"PREACHER DISCUSSION, PILGRIMS."

Discuss what is arguably one of the greatest stories ever told in any medium below...
Let's talk AMC's Preacher adaption, folks. Pony up, ARSEFACE! And yes, we can shoot the shit over the comic too.

i'm IN on this so far...

there's some great acting going on in this 1st episode...all the way around the cast so far is really really good at bringing a feeling of 'realness' in a very crazy unreal environment...and thats KEY in my opinion.

Again i've never read the comic, but judging by this first episode, the thing that i'm MOST attracted to is the very delicate balancing act & fine line between the undeniable 'raw real' feel of a lot of it and the 'over the top otherworldly' element of it.....hopefully the story and actors continue to walk that fine-line high-wire and not teeter TOO far over to the unbelievable.

loved this first episode...so its been set to auto DVR now...its a keeper if they keep it up!

I like the translation they made for the screen...some of the characters are even more unhinged then their comic counterparts, some are a little more subdued, but it def captures the insanity.

Hopefully this picks up steam, seems alot of mofos have read the comic as far as online reviews are concerned so im looking forward to people experiencing the world for the first time.

At first I was a bit sad that they were not following the comic to the letter. However seeing as how much R-rated stuff they gotta cut out, how much special effects they will be allowed to sneak in with the budget I get it. Tulip is great and I'm sure the white knights mad as shit that she is black. I'm fucking in.

to premier this against Game Of Thrones. Caught this on Sling TV DVR, which I'm expecting how most folks will catch it during this season of Game Of Thrones. The episode does a good job of leaving the audience wanting more. Pretty expensive looking pilot episode; it appears The Walking Dead has given AMC brass balls in terms of how much to spend of special effects for its shows.

Hopefully the show will draw a decent enough audience since it so quirky and out there. Surprised this didn't air at 10 instead of 9 since there was so much violence, but if the advertisers were cool with it, who am I to judge?

I think they purposely premiered it at 10 to catch those who would normally watch GOT and say "hey look what we have" but that was the okey doke because when it comes back next weekend, it will be on at 9. But maybe there won't be much overlapping with audiences.

Odd for them to shift the times around like that, but it makes sense to air it at 10:00 when they did. They should continue to show it at 10:00 to maximize their viewers, but I believe they are doing a Talking Preacher type show afterwards, which may explain the earlier 9:00 time slot.

They should have just show the pilot after Memorial Day weekend to avoid confusion as well since they are going to show the second episode during the first Sunday in June and not this weekend coming up.

And I was intrigued even if I didn't love the pilot. The tone is all over the place, especially the vampire dude's presence, but the main character is pretty engaging. As is Tulip of course. Should be fun.

I'm not 100% on board with keeping the series in Annville as opposed to the big road trip it was, but I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt.

Cassidy and Tulip were perfectly introduced, though.

this was very good and I have to admit, I was kinda like "ehhh" when I saw one of the previews for the show. But then I saw an installation and the promotions and said okay maybe. But it was very good, top notch acting from everyone.

BUT LISTEN...the last scene when old dude goes to see his mom and he is like "stop calling me blah blah" and she's like "what are you talking about?" and for a moment, I thought that she was going to say "i haven't been calling you" and it would be revealed that he was just crazy and hallucinating but NOOOOOOOOO fam cut his own damn heart out and laid it on the damn table. MY GOD HOLY SHIT.

i don't think they made it clear that Cassidy was a vampire. I think they hinted at it, but it wasn't clear that was actually what he is...especially the part where he's sitting beside the house and holds his hand out and it has the fire on it, I wasn't thinking "oh he's burning because of the sun." BUT that could be intentional and it was probably going to be explained later, so I guess I can't really complain.

did you know he was a vampire before watching the show? or did you realize it while watching the show? that's a factor.

i think it's obvious to those who know because yeah now that makes sense. but most of my friends didn't think it was clear. honestly i thought he was some type of demon (hence the fire thing because he seemed unphased). but looking back it wasn't so much the cow thing, but the fact that he was sleeping in dirt during the day. admittingly I overlooked the fact that he pointed out they were flying toward the sun and/or the blood thing. so just looking at the religious aspect, i was like oh that's got to be a demon.

i can definitely see your point it about him being just some kind of demon though

then turning the dude into the blood on tap sealed it

because I had to run it back twice (I think I was doing something else) and finally I put the words on after that scene (for some reason I wasn't following along properly lol). So yeah, in retrospect, it all makes total sense, but given what I knew about the story, i thought it was a battle of two sides ("good" and "evil") and thought he was just a demon that good guys were trying to kill.

The seasons with the first cast is probably still the best super hero show put on television.

The casting of lightskinned black women that would put Hype Williams to shame.

I was really wary for a lot of reasons. I'm not the biggest Rogen fan. I saw it was an hour and a half and that's usually pushing it. I saw there was a "Talking Preacher" already and rolled my eyes (turns out it's just for the pilot and the last ep, so they're not totally jerking themselves off). Loved every minute though. Good choice to start before the comics and get everyone there in a way that made sense. The character intros for Cass and Tulip were fantastic.

One thing that's working in their favor is that it's so character-based that once you get the casting right other things can fall into place. Still though, the tone of the comics is damn near impossible to pull off on the screen, but they found it. I actually started the comics not realizing they were filming and am just finishing them up now. I can't wait to see how both of these go.

It noticed it but I wasn't that taken aback considering it seemed more American geographical ignorance (Russia got the same treatment) then lets say a Black Hawk Down situation...particularly since the clip was meant to be cheesy.

There was another comic book property this year that I thought was MUCH more egregious with it's cultural racism (Deadpool, why did you break my heart so?)

sorta yes, sorta no. the comics go all over the place but they do make it clear what jesse/the spirit's mission is. the show is starting before the comics though and it appears they're interjecting a later storyline (that was originally a sidetrack from the overall mission) to bridge the gap. that's what the bald meat factory owner is doing there. it's a little bit messy because they've had to cut some corners to get all the current characters there.

Plot points are moving slow as molasses at this point; reminds me of the first season of Bloodline from Netflix. I hope things will turn up at some point. AMC definitely should have premiered this after Game of Thrones ended; ratings have to be crud at this point. That is unless the comics have that big of a following; I wouldn't know since I'm not familiar with the source material.

On a positive note, that closing song from the most recent episode is pretty fucking stellar. Thought it was an old song and it turns out the song was just released this year.

Underneath it all there's a good to great show, but it's not even serving that audience right...right now its a meandering pre-quel.

Imagine the first star wars movie was just Luke arguing high school shit with his adopted parents and Obi Wan trying to be the best bingo player at the old folks home on his planet.

It feels like mediocre fan fiction for comic fans who didn't want to let the original go. There is a good show here, but that writing room needs to be overhauled...

STRENGTHS:

All the actors are putting in work and are pulling off their roles. Crazy characters like Cassidy and even the stereotypical single mother have nuance and I like the world they built in that town.

The individual scenes all work and the directing is very solid...they've had some awesomely violent set pieces and even the darker humor banter moments are well shot/planned out as individual pieces. The problem is...

NEGATIVES:

The scenes work, but they don't build to anything, lol. The prostitute hunt into the sink hole death into Tulip meeting/almost killing Cassidy was a cool run of events...but without an investment in a show's bigger purpose it feels we are just wading water.

Why the super slow reveal of all the players? In the comic the story was off and running by like page 5 and each character they introduced had an immediately apparent purpose/goal. Why are we being obtuse? I understand they didn't want to explain the Agents of Heaven so they would have the regeneration gags in later episodes...but we should know more about them and their motivation by now.

Right now on the show outside of Tulip.... NONE OF THE CHARACTERS HAS A CONCRETE GOAL, LOL.

At least Cassidy puts in solid comic relief and has established he's just forced to lay low and wait until he gets cash to leave town. But Jessie? What's his slacker excuse? While he finally settled into wanting a popular church it feels half assed considering his lack of effort and the bigger stakes involved. You've got the power of GOD and all you want is more people in your shitty church's pews? At least have him try to get a megachurch or something.

and while some shit happened that didn't necessarily lead to the bigger story they were riveting pieces of television on their own (the whole drugdealer/girlfriend sequence). Preacher's just kinda happy being Tarantino cool, which is fine, but we need more.

about the comic, you'd be lost. They are moving a bit slow and for some reason on another forum I am on, people are super confused. Like ppl are still asking about the agents and who they are really...("are they clones?") lol. it's a mess.

I haven't watched this past Sunday's episode yet. Probably tonight. But yeah the last episode was a little slow but it didn't bother me but seeing ppl who loved epi 1 and 2 say "nah i'm fed up" and its' only epi 4 is red flag.

against Game of Thrones seems like such a horrible idea. I'm watching this on DVR at this point since this show at the moment isn't appointment viewing, so I have to imagine ad revenue via live viewers isn't all that high.

Unless this show costs peanuts to make, I can't see how this show is netting AMC top dollar. It's sad because the actors/actresses aren't doing bad jobs with the material they are given, so I want to see where the show goes. But at the same time, I wouldn't be too surprised if the plug is pulled after this run of episodes because I can't see this being a huge hit.

that Rubicon show that got cancelled? I didn't watch Rubicon, but that got the axe while this show lives on seems a bit odd to me.

Perhaps the streaming/DVR numbers for this show are good? It costs peanuts to make? Hope things will turn up in the second season in terms of the pace. Quality acting throughout the show, which is the main reason I continue to watch the show, but just a complete chore to sit down to. Hard for me to see this show becoming appointment viewing in terms of watching it live.

some of the critiques I'm seeing perplex me...
maybe its a generational thing (i think i'm a little older than a lot of okplayers here) but i just don't understand the need for 'instant understanding' of whats going on in a story line.

i mean really, There's only been a handful of episodes so far, so i actually DONT expect to understand everything thats going on. i DONT WANT to be able to expect to understand everything thats going on or be able to predict where the plots are going. i actually WANT the story to keep me at least somewhat in the dark and curious, as it unfolds and reveals itself throughout the season.

that how the best stories roll.

this show is damn good.
its unpredictable (just when you THINK you know exactly whats gonna happen next-left turn). Its excellently cast and excellently acted.
Its funny, ass-kicking, cool, crazy.
AND on top of it all, the damn thing can be charming and have heart. SOMEhow, in spite of its WAYyy over-the-top-ness they've made me actually care about these characters.

glad it got a second season. count me in!

I have no experience with the source material I had never even heard of it until the show was greenlit. So I don't have any pre conceptions on what the show *should* be. That said, I enjoy it. I too am patient and am comfortable waiting for them to start explaining stuff. And slowly but surely, they are. After Episode 5, I've got a pretty good grasp on the characters and the general premise.

It's holding my interest. It's funny, irreverent and suspenseful. I certainly didn't expect what happened to Eugene at the end of episode 5. The only thing I'm not sure about is the cowboy in the flashbacks. I'm not sure how that ties in to the main narrative.

Breaking Bad, The Americans, Justified, The Wire, The Shield, The Expanse, Killjoys, Dark Matter, Better Call Saul, Game of Thrones, Daredevil, The Good Wife, Shameless, House of Cards, Orange Is the New Black, Lost.... none of them are doing what this show is doing, and that's fine...but many of these shows are considered good tyo great, so I'm NOT agreeing with this lane of storytelling we're getting on Preacher being how the best stories roll..... you don't have to understand everything (see: Lost), but the bigger audience does need to establish an affinity foor the storyline and where it could go with anticipation.... well, yeah, thats what I'm saying too more or less. i opened with 'to each his own', and agree that its totally a preference thing. for example there are shows/movies that my younger sibling thinks are really amazing that i find way to predictable to hold my interest for long, and there shows/movies that i find interesting and exciting that he finds too 'obtuse' or 'slow moving'. ya like what you like, its a preference thing (may or may not be 'generational', i said that based on my own experiences). so yep, i fall into the category of the ones who are down with it in that i dont have any probz at all with the pace of 'reveal' going on in Preacher so far...

well yeah, i'm not saying your wrong, maybe most people ARENT interested enough in whats going on with Preacher, i don't know. i have no idea if Preacher is getting a big or small audience to be honest. I don't care really, (other than the fact that i obviously want it to get at LEAST enough of an audience to justify the studio allowing them to being able to COMPLETELY tell all of the story(ies) that they want to tell ).

as for the shows you listed, i haven't seen a lot (most) of those, so i can't speak to how their 'pacing and reveal' compares. Again, i think we're agreeing that it comes down to each persons own taste for how much they feel like wanna 'know' or be 'shown' either overtly, covertly, or maybe only hinted at. My fave things tend to fall into digging the 'covertly' or 'maybe only hinted' at lane. That said, don't get it twisted...i DO like to 'feel' like the writers have a big picture & overall plan. Even in an ambiguously styled story presentation, i DO want the feeling like there is a method to the madness, and so far, Preacher HAS delivered on that for me. (for the record i bailed on "Lost" relatively early because, rightly or wrongly, i personally felt that the writers DIDNT REALLY have a sound enough plan for the story lines they started, i felt like they were just winging a lot of it. Maybe i was wrong, but for Lost, i didn't care ENOUGH about the story lines or characters to stick around for that one.). For Preacher, so far i DO care about both, so yeah, thats where my own personal pref's lean. In fact, when it comes down to it, I am really curious about the 'characters themselves' in Preacher as much as i am the 'overall plot line(s)'. I tend to lean that way in everything that i like a lot My priorities are FIRST give me 'believable' characters (or at least believable 'character motivations'), then the plot can come second.

oh and when i said 'thats how the best stories roll' i really meant that in a very general way...as in, the best stories (for ME) are the ones that don't lay all their cards on the table right away...the ones that kinda reveal themselves as if you are reading a novel, ya know what i'm saying?

Ignoring the fact their long game ended up just being smoke and mirrors...the show starts off with a bunch of grand mysteries; where the island was, why was it so strange, why did everyone seem to be destined to be there...etc...things that will take awhile to answer.

But you also had enough short term goals and conflict for someone to hold onto. They had to figure out how to get food, shelter, there were various power struggles, and the characters immediately clicked or hated on each other (writing this out, I wonder what other shows have written shows stolen from Survivor).

Big long term mysteries are cool...but you also have to give characters goals in the short term. I felt that the first half of the season struggled with this outside of a few exceptions (Tulip's quest to get Jessie back) everyone was meandering around. New shows take time to get their footing...but it tends to be because they have to figure out how to balance their focus (side plots, main plots, characters). Here it just seemed unfocused in general.

At the halfway point they've finally given us answers but most importantly goals; the Mayor's stuck helping with a cover up he had nothing to do with and n. Jesse's let greed (or maybe the half demon power) get him to the point where he did something really fucked up...now he's going to have to make amends. The Angel's went off the grid to try to fix their own big fuckup before heaven finds out, except heavens found out and has sent a 'cleaner' to fix it all up...etc.

The bigger plot is probably going to be much bigger...they alluded to a war with heaven and hell and Jesse's so powerful even Angels gotta bow down (gotta assume demons are gonna start getting into the mix also which will be fun)..the sky is literally the limit. But now the party's finally got some appetizers for guests to snack on with drinks being served as opposed to being a really nice looking empty hall.

As a result its a much stronger show then Jessie kinda hanging waking up drunk/half assing his preaching while two strange dudes that wanna kill/attack him with an empty keep on barely missing him 3 episodes in a row.

while on top of that being needlessly vague. the whole point of jesse is he's a man of action. they did such great character intros in the pilot that it didn't make sense to delay jesse's mission much further.

I have no interesting in arguing with you because you are perfectly entitled to your opinion, but I'm curious, did you see the most recent episode that just aired on July 3rd? I ask because some some light was shed in terms of what in the world is going on and it felt like a complete breathe of fresh air compared to the prior episodes. I won't spoil anything in case you haven't seen it yet.

I have a feel the Bloodlines comparison I made earlier in this post will be spot on in terms of things turning up and the show getting better as the season goes on.

Ive come around; while I do wish the plotting was a bit tighter in the beginning now that there are

SPOILERS:

Although WTF at those two murders.

At least the sheriff made sense since you can argue it was a mercy killing. But ol girl basically set up a harmless dude to save a bunny, lol.

And while logically it would have been problematic; easiest solution to the Cassidy problem was to take him with her when she went to go get revenge...

Hopefully that will lead to a change in her character because that was a huge shift in terms of how that character operated. Should be interesting to see how she and Jesse interact from now on.

If Cassidy went with Tulip on the road trip, Jesse wouldn't have gotten the angel hands nor would there have been the scenes with Jesse and Cassidy reconciling, which I guess the show felt was important since it ended the episode off if my memory is accurate.

True, but she wanted and needed Jessie to be a part of that. That's why she brought him back instead of finishing the job herself

but did the two angels end up in Hell in the general sense or just The General's personal version of Hell? It appeared as if it was the latter version since The General was the focal point of all the suffering that was occurring. I'm guessing if Arseface shows up, that'll answer my question, assuming he was actually sent to Hell.

It's cool to finally get some bearings in terms of what's going on, but I'm still confused in that sense.

I'm not a comic book reader, but I'm curious what you comic book reading folks thought of the season and that last episode as well. I comedic aspects for this show feel forced to an extent and makes the show feel disjointed to me. Is that similar to how the comics are? Since they are movie star dudes, I wonder how committed Seth Rogen and his partner are in terms of working on this show for the foreseeable future. I get the feeling this show is somewhat of a work of passion for them since they mentioned reading the comics in school, but Hollywood money for movies has to speaking louder than the money they get from AMC for this show I'd have to imagine.

The comic was very dark think Tarantino-esque humor where some topics were tackled seriously(abuse).

While the TV show can be dark its also so surreal to a cartoon level which blunts some of the darkness evident in the comic.

They had some great ideas in the tv show that imho makes it superior to the comic in some ways. But I go back to my biggest problem with the show; the plotting.

Blowing up the town we grew to know over the past ten weeks is a hilarious idea on paper and works well in the world they built.

However, considering how the first season came off unsure about plotting...I can't tell if (apparently) killing off every side character we grew to like making their storylines/characterizations moot was balsy or just shows you how worthless the whole exercise was.

To get to this point feels like something you could have covered in a two hour long pilot as opposed to a whole season.

And the thing is they did a great job with building this world with all these quirky motherfuckers; who saw Preacher and the S&M couple making up? The organist killing off the mayor, while a surprise, was a very interesting wrinkle to her story. Or even going deeper to what happens to a religious community when they know there's no higher power looking out for them?

Ill be watching next year; there's nothing like Preacher on tv, I just can't decide if I love it yet.

Did you watch the Talking Preacher show that aired after the last episode? If not, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg were there and they explained they wanted to slow things down for the first season because plot points and ideas were introduced very quickly and they wanted to establish a lot of the origins for the characters on a piecemeal basis so the audience could understand things better.

That couple, especially the dude he got his arm broken, got a gun put in his mouth, and had to blow one of the eardrums to bits to avoid The Preacher's power agreeing to hide The Preacher made no sense to me and was one of the times the last episode lost me. Felt like a weird tonal shift to see them be so welcoming to The Preacher and even Tulip given that Tulip broke the woman's nose on the table in the same episode. It'll be interesting to see if the show tries to meld the dark subject matter along with the comedic beats Goldberg and Rogen seem to want to interject. I am curious how much time those two will invest in this show since I believe they wrote movies in the past together and I have to think movie money trumps what they earn from AMC.

And another episode aired on the normal airing time of Monday 9PM. Bit of an odd decision there by AMC, but whatever.

What do folks think of the episodes so far? Amazingly violent so far and I have to think the action will tone down somewhat in future episodes, that is unless AMC just backed up the money truck for this show's special effects budget. Hopefully the storytelling is much more cohesive this go around compared to the first season.

The writing hasn't been all that great for all the episodes so far. While the most recent one was probably one of the best episodes for the show, the prior two episodes had some dismal dialog, in particular some scenes with Jesse and Tulip were pretty painful to witness.

is really getting into the meat and potatoes of the novels that makes this such a great universe.

That Damsels episode had so much foreshadowing. I was getting so hyped up. That Langelle poster when he gets out of the jazz joint ( Where he might or might not have had a conversation w/ God aka Jazz Cat) and the first appearance of The Grail and the Man in the White Suit.

Really loving the show.

the next villain or villains the show establishes to oppose Jesse will be formidable. It was somewhat disappointing to see the Saint of Killers get dealt with so early in the season. I guess the show didn't technically kill him off on camera, so I suppose there's some glimmer of hope he'll return.

He only had a few appearances in the comics as well. You can only do so much with him as an unstoppable/immortal killing machine. I think they did a good job establishing how much of a force he was, and found a way to sideline him that was ambiguous enough that it's easy to bring him back.

I think now they pivot towards the "neo-fascists in white suits" (not going to say their name due to spoilers). And they've started hinting around Jesse's family, so I'm guessing they make an appearance in the season finale or something.

And I think showing Jesse hiding his guns virtually guarantees that.

Depending on how far they want to stray from the comics, there are some very interesting directions they could go in with Jesse's family. Can't be an accident he buried him in a swamp in Angelville.

Great introduction to the character and his origin (though I guess he's appeared in a couple other episodes before this).

Only thing that I didn't buy was him dumping the boss off the balcony on the first day. Seemed redundant after him having him shoot the other finalist in the head just minutes before.

Still not sure if they can really pull Starr-related stuff off on basic cable, but now I'm pretty interested.

I wondered how they were going to pull that off, but it worked.

It's pretty clear where God is; he was in New Orleans all along. The guy dressed like a dog, as in the first person in the first bar that they visited. When Jesse looks in the messiah's notebook, it's all pictures of the dog.

Still not a perfect show. I recognize the issues and costs with making this truly a "road" show, but things seriously stagnate when they stay in one place for too long.

agreed, i think they'll mitigate this by sticking to interesting locations (like New Orleans) if they need to stay in one place for a few eps.

It was pretty choppy to me since the episode was hopping all over the place, moreso than they did this season, but the last 5-10 minutes were some of the best done yet for the entire show. That last shot of Tulip in the backseat was pretty memorable. I'm have no knowledge of the original material, so I'm curious how those who have read the comics view that last episode.

I think Cass knew Denis was a problem who should have never been turned and would eventually lead him back to his dark ways.

I think to vast majority of these season was the three main characters moping around Dennis' apartment, "looking for God," and generally being a drag.

Look, I get that in 2017 having a lead character swagger around like he's the literal reincarnation of John Wayne doesn't play as well, but Jeebus this season went a lot of nowhere once they got to New Orleans.

Some stuff they did well, like the stuff with Herr Starr, Humperdoo, and the Hitler/Arseface storyline, but they need a serious course correction. And I don't see relocating the action to Angelville next season as doing the trick.

I carried on out of some misbegotten duty. Third season was an actual improvement, so I figured I'd stick around for the fourth season. And it's been fucking awful. But by now, I figured I might as well keep watching to see how it ends.

These last nine episodes have seriously sucked. They've just been jamming in stuff from the comic book that it seems that they figured they wanted to incorporate at some point, but just made it stupid. And it's impressive to take "War in the Sun" and make it stupid.

Basically everything I said in #97 an #103 still applies. They tried to make this last season sort of a "road show," but now it's much too late.

Even with the increasing lack of restrictions on basic cable, this was never going to work. Because so much of its ethos is either out of date or impossible to translate.

This show has been terrible since the second season, yet I continued watching because I thought the original premise was original and I wanted to see how the story would resolve itself. Seth Rogan made news some weeks ago making jokes about how the last season of Game of Thrones ended and I have to say this dude must be on some high grade greenery if he thinks this show stuck the landing. I can't think of one positive aspect to how the show ended. I'm sure I would be even more upset if I even touched the source material because of ton of the last season felt quite rushed.

Seeing how this show has consistently gotten worse and worse has me a bit worried about The Boys since Seth Rogan has his hands on that as well. Hopefully that other show runner that's also involved with The Boys but isn't running Preacher will help steer the ship right. I forget his name and the other long running basic cable show he was involved with, but the interviews I've seen for season one has me on the optimistic side of things.
