"Silicon Valley Season 3 post"

Anyone still watching this besides me?

First ep., we got Stanford robotics, Elrich's Friar's Club repetoire, the continued failing upwards of Big Head, "Aviato," and R.I.G.B.Y.

Second ep., we got Jan the Man, vegan waffles, the exploration of squatter's rights, and horse fucking. Graphic horse fucking.

So, am I the only person who finds this hilarious?

I think the app had something to do with kids and parks because I remember the joke being that the app would inadvertently be a tool for kidnappers and pedophiles to use.

Fucking love this show - Erlich just killing it. Had to rewind the scenes with the new CEO from last episode and with Jian-Yang last night - I died as he tried to describe the ebb and flow.

So, so good. HBO's funniest since Conchords IMO.

I dig the tech vs. sales stuff, I just wish the new CEO wasn't so heavily leaning on the sales team. He seemed to do a real 180 from "I won't do it without you Richard" to "are you kidding? we sell what sales wants to sell!"

And I get that those moves establish him as shady, potentially out of touch business guy the core squad has to overcome (or maybe they join forces with the ousted Huuli guys...) but I just think it's time for...smaller stakes, more jokes? I don't know.

He *can't* do the things he wants to do efficiently without Richard. He knows Richard's value. Makes perfect sense.

I'm wondering if this might lead to Richard and Co. leaving Pied Piper and joining forces with the new company that will more or less do the same thing as Pied Piper.

hopefully he buys the company and they run it how they want

i agree with above though, enough of the same storyline over and over. how many times do they have to deal with either a backer or new CEO or someone promising them the moon only to steer them in the wrong direction. it's getting old.

In response to Reply # 25

>I was really looking forward to Skunk Works. FUCK!

and that having the Skunkworks "info" end up in Jack's hands is a part of their plan. The real life Meinertzhagen’s Haversack involved "accidentally" giving the enemy (fake) plans to distract them from the real surprise attack.

Also Richard is wearing a backpack, so no reason for him to be holding on to that folder. And unless it's bad production design, he's wearing kneepads (https://imgur.com/a/2xPuk). And you have Erlich talking to the gardener earlier in the episode. So possibly he went back to the gardener later and told him to have that hose out by the entrance so Richard could trip over it.

Better than anything he's ever done. Which is *really* fucking saying something.

He is really walking on hallowed ground with this show. Not only is it consistently smart and insanely funny, but the drama is also incredibly gripping.

Because, man, the first hour of Office Space is fantastic, and while everything after Joanna discovers the plot isn't AWFUL, it's not quite up to the standard of the rest of the movie.

it's a much more universal experience.

and I'm not sure he'll ever create more iconic characters than Beavis, Butthead and Boomhauer.

but as an overall product I'd safe put Silicon Valley #2 and it does have potential to be #1.

they couldnt let Richard have his moment. He was finally looking like a badass. He had confidence and everything was coming together. Only for the writers to remind us he is still and always will be Richard. Great episode. I thought they were going to name Monica the new CEO.

Like...let's be real...this show is fucking awesome. They managed to pick up and not miss a beat with Christopher Evan Welch's untimely passing.

But shit like the past few episodes make me miss him SOOOOOO much....

Suzanne Cryer is doing a decent job...but she's no fucking Chris Welch

RIP

but this does have an 'animated' atmosphere in general, sort of the same way Parks & Rec came across like a live action Simpsons at times.

but the issue with her character will always be that Peter Gregory was a very specific sort of person and he wasn't intended to die, and is character was so popular among fans of the first season that the writers opted to find a different angle on that character rather than insert a different archetype altogether.

I've grown to appreciate what she does, but what she does most of the time is remove the humanity from the analytical oddity that was Peter Gregory. she's not ordering every BK menu item to figure out her next investment strategy and, in that shadow, it hurts her. not her fault but that spectre always lingers for me and I wish it didn't.

they always come up with some brilliant new idea
only for one of them (usually Richard or Erlich, in fact just them 2)
to fuck it up royally
then when all hope is lost
the universe conspires to give pied piper the W
which they then fuck up again

wash, rinse, repeat

I think thats even what he said in the house. So his NDA doesn't cover activities that took place after he left; if anything, the NDAs of the team that are now back under the Hooli umbrella were the ones breached by that info getting to Bighead.

In most SV separation agreements, there is a "keep-our-name-out-your-mouth" clause. If you take the separation money and sign it, you sign away your ability today anything bad about the company. Theoretically, if you break this agreement, they can demand/sue you to get the money back.

Man, that was awful. Watching it back to back with Richard fucking it up with the Facebook chick was some serious cringe-inducing shit.

Line of the night, for me.

"Which, a hundred years, could involve literally setting her on fire..."

Yep. Probably not my overall favorite ep. of the season (2 through 4 were all really awesome), but definitely a continuation of a great season.

In the past, they just sort of made him "that guy who's the butt of jokes," but the longer the show goes, and the more we learn about his character, the more he becomes a highlight. Zach Woods crushing it too.

man, that whole argument:

"I don't think this going to work. I'm so sorry. I mean like what, we're going to bring kids in the world with this hanging over their head? That's not really fair, don't you think?"

She said to make sure to listen to himself. She directed it towards her advice but that's exactly what he wasn't doing when he was getting a big head about things. He didn't want to release the beta, he was convinced by others to do it. My guess is that pretty soon he'll be telling himself that he should have listened to his concerns with the beta.

her quote was something along the lines of "it's too techie, i don't get it." and his "well, i'm an engineer" response told it all.

it's not going to be received well by the masses.

I've seen a menu or two like that in my day when I thought I might became an enthusiast about something and quickly turned the other way.

I appreciate the depth of that, though, if that does prove to be the next point of conflict. At least it's not the guys getting fucked over by lady luck or making a decision about the product that doesn't work in the real world. While it's still them jumping the gun on something, this time it's ALL OF THEM jumping the gun and in a completely plausible way.

Plus it's a modern character flaw that hasn't been explored much. Getting too close to the tech and forgetting to give it an appealing public face that people who are completely unfamiliar with your product will feel comfortable with.

Felt bad for Erlichman. The judge reading him and Big Head the riot act was great.

Loved the Jack/Gavin exchange where it never occurs to them to fly together.

and Gavin with another a+ bullshit session w/ the board.

Ehrlich pronouncing "Embarcadero" and "San Francisco" slayed me.

... as did him staying in his costume for that exchange with Richard.

Dinesh picking the place "because it's farther from that jacket".

i mean they always screw up or take an L at the end of episodes but this felt more serious.

question: why can't they invest in a new UI? just work on the next release and make it more user friendly...seems like a no brainer. was Hendricks' airplane analogy actually legit or was he just being stubborn? i didn't get his reasoning at all.

It's not just that people don't know how to use the app: they don't even understand what the app is or does. So while fixing the presentation is a start, it wouldn't get to the core of the problem. That's why Richard said that it sucks to be ahead of their time.

but if at a minimum the UI was simple enough for the average joe to understand it's most basic function (storing files) that would be a win. people could use it like drop box even if they don't fully understand it's full capabilities.

I can't think of a program or app that would be so incredibly useful to people yet is too advanced for them to understand. Part of the challenge is dumbing it down for the average user but most tech companies can do that when needed.

Just have a basic user tutorial, extensive help system/forum, and replace stuff like this:

http://www.piedpiper.com/app/themes/pied-piper/dist/images/interface_large.jpg

with Basic & Advanced options and you're set.

Seems a no brainer that they would simplify the product instead of trying to raise the technological IQ of an average user. Then again there'd be no conflict for them to overcome if they did that. We'll see what happens in the finale.

Makes you question how many more seasons they can do though. I mean once Pied Piper is up and running and successful, then what?

And they've never fully tackled the absurdity of the winning side of Silicon Valley. I don't know too much about it either, really, but based on stories I've heard told about the video game industry's parties, off-site demo vacations and all the rest I can't imagine Judge and crew would struggle to find drama and comedy there.

In fact it's been part of the reason their constant struggles has been so frustrating. I honestly wouldn't mind if this group stopped struggling to make Pied Piper a reality and started struggling with their personal lives. We get hints of it with Dinesh's inability to have real friendships, Richard's inability to suppress his niche interests, Erlich's inability to succeed on his own terms, Jared's inability to use that dick on just one woman...

Gilfoyle is the only character they haven't really offered a glaring flaw for, but there's plenty in each of the other characters to deal with once the money and stability pours in. Not to mention it'd be the perfect time to 180 Gilfoyle's character and make Martin Starr reenact the scene where Bill drinks too much beer from the stolen keg in Freaks & Geeks (I usually don't ask for fan service but Martin Starr's played the Too Cool Guy for a while now and I miss his awkward side).

glad there was no bullshit cliff hanger. I mean we all saw the writing on the wall as soon as Erlich sold the blog. But they had me going at the end there. The fucking elephant though. Gavin was hilarious this entire season. The whole convo about the flash drive was great. Then the Jin Yang phone call at the end sealed it. Cant wait for next season.

You indeed could see what was going to "save" the company a mile away, but it was still extremely well executed. Best moments were everything relating to the elephant ("It turns out he liked performing"), the Flash drive convo, Jared crying for "normal reasons", random homie professing his love for Monica out of the blue, and Bachman going from seething to partying in one cut.

But while I'm glad things "worked out" for them all at the end without some corny twist, I feel some kind of way for them ending up right back at the beginning. Again. I think this is the third time this season that it's happened. It feels, I dunno, organic here because tech companies reboot and change focus all the damn time, but I would really like it if next season they lower the stakes a bit and don't have every episode be about the fate of the company hanging in the balance.

That doesn't imply that I didn't like this season. Might have been my favorite. But I hope they tell some different stories from here on out.

That was one of the funniest things in the ep. Not quite as funny as the elephant opening but easily had me in stitches

I almost wanted Richard and Erlich to have beef going into next season, which would have made an interesting dynamic. But the way they cut the scene mid rant to everybody laughing it up worked pretty well, so I wasn't too mad. Will Dinesh want some more shine since he cobbled that video chat program together that pretty much saved their ass? How much will Bighead and Bachmann do in the new company, and how far will Richard's stock drop? Can't wait for next season to find out
