The first one was good. Crazy effects and Caesar's story was really strong. I had an issue with the human characters...they all seemed too simple and just kinda did things to move the plot along.

When the second came out at first it didn't make sense to me that James Franco wasn't in it. Then Rupert Wyatt left from being director, and I just thought "eh". Didn't even see it in the theater. But it was really, really good. Did a good job of showing that there wasn't a clear right and wrong, and there were characters to blame on both sides of the conflict. The human characters were still pretty simple, BUT they took up a smaller portion of the plot. So I didn't miss Franco.

Now seeing this trailer, I'm getting the point that this entire series is really all about Caesar, and how he led the apes to taking over the world. Of course that's kinda obvious ans we knew that from the beginning, but it's making me rethink the first movie. I think they wanted to focus more on the humans at that point because that side is more relatable to us, but the story was still about Caesar. So it's been more of a gradual shift through the three film to focus more on the apes. I guess the point is to make it feel more like this could happen to us.

Don't know why but I can't stand snow settings in anything. Movies, video games, you name it. Snow is such an uninteresting backdrop despite making for a formidable antagonist (depending on the story).

There have been a few exceptions, like The Grey, or Alive, but something about snow just puts me to sleep in entertainment mediums.

I can say this is the best of all three. The rare summer blockbuster where the drama overshadows the action (which is dope as fuck). The close ups in this film are something you don't see in blockbuster filmmaking.

I'm so excited for The Batman now.

I really liked the first (though I thought the evil scientist angle it came around to was a little flimsy) and wasn't a big fan of the second. Re-reading the summary on Wiki it sounds like an incredible movie but something about it just didn't jive with me in the theater.

They're prequelish, laden with references to the original series, but that it's more of a reboot than anything else.

The Burton one is a separate entity that isn't connected whatsoever.

if i say much more i'll be spoiling sheet.

Serkis needs to win something for this, as well as the special effects folk responsible for presenting his performance as an ape. damn. And the director Matt Reeves too...

excellent job all the way around....

instead of Tavarav or whatever his name is. His last movie got ravaged and Jurassic World could have been soooo much better.

...i haven't seen his TV stuff, but I've seen all of his big screen Movies, and at this point his track record there for me is "LOVED it" "LOVED it" "LOVED it" "LOVED it."

i mean, even the one that i THOUGHt i WOULDNT love*, just because i loved the original foreign language version** SO much (Let Me In*/Let the Right One In**) ...even that remake i came out loving just as much in its OWN right.

so yeah...Reeves is killin' it on the big screen for me...so far, his flicks have just the right balance of various ingredients and are cooked pretty much to perfection for my own personal tastes.

2) deray mckesson's a fucking tool.

3) tariq nasheed too.

woody brought the drama in this one... a really good antagonist as "colonel" (*cough* kurtz). kinda moved into anti-hero territory after the long, dialogued scene with caesar.

they hit shots and themes from like a dozen different heston joints too without even trying.

i love how caesar is central to the narrative, but shit captures the chaos of pitched battles and nature too.

i love how we're at a point where we're sharing the perspective of caesar's tribe and really have no idea what's going on in the world outside of norcal.

i love the orangutans. because they anthropomorphize the chimps so much i bet that will look cheesy in 20 years, but it's hard to see any flaw at all in maurice.

i'm a big fan of the original films, especially the time loop back to the origins....even if they were bad movies. but it never really felt like a convincing beginning to me.

they even included aspects of the mythos that didn't need to be explained and weren't explained well the first time around, but still worked as integral to the story.

hard to see them not blowing it if they try to expand from here.

I was all in my feelings for this joint. Probably my favorite out of the three films just because of how much I felt for the Apes. Well paced and everything on first viewing seemed to make sense. I forgot about the vest foolishness until I got back here. That character in the film was great. Ya man was great comic relief and a dope addition overall to the team. Bad Ape.

In general I love the Planet of the Apes universe. I used to watch the tv show as a kid and loved the OG movies (even the bad ones). I'm very happy with this new trilogy and I'm thankful that it was done.

the beginning and ending sequences are magnificent. for a series that has quite a few incredible set-pieces (Golden Gate Bridge battle, hunting scene in Dawn, Koba attack on San Francisco, Caesar-Koba battle on the tower), for me the opener to War is the best of them all now.

the middle of the film has a Jar Jar Binks problem and more shoehorned human relationships. lots of scenes of characters just staring into each other's eyes with musical cues.

that said, the writers for this reboot have always had novel ideas to compensate for some poor plot devices: this time I was really impressed by the Simian Virus mutation and seeing the ape "donkeys" work with the humans.

all in all this series created an amazing world, with present-day and historical themes, featuring one of the best movie characters of his time.

I just saw "War" last night, so I'm gonna see it again to check for deets and easter eggs. But here's a few things I've been wondering.

-They never showed the faces of the soldiers that invaded The Colonel's base at the end. I read somewhere that that means they might not be human. I think that's ridiculous, because they came to relieve him of command ( thus following military protocol), but it's worth discussing

-Also, do you think the Alpha/Omega squad survivors ( if there are any ) will become that weird group of mutants who lived underground in ( I wanna say "Beneath...")?

-From the original series, we know that eventually the Apes migrated all over the US ( if not the whole of North America), so what happened in Europe, Asia, etc? ( We know from "Rise" that the Simian Flu went worldwide and killed or infected the humans, but did apes in those parts of the world come to power too? I always wondered that.)

-Why was Bad Ape all skinny, hairless and funny lookin'? Was he supposed to be an elderly chimp? Or was it from years of living in solitude and not eating, etc?

-There was an Icarus easter egg in "Rise", and we know that Taylor and crew crash in the area near where the ape population has settled. But we also know that the apes have set up a society complete with books, architecture, etc. I'd like an explanation of when the apes started their own written history ( we know they could write, and we know Caesar could read). Though I suppose 'they kept evolving' would be an easy answer.

Yeah, they're human. They weren't apes, so I have no idea what they would be.

>-Also, do you think the Alpha/Omega squad survivors ( if there

>underground in ( I wanna say "Beneath...")?

Some of their descendants, probably. Cornelius has just been born, so we're probably decades away from the timeline of the first Apes movie (depending on how long an evolved ape's lifespan is.)

>-From the original series, we know that eventually the Apes

I assume it was similar. I took the apes migrating at the end of this to be their first journey towards eventually colonizing the east coast.

>-Why was Bad Ape all skinny, hairless and funny lookin'? Was
>he supposed to be an elderly chimp? Or was it from years of

I think it was a combination of the conditions he lived in at the zoo and the following years alone in a cave with no other apes.

They keep evolving, and I think it's implied that apes who were born after the simian flue hit are even more evolved than the apes of Caesar and Maurice's generation.

when they find Bad Ape, they wonder the exact same thing since he wasn't part of their group at any point.

i had a moment when i was thinking something similar right before the got to the wall, but then i remember dismissing when they got close enough from that group to notice caesar. i don't remember why.

>-Also, do you think the Alpha/Omega squad survivors ( if there
>are any ) will become that weird group of mutants who lived

i don't know if they'd play it that tight, especially because groups of humans just don't stick around/matter in this conception of the franchise other than their connections to caesar. plus it seemed like everything stockpiled was conventional. there are reactors and places like norad though right? might be some people there. the only thing that makes the connection at all is the alpha-omega, but that's terminology that a lot of crazy prophetic human leaders might use.

this is also where the original franchise got messy, so maybe they'd avoid that.

the big thing at play here is the nuclear aspect. large stretches of that earth were considered inhabitable in general in that timeline. it's hard to tell from this movie given its locations if there has been fallout to that extent. the COASTAL pack of snow was weird to me and doesn't match any place i know, but i've certainly seen deep snow at crater lake or the olympics or whistler. the other locations don't seem to give credence to nuclear winter.

>-Why was Bad Ape all skinny, hairless and funny lookin'? Was
>he supposed to be an elderly chimp? Or was it from years of

i assume it was about the conditions. especially considering how he gets his name. i've been around a lot of chimps in captivity, and you do have some that have lost or pulled out a lot of fur from stress. though chimps can get alopecia and lose hair with age like people.

especially if there was more evolutionary pressure and acceleration given the mental/communicative aspects of the simian flu. if it's changing in how it affects humans, it could be true for apes too.

i'm really impressed by the whole nova arc in the movie.

still I felt a bit odd being compelled to basically root against the humans. I guess Woody got better at the end, and Nova was supposed to be some sort of link to a supposedly peaceful future between the faded humans and the apes, but they really didn't give you a single reason to be ambivalent about cheering the end of humanity. Perhaps that nihilism resonates in light of current events, and the trilogy definitely progressed logically, but I was a bit unsettled regardless.

As it stands, she's the ONLY human that ever helped them. They accepted her even to the point of bringing her along with them. So I'm wondering how if ( to this point) she's the only human allowed in their inner circle, how it turns into Humans becoming subservient. But then again, humans gonna human, so maybe over the years more humans found them and started the wars all over again. Who knows?

Everything happened so quickly that it was hard to digest some of the major plot mechanics (like Winter backstabbing the clan, the clan being captured)...maybe it was bc I was so far removed from having seen the previous 2.

I'll have to rewatch after seeing the first 2 again. I loved the 2nd so I'll have to give Reeves the benefit of the doubt here and blame myself

The "Donkeys" we apes that were loyal to Koba ( after the events of "Dawn), The Colonel told them that they'd be spared if they helped the humans fight against the apes. The Gorilla that Winter was supposed to get rid of ( per Caesar's orders) offered Winter the same deal ( If you help me escape, you can join us on the other side, and the humans will spare you), So Winter let him go and cooked up the whole "he escaped" shit.

the emotional moments are drawn out a bit (as Will said, a lot of characters just staring at each other) and I think they could've moved along a lot of the exposition after the initial action sequences. One of my favorite recent trilogies. I have Dawn as the best of the bunch.

Really loved all of these and this one was no exception. I was thinking Nova was the girl's name that Taylor falls for in the original but had to look up and confirm. That's dope, still not sure how she and other humans become slaves after all this. Also, weren't nukes deployed at one point destroying much of the world in the original, burying Statue of Liberty, etc? Maybe not gonna keep that story arc which is fine too. They should probably stop here and not murk up an excellent trilogy overall.

That's dope,
>still not sure how she and other humans become slaves after
>all this.

as we saw, The Virus renders humans unable to speak ( which probably means there'd be no way to keep a military force active), also we know from the original movie, that the events of that movie take place centuries after the events in THIS one, so maybe the virus mutated over time and stunted the intellectual capabilities of the humans? As we know from REAL history, people who are outnumbered and at a disadvantage technologically, tend to lose wars. Add to it the inability to communicate with each other. The Apes had guns, numbers, and the power of speech. They won.

Also, weren't nukes deployed at one point
>destroying much of the world in the original, burying Statue
>of Liberty, etc? That could've also wiped put a vast amount of humans too, I'd imagine. It was probably a last-ditch effort to save humanity. It obviously didn't work...
