by having it be Abram... that carries no where near the emotional weight of having it be one of the longer tenured members of the group.
So I was glad when Glenn got it too...

And because that was such a punk move to me when they not only faked his death last year, but stretched that shit out for like 5 episodes.

Glad they had some balls this time around.

I thought it would be two people the whole time. But I thought they would go after Maggie. Then Glen would speak up and catch Lucille too. Like you when they went with Abram I was pissed. But then when Daryl threw that punch and you see Glen behind Negan while he was talking. I was knew it. Fucking great episode though. Glad they didnt wait until the last 5 minutes to show us what we wanted to see. The episode was even better with us getting to see the rest of the group deal with what happened. So excited for this season.

Speaking from a comic book reader's perspective, that element was very creative.

I hope the show will manage the Carol and Morgan storyline well since Negan and his crew is such an element to itself which could take up a half a season on it's own, especially since Daryl is a captor with them now.

Are you talking about the comic book depictions or just the TV depictions? If you comparing the comic book depictions, there's one action that The Governor made that still bothers me well after seeing it play out. I am biting my tongue since I don't want to ruin the scene in particular for folks that haven't read the comics. The show for whatever reasons softened The Governor and I'm guessing the show runners learned their lesson and are adapting with how Negan will be shown.

part of the reason why the Governor was softened is because they cast David Morrissey, and how he interpreted the character.

Comic The Governor > Comic Negan > TV Negan > TV The Governor

The show did NOT do The Governor justice. They've already done Negan justice in 2 episodes.

Ramsay Bolton comes to mind but Negan has already shown a few more layers.

Obviously I can’t speak on where things will go from here but I’ll bet Morgan winds up with a pantheon level credential to his name when all is said and done. Negan could easily have been turned into a campy, one note maniac instead of the measured sociopath JDM gave us.

All those one liners could have been delivered with some cheesy laughter, like some bad impersonation of Ledger’s Joker, but JDM just spits it out in the same tone as he says everything else.

This is emotionally conflicting since Negan delivers the dry wit of those lines with a keen sense of comedic timing and undeniable charm.

This, coupled with the fact that he’s oddly reasonable in the way he delivers each round of bad news, manages to take some of the edge off of him in a way that keeps us engaged. After all, he does understand that it takes a little time to process the notion of chopping your sons arm off.

He plays it so cool until that one moment of real anger from him when he gets face to face with Rick toward the end, but even that came across as but a hint of the monster lurking within as opposed to the sort of psychotic outburst a lesser show or actor might have brought forth.

To me that was the most chilling aspect of Negan, as the cavalier approach he takes toward meeting out such horrific punishment is terrifying in and of itself. Getting a glimpse of that extra gear makes me wonder what he’s capable of if and when he actually loses his shit, to use Negan’s favorite word.

Of equal intrigue for me was the slow, painful breaking of Rick. I was annoyed with Rick’s usual tough guy act when he spit out the “I’m gonna kill you” line, which came about five minutes after I told me wife “I hope Rick has enough sense not to do his “I’m gonna kill you” bit on this one. He looked soundly defeated and good leader would have had more sense than to antagonize a man like Negan in that situation, but there was Cowboy Rick running his mouth like the lives of his people weren’t faced with a real threat of imminent peril.

After that he got broke down so thoroughly I damn near cried with him and couldn’t even laugh at the snot bubble. That last scene with Rick was heartbreaking.

All in all this was one of the best hours of TV I’ve ever watched. Between this and that GOT finale, TV has peaked in ways I cannot fathom being surpassed

I realize such high praise is frowned upon but that’s what this was for me. I can’t speak for anyone else and I’m not trying to make any hard comparisons or an in depth study here. This is just the immediate reaction I have in the here and now. To me this was an amazing hour of television with few rivals.

You could have posted a rebuttal.
You could have chosen reasonable discourse.

But no, you chose to be an antagonistic troll.

Just thought I'd point that out for later, when someone inevitably wants to throw darts at me when this thread devolves into an unproductive mess.

It's funny how so many of you people piss and moan about how OKP has gone downhill and how it's infested with trolls yet you can't resist the urge to create conflict out of thin air, even in response to something purely positive.

Never got this far in the comics, so all Negan is all fresh to me (other than random shit spoiled throughout the years).

> This is emotionally conflicting since Negan delivers the dry wit of those lines with a keen sense of comedic timing and undeniable charm.

My wife and I were in stone cold silence through most of the episode but when Negan asked Simon what Darryl's name was and he responded with "Ha! I can actually believe that!".... I fucking lost it. The scene was so intense and his response so absurdly appropriate that I started laughing hysterically. Credit to JDM for a helluva performance.

While the surprisingly strong season 6 was working towards this with the survivors getting grittier...gotta admit for 5 years it was mainly generic redshirt(c) characters biting the dust in a fucked up way.

When they got the balls to kill off a main character they would give them a whole sendoff; their last episode would be focused on them, they would die doing something noble on the way out, slow motion of them dying with the cast members screaming.."NOOOOooooo!".

This is the first time they treated a main character like a piece of shit by giving them an ignoble death like they do those one to three episode castings, lol. They've been pussyfooting around the killing so long it does feel like a jarring change.

I guess maybe I just was not as invested as others, I've watched every episode, complained about its awfulness quite a bit but still watched. But after Sunday my only take away from the ep is they did a great job of not making me fall asleep (my issue not the shows, it is a compliment). I was intrigued, I wanted to know what happened and what was gonna happen, the beatings were brutal, we've seen similar stuff before tho. I remember a head squishing in critical darling GoT if I remember correctly. Just seem like people stepped off their political soapboxes for a minute and shifted it towards AMC and TWD.

Thing is outside of GOT just being a better show overall, it's also made clear that anyone can get it...and they do usually because of their own stupidity.

However Walking will have motherfuckers making the same mistakes over and over again and give em a pass just because they are crowd favorites or unkillable because they are the stars (Rick and his son).

I liked the deaths because they were 'earned'. Rick basically declares war, MURDERS dozens of their men in their sleep..there had to be heavy blowback as opposed to them poetically killing Morgan or someone else from the shows B or C team. Ive got issues with the teasing of the deaths, but it played out the way a 'good' show would have played it out, regardless of the violence.

seems odd to me. Glenn got a ton of focus leading up to this. He's a beloved character and it sucks to see him go but it is what it is. They will surely mourn him all season.

It's pretty damn said people can't see having this kind of reaction for a FICTIONAL show means the writing/acting/directing is pretty good and will want to continue to watch. I could understand the outlandish reactions if the show was an autobiography or someone that actually existed.

I never planned on it, never read the comic, but I saw so many gifs/memes of the season 7 premiere I decided to start from the beginning and even knowing what was coming it was still surprising and hard to watch. They really took out characters who were strong for the team and had great emotional connections simply based on how many people from Rick's group they were personally responsible for saving on so many occasions.

Just have to say I have to stick with the show from here on because just watching a couple videos about the comic gave me so many spoilers and made me realize how often they hint and foreshadow certain moments that made big impacts in the comic that I'd rather be surprised from now on.

now here's my **spoiler** and what I want to see happen, really don't understand why animals never turn and Ezekiel feeding those fools zombie fed pigs is great, I want to see The Kingdom ride on the Saviors or at least see them get sick from the pigs.

AND, there's nothing anybody from Alexandria, Hilltop, or Kingdom can do for revenge that compares to what Negan did, he has perpetual checkmate, I can't really think of the best way to punish him.

Glad they provided some insight from Darryl's encounter with him from last season. I still don't quite understand what the other lettered jumpsuit dudes are doing, but whatevers.

Curious to see how the passage of time affected the Alexandria folks. We saw Carol basically fully healed (physically and mentally) and Darryl in extended purgatory. Rick looks like he's still broken but is that rubbing off on the rest?

they tried to get to him, even leaving that very cruel reminder in his cell but he didn't bite.

just on the continuity side I guess they wouldn't want him walking around looking Dwight for the rest of the show, and being an original character they can do a lot more with him without much backlash from the comic fans.

I'm ready Negan to get it lol I hate that dude but he's a great villain.

I'm sure Rob and I don't reflect the majority of viewers but they wrote her as an idiot.

A whole fucking episode where all she says is shit like "yeah, sure, ok, this works, alright, sure thing, alrighty, you got it".

Spending an entire episode hoping to get people invested in a moron who does nothing but illustrate how expendable she is is the act of a moron IMO.

She proved to be completely useless.

how would that be possible?

i mean, maybe there's some book backstory i don't know, but Morgan's wife was black.

unless it's a made up story, the girls mom is right there and she's white. also, she said she lost a rack of siblings to the Saviors and Morgan just had his son.

the math don't make that possible.

Strong initial episode, followed by boring and/or garbage episodes there after, followed by a fairly strong episode to cap off the show to serve as a cliffhanger to keep folks engaged for the next upcoming season. I guess I'm a fool for thinking the show was break out of this slump since the first couple of episodes were pretty strong, but I'll be damned if I was literally coming close to sleeping during the last two episodes. In year's past, the subpar acting was the reason the show suffered; I think in this season they have too many subplots to juggle and it's hard for me to care too deeply for the secondary and tertiary characters since not enough time is invested to care too deeply about them.

Ultimately, I only have myself to blame for continuing to watch, but this season has really fallen off IMO. I'm sure folks here will disagree with me, which is cool.

They run the same formula every single season. There ARE too many subplots to care about anyone else. They really need to pare down the cast and concentrate on the core. They do too many of these side episodes where they take tangental characters and give them spotlight episodes.

They have to keep investing in the formula. Keep investing time into these characters so you do care about them, so there is more oomph to their eventual demise. Otherwise, you just run out of characters.

I'm a big fan and I can't even defend the bullshit formula that this show has created. The reason the comic works so well is because it has way more focus. Tera should have never gotten a whole episode with just her, most of that shit could have been shoved in and given 20 minutes at the most just so we can see there was another community of people who feared Negan's group.

No doubt the mid season finale will end on a cliff hanger. It's like they can't not do it at this point and people just eat it up.

I saw a video clip on the Yahoo Roku app a few weeks ago that mentioned the ratings for the episodes after the season premier falling off. The clip stated that the ratings are normally high for the premier, dip and fall off for the middle episodes, and increase for the season/mid-season finales. This year, the fall off in ratings was worse than prior years according to Neilsen numbers. The prevailing theory is that folks were and still are upset with the way Glenn get beat down.

Given that the numbers typically fall off for the middling episodes (at least according to the Yahoo video clip I saw), it appears AMC is aware folks don't watch the episodes I was complaining about earlier, but I suppose they don't care since the ratings in general are still high enough to garner top ad revenue.

I typed all that to say it appears the show won't improve since the subpar quality for the middling episodes isn't a big concern for AMC.

We met Morgan's family... LOL It would be a weird and forced twist, imo to suddenly introduce some daughter from him, never mind her given backstory doesn't at all match with Morgan's.

Now, Morgan or someone adopting that girl seems like something that would make sense, story wise

Looks like I agree with others here, started off strong and then kinda dwindled again. Mid-season finale not even was so-so, dude's guts got spilled was cool. Negan is still pretty awesome villain, played extremely well but we are just waiting for that final showdown. Its like everyone hates him and yet are way too afraid to rise up but they will eventually cuz that's what happens in this show.

when the best episode so far since the break is one that featured Dwight and Eugene.

I'm vested, in part because of those around me, but I don't watch TWD because I care about the show.

the rest of this shit could have been done with a 15 minute montage instead of 10 or so episodes of nothing happening.

In response to Reply # 68

the show stinks when Negan isn't involved for the most part and is stellar when he's involved and especially so when he's on camera. Pretty similar to how the Cavs struggle and look very vulnerable whenever LeBron's not suited up for Cleveland.

I'm guessing you enjoyed this episode much more than I did because it meandered way too much for me to give it too much approval. The second half was pretty good, but the first half was a total waste of time.

I wonder how much influence Kirkman has inside the writer's room for this show since this show suffers from juggling the multiple character while Kirkman for the most part does it well enough with the comics. I guess it's not a fair comparison to compare a comic book to a television show since there are way more cooks in the kitchen with a TV show, but the difference in storytelling is pretty vast.

I enjoyed this episode so much because Morgan is one of the few good characters left. To see him completely go back on his beliefs and brutally kill one of his own was just wow. I didnt mind the meandering because I dont feel we have had many Morgan episodes. Had this been another Rick, Carl, Michonne, Carol, or even Daryl episode I would have hated it.

But overall this season is trash. The highlight of the season was the opener. Which honestly shouldnt have even been apart of this season but they wanted to drag that shit out. So now you have this big reveal and fantastic episode. Only to follow it up with filler after filler after filler. Shit they managed to make me not care about Daryl anymore.

kill Negan so easily and don't. Just seems like poor writing to me.

I gave Rick a pass because he was so shook.

But Sasha easily could have shanked him when he was kneeling down next to her. Shit was stupid.

Anyway, I hope this finale is a worthwhile payoff after all this filler.

They couldnt have stayed there becuase the Savior's were going to start searching the buildings for more walkers for the wall. They heard Eugene give the order over the walkie-talkie.

that outside of the threat of violence, the Negan character will get ruined by this television show, which is a shame because Jeffrey Dean Morgan is doing a stellar job with the role given the material he has to work with. I won't say too much to spoil what lies down the road for the show assuming the show is faithful to the comics, but I see the future seasons being worse than this recent season.

**edit**

I know I wasn't the only one, but did anyone else think of The Watchmen as soon as Negan said he was going to kill Carl? Folks that are much more familiar with The Watchmen knows what I am referring to, and I'm not just referencing that fact Jeffery Dean Morgan was in the movie portrayal.
