I wondered what he and the rest of The Coup got into after they had their run. Would have never guessed it would have been film-making.

Props to him. I hope it gets seen by a good number of people.

Agreed, though it felt a little long to me. At the screening I went to people were generally laughing throughout but once the 3rd act hit, it was a huge gasp.

This is going to be polarizing but I enjoyed it and all of the performances were good.

I honesty refuse to talk about this flick until week three or so, when people have had time to see it and really work through their thoughts on the film. It is enjoyable on the surface with deeper meanings if you want to dive for them, like most of the best musical work from Boots and The Coup. Almost got misty eyed when I saw that dedication to Pam the Funkstress at the end. Sigh. RIP Pam

A lot to catch/appreciate once you are already familiar with the plot. I will say (and I felt this on Friday), it’s maybe a *little* longer than it could have been, but right now this is the movie to beat in 2018 for me.

I definitely look forward to seeing more films from Boots Riley. The visual aspects to the film were easily the best parts and I hope this comes out on blu-ray with commentary tracks so I can get more details pertaining to the choices made for this flick. I'm certain there were details I missed in my first go around. Like most folks, the last third or so of the film lost me and I am curious if any changes were made regarding the sharp turn the movie took when Boots Riley went to shop this flick around for investors.

I hope this film does well enough for Boots Riley do make even more films.

I believe Mr. ______ had some remorse about leading Cassius to Steve Lift once they got to the party. He continuously tries to volunteer himself as a buffer between Steve and Cassius. On first watch, I just assumed he was trying to make himself important. But on this viewing, I came to the conclusion that he was uneasy about everything after the rap scene (he's the only person that doesn't encourage Cassius to do this). Also, when Mr. _____ tells Cassius to go to Steve's office, he had just coked himself up....almost as if he had to get himself worked up to set Cassius up (even though he had no problems keeping that bloody rag).

I caught all of the horse imagery in Steve Lift's house this time around. There are pictures of horses, busts, furniture, etc.

Steve Lift's proposal wasn't a proposal at all but more of an oral terms of agreement, to which Cassius essentially signed up before hearing everything first by snorting that (spiral leading to a horse).

I felt like a scene between Cassius and Sal had to have been cut because that hilarious argument seemed even more out of the blue this time around....one day Cassius is halfheartedly going along with the plan, the next he's like 'fuck all this'.

My mind still yells 'Charlottesville' at that one shot where Cassius sees the armored van speeds towards those people only to stop with a thud.

And I need someone to place that one shot where Cassius is getting punched in the stomach on that game show because I feel like I've seen that exact shot somewhere (complete with slo-mo). I'm thinking I saw it on Sweetback or Superfly...I'm not sure.

No coincidence he’s wearing an eye patch while turning a figurative blind eye to everything, at least the slave labor part

What I don’t think we can determine is whether Mr. Bleep knows about the horse mutation program. We could assume he does, and that his defeated tone is from leading Cassius to ultimately become a horse. Or, we could assume Mr.Bleep is actually jealous that Cassius gets intimate face-time with Lift and Mr.Bleep never got that kind of opportunity to establish a similar rapport.

ah! i was wondering about the choice to give him an eyepatch. I thought there was going to be a reveal that he was apart of the Left Eye coalition or something, but the "turning a blind eye" makes sense.

yeah, exactly what he's feeling and what he knows in that scene is not certain

last time I walked out of a theater that shell-shocked was after Children of Men.

What a vibrant movie. The humor, the characters, the scenery...it feels like every last line of script and shot is serving a purpose.

If I had one minor gripe, I can't figure out why Left Eye hooked up with the Asian dude...that doesn't really turn to anything, unless Cash's refusal to know who she hooked up with is to signify he's matured.

You can marinate on the details of this thing for hours, I sure have:

- The white telemarketing manager with the face tattoos. He still gets the title of "manager" with those awful tattoos on his face, surely a black guy would not.

- Left Eye using her own British white lady voice in the art gallery, a reminder that even the most earnest and idealistic artists have to eat the shit sometimes.

- The walls of Cash's apartment being floor to ceiling windows, as if he's living in an exhibit

I can't wait to see this again

I couldn't figure out the significance of that at first either but I think he's throwing shade at unions. The one I'm forced to deal with is shady AF.

i think everyone would enjoy this movie. they may not get or agree with the message but the movie is just fun.

from an artistic viewpoint theres some awesome and creative stuff that was done

story wise, it is entertaining but i do see why some people would be lost in the third act

message wise, im fully on board and i think it was presented in a way that it should get some new people on board.

the movie just seems like an extension of how boots has approached his music. definitely able to express things differently in this media and i think he did a great job of doing so.

maybe im not tuned into the appropriate channels but im surprised there hasnt been any outrage on this movie. seems to be getting a lot of positive press and no pushback. i hope that continues.

i expect this to be a cult classic but one of great quality. it should give boots a bigger platform as well. im excited to see what he does with it.

man, what a great, unique, flick. this is what the world needs more of - original concepts and ideas. not all these damn remakes and adaptations.

great job to everyone involved. definitely going to watch this again and have been hyping it up to my friends to go see it as well.

I loved this film.

The themes, the damage.

LaKeith is great in this. I absolutely love Tessa in everything she does.

Steve Yeun gave something I didn't think he could.

Armie Hammer was great.

I enjoyed Omari Hardwick was great, there's so many questions about his role, how complicit was he.

Man that one scene where Cash is doing it for the white folks, was heartbreaking.

Once he became a power caller, things seemed rushed. The lead up to the party happened almost immediately, and no one besides Mr _____ took a liking to him. No woman feeling him, no dudes trying to befriend him, which would have made his desire to join the new social circle much more natural.

It just frayed a little at the end, but still good overall flick.

the way the white girl was feeling him when she took him up to the Power Caller suite, i thought that was going to be a plotline cause she was THIIIIRSTY.

so much to unpack.
but even the surface level stuff (the world of telemarketing/call centers) hit home for me cos that's my bag (i've been a call center stooge nearly my entire working career).
i did NOT see the 3rd act coming.
but wow.
like others in this post, i need to see it at least one more time.

the third scene is not jarring anymore. knowing what was coming made a lot of the early parts of the movie have a different tone.

definitely see it more as sci-fi

it wasnt as funny the second time though.

definitely something i think everyone should watch. im happy it exists. not necessarily great but gotta give it credit for creativity and message.

i will probably watch it again soon.

The rap scene almost made me do it. The commercial almost made me do it. I don't even remember when I left, I just know I left. What a hot fucking mess.

"Sorry to Bother You" was

Good.

Good movie. Yes, there is symbolism. No, you must not view it with a complete literal eye. This movie won't be for everyone.

BUT, it is a good movie for those who can see the art and receive the message as well as the subliminal sub stories and messages.

Visually it looks great and the cast is good.

I recommend anyone who can look just beyond the surface of a movie and enjoy it to see this movie.

Princeguy reviews:

"No pretentiousness.

No pompous re-interpretations.

Sometimes, a movie is just a movie. You work hard for your money.

The decision is yours.

See and enjoy what YOU like."

Saw it on HULU a couple weeks ago.

It wasn't as good as I thought it was going to be, but it was fun to watch. I enjoyed the creativity of it and several of the performances, but it might be a little too raw in terms of the finished product.

Definitely reminded me of some Michel Gondry/Charlie Kaufman/Spike Jonze shit but told from the POV of a POC..

Overall, I give it a + review. I will probably check for anything Boots puts out in theaters in the future.. He's definitely a better filmmaker than The RZA.

I came to the realization that I am not a fan of Charlie Kaufman like Surreal stuff when I didn't want to rush and see this movie.

But the first 2/3s of the movie wasn't so much surreal as it was Black Mirror-type dystopia which I got into heavily.

Like I can kind of see how WorryFree could easily become a real thing.

I was so into the world building that I was just thrown by the twist in the end. I appreciate it, but it was more than was needed.

Will watch again. Boots Riley is the real deal.
