And the cast is filled with musical talent so it kind of makes sense on that front. And it fits the tone. A musical episode of Arrow, on the other hand...

I Love Lucy did it in the 50's.

They do it because they've broken stories on dozens if not scores if not hundreds of shows and it's a format they can add it

Plus some times the actors are really good singers/dancers and like to do it.

I haven't seen yet but kinda get it, both stars were on Glee, some of the other actors have theater backgrounds. Still, I wasn't really looking forward to it as said above, kind of rips the premise from Buffy and doubt can be nearly as well done as that was.

Buffy is still the GOAT on that front.

it was just one number but still, that was the awkwardest moment in the entire series and completely unnecessary (even though in this case it fit the character and tied back to earlier eps).
