man i waited over a week to watch it just so i didnt get stuck waiting for more (apparently the rest of the season properly starts in a couple months?). SO fucking good.
awesome callbacks to prev eps, spesh with the ending of this ep mirroring the ending of the pilot (instead of 100 years he says "97 more years", seeing as they're now in season 3 lol).
a lot of theories out there already about everything.
Rick mentioning he used to wear blue pants being one of the big ones (way more talked about than Phoenix Person). basically leading into a "Morty becomes Rick" theory.
shit definitely felt darker. i hope they actually do ramp up the darkness & take it to some intense non-comedic places.
man i missed this shit.

last night. I only knew as result of seeing a review for the second episode on avclub.com last night. It appears things will be dark this season, or perhaps it wasn't appropriate to have watched the show at 6 in the morning when I did today. Pretty clever how the show is deal with the family drama in the mist of all the sci-fi madness that is this show.

and rewatched it yesterday in anticipation of the true premiere (haven't seen the second episode yet).

Holy. Shit. I fucking love this show so much... it's quickly entering my pantheon of favorite shows ever. Such a dense first episode that played so loosely with multi-dimensional time travel (since they're going even deeper into the C-137 Rick thing), and so much happened:

- C-137 Rick is the most "Rick" of them all (who now occupies the body of a different Rick since C-137 Rick's body no longer has a unibrow)
- C-137 Morty is jaded as fuck
- ????? Summer is hanging out with C-137 Morty (is this right?!?!)
- Jerry is going to get written out somehow (kicking and screaming I'm sure)
- Beth (I'm convinced) has been sorta brainwashed by Rick somehow to fawn over Rick even more
- fucking PHOENIX PERSON in straight Terminator mode

This is one of the very, very few shows that really rewards multiple viewings

First episode was absolutely bonkers, second episode did a great juxtaposition of dealing with the fallouts of divorce, and who thought Picklerick would end up being one of the most action packed episodes so far?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKtcskwYoEM.

basically Rick is the most self aware person in the cosmos, to the point where he KNOWS he's a cartoon character playing a role. which may contribute to why he's so depressed on the inside. and explain the multiple 4th wall breaks.

not to say the Morty is Rick theory ain't got legs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xVBolEhh8k.

is written much better this season so far, I hope Jerry won't totally get kicked to the curb if only because I am a Chris Parnell fan. I have to think an episode will get dedicated mainly to him somewhere down the road this season.

Beth makes a good point by saying Rick can handle anything in his path, including being a pickle with no access to the anti-pickle serum. she was totally right, and reminded me that Rick is still not be fucked with, in any form.
the ongoing family drama has been on point too. feels like if the show ever conceded to having a warm gooey center, it would be Rick's struggle to meaningfully connect with his family.

... the continuity is insanely consistent. Dan Harmon feels so at home with an animated series like this when he gets to explore his insane concepts without having to deal with the whims of actors and shooting schedules.

If Rick & Morty is your first exposure to Dan Harmon's style of writing, this is a fantastic longform article from 2011 that talks about his time on Community:

https://www.wired.com/2011/09/mf_harmon/

Quick blurb, but well worth the read:

He wanted to codify the storytelling process—to find the hidden structure powering the movies and TV shows, even songs, he’d been absorbing since he was a kid. “I was thinking, there must be some symmetry to this,” he says of how stories are told. “Some simplicity.” So he watched a lot of Die Hard, boiled down a lot of Joseph Campbell, and came up with the circle, an algorithm that distills a narrative into eight steps:

https://www.wired.com/magazine/wp-content/images/19-10/mf_harmon1_t.jpg

1. A character is in a zone of comfort
2. But they want something
3. They enter an unfamiliar situation
4. Adapt to it
5. Get what they wanted
6. Pay a heavy price for it
7. Then return to their familiar situation
8. Having changed

Harmon calls his circles embryos—they contain all the elements needed for a satisfying story—and he uses them to map out nearly every turn on Community, from throwaway gags to entire seasons. If a plot doesn’t follow these steps, the embryo is invalid, and he starts over. To this day, Harmon still studies each film and TV show he watches, searching for his algorithm underneath, checking to see if the theory is airtight. “I can’t not see that circle,” he says. “It’s tattooed on my brain.”

Shit... this makes me want to rewatch Community...

I;ve been looking to get a Rick and Morty poster since Season 1 and could never find anything that was a Comic-Con overpriced "exclusive" or a bootleg.

Well - Hot Topic has posters- and a shit load of other stuff like hats, dolls, socks, fingerless gloves , etc: http://www.hottopic.com/pop-culture/shop-by-license/rick-and-morty/

So does Spencer's Gift - there's a Rick and Morty Monopoly game there.

Now I gotta find my old Family Guy season 1 poster and rip out of the frame and put Rick and Morty in there.

It would be cool to see video of Justin Roiland in the voice over booth for this episode since he was pretty much 100% for the sound for this episode; I forgot to check the ending credits to see if anyone else did voice over work for this episode (for instance, that voice over for the Wafer Bar commercials).

That theme song is so haunting because of when you first meet Evil Morty. I rewatched (and rewatched) the other seasons prior to this one and in a show filled with memorable moments, that Morty stepping on his eye patch is definitely a highlight.

Luckily I forgot about evil morty so that callback took me totally by surprise.

On a technical storytelling level I don't think there's anything fucking with it on television today; from the fact you basically had one voice actor on the show, to the general worldbuilding and callbacks, to the themes of corruption...its crazy the storytelling tightropes Harmon and team pull off.

This week's episode was just fucking masterful.

You know that you are going to get layers with Rick and Morty...that there will be callbacks...but the way they just played up on so much going on socially, the way you FELT the shit that the Ricks and the Mortys were going thru....just sheer fucking genius.

straight off, the theme music of the film reminded me totally of Rick & Morty's "ooohwweeeeoohhh" theme music.
but mostly it was the concept of the whole film overall. the whole thing played like a live action Interdimensional Cable episode. would like to think this flick served as inspiration.
here's one of the scenes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GAOBw5AR_1c.
