"Spiderman: Homecoming. July 7, 2017."

Updated with announced title and release date.

Original post:

Obviously going with Peter Parker, as most of us predicted.

As I said on Twitter, I don't know if that kid from The Way Way Back can pull off being Spider-Man... but he would be a really awesome Peter Parker. I like Asa Butterfield too, he's probably the most well-rounded and safest of the candidates-- diverse genre actor who has action movie cred. Not really into the Amir Blumenfeld looking motherfucker from Fault in Our Stars.

http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/markcassidycbm/news/?a=119241

It seems Collider's Steve Weintraub was spot on when he reported that Marvel and Sony were close to settling on a new Spider-Man to replace Andrew Garfield in the MCU, and The Wrap has now revealed the names on the shortlist. According to them, Nat Wolff (The Fault In Our Stars), Asa Butterfield (Hugo, Ender's Game), Tom Holland (The Impossible), Timothee Chalamet (Interstellar) and Liam James (The Way Way Back) are all in the running to land the coveted role.

The site adds that none of these young actors have actually tested yet, but that they are "strong contenders who are definitely in the mix as of right now". It has also been confirmed that the plan is to introduce Spidey in Captain America: Civil War, and the role will have to be cast by June when the actor will be needed on set.

Apparently these aren't the only thesps in the running, so it may not necessarily be one of the above 5 that lands the role, but if it were, which one would you most like to see as the new Wall Crawler? Drew Goddard is still frontrunner to helm the solo Spidey flick, which is set to hit theaters July 28, 2017.

i'd have been fine with either of the two previous spidies continuing in the MCU over seeing another reboot or another young, new actor. i don't need peter parker the high school or even college student as the sole live-action version of the character on screen, but then i'm not in the target demographic (that age or younger) at this point either.

... then I'd be extremely surprised if they go origin story again.

Then again, it *is* still technically up to Sony what happens in their movie, and they aren't to be trusted for obvious reasons. At least we know Marvel's got say in the initial establishment of the character, which is a great start.

yeah, it bodes well, i just hope peter parker isn't clumsily introduced pre-powers, setting up the next reboot or a soft origin story telling in cap 3. that's my problem with spidey only getting 2 or 3 movies and done, there isn't enough time to get past the origin story and high school and college. i'd be more pleased if they were looking at casting someone in his mid to late 20s or older. at least with MCU interaction there is more opportunity for storytelling and teamups.

That doesn't necessarily mean they're going to do the origin story... but they're definitely not going to go with post-collegiate. Not with the baby faces they're looking at casting.

as far as his comments, i thought andrew garfield did a good job as funny, pestering spidey. i'm not sure why those two movies didn't completely work. they almost seem low key after the raimi series. it's kind of a shame all talents involved in the now three reboots can't combine minds to come up with the best version.

like, is he just permanently an awkward high school adolescent throughout the comics or does he ever grow up into, like, some genius scientist or something where different storylines can be explored? i'm asking because i think every person on planet earth is sick of this version of spider-man.

When I stopped reading around the mid-90s, he was married to Mary Jane and living a very 30-something lifestyle. That was always Peter Parker to me. Comfortably in adulthood and journalism and juggling the adult life with the superhero life.

Some Tech Asshole Pitched Sony On Turning Spider-Man Into an EDM Bro

by Jordan Sargent

Amy Pascal made some mistakes. Nobody is going to dispute that. But here’s at least one good decision she made: turning down some aging tech schmuck’s pitch to turn Spider-Man into an EDM-loving, Tough Mudder-participating, humblebragging shithead.

In November 2013, as spotted by a Twitter user named @DukeLovesYou, Pascal and Sony Pictures CEO Michael Lynton received an email from Nick Shore, an ex-MTV executive who now helps run a new Sony venture called Astronauts Wanted: No Experience Necessary, which aims to help Sony reach millennials via Vine or whatever.

So, what happens when a middle-aged one-time television executive tries to figure out what appeals to teens? Why, how about making Spider-Man really into working out and Skrillex, plus having “him” create a “very buzzworthy and cool” Snapchat “circle”?:

Spidey thought

Hey Amy - just a couple of rando thoughts from 35,000 LAX-JFK:

- A rising trend we see with Millennials are the really extreme forms of experiential exercise like Tough Mudder (a sort of filthy triathalon), the Color Run and even things like Hot Power Yoga, veganism etc. Millennials will often post “N.B.D.” on their social media after doing it , as in No Big Deal, also known as the “humble brag”.....wondering if Spidey could get into that in some way....he’s super athletic, bendy, strong, intense....and it’s all NBD to him, of course.

- EDM (electronic dance music) is the defining music for Millennials. Wondering if there’s an EDM angle somewhere with Spidey? His movements are beautiful, would be awesome with a killer DJ behind it

- Snapchat just launched a “story” functionality, which is sort of “day in the life of me” told in a series of snapchats that expire after 24 hours. It has a very VIP quality about it, since invitation only. Getting invited into Spidey’s Snapchat circle would be huge, and very buzzworthy and cool.

This entire email is a great argument for moving up the retirement age to 35.

but it's pretty clear they want 15-year-old original-recipe Peter Parker, and a kid who could convincingly play such for a while.

Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios Find Their 'Spider-Man' Star and Director
Tom Holland Cast as the Web-Slinger, Jon Watts to Direct the Next Spider-Man Adventure,

Published
Jun 23, 2015
Updated
Jun 23, 2015

Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios are proud to announce that after a full worldwide casting search, Tom Holland will play Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the next Spider-Man film, in theaters in IMAX and 3D on July 28, 2017. The film will be directed by Jon Watts, director of "Cop Car," the upcoming thriller that made its debut earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival.

Marvel and Sony Pictures, and producers Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal conducted an extensive search for both the actor and the director. The studios and producers were impressed by Holland’s performances in "The Impossible," “Wolf Hall,” and the upcoming "In the Heart of the Sea," and by a series of complex screen tests. Following Marvel’s tradition of working with the brightest next wave of directors, Watts also went through multiple meetings with Feige, Pascal, and the studio, before winning the job.

Commenting on the announcement, Tom Rothman, Sony Pictures Motion Pictures Group Chairman, said, “It’s a big day here at Sony. Kevin, Amy and their teams have done an incredible job. The Marvel process is very thorough, and that’s why their results are so outstanding. I’m confident Spider-Man will be no exception. I’ve worked with a number of up-and-coming directors who have gone on to be superstars and believe that Jon is just such an outstanding talent. For Spidey himself, we saw many terrific young actors, but Tom’s screen tests were special. All in all, we are off to a roaring start.”

Feige commented, “As with James Gunn, Joss Whedon, and the Russo brothers, we love finding new and exciting voices to bring these characters to life. We spent a lot of time with Jon and find his take and work inspiring.”

Pascal added, “Sony, Marvel, Kevin and I all knew that for Peter Parker, we had to find a vibrant, talented young actor capable of embodying one of the most well-known characters in the world. With Tom, we’ve found the perfect actor to bring Spider-Man’s story into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”

Sony Pictures will finance and release worldwide the next installment of the $4 billion Spider-Man franchise on July 28, 2017, in a film co-produced by Kevin Feige and his expert team at Marvel and Amy Pascal, who oversaw the franchise launch for the studio 13 years ago. Together, they will collaborate on a new creative direction for the Web-Slinger.

Spider-Man, embraced all over the world, is the most successful franchise in the history of Sony Pictures, with the five films having taken in more than $4 billion worldwide.

we already knew what direction they were going in with the shortlist, but the sting from a wasted golden opportunity to inject some freshness into Spidey through the casting (freshness that the studios have, ostensibly, been looking for) still smarts.

I would've been amped had they done something—anything—different with the character. as it stands, I'm not excited about more Spidey on film at all. at all.

Marisa Tomei to Play Aunt May in New ‘Spider-Man’ Movie (EXCLUSIVE)
JULY 8, 2015 | 11:02AM PT
Justin Kroll
Film Reporter

Now that Marvel and Sony have found their Peter Parker, the focus has turned to the aunt who raised him.

Sources tell Variety that Marisa Tomei is the choice to play Aunt May in the next installment of the “Spider-Man” franchise.

Sony and Marvel had no comment on the casting.

While insiders could not say where things stood in the deal-making process, they said an offer was made late last week for the Oscar-winning actress to join Tom Holland, who was recently tapped to play the webslinging superhero.

Marvel and Sony recently hand-picked Holland to play Spider-Man after months of meetings and screen tests with eager young actors, in addition to selecting “Cop Car” helmer Jon Watts to direct the pic.

The studios are still in the process of finding a writer to join Watts in the screenwriting process, but insiders explained that the top brass also wanted to lock down other actors who would appear in multiple films so schedules could be worked out before shooting commences next year.

Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal will produce the pic, and though Holland is expected to first appear in “Captain America: Civil War” in a cameo appearance as Parker, it seems more likely that Tomei will not appear until the first “Spider-Man” film bows on July 28, 2017.

The job marks a new direction for Tomei, who generally sticks to dramas like “The Ides of March” and “The Wrestler,” or romantic comedies like “Crazy Stupid Love” and “My Cousin Vinny” (which landed her an Oscar), rather than studio tentpoles.

She can be seen next in “Trainwreck” alongside Amy Schumer and is currently filming “The Big Short” with Christian Bale and Ryan Gosling. Tomei will also have a recurring role in the second season of Fox’s hit “Empire.” She is repped by CAA and Untitled Entertainment.

She's kind of a punchline due to her Cousin Vinny role but she's got real deal chops. Hopefully we'll get to see a more realistic portrayal of Aunt May than the antiquated milk and cookies archetypes we've more or less gotten thus far. Plus, she can add a layer of New York to the character we haven't really seen. I like it.

I'm still pissed that Asa got passed on but maybe they can cast him in something else somewhere down the line.

And I'm not even a huge Spider-Man fan. I love the potential this has at setting up multiple Spider-Man sub-franchises (i.e. Miles Morales, Venom, Sinister Six, Spider-Gwen, whatever) as long as Marvel has their hand in the cookie jar.

I mean, with a Carnage rumor... We could legit get a good, new Venom AND Carnage at some point on the big screen?

And casting Abraham Attah... For. The. Win. I've been singing his praises since Beasts of No Nation, that kid is super talented. I really hope that's the choice to move forward with Miles, that'd be suhweet.

Raimi I felt got Peter right and the costume right, but the organic webs always bothered me. The shit talking Spidey was weak as fuck in those films. Also, re-watching the first two recently (the first especially) had so much goofy shit in it.

Those other two films got the shit talking right and the web shooters, but everything else wrong sans the costume in ASM2 which looked like comic Spider-Man.

the stuff I like is the stuff I haven't seen before and don't know about - Tomei as a younger Aunt May, Peter interacting with his classmates while being a hero at the same time, the Stark element. I'm there day one.

Keaton and Bokeem as bad guys (plus Logan Marshall-Green)? Not sure who Woodbine is playing but the Vulture toy at least looks cool. Don't really care about the Iron Man suit paint job and the sweatpant Spidey is supposed to look goofy. Really hoping they get this one right.

http://io9.gizmodo.com/looks-like-tony-stark-has-yet-another-new-suit-in-spide-1792148863?rev=1486597370193&utm_campaign=socialflow_io9_twitter&utm_source=io9_twitter&utm_medium=socialflow

EDIT: Although I'm probably late on this. Avoiding trailers/ads for this so maybe they've already shown what he'll look like.

civil war ended with him being considered a terrorist on the run by the government. i know marvel doesn't care much about stakes and consequences.. but this doesn't make sense.

i want this to be good, new spidey was the best part of civil war, but these trailers didn't excite me much and i hate the fact that stark is in this for more than a cameo.

I doubt this will be better than Spiderman 2.

yeah, I agree. Doc Ock was one of the best Marvel villains all time and 2 was def the best of the Spidey's so far.

Spiderman 2

Spiderman 1
Amazing Spiderman

Amazing Spiderman 2

Spiderman 3

Something like that I suppose. I think I like the Toby Maguire 1st slightly better than Garfield's 1st

You had the potential for a solid story in the third Spiderman with him serving as the surprising emotional core except they buried that good film with venom and green goblin bullshit.

the 1st one was better even. Dafoe as Goblin >>>>> Molina's Doc Ock

Shit was corny and suffered from the same bullshit that plagued Raimi's trilogy.

He went out of his way to make a sympathetic bad guy that wasn't really bad, just put in a bad situation. His tentacles talked to him and controlled his brain? Really?

That's some fuck shit.

And then the self sacrifice bullshit for redemption?

And somehow Peter just happened to be connected to him personally. Again.

And a super villain was made by Oscorp. Again.

Peter takes his mask off a million times again.

It was some wash rinse repeat shit from the first one.

Every damn villain in that movie was never just a crazy af bad guy, just conflicted, wrong place wrong time cats, or victims in some way, outside of the ONE guy that really wasn't an all out villain, Venom.

There was no creativity with the villains and the shit was played out by the 2nd flick.

I can't for the life of me understand why people still like this movie.

Molina was real good in Spidey 2.

But I'll still argue Spider-Man nailed the Final Fight sequence in a way no other comic movie has come close to other than Civil War (I didn't see Winter Soldier, was that a good climax too?) and maybe Logan.

I checked out of that comment once I read that it was a problem that someone connected to Peter turned out to be a bad guy. The connection between Peter and Ock is one of the things I love most about that movie-- Molina crushes the performance, and when he realizes at the end that it's Peter and hits the "gifted but lazy" callback, I smiled so fucking hard in the theaters and still do.

I also vehemently disagree with the read that the tentacles fully control him. He ultimately makes the choices because he's distraught over the death of his wife and the possible failure of his life's work. They help convince him what to do, but he's down with it. That's why the ending works as well as it does-- it finishes the arc. "Tentacles kill people without his consent ---> he works with the tentacles to kill more ---> he takes control of the tentacles to save the city."

It's definitely melodramatic, but I have absolutely no problem with well-executed melodrama.

There's not a person at the table you don't like. So when Ock's wife gets murked, it's devastating. When Ock turns bad, you kind of get it. And when Peter decides to say hell with the superhero gimmick, you can't blame him. Dogg it's just pathos. These Marvel movies are good and fun, but they've never come close to SM2. SM2 >>> Dark Knight too. The GOAT superhero flick.

Already saw it in the first one.

It's too much of a coincidence that the kid that happened to become a superhero previously knew the two men that just happened to become super villains years before any of them became what they are.

Doc Ock was never that in the books and for Peter to personally know every villain that he has to face, which all happen to be the result of some fuck up at Oscorp, feels too forced.

As far as the tentacles, I never said they fully controlled him. I didn't like that they controlled him at all. It's too corny. Why can't he just be a bad guy from the jump? I don't want to see every villain in the franchise follow the same format.

The one villain that had morals was the one guy in this franchise that was flat out irredeemably bad.

You gotta be a hell of a actor/actress (or have just mastered the skill of hamming it up) to overcome a generic ass evil story...you got nothing to work with to overcome a back story we've seen/read a thousand times. Im also confused at how you mad at Doc. Ocs' tentacles talking to him but not Defoe having those dumb ass conversations to himself in the mirror? In that voice?

You're right that Spidey 2 was kinda rinse-repeat with the general villian plotline but it was superior performances across the board and imho a tighter script.

Raimi did it with Goblin, Doc Ock, and Sandman. The only flat-out irredeemable bad guy was Venom, the only one that's truly morally ambiguous, an antihero.

Following the same format over and over isn't good storytelling.

It seems plausible to me that a billionaire, while a bit egotistical, would at least mean well with his money and technological resources. If it goes wrong and he goes nuts, you end up with a villain. But Osborne means well at the onset - like a more colorful Elon Musk. Peter's a lazy science savant, it also to me seems reasonable that he's into being close to big science guys but still too lame to actually follow through on his own smarts on a daily basis.

102. "That's basically the definition of nuance and depth."
In response to Reply # 98

Portraying villains and multi-faceted human beings with motives beyond “MUST KILL SPIDERMAN!”is the definition of “depth” and “nuance”.

There’s absolutely a place for a one-note, evil just to be evil type of villain. In fact, I hope Carnage is just that. There’s also a greater place- and need- for multi-faceted bad guys who have relatable, if not entirely understandable, motives. YES, it’s generally better storytelling to give people relatable back story and motivation. That’s inarguable as a general rule of thumb, and yes, there are outlier. Ledger’s Joker, for example, shined with a singular focus.

There’s zero argument, absolutely nothing to stand on if the argument is that Ock, Goblin(s) and Sandman are characters that lack depth and nuance. If you have an objective argument as to why either of these characters lacked depth or nuance, I’d love to hear it.

You might not like the net effect of Ock’s relationship with his arms, but you certainly haven’t offered anything substantial for why that was problematic. In fact, you said they controlled him, which isn’t the case at all. There’s a dynamic relationship between Ock and his arms. You might not like it, but that’s an inarguable nuance. That’s inarguable character depth.

Sandman was just trying to live. He didn’t even really want to hurt Spider-Man or anyone else

As far as repeating the same formula, I don’t see that at all. The presentation of villains with layered, relatable human motivation is “repeating the same formula” in much the same way as “guy has powers and wears a costume” is “repeating the same formula”. Each character had unique motivations to hate Spider-Man, unique motivations for turning to crime, and a unique relationship to Peter.

If you don’t like the films that’s fine, but saying that “Changing every villain to be sympathetic is not nuance or depth” is just plain factually incorrect.

I personally don't think SM1 is that good, but SM2 was different in showing Peter coming to terms with who he his and what he needs to be. That's something that the first film didn;t do cause it was about a teen discovering his super abilities and deciding to use them for the greater good.

Not to mention I think the action scenes are all timers and the character drama in the film is just as good as any Oscar film.

In response to Reply # 102

There are better ways to do it though.

Dafoe's Goblin and Doc Ock had too many similarities in their development and how they relate to Peter that it felt lazy and forced to me. It was too deliberate, it lacked authenticity. Making each villain redeemable and just "good guys in bad situations", not entirely responsible for their all of their actions, wasn't something I wanted to see from established Spider-man villains. Raimi went out of his way to do this for each one with the exception of Venom, who would have been the best candidate for that treatment according to his comic book backstory.

It's entirely possible to have villains that have understandable motivations for their villainous behavior and still be flat out bad, without being one note characters lacking depth. Loki, Aldrich Killian, Ra's al Guhl for example.

Again, with the tentacles, the issue I have is that it gives him an out, he's not fully responsible for his evil. Similar idea with Norman Osborn and the gas making him nuts (although he was more of a dick than Ock). While I give you that it qualifies as nuance, I had already seen a similar situation in the first movie. To me he was just too sympathetic when he could have been a crazy asshole and still had depth.

For what its worth, I really enjoyed the movies when they came out, mostly because I was hype to see these characters in a big tentpole film. Thinking back on them now, they just don't hold up as well. I did watch some of SM1 on tv last night, and SM2 was probably better.

I just would have liked to have seen Raimi not make 4 of his 5 villains so empathetic.

Granted, he's basically an archetype of what dude hates about the first trilogy, but its clear after reading his further thoughts on them that he's more bothered by the consistent beating of that same drum over multiple films.

Also, this connection is more happenstance with a degree of separation.

Plus it's a new series with broader implications. He may be more open to this.

I did roll my eyes and laugh a bit regarding the villain.

I didn't care at all for the "coincidence" obviously, although I didn't have a problem with him being a sympathetic character in this instance.

Now if we see the same situation in the sequel I will have a problem.

Besides that I didn't like the suit being as high-tech as it was, I know Peter got the Iron Spider suit from Tony in the comics and could do a lot of that stuff but they should have saved a lot of that stuff for when he gets an upgraded costume *minor spoiler* (the guy in the chair hacking it like that was a little ridiculous). I would have liked to see Spidey be more traditional Spidey, at least to start, and not be so advanced so quick.

Vulture was cool overall, action was good, dialogue was good, the HS was much better here than in previous films, better dialogue and humor, and it didn't have any cringe-worthy moments like the predecessors either.

The final scene I didn't like but I'm willing to see where it goes. I feel like it will have to be addressed in some kind of way before we get to the next solo film.

Gwen's death was probably the best thing about it. You could easily have made SM3 better by dropping Venom completely (which would have eliminated emo Pete and gave us more time to spend on Sandman, who I think was written and portrayed pretty well). What to do to make ASM2 a better movie? Not even sure. The rush to cram as much into one movie to set up a universe of its own didn't work at all here

In response to Reply # 106

It came out during a particularly stressful/followed by elated time in life (possibly negative to overly joyous obgyn visits) so seeing it right after will forever attach to it nostalgia of a great overall day, although I'm willing to give it a more critical relook, even though i've seen it a few times.

Its biggest flaw was its ambition. 2 out of 3 villains could have worked, but 3 was too much. most everyone hated emo peter, but his assholish nature i think worked well in that it seemed "off," like it was intentionally awkward, which made sense from what we knew of peter parker being such a good soul.

beyond that, the opening fight scene, which he did in plain clothes no less, had to be one of the top fight sequences in all of the spider man movies.

cheesy ass scenes notwithstanding, harry osborne as a deliberate asshole intent on ruining peter's life was a good look, except barnard sat on the fucking truth way too damn long. they had another good fight scene when peter had the venom, so hard to throwaway harry.

problem is, the way spider man 2 ended, a showdown between harry and peter was inevitable, so you either have a goblin/venom film, or a goblin/sandman and have harry knocked the fuck out or an amnesiac till the very end. there was enough tension between peter and MJ with gwen showing up. opening fight scene has to stay though.

there was definitely enough in there to make it the best of the three films. there just needed to be some trimming/reworking.

Best version of Peter by a country mile. Tom Holland is a star, for sure (though he could get pigeon holed). SM2 has some competition as the best Spiderman movie, but I can't say Homecoming is better right now. Probably the most fun Spidey movie though. Go see it so we can dissect and spoil the piss out of this great movie.

Doesn't have the emotional impact of some other better superhero movies, but it's easily one of if not the funniest ever made. No all-timer action sequences either, but again, when you love all of the characters and you're laughing the whole time, you can get past it. I had a ball.

i liked how they handled Peter as still getting used to his powers and what he can do. i liked how he was scared when he was up too high because that was new for him. also moments like him misjudging the landing an falling sometimes. little stuff like that made it very cool to watch his growth. my absolute favorite little inside moment was when he shot the webbing out in the field and it went nowhere and he had to run. that was great. i also think this movie did the best at tying in the other films without being so heavy handed about it. everything seemed to make sense and fit in well without being forced. the Vulture was a dope villain and him being an actual "vulture" and scavenging tech and equipment was really cool. Keaton played that part very well. they also had just enough Tony Stark in this movie. so glad they didn't over do it with him.

why did it start the movie apparently 8 years in the past (2012) after the battle of new york fallout? they could have done that after iron man being introduced but it was clearly 5 years later, why are they projecting spider man homecoming (especially coming after civil war) taking place in 2020?

maybe i missed something, but this part annoyed me.

In response to Reply # 123

for instance there's an MCU prequel comic called Fury's Big Week which explains that the events of Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2 and Thor all happened in the span of one week even though those films came out in 2008, 2010, 2011. so even though Avengers came out in 2012 it may not have been depicting 2012.

of course it's also very possible that they completely messed this up. or maybe they're purposely trying to retcon the timeline to fit Spider-Man in?

This is a big come up for both.

Way better than Horrible Bosses and Vacation.

And for Freaks and Geeks fans: Martin Starr's in it too.

is there something written where every superhero flick has to run 2:20 now?

comedy felt waaay forced too, especially from fat ned leeds. all the fanboy herbs in the packed theater i was in were falling over themselves in tears like they was watching def comedy jam or something.

i enjoyed looking at the sun goddesses, tho.

He's 15, so this was right up his alley. He was as giddy as I was when I saw the first Avengers. Watching him with his friends underscores how well they pulled out the high school angle and what a great idea that was. The 'reveal' literally had him at the edge of his seat.

Watching it again cemented Holland as a star to me. He played a teen pitch perfectly and stood toe to toe with RDJ (who you can tell they love working with each other) and Keaton (who was fantastic in this role). Hope he has a long career ahead of him.

b/w

So, when we got home I decided to flip through some of the old comics I had in my stash. Found this. My nerd status is intact:

im putting it out into the world
Hes Black and Mexican
We were watching the movie in a pretty empty theater
He literally held my hand and watched every moment still
didnt finish his popcorn or soda (he only gets it at the movie theater)
he is 3 and really doesn't say much
we are walking out the movie theater and asked "can I be spiderman?"
my life is now geared to get him to play Miles Morales

seen it three times since release and i've liked it a bit more each time. also love how Tony is now the elder statesman and adult guide, and how involved Iron Man, Happy and Pepper were, considering this is the trio that kicked off the whole MCU.

Like, even if it wasn't hero/villain meet face to face, any father taking his daughter to a high school dance may have done the same thing. It worked on a few different levels for me. Definitely one of my favorite scenes in the movie

Old Cynic vs. Young Idealist

Peter Parker's idea of heroism is rooted in a wide-eyed hope that would make any adult that's been around the block roll their eyes and sigh. I really like that the film takes the time to reiterate that the Vulture's motives for committing crimes aren't centered around wanton destruction but claiming some version of the American dream that he thought he deserved.
