Hawkins, Jenkins, and Shannon are quite a trio. Lovely to look at, and that dance number was outstanding. It didn't really grab me emotionally the way some of the other great movies this year have, but it was still marvelously constructed.

I saw this Friday before watching The Last Jedi a second time.
Damn what a beautiful film.
I didn't like Pacific Rim, and was underwhelmed by Crimson Peak.
But he really came with it this time.
The only reason I might put Pan's Labyrinth ahead of this is because the story for The Shape of Water is pretty straightforward, you kind of know where it's going. It doesn't really throw many or any curveballs--whereas from start to finish I had NO IDEA where Pan's Labyrinth was going.
But still. The lead was so great. Richard Jenkins was great. Octavia Spencer was great. Michael Shannon was gave his usual creepy as performance. And some of the shots were just absolutely beautiful.

I loved it. admittedly i'm a big GDT fan, and his aesthetic & 'textures' of his films seem to ALWAYS align with my preferences, and this one is no different.
its a simple little film really, which i tend to appreciate. Loved the performance by the female lead, she was absolutely fantastic. (and Doug Jones is my boy, as the creature of course . like i said, its a simple little story at its core, but it does manage to linger afterwards, like most GDT movies do...its got that 'sneaky good' quality about it....
best way i could describe it is that its a real 'charmer'...
