What is Rick and Morty? On the surface it’s a nod towards Back to The Future, with a crazy scientist and his protégé/son figure going on adventures..like a more family version of Futurama. The jokes are less about modern pop culture then more about popular sci-fi tropes (inception, planet of the apes, various time travel episodes etc) and it's a genuinely funny show and a mix of what you would have found on Fox's Animation domination with dash of the wierdness of Adult Swim.
That above would make it a good show to pass the time when you're bored. What makes it great though is what's just right under the hood. They play with the concepts of other dimensions/timelines and how if multiple versions of everything exist...ultimately how disposable you are. Characters pop in and kill innocent versions of themselves to the horror of other characters, etc. Its dark metaphysical stuff, wrapped in a sunday night cartoon. Its True Detective Season 1 if Mcconaughey and harrelson was a nihilistic drunk genius and his nebish good hearted nephew hoping to find some sense of morality in a fucked up universe.
The first season started off solid; first episode was OK then everything else afterwards knocked it out of the park. The second season just started and it hasn't lost a beat.

it's funny as all hell, but like you said, there's some seriously dark, psychologically twisted shit in there. in the first season, the quality of the writing constantly surprised me.

The fact the pet dog wanted to get called Snowball despite the fact he fought so hard to get dignity in that robot suit is hard to top. And the fact he said his prior name was his slave name is just as funny to me.

After Rick shoots Jerry's "brother", he's the only one left that could be a parasite if we're assuming the core five family members were never parasites.
The reason we see him in the intro is because he implanted the fake memories in everyone's head that he had been there all the time.
The reason he seemingly gets shot at the end is because the last few minutes of the show is all a fake memory he implanted. Remember, they can implant memories where they're in dire situations (stuck in the elevator, trapped by Nazis, etc.) as long as they have a happy ending. Him forgiving her and not pressing charges is the happy ending for that situation.
At least, that's what I think.
I've seen online where people think it's all just a dream Rick had after the previous episode

i was happy to roll with the fact he was just there as a separate entity, but...that would be even cooler. wonder if he's gonna be incorporated into the rest of the season too.
Morty had my favorite moment of the episode though:
"Get your shit together. Get it all together and put it in a backpack, all your shit, so it's together. And if you gotta take it somewhere, take it somewhere, you know? Take it to the shit store and sell it, or-or put it in a shit museum, I don't care what you do. You just gotta get it together. Get your shit together."

even for other Adult Swim shows. I was surprised when I saw his name at the end of the credits since I've heard Rogan mention Grizzly Man on his podcast in the past and only know of his name through that, so I looked up his imdb when the show was over. I was surprised when looking through his credits. Appears he doesn't take himself as seriously as one would assume.
I have to admit I'm a bit scared in a sense to watch Grizzly Man because of how totally odd it sounds from the times Rogan has mentioned it.

throughout some of those fake TV spots took me out of the episode a little bit since it removed some of the absurdity for the spots. The surgery storyline was pretty creative though. I wonder how long it takes for the writers to have to find new ways to make fun of the marriage for each episode.

I had no clue at all that was the season finale. Pretty mean cliffhanger if the show will indeed take over a year and change to come back. Hopefully the Blu-ray/DVD will be packed with a decent amount of extras so the hiatus won't be as painful.
So I guess that character at the end of the credits wasn't a parasite after all, uh?

since it looks like their earth (or should I say this version of earth since they fucked up the original timeline Earth last season) is now fully integrated with alien overlords, etc.
While there's a thousand ways they can reset Rick to be back to the same old, they can't really walk back a major alien invasion, lol.

Cot damn, helluva show. Easily moves into one of my favorite shows ever, animated or not. So many flashbacks of Community, it feels good to get that Harmon blend of the absurd, the warmth and the emotional investment back in one show.
