"My nigga Rian Johnson is doing a new Star Wars trilogy"

A standalone trilogy that's exploring a new part of the galaxy.

It's lit.

FILMS // NOVEMBER 9, 2017

RIAN JOHNSON, WRITER-DIRECTOR OF STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI, TO CREATE ALL-NEW STAR WARS TRILOGY
For director Rian Johnson, Star Wars: The Last Jedi was just the beginning of his journey in a galaxy far, far away.

Lucasfilm is excited to announce that Johnson will create a brand-new Star Wars trilogy, the first of which he is also set to write and direct, with longtime collaborator Ram Bergman onboard to produce.

As writer-director of The Last Jedi, Johnson conceived and realized a powerful film of which Lucasfilm and Disney are immensely proud. In shepherding this new trilogy, which is separate from the episodic Skywalker saga, Johnson will introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored.

“We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”

“We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi,” Johnson and Bergman said in a joint statement. “Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can’t wait to continue with this new series of films.”

Johnson’s upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi arrives in U.S. theaters on Dec. 15, 2017.

No release dates have been set for the new films, and no porgs were available for comment.

There was sith and a lightsaber (which also happened to be the most memorable part of the movie to most) and it was heavily tied into the other movies.

A completely, non skywalker, no-jedi movie set in star wars universe? I think fan boys will flock, but general public outside of that? I dunno.

For the most part all the familiar shit was there to sell the movie with the actual tie in being mostly surprises.

I don't think there's any member of the general population who's going to avoid the movie because it's not tied to a pre-existing mythology within the Star Wars universe. It being part of the Star Wars universe alone is a good enough selling point.

I wonder what they did to convince him to take on helming a whole new trilogy? Last I heard they couldn't get him do the third in the latest trilogy.

Either way, I'm happy about it. He's good at what he does and I wish we could've got another sci-fi film out of him after Looper, but this more than makes up for that.

I don't think he was going to do it on the time line they want as they have a rough scheduele they want to stick to. He was definitely their forst choice. The guy wanted to relax and take some time off. To keep him in the family doing more projects period is probably what they wanted and they gave him this because of how well he did.

I dont but him saying no to 9 to do this. Untill he says it i dont buy what people are making up

I was afraid as the movies continued on they were going to find ways to keep on referencing the OG movies. Like Harrison Ford holograms popping up twenty years down the line. Diminishing return properties (Greedo Greed! 8 episode netflix event! Late Night show based on Mos Eisley Cantina...we can dress Lil Rel as an alien and have him interview guests!)

Hopefully Rian surrounds himself with other creators that got the Universe; Zahn, the writers involved in the Vader comic which apparently is fantastic and we can leave the skywalker ghetto

I dont even want them to do the trilogy on the Old Republic, let that be the tv series and Disney's streaming service's version of GOT wrapped in the lore of Star Wars.

I hope its after Episode 9 (timeline wise) and part of the unknown regions of the galaxy. Only person I want to show up is Thrawn and everyone else are new characters, new stories, new planets, new species, with the history of Star Wars still there but create a whole new chapter.

It only makes sense business wise to really capitalize of what they had going into it and making that HUGE again with as much audiences as they can and then start branching out and reaching out for casual fans by creating new characters and worlds within the Star Wars lore. Can't blow your load early. That would just be stupid.

And I haven't seen that yet and Disney has proven to spend more money to make theo movies right when they feel things are going how they should brand and quality wise (ie. Rogue One, Solo, the games)

With the Last Jedi he solved the question the first commenter here asked, being "Can SW be SW without Sith/Jedi?"

Which was really "Can SW be SW without a Skywalker?"

And the answer is YES.

I wouldn't be surprised if one of the goals for The Last Jedi (be it Rian Johnson's own goal, or that of the producers) was to pave the way for future Star Wars movies with all new characters while still being able to show lightsabers, Jedi, etc.

What I mean is that The Last Jedi opened the door for non-Skywalker related Jedi action in future movies.

Rogue One was great but the Skywalker story was still in the periphery

This will be interesting to see if Disney execs get a bit nervous about this decision.

It will also be interesting to see what kind of numbers this film ends up doing with such mixed feelings by the audience. It is going to do numbers but let’s see what kind of legs it has as fans seem fairly split on this movie.

Star Wars is deeply embedded in nerd culture.

I love nerd culture shit. Absolutely love it. One thing I can admit that others love to shit on the thing they so called love. Some people were going to hate this movie before they even saw it because it wasn't written by them or have the same theories or plot that they would have given the movie.

Movie was no where near as bad as some are making it out to be. But it improves your intelligence score when you hate something that's popular so why not.

The only place that people are split is Rotten Tomatoes Public. It's also at 7.9 on the IMDB public, because angry young male Internet users don't troll IMDB with the same frequency they troll Rotten Tomatoes.

I'm astonished news outlets think that RT Public means anything at all. It's a demographic that is overwhelmingly young, white, male, frequent Internet user. That's a small demographic of the overall audience. Whereas CinemaScore surveys all ages, races, genders, etc. It's a far better representation of audience reception.

A huge chunk of people who didn't like this movie are the geeks who literally spent the last two years analyzing everything they could about Force Awakens and making YouTube videos and forum threads about their theories. There were some people who literally made Star Wars theories into a source of income through YouTube creator accounts.

Geeks like that had a huge negative instant reaction to Last Jedi because they came in an Excel spreadsheet with all of their theories and predictions, and TLJ threw all of that out of the window. I'm including myself in that geek group too because I spent hella time watching videos and reading theories. It took me time to process what I saw in that movie. I really think that many of them will eventually get on board after they come to terms with their expectations being so wrong.

Rian Johnson is the man.

This movie is making plenty of money.

The franchise is safe. They have a hit and they knew they had a hit before the movie was released. Otherwise they wouldn't have been so quick to give Rian Johnson the keys to drive the next trilogy.

I'm sure once the whinier nerds cool down, the universal opinion on this movie will change. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if it's eventually thought of as the second best Star Wars film overall.

If you forget everything you know about Star Wars, and then watch the first one, and then have Empire come out 3 years later with all the anticipation that we have today, then everything that happens in Empire comes way out of left field. I wrote this in the main TLJ post:

Last Jedi reminds me of ESB. Not in terms of the plot although there are some similarities, but in how it fits within the trilogy, and where it took the series after the first film. As a kid, Empire was my least favorite of the original trilogy, and it wasn't until I was high school/college age that I realized that it was the best. Because if you watched Star Wars, then later watched Empire, there was so much that wouldn't have gone the way you expected. The entire movie was the "good guys" taking Ls, and instead of the triumph of blowing up the Death Star in A New Hope, it ends with the "good guys" retreating with their tails between their legs and the main character dealing with a huge revelation that both he and the audience don't know is true since the reveal came from the villain. The same overarching thing happens in TLJ without actually recycling the plot at all.

Yeah. Y'all niggas are gonna be mad. And I'll be laughing.

http://www.slashfilm.com/new-star-wars-trilogy-details-2/

Director Rian Johnson is on top of the world right now: his Star Wars: The Last Jedi is one of the best-reviewed films in the Star Wars franchise, and the film just had the second biggest opening weekend of all time. But Johnson isn’t going to rest on his laurels. The filmmaker is already planning his new Star Wars trilogy, which will be set outside the on-going saga. Johnson is understandably tight-lipped about most details of his still-in-development trilogy, but he recently provided an update on the project.

If you thought Star Wars: The Last Jedi felt very different when compared to the rest of the Star Wars franchise, you haven’t seen anything yet. Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is already in the planning stages for his new Star Wars trilogy, which will be far removed from the on-going Star Wars saga and take audiences to even more unexpected places. Obviously we’re still a few years away from seeing Johnson’s new trilogy, so it’ll be some time before we have specific details. In fact, the trilogy itself was greenlit without a story.

But Johnson spoke with The Hollywood Reporter and gave a few interesting updates on the project. When THR asked the director when and where in the timeline his new trilogy will be set, Johnson said he hasn’t quite nailed that aspect down yet, and revealed that it’s one of the elements he’s not entirely interested in:

“I’m at the very beginning of trying to come up with it, and honestly, timeline-wise, I’m not sure yet. In a way it’s interesting, but in a way it’s the least interesting part of it to me. I’m more thinking of what’s the story going to be, who is it going to follow? What elements is it going to have? What kind of drama is in it? My head right now is more in that place. I haven’t really, really gotten into it. Right now I’m mostly excited by the potential and just starting to form little clusters of ideas of what it might become.”

One of the most appealing elements of this new franchise, to me at least, is the potential it has to take the Star Wars universe to new and exciting places, so if the films end up being far removed from the saga as we know it, I’ll be fine with it.

While Johnson is in the process of wrapping-up a lengthy press tour for The Last Jedi, he shows no signs of slowing down. In the THR interview, the director says that rather than feel exhausted by the long process of making The Last Jedi, he’s energized to get right back to work:

“We’re going to figure out the timing of the next one. We haven’t figured it out yet. I’ll say, I don’t feel like, ‘Oh my God, I’m exhausted, I need to sit on a beach for a month.’ I feel creatively energized right now. I feel like I want to jump right into work. This whole process has left me feeling ready to jump in and do it again right away. I don’t know why. I don’t know if that’s a good sign.”

As a big fan of The Last Jedi and Johnson’s work in general, I can’t wait to see what he comes up with for this new trilogy.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is now playing in theaters everywhere.
