This film cut out everything that made the manga and the anime so revered. Death Note works as a dark mystery, not a gory horror movie.
Also, the characters are not the same here. Light and L are both geniuses in the show and there's also a lot of time given to just going over the implications of the characters actions.
The only character that was adapted well (mostly) was Ryuk. That was another role tailored for Willem Dafoe.....but Ryuk is barely in the film.

Honestly didn't even mind this live action film. It in no way touches the source material, but givin the time restraints it wasn't what I'd call horrible when I compare it to that. I thought this was going to be a series, which it should have been.

Strip away the anime and supernatural stuff and Death Note is a 1950's detective cat and mouse where both the protagonist and antagonist switch depending on who's got the current upper hand, lol.: Sherlock Holmes where a large amount of it is taken from Professor Moriarty point of view.
With a long history of crimeprocedurals on both the big screen and the small screen you figure that would be the part they nail, but they never do.
