But the movie had so, so, so, so so precious little substance. I require a little bit more from movies I spend a couple hours watching, with few exceptions. It's a personal thing I guess.

They built up every character and the world in which they lived.

Guess "substance" is a personal thing too.

In that case...yea, I do think substance can be subjective depending on what kind of substance you're looking for. I guess John Wick just isn't my kind of movie. The dialogue was just so flat, IMO. I compare it to a movie like Payback; both have that element of revenge and mafia-related content and all of that. But the dialogue in Payback was just so, so, so far superior and the storyline was more well fleshed out. To me, John Wick just seemed like a movie where they designed the fight scenes for weeks and spent like an hour on the dialogue.

I definitely am not as crazy about it as some folks were (the third act leaves a lot to be desired) but they created an excellent playground to play in. I have high hopes for the sequel

also, apologies for being dickish in my original post.

Word. Yea the concept was interesting I just didn't love the execution personally, outside of the fight scenes.

All this said tho I always root for Keanu Reeves given what we know about how he treats people/his life so honestly I'll probably support him in some way with the sequel. Just out of principle.

Didn't see that coming.

It's a great trailer but the violence in the first one was somehow just too much for me so I might be passing on this since it looks the same. But, that's how you make a trailer.

Hollywood's never done a great job with creating a deep bench of recognizable black actors. I can't imagine Common gets THAT much and most times the thinking it to get recognizable actors in there over a fresh face or a a vet actor that people don't know.

In response to Reply # 38

despite how over the top it is, it's one of the few action movies that doesn't take an abstract approach to its gun violence. John Wick is the most dangerous assassin of all time, and he proves it over and over by going for the head. Unlike other movies where a really hard punch or a shot in the shoulder counts as a 'kill', Wick will hit you in the shoulder then run up on you and get you in the head as he's spinning around to get another guy in the head.

Not only was the choreography really excellent throughout John Wick, it was that sense of "he's really about his business" that made the character such an instant cult hit.

I basically said this wasn't for me. Although LOL that it's John Wick and then vanilla family films. No in between at all.

As for the 70's and 80's, I don't think they necessarily compare. I don't recall a lot of violence similar to John Wick (although I didn't watch a lot of the Rambo type flicks besides First Blood, which I really liked.)

The headshot, double tap king continues his reign. In your average action movie plenty of people get shot, some may even die. In John Wick world...your ass gets fucking murdered.

Common's underacting and 2002 hip-hip budweiser soundtrack for the trailer can't hold back this awesomeness!

Badass female assassin, check.
Morpheus crack jokes, check.
Rooms full of dudes getting massacred, check.
Keanu all bloodied up talking about he gonna kill everyone and their grandma, check.

PUT IT IN MY VEINS NOW.

Is it better than the first? I dunno. I wanna see it again before I declare that shit. But, this shit rules. Hard. It does even more world building than the first did without sacrificing the awesome action we all know and love. And holy fuck do they deliver on the action nigga.

But, I got a feeling this is gonna get flak from some people.

If you really dug the weird bits of mythology in the first John Wick, you'll prefer John Wick Chapter 2. If not, one will be your jam.

While people were going at Soulhonkey above I get it; Even the most violent action movies tend to gloss over the killshots of the nameless henchmen with the exception of a few money shots. EVERY kill Wick does is just violent as shit..dude's making sure you have a closed casket funeral.

I'd like a little more exposition but that's me and it's really no big deal. In fact the overall lack of apelli g things out is a strength here.

There's something great about being dropped into this world and just watching everyone go at it.

I'd love a Netflix or Amazon series that digs into lower end characters and fleshed out the history and add some depth to this world. See how, say, their media operates.

That said there is something to be said about being left wanting more and they absolutely nailed it here. No frills, no fluff, no filler. Just point a-b-c and oh yeah, absolutely relentless violence.

It's a live action video game and I mean that in the best way possible.

Loved how they expanded the mythology even though it was a tad inconsistent

(I.e. In the first film, Perkins breaks the rules and gets murked, JW does it and just gets banished)

Missing a bit of the intimacy of the first, but top notch action pieces and choreography.

Also loved how they ended it. Not everything tied up in a bow, no obvious way out of his predicament, no resources and in a situation where his famed will will be tested to the limits in the presumed sequel.

If the third movie delivers, instantly in the canon of great action franchises.

*Spoilers*

Perkins was egregious as fuck.

Perkins tried to kill Wick in the hotel, he spared her life, and she killed ANOTHER Patron just asked to watch over her just to get a head start on finding Wick again. I rewatched the OG this week and got re-mad again at her, LOL.

If she didn't murk old boy she wouldda got just excommunicated just like Wick imho. Cause think about it...why would she have taken the hit on Wick if it meant certain death on her. Her thing was that she got spared, and STILL fucked up again. She had to go. Even when Winston killed her the first thing he said was that her membership was revoked, THEN he had her killed.

Winston's favor to Wick was just the hour head start.

>Missing a bit of the intimacy of the first, but top notch

My thing was that without the motivation this time wasn't as strong as the cancer death of the wife into the death of the puppy. You felt why dude had to rain down death. Here, it seemed a bit generic 'you owe me' and it didn't help that the Italian dude was a complete asshole on screen...if it was a blood debt to Winston on an alternate storyline I would have felt it more. That said, I was more then satisfied with the movie as is.

I mean true, but Wick still blew a member of the High Table's brains out right in front of Winston. Seems like that would be worthy of the instant death that Perkins got too

I'm not THAT mad at it, but dude got off comparatively light. Bounty and all not withstanding.

And at the end of the day, he is the hero of the story. So he got the Hero's Leeway. Not that mad at it. Like I said, just a tad inconsistent, but not enough to break the movie or the mythology.

Agreed. That's the intimacy I was talking about. It was a personal thing in the first film, and obligatory in the second.

Still only equals a very slight drop off from the first. I'd rank it a notch below the first, and that might actually improve with time.

I thought the guy banished him AND called in a hit on him, hence the running at the end of the flick. I thought that was why he said you have a one hour head start or whatever.
