from HBO:

Directed by series co-creator Jonathan Nolan and created in collaboration with HBO Creative Services, Jax, and Kilter Films, it features new footage from Season 2 of the acclaimed series, in addition to original footage filmed exclusively for the spot. It also features a cover of Kanye West’s ‘Runaway’ by series composer Ramin Djawadi.

I guess it's all going to revolve about what happened during those two lost weeks, and how Bernard "killed" all the hosts.

I imagine they'll work out how Stubbs is back in the picture, why Charlotte isn't hanging around Bernard, and why there's now a giant fucking ocean in the middle of the park.

It also appears that Westworld is on Earth (as opposed to outer space) if the Navy has to arrive there by sea. And it also appears that Ford is really dead, rather than Delores shooting a host version of him.

I doubt I'll make it four episodes in. Shit should have only been one season now their just making shit up and treating the audience like they are stupid. Probably some gotchas planned throughout the season to string folk along but fundamentally just making shit up.

Maybe all this shit was in the movie. Ionno. But season one was already meandering by the time it got lit at the end. Now the lit part is over and they basically went back to meandering. Then they stole from the Lost playbook and slide a bunch of new mysteries and timeliness in to try to hook ya. I'm not buying it.

Probably more important though I stopped giving a fuck about the characters. I don't care about Dolores'end game if she has one (who knows!). Hale casually walking away to change clothes so Bernard can put more jungle juice in his brain just in time, get the fuck out of here. Thandie's character on some I don't give a fuck that my daughter is a robot reprogrammed to not even know me we gonna take ten episodes to find her... Whatever. Black hat like ooh I can get killed now. Foh.

Just not buying it. If they let it end with season 1 it would have lived on to be a solid b+. Now it'll be ho hum for a season, then folk will swear by season 3. But by season 4 the threadsll start showing blatantly. And whatever resolution is arrived at will be horribly unsatisfactory for the time invested.

I am here with you so far. My reason is so far, there is no form of resistance for the main robot characters at this point, so there's almost no point in watching things unfold. I have to think the show will introduce some element that will pose as some resistance to the robot cause, because if there isn't any, I don't see how there could be any element of drama to the show.

insofar as the lack of drama for the hosts.

The tension for the hosts in the first season was never really about "death" since it was well established that wasn't an issue. It was their burgeoning sentience, in whatever forms it took. So bullets and dying don't matter, it's more how they'd act (and react) in these supposed increasingly novel situations.

That said, I've only seen the first eps last night and I was kinda bored. I'll stick it out for a bit since the wife digs the worldbuilding but yall are right... there's no sense of danger and if we've already answered the question of "can a robot achieve sentience" in the first season.... then what are we watching?

One thing I find interesting is the different ideals between Maeve and Dolores in achieving the same goals.

Maeve wants the hosts to have free will to make their own decisions about their lives. (whatever they might be)

Dolores is using brute force. She doesn't care about using/playing other hosts as long as she gets what she wants in the end. (not everyone is going to make it)

Teddy is caught in the middle.

sensational pilot that led to nothing very slowly, with no real endgame in sight.

in a season or two there will just be fanatics left, and after the resolution fails them everyone will hate it until some dumb essay reveals the redundancy of Westworld was actually super meta, or bullshit to that effect.

Even in the episode for this recent season finale, this is what the show runners were pulling. I'm 50/50 on if I want to pull the plug on this show at this point. The sci-fi elements of this show are so murky and unclear, which shouldn't be the case since the show is well past the point of having to clarify and explain things.

it is a pure hate watch for me. i rewatched season 1 before the s2 premier, and was actually PUMPED. i enjoyed the show a LOT more the second time around.

i havent even watched last nights yet, i have GOT to rewatch last weeks to even pretend to know what the fuck they're doing.

so that could be why I had some interest with the stuff pertaining to Will's father-in-law last night, but I can see the remainder of the season returning to pure frustration because I don't see myself having true interest for the other characters. And that's even counting the little plot twists that came and the very end of last night's episode.

I do wonder if the ratings for this are waning with each episode because I have to imagine this show costs a pretty penny to make and I don't see HBO being too patient with shelling out top dollar for this meandering show.

https://www.wired.com/story/westworld-turning-into-lost/amp

The episode opens with a montage: James Delos (Peter Mullan) is in a finely appointed modernist apartment. He walks through what appears to be his morning routine: drinking water, smoking a cigarette, getting in a few minutes on a stationary bike. All the while, he’s listening to the Rolling Stones’ “Play with Fire.” If the scene felt familiar, here's why: It's just about exactly how Lost introduced Desmond at the beginning of Season 2. (Yes, Season 2! The same season in which Westworld currently finds itself.) In that montage, Desmond made a smoothie, typed a series of numbers into a computer and pushed “the button,” and got in a few minutes on a stationary bike—all while listening to another 1960s hit: Cass Elliot's "Make Your Own Kind of Music."

It's almost as if the show runners were trolling since that morning routine sequence was done two or three times if memory serves me right; it even high-lighted the music being played by displaying colored vinyl.

Speaking of music, it anyone else disappointed the show isn't doing piano covers of modern songs anymore?

As for that little nugget at the end I felt like that was a damn tease after sitting through a couple of episodes of nothing happening.

I say I'm might be done but my stubborn ass will watch this season play out on DVR and make my decision if I want jump back on if and when they get a season 3.

Hell, I just went back to playing Destiny 2 and I'm a Knick fan so that says I know and probably love pain and/or optimistic things will turn around with enough time.

Maeve is a fully functioning version of Professor X right now, was fully aware of her abilities in the middle of the episode, yet didn't use them before that final scene last night. I literally threw my hands up when she went amok with her abilities in that final scene. Unless the end of this second season provides reasonable roadblocks to hinder what these robots want to achieve, I don't see the point in watching this show much longer.

I do wonder if the ratings for this season are much lower than the first season.

In response to Reply # 52

Delos wanted to record data on the people that came to the park and replace them with Hosts like them. On the secondary note, Delos was trying to crack the code to move the human conciseness into the body of a Host in order to gain immortality. Which I assume Delos could then sell to the rich looking to live forever, all that data seemed to be in the dad's brain.

Dolores has the info now and is headed towards the Valley Beyond with it (past) and Hale has discovered that Bernard is a host and is headed towards the Valley Beyond (present) for what I assume is to get said data.

Man in Black got filled full of rounds in a shootout with Maeve, who used her powers to convince his posse to kill him with the exception of Lawerence who's somewhat self-aware, though she convinces him to remember all the bad shit MIB/William did in the past to him. He get's bodied by Delos security who rescued the narrator guy.

I think it's been twice now that Maeve hesitated in using her powers over the over robots which led to her downfall. Also, one of the soldiers that got seduced in the most recent episode in the cradle made absolutely no sense to me given the madness that was happening around him.

It's borderline insulting how inconsistent the characters are behaving at this point. I think I might tap out after this season ends.

It also feels we are getting progress story wise and next weeks we get to see what type of bastard William is outside of WestWorld.

why that lead female tech staff person decided on rushing the repairs on him. It would have made a but more sense if that came from Ford to me, but since she is pretty much faceless, I didn't get her motivations in that scene.

In response to Reply # 0

Still doesn't portend too well for the series though since both solid episodes diverted away from the sci-fi elements of the show and dealt with one-on-one character studies for the most part. I'm still not completely convinced this show will handle the complex sci-fi storylines all that well going forward, but I suppose I could be wrong.

I almost felt sorry for James Madsen and Mary Elizabeth Winstead because while both did stellar work with that last scene together, the moment itself felt tacked on since the A-story pertaining to Ed Burns probably should have been the focus for the entire episode. Teddy offing himself didn't have the gravity it should have, at least in my opinion.

I fell asleep during the (first?) Shogun World episode and never bothered to return, despite having loved S1.

If anyone who loved S1 but felt underwhelmed (or straight up let down) by the way S2 started can recommend sticking with it through the end (or wherever it is currently), I am SLIGHTLY curious (but skeptical) to revisit...

that the next upcoming third season will start off where the current BBC/AMC show Humans started off from the start. Is that about accurate?

Also, can someone explain to me how Ed Harris' character was able to dig into his forearm without killing himself? And this is after he was shot up about two or three times before he dug into his forearm and after he lost blood from having a finger or two blown off.

he's a host. it's the same way Dolores was able to get shot and keep standing.

did you see the end credit scene? it confirms he is a host at some point in the show but we don't know when that happened. my guess is he has been one all of season 2 or maybe the whole run of the show when we see him as Black Hat.

well after I made my initial post from a review on avclub.com. I never heard of HBO drama shows doing post-credit scenes, so I promptly shut HBO off when I saw the credits roll right after Jeffrey Wright walked out of frame in that last shot. Ed Harris being a host leads to more questions of course, but I'm still on the fence if I want to see the third season or not to see if those questions are answered.

It almost feels as if the show runners introduced new story elements at whim to keep people constantly on edge, which feels pretty manipulative to me. I'm almost on the verge of pull the plug on this show.

it explains a few other random things about him that we saw...plus it never specifies when he became a host so I think there's a possibility that some other instances we saw of him were when he was already a host.

When he was digging in his forearm he never finished...Dolores interrupted him. He also had instances of memory lapse and a few lines of dialogue that eluded to this "i'm not of this world...". Makes no sense to assume he only became a host at the very end of what we saw.

If Ed Harris' character was a host in the 'present' and not only well into the future, that would mean he was a host when he was around Maeve around three or so episodes ago, right? If that's the case, shouldn't she have been able to sense that he was a host since they were around each other for an extended amount of time? She even used her Professor X powers to get 'other' hosts to shoot him while he threatened her; why couldn't she have sensed that he was of her kind?
