With Steven Soderbergh showing the potential of shows with one director, Clive Owen & Andre Holland putting in performances of their careers, the ambitious score that somehow works, the evolving characters and storylines, and the beautiful set pieces & costumes, it doesn't get much better than this.

(S2E1 Spoilers)

Season 2 is off to a good start and I'm glad they didn't draw out Thackery's heroin addiction, though maybe we haven't seen the last of it. I'm hoping he makes a recovery and resumes his position at the Knick though. I also finally gained respect & sympathy for Dr. Gallinger, whose character was loathsome all last season.

Excited to see what happens with Barrow & Ping Wu. That finale scene with Wu and his cutlery coat was gully. Barrow is no Swearengen, he better not take Wu lightly and pay the man.

I like both Cornelia and Edwards, but their forbidden love affair was covered well enough last season, hope they're given something else to do in season two.

The relationship between Sister Harriet & Cleary is one of the best on the show, I'll be rooting for them to fight the case but it ain't looking too good for Sister and her nun savior was cold blooded in that scene. A Sister Act meets Oz storyline about her surviving in a 1901 woman's prison could be entertaining.

Bertie kinda bores me. Bono's daughter is cool.

It's gonna be a great season, can't wait.

he's still loathsome to me. the only reason he's detoxing thackery is so he doesn't have to work under edwards.

and he left his toothless wife for how long to play betty ford clinic?

he's still despicable to me. just not one-dimensional despicable.

i love the dynamic between the nun and Cleary.

Interested in seeing if Edwards eye condition will improve or will he begin to experiment on fixing his eye...but I'm not a fan of Edwards and that chick he was dating who got pregnant (the married one, i can't remember her name now)

I also like how they do previews for the next week...they really keep a tight lid on what's happening next.

what soderburgh is doing is truly special. what everyone involved is doing is special.

While this doesn't have the instant shock value of BB or say Mr. Robot or Narcos, from a pure filmmaking standpoint, this is exceptional.

Is any show even close to touching this in its breadth of technical, musical, and theatrical scope? My god, those Atlantic ocean sailboat scenes were breathtaking. The wrestling interlude and its tappity-tap score. The way the camera floats through the room when Algernon is pitching himself for Chief. The set design for the women's penitentiary visitor room. ugh..i feel like i need to watch each episode twice. once for storyline, and again to just watch the camera move.

what stuck out to me was nurse elkins relationship with
her father. very weird, physically abusive with a hint
of sexual deviance. kinda explains why she would fall
for someone like thackery she should have
stayed with bertie, and bertie may have moved on.

Thackeray a maniac. Just cut a piece of dude's brain out on some "I cured addiction!" Lolzers, so reckless and impulsive, yet articulates what medicine looked like in order to be where we are...

I'm'a need Edward's to stay wifed to ol girl, and leave that yt woman to her Rapey ass father in law and wack ass husband.

Glad Birdie found him self a little gem. And gah damn ol school racism was off the chain in the social sense, which in many ways articulates the morphing of liberal white racism

Which is only further illuminated at how well they are handling the eugenics phenomena and reality. The final scene was haunting

Also look at lil nurse Elkins seducing ol boy. Nice. THACKERAY gunna lose his shit when he see or find out.

Lastly, I need Barrow to get knifed, but he look like a character here for the long hall

So who you got on starting the fire? I think the son is involved. No coincide that he asked old girl to meet him there and right after the previous conversation. He's probably the one involved in the scandal not his Pops.

Barrow isn't that thorough...I don't think he did it to keep his embezzlement schemes up although it's spun to appear that way.

I need Gallenger to lose hard. He's feeling himself too much right now. The sad thing is he may never get his due because of the day and age he's in. Actually, I don't know who I hate more - Gallenger or Barrow. At least with Barrow, I know the prostitute will bleed him dry.

And Alge should've known better. They'll never chose him over another white man. And now his eye is fucked up all over again. My family had a Florida Evans moment over this.

Lucy brought the pain! That whole scene was so....clinical. There was no emotion, no empathy. I told my husband I knew she was going to do something to torture him, but I thought it would be over the course a few months.

As for the fire, I originally thought the son did it, but to try and KILL your people over it, especially when their relationship seemed pretty amicable, seems like a stretch. He was empathetic enough not to profit from the tunnel accident, but that could've been because he was invested in it's success. I don't know. I think (hope?) it's Barrow.

I knew he wouldn't lose the hearing but there's no way he dumps his wife in the home, shacks up with her sister, neuters kids, jacks up Algeron's eye and walks off Scott free.

Btw did he know to go after his eye? Did he say something to his woman about it after? I wasn't sure if I heard that properly.

I think I heard him say 'he didn't know I knew'. Then sister slut said 'did you go for his eye?'

I'm getting mad all over again.

I saw that theory mentioned elsewhere and thought it would be a fitting turn for him. They did have sex in episode 7 or 8.

I can't even watch it again. My boy missed it and wanted to watch it with me and I said HELL NO, I can't do it.

Gallanger is so fucked up. I can't deal with him at all. And the crazy part is, after the show is over and they do the little cast interviews, the man who plays Gallanger seems so happy and jovial.

Barrow did his wife so dirty. He's so stupid. But he will get what he deserves but it doesn't feel like it will happen quick enough. he needs to get out of the paint now.

I don't know who started the fire but it played out perfectly in that episode. Because you have the son who seems stressed, who wanted more money to do other things but his father said no, and then he tells them to meet him at the hospital. Then you have Barrow who wanted to slow down the building then said I will find a way. It literally could be either of them. sheesh.

But man Algernon...he said in an interview before that his eye wouldn't get better, that someone would make it worst before the season was over. As soon as I saw him outside rolling up his sleeves I knew what would happen. Why does he keep fighting when he's not that good at it? Gallanger had him on height and reach. Algernon should have been ready to go before he even walked out. But damn. so stressful.

Barrow straight up sold the house and told her to be out by the end of the week, didn't give a damn about his kids. If nothing else, how is he gonna play the kids.

His wife did nothing to him but he was playing her because he got turned out by a hoe (with all due respect) who only wants his money and is gonna bounce when that dries up. I CAN NOT WAIT.

TBH Algie getting dropped like that was some sucka shit cause he's been hit way worse than that in the first season just to get back up. But I'll allow it for the story.

but I only recall one fight that he won (with old dude in his building), the others seemed evenly matched or he lost (hence his eye getting messed up). I get that he was mad but I guess it's moreso your eye is messed up from fighting, why risk being punched in the face again?

dude snuck him, he let his guard down and it was over. the season finale is friday so i guess we will see how this plays out.

Elkins turn has been fantastic and subversive. Her knowing her worth to men and getting what she wants is a nice inversion of virgin/whore dichotomy. Her scene with the Asian pimp... YO! also Eve Hewson, the actress is fine as hell

Watching Bertie and his pop, while he performed the surgery to try and save his mom, was fuckin heart breaking. I can't imagine even doing that, especially having my own dad die of cancer, if I had the medical knowledge, I wonder if I would I even try. intense moment.

The scene of all the couples and the ball, what a masterful piece of cinema, the camera work was narcotic... Edward's lady so bowdy. I dig that their are Black characters in a period piece no sniveling at white folks feet.

Cleary and Harriet's scene's chemistry are so memorable. It sucks that she stays fronting on him. When he went for the kiss and she was like FOH, felt bad for dude

What a nice way to frame both Thackery and Cornelia's Pop's past. So many levels to white male fuckery and industry merging with science...

and the Eugenics aspect of the narrative(s). They are handling it so well. I hate they let Gallinger get one up on my man edwards tho

lastly, Cornelia offing herself... i get it but also didn't. Theck gunna be a fucn mess

this the best shit on TV, not named Fargo

But this episode seemed so final now that everyone has gone their separate ways

A few thoughts:

- I know people complained about the scenes with Cleary and Rose, but damn if I didn't see that revelation coming.

- Unfortunately, I was wrong about Henry. I was hoping they would somehow pin it all on Barrow, but oh well. Was that smallpox on his hands? And Cornelia played her cards all wrong. Just drop a few nuggets to the police and cautiously go on about your business.

- How'd they just let Thackery bleed out like that without jumping in to try and save him? A room full of doctors and no one moved.

- Linking Gallinger to Nazi Germany was well played. And like I thought, no repercussions...just a promotion and more money for his actions.

*initially I thought that was a syphillis rash on Barrow, but it was radiation poisoning but he's an idiot. He signed over everything to "his girl". But it is "nice" to know it wasn't him...I was conflicted.

*to that point I think we all knew it was Henry because (obviously) he told them to meet him in the hospital. And he was so unrepentant about it. I had an idea that he was the one hustling the docks because in one episode he had NO money at all to invest in the subway and then all of a sudden he's like "got it."

*thackery...lord thackery. i like that they didn't explicitly say he died for the sake of a third season (if they should get one). they did try to stop him and when they were like "you're cutting too close to here, let us help" he kept telling them to get back and leave him alone. it was such a bad idea and everyone just sat there watching him die.

*I don' tthink Cordelia should have just let also. I swore her brother was going to push her. Why didn't she just go with her husband like she planned? (well she never liked him so that's that).

DID NOT SEE THE CLEARY THING EITHER. When I heard that I was like OMG. That was so shady so underhanded. Damn.
But yeah this was good. but they closed it up well.

that last scene was definitely about psychology. the whole season was hovering around the idea that early medacine thought addiction could only be cured with medicine and lobotomies.
