from). I'm more about these Marvel movies evolving into special films in their own right.

I'm so hyped for this shit. I feel very bad for Ant-Man and the Wasp as that shit is sandwich between much more spectacular films.

exciting as everything they do with obscure character/storylines, "Black Panther special" means some specific shit and Captain Marvel most likely won't be that.

Cool they're adapting an old school event but that's still not "Black Panther special", bruh

what does "black panther special" even mean to you?

the way you use it, it's simply a movie you're excited for and means absolutely nothing. It's useless hyperbole and I thought you might actually have a meaning instead, sorry

You came into the post with your chest puffed out cause this shit ain't special TO YOU.

You could've said that and kept it moving.

Instead you come in saying that this won't be special in terms of cultural phenomenons when no one said that shit. In fact, I doubt this will even come close to what BP made box office wise.

Blade Runner 2049 is special and so is ANNIHILATION. Those aren't "cultural pheomenons". If that's how you're juding Black Panther in the first place then you failed.

Bro, the entire lobby of a movie theater near my crib, a theater that is ordinarily always near empty, was completely filled with people waiting to see Black Panther, wearing daishikis and all kinds of cultural gear. My Puerto Rican homie was there in a daishiki and I didn’t even know he considered himself to be Black LOL true story. There is no no NO way Captain Marvel has a fraction of the cultural impact as BP, not even amongst comics fans. Who was really riding for Ms Marvel like that back in the day? The main thing I remember her for was getting beat up by Rogue and getting her powers taken LMAO

obviously, it will still do good Marvel Studios numbers but "Black Panther Special" (to me) did mean something specific about the overwhelming support of underrepresented audiences but white woman/girl lead sci-fi/fantasy action adventure pictures aren't all that rare for this movie to reach "Black Panther special", imo

like, I doubt my Ma and half our church is going to see Captain Marvel all together like "Black Panther" or "Girls Trip". Certainly, some of those church people are going to see "Captain Marvel" in theaters because it's freaking Marvel but I sincerely doubt it's going to reach anything near the cultural phenomenon of "Black Panther" which wasn't made such a huge hit because of "comic geeks" but because of underrepresented audiences getting a big budget picture filled with mostly people of color FOR FUN; that what was special about "Black Panther", not the comic book hype but the hype from THE PEOPLE

half the response in this thread are Luke warm about this movie from "comic geeks". Captain Marvel isn't even that beloved by comic geeks who actually read comics so...

I'm going to see it, that's not even an issue.

But yeah. The trailer looks okay. Nothing special yet.

My interest in this is that it's not only leading us straight to Avengers 4, but it's also Marvel's first female led superhero flick, aka the answer to Wonder Woman (it shouldn't be that way, in the sense that no one compares Iron Man to Bat Man, but let's be honest). On top of that, though, I think a lot is riding on Captain Marvel serving as the glue to hold the MCU together after the apparent changing of the guard that is bound to happen in Avengers 4. The character is going to have to have hella charisma if she is going to fill the shoes of Tony Stark and (perhaps) Steve Rogers.

I really want this to be another hit. So far Marvel/Disney has been on a streak, so hopefully they have been testing the shit out of this. Since it seems like Captain Marvel will have a major role in Avengers 4 and the MCU going forward, a lot is riding on this one. The stakes are too high to give us another Thor 2 at this point.

I still think that Disney should go back to releasing certain trailers in theaters first.

We've all gotten so used to seeing trailers on youtube weeks or months before seeing them in theaters. If they hit us with a theater-exclusive trailer all of a sudden, one that hadn't been circulating on the internet for weeks prior, it would blow everyone's minds.

Seriously, how cool would that be? Everyone is waiting for the Avengers 4 trailer to drop. If they just snuck the first trailer into the theaters, whatever movie they attached it to would do INSTANT numbers, at least on that opening day. Even if the movie itself was some bullshit, people would go just for the first glimpse of the trailer. Then let it explode on youtube right after that.

I'm sure there's a huge cost difference in doing it that way, but it would be more exciting to me, at least.

it's better to drop an HD copy everywhere at once. i also like that they don't hold onto trailers too long after they've debuted at special events like Comic Con.

You might be right, yes, the result would mean bootleg trailers shared on the internet...but personally I used to get waaaay more excited about seeing new trailers in theaters than I am about seeing them on youtube. The hype was another part of what I loved about the movie going experience. For that reason I was super uptight about getting to the theater early. There's really no point to that nowadays.

I have supreme confidence in Marvel, I will 100% see this movie. However, having known nothing of Brie Larson before this I have to say that from the trailer I'm not so sure. For a character that's supposed to be so strong she just doesn't convince me. Mostly I think it's the voice.

Edit: actually after rewatching not just the voice itself, but the delivery of the lines running throughout the trailer. Compared to SLJ for example, his lines are more natural and convincing. She SOUNDS like she acting.

We'll see if I feel different as more trailers hit and after the movie comes out.

In response to Reply # 58

Brie Larson: There are a ton of films with her. See Room, Free Fire, and Short Term 12.

Capitan Marvel: There haven't been any films that mention the character until the reveal at the end of Infinity War. If you want to read up on her, there's a long history of the character but I would start with her more recent series and Civil War 2 (which she's a big part of)

Other than that, I'm confused about your questions sir.

My sister and I were talking last night and while I want to support a movie centered around a woman. Neither of us felt compelled to see it because the trailers make the movie seem cookie-cutter.

But I do remember seeing a commercial where the arc of Captain Marvel's character was an extension of a drive she's had to have her skills accepted despite men's sexism. That kind of piqued my interest but for the most part this movie doesn't look much different from Aquaman. Another film with bad marketing.

Of all of the recent Marvel films there hasn't be one stinker, not only have they not been bad, they've been entertaining as all get out and doing a great job with comic aesthetic and continuity. PLUS THEY ARE FUN and look great.

There's zero risk here.

Really, bwood could post that Captain Marvel is the worst MCU flick since Thor: The Dark World, and it wouldn't change the fact that I already bought my ticket a week ago have no regrets.

But, and I'm not trying to raise the brother too high, when he comes in and says "that shit was FIRE!", it gives that extra little bit of excitement that I'm going to an EVENT.

On the other hand, he said Solo was just mediocre and that turned out to be true too.

I don't know man. It's probably the same with you Dae, but being a dad, I get to the theater like 3 times a year, maaaaybe 4, and sometimes most of those end up being MCU movies (unless half are some animated shit that I take the boys to and will 90% nap through, like The Grinch). That extra bit of hype from a trusted third party has me going "Oh shit, this will most definitely be worth the guilt of ditching my wife at home with the kids!" That could just be me though.

I end up seeing like 90% of my films at that 10:30 showing after I do all the house hold stuff. Kids to bed, spend my wife time and then I head out. It makes for a long next day, but it allows for the stability of the house and for me to get what I want.

I don't even know what going to the movies with someone else other than my kids is like. I mean shit I was Mary Poppins (Shit was good and entertaining, but that 20 minute nap in the middle was clutch as fuck)

I just feel like at this point Marvel has earned enough of my respect to give them the benefit of the doubt.

You're not wrong though.

In two hours this managed to:
- introduce Carol and her backstory

- The Skrull-Kree War. And all the characters on each side.

- Uses the 90s setting to it's advantage without beating it to death.

- A buddy movie with Carol and Fury.

- use de-aging technology that doesn't look bad.

- has a very IMPORTANT mid-cerdits scene (post-credits is whatever).

Look I like that this was a more full experience than either AQUAMAN or CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER.

Once you see this, you'll understand why Carol and T'Challa will take over the MCU.

Can't wait to see this shit again.

some of the back stories are lost on me. Usually, I'll take my nephew to see them when he wants to go. Maybe had I gotten into them as a youngster, I'd have the excitement that some of you seem to have.

Captain America was my favorite superhero when I was a kid. I think that was because my mom bought me a Halloween costume one year. I didn't read superhero comics though. Had no interest in them other than what I saw in the newspapers.

Beetle Bailey
Archie
Heathcliff

Just think that it would take a ton of energy to dive into the history of these characters. Also, because I don't know the history of the characters, I don't know if the movie is BS or not. I simply have to judge each film on its own merits except for the franchises I have seen.

Outside of Spiderman, I didn't read ANY of the comics of the superheroes currently in the MCU.

I did read Infinity Gauntlet, so I knew The Snap was comic, but that's about it.

Dr. Strange, Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, Black Widow, Thor, Guardians of the Galaxy, Black Panther...I didn't read any of those comics back in the day. And in the late 80s/early 90s they were not popular titles. It was all about Spiderman, Xmen and the Xmen spinoffs.

In fact if I recall that's part of why the MCU is the way it is; to stay afloat Marvel had to sell off the rights to it's most popular superheroes.

My excitement now is just based on how well Marvel/Disney has evolved these previously unpopular heroes and slowly built up the universe. It's in the spirit of the comics, but outside of Easter eggs here and there, it doesn't rely on the comics as required reading.

I think most of the fanbase is that way, where the main draw is that it's in the spirit of the comics, and that it's one of the most effective cases of a shared universe being brought to the big screen. I still think it's incredible that they pulled that off, even if not all of the movies were amazing.

I had this issue with the Rami Spiderman movies and watching them with my son. When S:3 hit, I knew venom couldn't be done right because there was no Secret Wars, no F4, real Eddie Brock, etc. So in my mind there was no way it could be done right or in a way I;d accept because it didn't follow cannon. My son, on the other hand, only knew Venom from the 90's cartoon, video games and other pop culture references and was still on board. Now, from a basic storytelling and execution standpoint S:3 was still a mess, but I could see why my son was excited about seeing Venom on screen without having to find 20-some year old comics to explain how and why things are happening.

Kind of the same on the MCU as a whole. There will be story beats and threads that are the same or similar, but a lot of lore or character arcs simply can't or won't be done on screen. So I let the movies be their own thing. Based on, or in many cases, influenced by, but not always true to, the comic run. It keeps my innate nerd rage at bay and lets me enjoy the movies with those with less backstory/baggage

Most the fans don't know shit about these Marvel characters before 2008, doesn't matter. I barely knew who Iron Man was when that came out. Only ones I was really familiar with were Hulk and Captain America, but not his entire story. If they make good movies tho, I'm along for the ride.

X-Men I'm much more familiar with and would think would be excited about those movies but they've burned me too many times. Logan was dope but now going back to the same old shit show.

The movie opens tonight and already there are a ton of 1 star reviews on imdb calling the movie boring and trash, just to bring the score down to 6.2 (as of this morning). A lot of them also say that Brie Larson was miscast and gives a wooden performance.

I mean who knows maybe they are right but it is hella suspect.

I'll have to wait and see tomorrow night, but I really doubt that they'll fuck up their winning streak this close to Endgame. It would be a massive fail for Kevin Feige and crew to put all their chips into Captain Marvel being the next leader of the MCU, and then drop a deuce DCEU style. You just know they've test screened the hell out of this.

Like Frank says above, it's a middle of the pack MCU flick, but to me, that makes it above average compared to other non-MCU comic book flicks. It was enjoyable enough. I liked the chemistry between Carol and Nick. This Nick Fury was a lot of fun. He was funny, less cynical and less jaded than the Fury we saw starting with Iron Man. Which makes perfect sense. He must have seen some things in the 13 years since meeting Carol Danvers that made him the guy he currently is in the MCU. The "twist" was serviceable. The Marvel Fanfare was awesome. As was Stan Lee's cameo. It's clear that Captain Marvel is the most powerful hero in the MCU and I feel like Okoye in talking about Scarlet Witch. Where was Carol this whole time? Could have used her when the Chitari attacked New York. This movie obviously answers this question, but I'm like, "Dude! The Avengers could have used her!"

If I had to give the film a grade, I would give it a B-. It wasn't great, but it was serviceable.

While I understand (and agree) with the fact that at this point you gotta be hip to the fact of many aspects of the MCU and they aren't taking time out to re-explain shit, 'Ok, this is a power gem, there's this dude that's a green monster thing called the Hulk...'....holy fucking fanservice Batman. It felt they crammed so many MCU and comic references that at a certain point I was like enough, lol.

This could be my own personal issue; it wouldn't necessarily ruin it for someone who just takes things at face value and do. But I felt that the broader MCU aspects of the movie kept on winking at me and it lessened the impact of the movie itself.

Everything else was great:

-Loved the nuance between the good and the bad guys
-Loved the interplay with all the characters

In response to Reply # 0

From 11-14 or so, I read X-Men comics (mainly Uncanny), but that was about it. Nothing else was appealing to me and when I lost the spark, it was over. Still, I knew most of the major Marvel characters pretty well to be mostly entertained by the movies.

That said, I had no clue who Captain Marvel was, as a character, until twitter trolls started going ape over this casting. Is there some larger relevance that justifies their reaction to this or are they just going crazy because they are miserable pieces of shit? Is anyone, at all, really THAT into Captain Marvel?

I've definitely seen a lot of comments about how her comic runs have seen a significant ramp up in production value and whatnot in the past couple years in the lead up to this movie.

I was also never an avid comic fan so all I've ever really known of Captain Marvel was that it was funny to me DC Comics had a character called Captain Marvel; it's kind of interesting to look into the history of the character actually.

I'm fine with a wrinkle like this getting thrown into the mix, though, it's kind of one my favorite goofy tropes in nerdy media, where an ultra powerful wrinkle gets thrown in late in the game that totally changes the stakes. I think it'd be REAL cool, for example, if the X-Men franchise used its 100% Fox swnasong to bring Legion into the films and do what my comic reading friends tell me he usually does in the comics, which is just make quips about life's ultimate insignificance and then reset the timeline so new artists or writers can come in and tell their own stories.

Excited to see this movie tomorrow!

I was into comics for the last half of the 80s and most of the 90s, and until Image formed, I was exclusively into Marvel comics. That said, I had no idea who Captain Marvel was. I definitely didn't read any Captain Marvel comics, nor see her pop up in any of the other comics I read.

But that said, outside of Spiderman, I didn't read or like ANY of the comics for the superheroes currently in the MCU. I read Infinity Gauntlet and that follow up with Adam Warlock (Infinity Crusade? Something like that), but that's about it.

I think it's just another example of dudes being internet salty at another potential box office hit starring a woman.

But who cares. I'm excited to see this tonight. I only know Brie Larson from Room and the ten minutes she was in Scott Pilgrim. But I kind of like that even more. I also only knew Chris Evans from his relatively small role in Scott Pilgrim, and that turned out pretty well.

In response to Reply # 128

Marvel always had legacy heroes that were often different from the originals like when James Rhodes became Iron Man or Monica Rambeau took up the title of Captain Marvel.

But with Obama being elected, Marvel went hammer with new diversity characters and just like the backlash from Obama being president, the rightwing and centrist comic fans started shitting on any non-white male character getting pushed.

Specifically, Captain Marvel was formally Ms Marvel who basically wore a space bikini but changed to a full covered space suit since she was promoted from Ms. to Captain and has been a source of hatred from a lot of fans for these reasons and the way she was written in certain comics, ironically as a hawkish hard ass

but really, the Star Wars sequels and Black Panther films were targeted the same way as this movie, separate from comic fandom. Those are the films where the main heroes specifically are not white dudes

Kelly Sue DeConnick basically invented this version of Captain Marvel, and Marvel has fast tracked her to headliner status despite being a relatively thin character. The trolls are terrible, but it’s also true that Carol isn’t nearly as interesting or well developed as her proponents think. Right now she’s the Big Blue Girl Scout.

Hell, Kamala Kahn has been around about half the time and is already much, much more interesting, relatable, and enjoyable than Carol. And, look, if this is all a bridge to get us Miss Marvel stories it’s entirely worth it.

Video even gets into the DC-stuff and the angry internet white guy backlash.

Same guy did another two-part video when the character first got "big" again in 2012.

Basically, she was an Avenger in the '70s who started hanging out with the X-Men in the '80s and '90s and then revived in the '10s.

They needed to make Carol far more interesting than she is in the comics. This version of Captain Marvel has a five year history, and even Kelly Sue DeConnick struggled to make her into something more than a generic GI Jane clone.

Marvel could have given her more lighthearted, almost silly moments to make an overpowered character more relatable, but they went the other way. They hired a so-so actress who looks the part and had her be a generic tough girl, with the only humor being her cracking on other people. Since she’ll presumably be less Kree killbot in the sequels, I hope we can a more well rounded character next time. A sidekick (KAMALA NOW) would help.

On the overpowering: it’s cool that she’s the most powerful hero in the MCU. It isn’t cool that she’s clearly five hundred times more powerful than Thor or the Hulk. A huge nerf is coming. They’ve painted themselves into a huge bind for the sequel villains. She has no classic enemies or classic storylines they can steal from. This version of Captain Marvel could fight Galactus’s heralds, which makes me think he’s the next big bad, which, awesome and suggests Reed Richards and them coming. They’re also set up to do an amazing Annihilation Wave story that could involve TChalla, the Four, Carol, the Kree and Skrull, etc,

Actually, as I write through this, I realize they’re going to need some heavy hitters for the post Avengers phases, so strike everything about overpowering I just said. I am very dumb.

On the plus side, all the skrulls and the Kree were great, as was lieutenant trouble. Edit: I loved the origin of her powers, and the writers deserve huge props for the most interesting presentation of an origin story I’ve seen with the flashback stuff. Oh, and Kelly Sue’s cameo and the train fight scene.

as far as recent MCU movies go, I enjoyed it. I also liked what I thought were Pulp Fiction nods in the movie - when Fury was driving, and when Talos was drinking through the straw, a bit like how Sam Jack did in the 'tasty burger' scene.

Edit: sorry replied in the wrong spot

Really proud of Marvel for evolving from the traditional “good guy versus bad guy” paradigm to more nuanced interactions between characters with conflicting motivations. Any more that I could say would be spoilers. Also introducing the concept of dictatorships and refugees, as well as conscientious objectors, was super cool.

Maybe the next film will take place prior to . Aren't we to assume she went to fight in the Kree/Skrull war? So maybe the the next film will be about her time in the war.

I had no problems with the trailers. How a few people here were saying she seemed robotic in them. Never even crossed my mind. But in the movie she just seemed off. I dont know. She just bugged me. Hopefully she grows on me. But overall middle of the road marvel movie. It was funny. Her powers were just wooooow. Endgame is about to be wild. My son didnt seem to into it until the end. When she finally used her powers. I think he was blown away. I think the timing is definitely helping this flick and the end credit scene from Infinity War. Everyone who wasnt familiar wanted to know who she was. So excellent way to use your big movie to push a hero nobody knows about and get them hyped.

I thought Samuel L. Jackson was fun it in, but NOT as Nick Fury. I mean it's NICK FURY. Head badass in leather with an eye patch. Tough ass Nick Fury , head of Shield,

Here he's just a comedic sidekick. Nothing tough about him. And this is when he was younger and presumably capable of getting into more action. I get that he's not supposed to be as experienced or knowledgeable of superheroes or outer space stuff. Still though he plays it as far from the comic book Nick Fury as possible.

Overall though it was okay. Middle level MCU. I enjoyed it but like Dt. Strange I don't need to see it again. I also like Brie Larson but I want to see her get more comfortable in the role, because as yet I don't think her character is quite strong enough to lead the whole MCU

I'm glad Black Panther didn't have to be an origin story, and even though they put some twists into this one it's still an origin story.

ant-man managed to beat that by turning itself into a heist flick, but it's tough to do.

I've only been disappointed by maybe 2-3 MCU movies out of like 20.

For me, most of them fall into the category of either top ten superhero movie quality (i.e. Infinity War), or One-and-done flicks that I just don't need to see again. This was in that latter category, along with Dr. Strange, the first Captain America, etc).

Again, I am interested in seeing whether Brie Larson will be able to grow into the role enough to carry the MCU when the old heads exit.

Still not 100% sold on Brie, but I enjoyed this flick quite a bit. Middle of the road for the MCU, but still better than anything from DC. Endgame can't come soon enough.

I'm still in disbelief of how far we've come in this MCU to where this intergalactic shit is believable.

Man, I'd agree but just watched Aquaman and that shit was very close to the same quality as CM, I can't call which I'd say is better right now. I was not expecting to like that as much as I did which probably played into my enjoyment more.

That Black Manta fight was the awesome tho. lol

Sure have to start somewhere. The battle is over and Disney/Marvel won by a landslide. DC pretty much pulled out the race that never became a race now, gonna work on standalones and build those up. Also not many point out that Fox screwed up a lot of Marvel movies as well over the years. 2 out of 6 good X-Men movies, 3 terrible FF movies, etc.

All it takes are a few good writers/directors to get back on track, casting hasnt been too bad except for Eisenberg Lex which was an awful decision by Snyder. James Gunn coming over for SS2 is hopefully a good move.

I just want entertaining movies, not taking glee in seeing the other side throw shit against the wall. lol

While AM was better than anything before and I liked it more than DC's best effort in WW, CM was still much better and more entertaining to me. But yeah, DC's best being compared to Marvel's middle of the road movies is funny.

I liked the supporting cast a lot (particulary Ben Mendelsohn, who was great), but I thought Captain Marvel herself was a one-dimensional bore. she basically had one expression for the entire film, and the attempts to show her character progression over time were muddied by confusing editing.

the 90s call-backs were fun at first, but they hit those a bit too hard and started venturing into eye-roll territory.

three-quarters into the movie, I was waiting for it to end so I could see the post-credits scene. then when it hit, I found myself feeling emotions about CM sharing the screen with the OG Avengers — characters I actually care about. and she's showing up to save *them*? she ain't worthy!!

it makes me concerned about the future of the MCU if someone with such little charsima is gonna be the new focus.

(the Stan Lee tribute at the start was nice, tho.)

I think bammas are in here grading on a curve. Go back to some of those other films, they didn't age well.

The 90's music piece I enjoyed. I think folks look at anything other than pure score as forced. I enjoyed the No doubt, the Hole, The Nirvana, I enjoyed ALL of it.

The action was good, and it started early and I was into the film.

I have NO CLUE why everyone is so against Brie Larson. Outside of her forced Action Stance when she was about to give you the glowing hands I liked her smart ass schtick, I liked her thing with Lashana Lynch the Chocolatey Goodness of Maria Rambeaux. Would've liked to have seen more between them, but i'm ok with it especially because that shit was a solid 2 hours.

I liked turning the Skrulls on its head. I liked how powerful Carol is, and having her sort of realize she was the baddest on the block in fight was very cool to me.

The buddycop routine worked for me. The eye thing was stupid, but that wouldn't detract from my enjoyment of the film.

All in all I thought it was a good introduction to an incredibly powerful character who is very important moving forward.

That during this battle with a crew of Kree soldiers who were supposed to be the shit, she took a heavy blow and realized that it didn't hurt anymore. Yea she "Had it up to here" shit makes sense when you listen and watch the damn movie.

We letting blue eyed white dudes get away with dumb shit since forever and in the span of 4 years between Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel we levying every piece of criticism we can find. Now everyone is an expert on editing and score? FOH.

About the No Doubt song I mean. I guess I just don't like the song (just like dude said about Star Trek and the Beastie Boys), but I see your point, contextually it made sense for the scene. At the time I didn't really think about it beyond the irony of her being
"just a girl" while whooping everyone's ass.

Besides that, I also liked Brie Larsen in the role. Still, I'm looking forward to seeing her get more comfortable in it, the way that Hemsworth did with Thor, or even Evans with Cap (I liked The First Avenger well enough, but I feel like he didn't nail down the character until Winter Soldier).

Live in these characters is when the movies started to take off. Hemsworth by Ragnorak was a damn near different Character and better for it. Evans is who people will look to when thinking about CAP. He is CAP at this point, but it took a little time. I mean even Chad was a little wooden in Civil War. When brie gets to the point where they take the training wheels off and let her cook, I agree with you she'll be even better in the role.

movie was fine. I like Larson and love that song... but it didn't fit the fight. I also rolled my eyes at the Nirvana song and they're my favorite band. As someone else said, the 90's stuff start off fun and then get to be a little too much by the end.

I enjoyed it and I get it making lots of money just in context (a female driven superhero movie that, IMO, was superior to Wonder Woman and not weighed down by the dumpster fire that is the DCEU)...but man, I didn't think it was *that* good, as in making a billion dollars this fast.

I'm glad. I like Brie Larson and I was crossing my fingers that this wouldn't hurt the MCU's hit ratio, especially as this was both the lead-in to Endgame AND the setup for the future of the MCU beyond Endgame. Even so, I wouldn't have guessed that a middle of the road MCU movie (alongside the first Thor, first Cap and Dr. Strange) would have done this well).

knowingly exploit an underserved audience cushions any blowback of your audience getting tired of these flicks

while scheduling and scripting them as important pieces before the big avengers movies means any iffyness by people who usually don't buy tickets to black movies or women-led movies gets turned down, cuz you gotta see it.

I had a friend who hadn't seen it and wanted to before Endgame.

The theater was 1/3 full, but I'd say it was 67% women and 33% men - so this still has appeal to women - maybe it's word of mouth too?
