With everyone bitching about these X-Men movies, this is definitely something different, with a very cool cast.

I'm not even that much into the New Mutants like that, but I'll hold out hope that this one can deliver.

Think it'll be R?

You're not wrong, but I'm hoping that framing a superhero movie with the setup of a horror movie will be a decent change of pace?

I can at least say that this looks better than X-Men Apocalypse.

I'm more interested in this than in the Dark Phoenix one. At least this is attempting to go in a different direction.

"Whitewashing" is more about actual phenotypical appearance, than nationality.

Roberto's dark-skinned appearance (and his experience with how the world, Brazil specifically, viewed him because of it) was built in to the character from his earliest appearance. He was clearly meant to be Afro-Brazilian/Latino.

The creators even had characters, in-panel, in-universe directly harassing him because of it: https://worldofblackheroes.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/sunspot-origin.jpg

Though, Marvel has been recently depicting Sunspot with a lighter-skinned appearance, that isn't consistent with the in-universe experience the character clearly has had because of his "race," nor his depiction over the last 30+ years.

-More closely based to Xavier's school/home.
-Diverse, though lesser-known characters.
-Main villain character with ties back to one of the team members.

New Mutants is a different matter, however. When the film was initially delayed, it was reported that Fox wanted to do some reshoots to make the movie scarier, even going so far as to add a new character. That still holds true, and while we hear the film tested well, it’s not “scary” enough. Director Josh Boone delivered a cut of the film that he was happy with, but Fox wants this movie to stand out as tonally distinct the same way Logan and Deadpool did.

The reshoots that the studio wants are now even more significant. We’re hearing that at least 50% of the movie may be reshot, and they’re adding one or two new characters who will be present throughout the entirety of the film—this isn’t simply adding a cameo. Moreover, Boone has been having some creative differences with the studio over the requested changes to the movie, so the reasons for the New Mutants delay are more complex than why Dark Phoenix is being pushed.

I don't know if it's because of the acquisition or because Fox dropped a deuce.

My guess is the latter. At a test screening folks were probably like "this does not work as a horror movie OR a superhero movie. In fact fuck this movie in the first place."

According to this Variety article: https://variety.com/2019/film/features/fox-disney-earnings-dark-phoenix-stuber-racing-in-the-rain-1203300260/amp/?__twitter_impression=true

When Disney doesn't know what to do with an X-MEN film, it's probably best to just cut losses and put it out on Hulu.

This is the new The Aristocrats. Like tell a joke and end it with New Mutants rather than The Aristocrats.

This was going to be a Fox Movie before the Disney acquisition.
Is it now Marvel & Disney?
Will it be considered canonical?
Or is the first movie that’s canonical still Black Widow?

Because I want the first mutants in marvel / Disney to be
The original X Men...

I'm guessing that means no jammed in MCU connection.

I'd gamble a few cents and bet Eternals is where they try to explain how mutants come about. But, all of that stuff may have been already far along before being able to comfortably blend explanations.

So freaking weird but I couldn't get enough of it. Hard to imagine capturing that on screen.

The New Mutants director sets the record straight on reshoot rumblings
“Everybody said we did reshoots! We’ve never done reshoots."

By Nick Romano March 09, 2020 at 11:00 AM EDT

A lot has been said about The New Mutants, director Josh Boone’s X-Men spin-off, since it began filming in 2017. The movie, described as a “rubber reality” YA horror film, was once planned for a release in April 2018 back in the franchise’s heyday but was delayed multiple times when Disney purchased 21st Century Fox — and, therefore, the X-Men. Along the way, reports about the movie planning for reshoots became routine. Even veteran franchise producer Simon Kinberg, who’s now working on a sci-fi film for Netflix, mentioned them last year in an interview. But, for all this talk, Boone confirms they never happened.

“Everybody said we did reshoots! We’ve never done reshoots,” he tells EW over the phone in late February. “And I’ll tell you this: if there hadn’t been a merger, I’m sure we would’ve done reshoots the same way every movie does pickups. We didn’t even do that because by the time the merger was done and everything was settled, everybody’s older.”

By “everybody,” he means the cast. In August 2017, Game of Thrones alum Maisie Williams (Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane), The Witch’s Anya Taylor-Joy (Illyana Rasputin/Magik), Stranger Things’ Charlie Heaton (Sam Guthrie/Cannonball), Looking For Alaska‘s Henry Zaga (Roberto “Bobby” da Costa/Sunspot), and Another Life‘s Blu Hunt (Danielle Moonstar/Mirage) were still filming The New Mutants just outside of Boston. At the time, Boone described the concept to EW — about five teen mutants held at a secret facility against their will who face terrifying apparitions — as “Stephen King meets John Hughes.” Williams was 20 at the time. Now, she's 22.

By December 2017, just a couple months later, word broke that Disney would be purchasing Fox properties for more than $52 billion. And with Disney’s focus remaining on its ever-expanding Avengers franchise, The New Mutants was delayed. It was around this time that reports suggested the film would undergo reshoots to “make it scarier,” as Williams herself later said in a March 2019 interview with Rolling Stone magazine.

Speaking with EW now, Williams says, “The movie is exactly the movie we set out to make. I was nervous when they were talking about reshooting or re-editing that it was gonna be very different, but honestly, it’s exactly what we set out to do.” It was a sometimes aggravating situation with the only information she heard about the film coming from news headlines. “I would be in press for something else and then ask me about and the last thing I heard was, ‘Nothing until we know something.’”

“We had heard nothing because of the merger,” Boone adds. “It was radio silence for about a year where we had no new information at all.” During this period, the filmmaker finally found the time — and the green light — to make his long-awaited series adaptation of King’s The Stand for CBS All Access, news for which came out in January 2019. It wasn’t until after that Disney asked Boone t0 come back and finish editing The New Mutants, which he was more than happy to do. “When they called me right before I went to go make The Stand and said, ‘Would you come finish the movie?’ I said, ‘I would f—in’ love to come finish the movie!’”

When Boone walked away after those initial delays, the visual effects were still unfinished, which is why that original trailer, released in October 2017, didn't reveal anything from the second half of the movie. "In the editing, we were probably 75 percent done," Boone explains. "We came back and finished it up. It took a couple months, and it was nice to be able to come back. Knate , my co-writer, and I, we hadn’t seen it in a year. We did a bunch of things here and there that we hadn’t thought about or noticed a year before.”

That also included finishing up the visuals for Illyana’s sorceress abilities, notably her signature sword that materializes out of her arm, as well as Lockheed, the character’s fan-favorite purple dragon companion in the comic books. “You see a little bit of him there," Boone says of the latest trailer. "I wouldn't say too much more, but I was pleased with how we had him in the world and had him as part of Illyana’s story."

When the movie was finally finished, the filmmaker and his main cast — including Alice Braga as the mysterious head of the facility, Dr. Cecilia Reyes — reunited in New York City for the first official screening. These were the first people Boone wanted to watch the film.

“It’s very... thriller,” Williams describes. “I think the nature of a bunch of teenagers being trapped at a facility, all with individual powers which they don’t know how to use yet or even summon, that lends itself really well to suspense and scary cuts. It’s all done in a very honest way and it really does come from the characters and the situations that they’re in. It’s not a happy, upbeat superhero comedy film. It’s definitely very dark.”

The New Mutants will now open in theaters on April 3.

I don't think Disney is allowed to do that contractually. New Mutants is still a Fox movie that Disney has to honor the deal Fox made with HBO and future streaming services.

This really could’ve been chopped in half and blended into the last 2 X-Men movies. 2020 is so far from when the big reveal in this movie would’ve tied in perfectly with the nod/reference in one of those past movies.

its super scaled down and looks more like something that would be released on netflix. its also not really that good.

it just seems like something theyd wanna dump as fast as possible or just cut their losses and put it on streaming/vod.

It was largely a generic teen horror imo. Being attached to X-Men didn't really do much for it.

I thought they did a better job building characters and cultivating their relationships... but it doesn't really have much memorable action, never really reaches the point of investment. There's enough good to keep it from being completely awful, but nothing worth buying a movie ticket for.

In short, the same as the last several X-Men movies.

I was excited to see it just out of curiosity. I liked the 2nd and 3rd act WAY more than the first. The beginning of the movie didn't make me care about any of the characters but I got more invested as it went along.

One thing that bothered me: I was left wondering why Illyana was so mean to Dani. I thought they were going to use the lie detector scene to get behind the wall she puts up, but I guess not. Maybe some shit got cut because they barely made her redeemable by the end.

it wasn't horrible, but it certainly wasn't anything special. a notch below decent.

I'm trying not to be too harsh, since it seems teens and younger viewers were the target for this. but still, it could've at least been a GOOD teen horror flick.

as it stands, I like the overall concept and mood they were going for much more than the final product they delivered.
