When I first heard about it I was like,

1)yay. just what we need. another comic book tv show.

2)Legion? LOLZ. He's was always more of a plot point than an actual character in the comics because his powers are so absurd; he's a walking deus ex machina of the marvel comics world.

However with Noah's unparalleled work in TV Fargo and the fact this seems to be more concerned with schizophrenia than dudes in tights makes me think they pulled it off. The trailers have been nuts and the reviews are already positive from places that don't have traditionally have a hard on for comic adaptations, im all in.

Legion was a character that gave the X franchise and marvel one of it's biggest events in the mid 90's, other than that he was never fully explored enough. But, this might change that and I'd like to see how they display the use of all of his powers.

If it wasn't for Noah I'd be out and I'm still on the fence. Aubrey Plaza being on the show doesn't help much either. I can only hope they give her a good character that forces her to do something other than her usual act.

First quarter was a straight Wes Anderson movie, and later parts were straight out of 'Beyond the Black Rainbow'. I liked it so much I was a bit irked when the real world seemingly stepped in at the end with the final scene...still not convinced the other characters aren't just coping mechanisms for what's going on in his head/what he can do if pushed.

Great pilot.

Loved the overall surreal feeling and disjointed storytelling, very, very different feel for X-Men related media.

I don't know the character a ton, but Dan Stevens is doing a fantastic job at playing the character I do know about. The potential for what Legion can do as a mutant is incredible.

Was the yellow-eyed demon... Mojo? Looked like Mojo to me, and some people think that it was. I don't think Legion and Mojo ever interacted, but why not include him? Cool nod to the comics if it is in fact him.

I'm guessing it's the Shadow King. It looked a lot like Amahl Farouk, who becomes the Shadow King. There was a connection between the two characters in the comics.

In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if this whole season all going on in Legion's mind in some sort of battle with him.

Don't know if it's The Shadow King or Mojo yet - either way the yellow eyed devil is creepy

I liked the guesswork with Westworld but this feels more like Game of Thrones where there's backstory and info I might not have that people could add and spoil some stuff.

None of his comic storylines could pop in since he doesn't really have his own storylines...they all involve 20 other characters and 40 plus years of comic book continuity.

That what makes this an interesting project choice; even beyond the schizophrenia issue Legion was never a really a character..just a plot device to have the Xmen go back in time, go into alternate dimensions, as a temporary baddie because someone tricked him into using his powers, etc

Basically he shows up in page 1 of a comic, something fucked up involved with him happens by page 3, and its multiple comic book issues of superheros trying to fix shit with him playing third fiddle (if they even bother to reference him again).

That said OTHER characters/adversaries that might pop in with more straight forward ready for tv storylines that might get ruined if they are trying to keep them mysterious.

>RE: New favorite show on TV.>

and yeah, i know i mentioned that the lead guy's acting was great, but i agree, the actress playing his girlfriend is nailing it too. i like how the show lets the characters take their time and 'breath' with the scenes....they pause and mumble & ramble sometimes etc, ...you know like real people do in real life? that kind of relaxed naturalness in the dialogue can do WONDERs for pulling me in and hooking me into characters.

(theres nothing WORSE than what typically passes as 'dialogue' in some superhero shows ---they often end up sounding like everyone talks only in 'speeches' ...uggh....)

but nah, this one is hitting all the right notes for me so far...

and yo, the 'dude**' that we keep seeing 'glimpses; of? sheeeeet....SO well done....executed perfectly....creepy as eff.

(**i'm pretty sure we know who it is but I'm not gonna say it to avoid spoilery stuff)

he doesn't operate like that. Mojo just kind of just abducts people. i don't recall him messing with anyone's mind like that. also Mojo doesn't really have much of a body and uses technology to move around. this dude seems more like Shadow King. there are some people on Reddit saying it could also be this character named Fiend that i'm not familiar with.

I knew it was going to be dope as soon as it was announced.

The acting, pacing, cinematography, music, everything is on point. Low key I got a crush on ol boy's girlfriend.

They even got the therapist bruh from the criminally underrated Rectify...playing a therapist lol. Though I guess he was more of a social worker in Rectify.

Dan Stevens and Rachel Keller have GREAT chemistry and know how to play off each other well.

And fuck at that cliffhanger. He's trapped in his own mind.

Guys I have no idea where this is going and that's a good thing. It's nice to be surprised for once.

The story and visuals on this show (other than the B movie action scene from the first episode) are great. Enjoying the slow burn so far.

I had rewatched the first episode a couple of times because I was trying to get my wife to watch it and saw a couple of new things in the background of shots (basement scene - Lenny in the mirror)

yeah, all of that ^!

the chemistry between the two leads is absolutely GREAT...it feels extremely natural and genuine

LOVE the storytelling here. love how bits and pieces seem to be unfolding.... to what end...i don't know, and i love the fact that i don't know....

the directorial choices are creative. The imagery is amazing (loving the spots of creepiness!)

these shows are totally rewatchable too. i've watched the first ep almost 3 full times already and discovered interesting things that i missed the first go round, and each watch it was still extremely satisfying....

yep, our favorite show on the air at the moment!

They never explicitly say anything. But during Kerrie's explanation, my wife said she'd noticed something before, but didn't mention it because it seemed to weird.

I do remember in like Episode 2, when David is in the MRI machine, Cary asks Kerrie to get him something for him, and David responds, "Wait, aren't you Cary?"

The rest of the internet is coming around to the entity being the Shadow King/Farouk.

Cary/Kerrie is still interesting.

I'm getting an Emma White vibe from the main lady, but Emma would probably use her power to look young forever.

Fake Rogue's first orgasm story was fuuuuuucked up.

As opposed to bad CGI, it was a very effective tell on what kind of violence he could unleash at will.

Its also a flashback to episode 1 during that last escape...right in the corner of the frame you saw 'harmless' David that everyone was protecting one arm choke one of the security dudes with that same evil glint in his eye and when the scene moved you saw the guards crumpled body...

...this show is RIGHT up my ally in every way...

the performances ALL the way around are so good...nuanced, subtle, natural...

the characters themselves are ALL interesting to me...i care and want to learn more about each end every one of them...

the show is bold and fearless and supremely creative in how it choses to tell the story...

i also think its use of music as an integral part of the storytelling is really cool and evocative..

(semi spoiler...) ...its funny, at the beginning of the ep 5 show i was gushing to my wife about all of the above, and i said to her something like 'you know what i love about this show? its not afraid of silence...its not afraid of quiet moments where no words are spoken. its SO well put together and so well thought out that it can tell some elements of its story just as effectively IN BETWEEN the words.Thats gutsy, and shows the skill of the directorial/creator...'

or something along those lines...and then later in the show, what do they do? An extremely long silent sequence that i thought was SUPER effective, My wife even asked me if i had seen the episode before since i had mentioned the silent thing at the beginning of the ep. i hadn't, but i'll be damned if this show didn't ACT like it was reading my mind listening to our convo, and chose to express it overtly as if on que...

anyways...its my favorite show on tv at the moment...

Like, I get it, but I didn't a whole hour of it. It could have been served for 15 minutes in the sanitarium, maybe Lenny dancing throughout his memories, and the final Lenny and Legion scene. Everything else was redundant.

It must feel like complete and absolute torture to watch this normally on FX with week to week breaks and with the longer commercial breaks. I'm going to wait until this airs completely so I can binge watch this to completion when all the episodes air.

I wonder how long it takes to fully film and edit each episode since it appears each episode is done with so much meticulous care and attention to detail. The clothes especially stand out in the first four episodes I just watched. The fact this Noah dude was able to do this show along with Fargo blows my mind.

I read a portion of an interview with Noah Hawley where he said he purposefully created a hypnotic experience with Legion and he feels the commercial breaks interferes with that. I was thinking about that as minimal commercial Hulu breaks broke up that experience much more more less than the longer commercial breaks that come with the show as it airs live on FX.

I can only imagine how much better the show would be if Hawley could get HBO, Starz, or another premium cable channel to air Legion.

GREAT TV here.

there is nothing...absolutely NOTHING i would change about this show. every element of it on every level is supremely satisfying to me.

writing
acting
pacing
presentation...visuals, audio
EVERYthing

it is SO creative in its storytelling, it shows that you DON'T have to have a TON of super expensive special effects to VERY SATISFYINGLY express super POWERS. you can tell that the creators on THIS show thought a lot...a LOT about how BEST to create and express awe, excitement, power, fear etc...the creative combination of practical, digital, old school & new school tools to tell this story is so refreshing and thrilling to me...

as we were midway through this episode i snapped my fingers as i realized something...my wife hit pause and said 'what?'...i was like, "this show is SO good SO creative, it reminds me of what a TV show would be if one of my favorite comic artists Bill Sienkiewicz was a TV creator." (my wife didn't read comics so she didn't know who Bill Sienkiewicz was, so i explained how ahead of his time, unpredictable and super creative Bills art has always been...and how this TV show gives me that same feeling. told her id dig up some of my Sienkiewicz comics and show her over the weekend...

i'll be damned if at the end of the Episode i decide to read the credits and notice that the TV series is based/inspired by a Bill Sienkiewicz & Chris Claremont...hah, who knew?

have you listened to

And getting everyone out of the predicament. Managed to be completely batshit, yet simultaneously coherent.

Oh, by the way, I called it on The Shadow King back in post #13 (and I figured I was right when I indeed heard that the dog with named "King").

Also figured Hamish/The Interrogator survived ep. 1 too.

In response to Reply # 74

that Pokeball outta nowhere had me cracking up! ( i assumed that was SUPPOSED to be kinda funny/humorous.)

but yeah....great finale...got me pumped for season 2.

helluva job they've done with this one. loving and want to spend time with each and every every single character. The good guys and the bad guys.

Ice Cube Groovy Hubby is my boy!! He's hilarious! i love that actors work (he was in "What We Do In the Shadows", another favorite of mine, and he was killing it in that movie too...

Marvel take note...right now Fox is beating ya at your own game...

Deadpool
Logan
Legion

all 3 are very refreshing and creative approaches...letting talented creators take some REAL chances, and allowing them to focus MOSTLY on good story-telling can pay off in the long run...Legion MAY end up being my favorite comic thing since the precedent setting classic Iron Man 1. Its DEFINITELY the most creatively executed, well casted & acted comic 'adaption' i can recall...though "Preacher" is another one that i love...

FX, bring on season 2! (but take as long as you want...as long as it takes to keep the quality up.!

really clueless as to why that was included, it wasn't even performed with any real passion from either actor in the scene.

Going the "Syd must sacrifice herself to save David" route was pretty trite. Then having the Shadow King hop into Oliver's body ***just*** after he remember his wife was even more trite. And the Pokeball shit was just fucking dumb.

Overall, I really enjoyed the first season, but I really wish they'd done a better job at sticking the landing

Syd - she can temporarily swap her consciousness with someone else by touching them. it also appears that when she switches back, her and the person she touches also switch physical locations (it only happened that once with David that i can remember so i don't totally get that one)

Ptonomy - he can inhabit and read other people's memories. he also has a photographic memory.

Oliver - appears to be a pretty powerful telepath. he's been in the astral plane for 20 years which seems like that would kill a normal person. i guess Melanie freezing him helped keep him going. he's got a good amount of control on the astral plane since he can create things (the ice cube he lives in, the glasses, the "shield" he created to protect David and Syd), though it seems he was losing his mind a bit from being in there so long.

dude who's name i can't remember who had some kind of telekinesis where he could fling things away (seemingly into oblivion).

The Eye - (i don't remember if he had a name) i really don't understand what his deal was or if he had any real power or not.

Cary/Kerry - probably the most interesting one. they appear to be two separate people inhabiting Cary's body simultaneously. she doesn't age when they merge. when they split, they can feel each other's pain. they also seem to be able to heal by merging.

David - an omega level mutant that can pretty much do anything it seems. control matter on a molecular level, warp reality, teleport, read minds, etc, etc. in the comics he has multiple personalities that each have a power, but they didn't really get into that in the show. it appears this is all him.

>Syd
She can body swap ala Freaky Friday. You're right though - we see swapping places back physically twice - once with David and once with Walter.

I looked it up - named after Syd Barrett.

>Oliver
He has the same powers as David - telepathy and telekinesis, he's just much weaker than David.

>dude who's name i can't remember who had some kind of
>telekinesis where he could fling things away (seemingly into
>oblivion).

Rudy. I was hoping someone would be tossed and in a Cosby voice would say "Ruuudddyyyy!"

>The Eye
Walter.

He can shape shift and sound like other people - either mentally fooling people around him or physically doing it.

He also could see the projections of David and Syd - not sure how.

He worked with Oliver and Melanie but left many years ago aparent seeking more power.

Also late puberty.

Melonike a.k.a. Charlene on Designing Women
I don't think she has powers - but she is used to talking with people who have telepathy - because she is married to Oliver.

In response to Reply # 0

surprisingly good CG for a TV show, but they had Marvel money to spend I suppose.

great cast all around, I wish we got a little more Hamish and his boyfriend (I really dig Hamish and loved the boyfriend's actor in Fargo season 2) but otherwise I felt like we got just enough out of every character. maybe more Jemaine Clement also.

that said, watching it all in one go this show wasn't always the tightest. especially when it came to the end credits stingers, it almost always felt like they just ran out of time, not that the episode was over. every ending was like a static shock.

but I also felt character motivations would shift for the sake of the plot as often as for character, a feeling I've never really got from the Fargo seasons or Jessica Jones to name another Marvel television property.

actually, I got a lot of Jones vibes from this in general with the mind control and all powerful implications and all that. in that sense I enjoyed that they humanized that conflict as much as they did and I sort of wish Hawley had found a way to avoid the Dragon Ball Z collision at the end in favor of something more...psychological, I guess? I just listened to a podcast where he discussed his disappointment with most super hero stories reducing themselves down to who's stronger and physical conflict, but that's exactly what his show did in the end.

I was also reminded of Stranger Things in the sense that the mystery was arguably more entertaining than the payoff; this interview also mentioned how Hawley never really saw this is a mystery box sort of show, and that he very deliberately made the style of the show more informational and direct, less manic and visually unsettling as David gained more and more understanding of the situation. But I felt like the show lost a little something when it became more about defeating the Shadow King than learning about it, and I think it also lost a little something as Stevens became a less unhinged presence on the screen.

obviously I watched the whole thing in a single morning so these are in some ways nitpicks on what was a wonderful 8 hours of television, but taken as a whole I think the first 4, 5 hours were easily more intriguing than the last two.

In response to Reply # 80

they break the episodes up in weird ways, maybe more like how it was on TV or maybe less, where basically the stingers before the credits were often all that you saw after the final commercial break. I still don't think it does transitions to credits very effectively compared to most 'prestige' TV but it's a lot less abrupt on the Hulu broadcasts of the shows. Makes me wish I'd realized they had Legion on Hulu from the beginning rather than trying to watch it on the FX app.
