Rebels S2 looks cool.
That 2nd teaser is awesome.
This sounds cool and covers a story mentioned in the original trilogy.

I wonder if anyone from Rebels gets a live action debut here, or if any canon character appears (Leia, R2D2, and C3PO are the only ones part of the Rebellion at this point, yes?)

I think Edwards said in one of the interviews that there wasn't any kind of magic element (Jedi) to these characters, more of a grunt war story.

I like that idea.

‘Star Wars’ Han Solo Spinoff: Actor Shortlist Revealed
JANUARY 11, 2016 | 10:00AM PT
Justin Kroll
Film Reporter

Disney and Lucasfilm are inching closer to finding their young Han Solo for the upcoming untitled “Star Wars” spinoff.

Sources tell Variety that after seeing thousands of actors, execs have cut the list down to about a dozen actors with Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Dave Franco, Jack Reynor, Scott Eastwood, Logan Lerman, “Brooklyn” star Emory Cohen and “Everybody Wants Some” actor Blake Jenner among the names making the cut.

NDAs and test deals are still being worked out, but producer Kathleen Kennedy and directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller will begin testing the new group with a decision expected in the next couple of weeks.

The film does not shoot until next January, but sources close to the situation say the reason for such an early decision has more to do with another “Star Wars” film currently shooting, rather than the untitled “Han Solo” pic. While insiders were unable to confirm, the new Solo could have a small cameo in “Rogue One: A Star Wars” before appearing in his own standalone pic.

“Rogue One” still has a month of shooting to go and is supposed to be set between “Episode III” and “Episode IV,” making this new Han Solo age appropriate for an appearance in the film. Disney and Marvel used the same strategy for their new Spider-Man by casting Tom Holland early in order for him to cameo in “Captain America: Civil War” before appearing in his own film.

With the exception of Eastwood, who’s 29, Disney and Lucasfilm seem to be zeroing in on actors between the ages of 20 to 25. The studios tested actors as young as 17 to as old as 34.

The untitled pic is set to bow on May 25, 2018.

I am excited that Vader will be in this and that James Earl Jones will be doing his voice!

Im not 100% in belief that they didn't cast him long time ago and all this is talk about short/long lists is a lie to throw people off.

If it is true they still have enough time to shoot something very small to put into the movie the way they did it with Spidey

Disney isn't stupid. They will have cameo's from people from the original story some how. Even if they show the back of Han's head in passing or mention the Falcon. Han is gonna in Rogue one in some sort of fashion. I think the presence of Vader in Rogue One will be heavy because to the casual person who doesn't watch these movies they know who the hell Darth Vader is. That recognition alone Disney will exploit and it makes sense for the story as Vader would be around and ruthless around these times. This movie is essentially leading up to the very beginning of A New Hope when Vader is pissed looking for the who stole the plans.

On one hand I agree OE is a little…. Obsessive and unendingly disdainful toward the franchise as a whole just as he is with anything Nolan or Tarantino related. But I have to say I’m in the same camp as far as seeing the wider appeal of this.

It's made to keep as many balls in the air as possible:

- Keep young kids who didn't grow up with it engaged
- Keep their parents who did grow up with it engaged
- Keep fanboys and fan fiction people engaged

To do this, you have to use shitty tributes and cameos
and have awful dialogue for no reason

You're incapable of expressing an objective opinion on the subject, so I'll either ignore you from here or indulge you with the chants of Hail Whitey, Kill The Darkies! you so desperately desire to sustain your existence.

It was MADE to be a GOOD MOVIE and HAPPENED to
achieve those other things.

Someone actually sat down, cared, wrote a GOOD script,
directed a good movie.

Force Awakens was made to keep balls in the air, and
ended up shitty

Those same elements actually tended to work pretty well in TFA, though TFA still has some issues.

The only issue at play here is that Orbit Established is a character with a dumb “all agenda, all the time!” gimmick that the guy with the login credentials for said gimmick is far too committed to for anyone to take seriously.

You’re not even a person. You’re AgendaBot, just some odd message board creation with myopically programmed AI that types half assed, contextually vacant opinions.

In response to Reply # 25

While I agree OE lets his agendas consume his posting to the point of losing credibility, he is absolutely right in this case.

CREED was a GREAT movie that happened to have some cool/ fan service moments.

But it was a great movie FIRST.

TFA was an excuse to cram as many moments and fan service in as possible. The plot is borderline senseless and the character motivations are often asinine.

You aren't wrong that CREED had those fan service elements, but the difference is they didn't take over the movie.

In comparison to Star Wars, CREED displayed great restraint.

Finally, CREED is a good movie on its own. It doesn't need what came before, nor does it require a sequel to explain sh!t away.

Could it be shitty? Sure. But a space heist film could be really great and isn't something that we've really seen much of (or at all, can't really think of one of the top of my head.)

We know so little about the film it's impossible to really say much either way.

The Star Wars universe has been ruined, in film, by
shitty mythology around the force and corny politics

Hell, a space heist in the STAR TREK universe would be
dope, because they haven't jumped ENTIRELY off the cliff

There's pretty much no way to do anything in film in the
Star Wars universe without SOME over-effort to tie it into
the existing film universe, which is going to come across
as trying too hard

I can see it now:

*Dumb Star Wars spinoff movie fight scene*

Movie goer #1:

"Hey, how the fuck did that guy learn how to
fly that star destroyer by himself?!"

Movie goer #2:

"Well, I think he's might be a 43rd second cousin
of Princess Leia, and so the force revisited him
in times of peril"

It's ruined. It's hokey and dumb.

But BOY will it make money.

Why?

Because people are lemmings.

There's not a single screen in San Diego that can handle that without a shit-ton of masking.

I think its the vibe thats different...i think thats whats great about what they are doing with the shows and these one off/side story movies. They all look and feel like Star Wars even if its a kid's show or theres less humour and more realistic violence etc.

not just the accent, but that doesn't hurt

both are strong female leads of 2 consecutive Star Wars movies after 6 Star Wars movies of none (Leia and Amidala/Padme don't count imo).

this comes out between Eps 7 and 8.. at the end of 7, Rey meets Luke and is about to learn about her past..

they kinda look alike..

they both appear to be adept in sneaking in and out of tight spaces.. both seem to have similar strengths

the timeline and age seem to be about right..

We are "hunting" for who her parents because of how many times in the movie where they keept hinting the connection to a Skywalker, but also nobody wants Kylo Ren to be the last of the Skywalker's for the future. Another redemption story (i don't think they are doing that) would be lame and basically makes all the previous movies worthless story wise that theres no balance to the force LOL Thats why I think she is a Skywalker, I think Ridley's recent comments more so hints to her just not being that interested in that part of the storyline because she knew from JJ a year ago who she really was. I think she's more excited about this new movie and where the character is going

were SOMEONE tho. They most definitely did that, and on purpose. It's not far fetched to think that she may be a Skywalker when the whole movie is based on that family. Now do i think that she may be a Skywalker...not so sure. But her background or her parents story/reasoning of why they left her alone or in someone's care will have significance to the over all story of these 3 new chapters.

So i think all the theories whether ridiculous or logical....are all warranted. People can complain about it all they want but Disney low key loves that its even a discussion. We are talking about a movie that is more than a year away from dropping.

The galaxy is large as heck. In the main saga films It makes sense that there are characters in all trilogies who are part of the Skywalker family, because the main saga IS really the story of the Skywalker family. But for these anthology films it should be an opportunity to expand the universe, so I really hope we aren't getting a ton of "wink, wink" character cameos and family links to other characters in the main saga.

63. "That’s Probably Not Rey’s Mom In The STAR WARS: ROGUE ONE Trailer"
In response to Reply # 54

http://birthmoviesdeath.com/2016/04/07/thats-probably-not-reys-mom-in-the-star-wars-rogue-one-trailer

Although I get why you might think it is.

The trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is pretty exciting. The images in that trailer promise something new, something unlike the previous seven Star Wars films. This is a movie that isn't beholden to the aesthetic choices made in 1977, although it does seem to be basically honoring them. It's something that is recognizably Star Wars but isn't just a rehash of what came before.

But the spectre of the seven films in the Star Wars saga does hang over the movie anyway, and that's part of the education campaign Disney and Lucasfilm have in front of them. You can see that spectre in the form of a question that popped up on social media immediately after the trailer hit:

"Is that Rey's mom?"

The new heroine in the Star Wars universe is named Jyn Erso, and she's almost certainly not connected to Rey in any fashion. But there are two things that make it reasonable that some folks might think otherwise. One is the fact that the two lead actresses don't look all that dissimilar and the other is that Star Wars, historically, has one small-ass universe.

As we are good, educated and tasteful nerds we know that Daisy Ridley plays Rey and that Felicity Jones plays Jyn, but we are in the minority. The reality is that neither of these actresses are particularly well known (in the United States at least) and so their similarities - British brunettes with scrappy demeanors and big eyes - in back-to-back Star Wars films could easily confuse a general audience. I'm not even sure that the general audience would walk away from that Rogue One trailer understanding that the movie is a prequel; they're certainly not prepared for the fact that there will be a new Star Wars film every single year, and that the alternating films will have nothing to do with each other.

So you can forgive them for not quite grasping that. There are those who do grasp it - who have followed the Star Wars Anthology as it morphed into A Star Wars Story (a change clearly made because someone behind the scenes, already facing the task of explaining to audiences that these films are anthology films, didn't want to have to also explain what the fuck the word anthology means) - and those are the people who are drawing a familial connection between Rey and Jyn, and they're drawing that connection because seven Star Wars movies have told them that's what they should do.

You can't really blame people for looking at the history of the franchise, which is littered with surprise family relations and 'shocking' character reveals (I guess if you watched the Prequels first the whole Palpatine thing could have been a stunner to you), and assuming that sort of thing will continue in the Star Wars Story films. And you can especially understand where they're coming from when you realize that the main talking point in the months since The Force Awakens came out has been "Who are Rey's parents?" Of course people are on the lookout for any answers to this question, and the normal human desire to find patterns in chaos - mixed with the fact that, again, these two women don't look entirely dissimilar - makes this a kind reasonable thought.

But again, it all comes down to the education that Disney and Lucasfilm need to pull off in the coming months. I don't know hard and fast what, if any, relationship Jyn Erso has to the main Star Wars films but if I were setting up an anthology series that was intended to go beyond and away from the core films I wouldn't launch the whole thing by answering a mysterious question from the main series. I would want my launch film to be tangentially related to the main series - to, as Rogue One does, tell an untold side tale - but not be truly consequentila to anything going on in the main series today.

And let's be honest, if I'm working at Lucasfilm I understand just how small the Star Wars universe is right now. I'd be doing my damndest to break out of that, and Rogue One makes for the perfect opportunity. If anyone in this movie is related to any new character in The Force Awakens somebody at Lucasfilm dropped the ball and decided being cutesy was more important than telling a good longform story.

There is one plus side to all the "Is Jyn Rey's mom?" talk happening online - it spreads the understanding that Rogue One happens before The Force Awakens. I'm deeply curious about how much of the genral audience will know the movie is a prequel by the time it's released. How many people will walk out of the film thinking Darth Vader is back? (Weirdly he's not really in the trailer - that would be one way to indicate the story takes place in the past, although I'm guessing there's a fear of what I just mentioned happening - people thinking he's back and that this is Episode VIII) You can lead an audience to a movie but you can't make them understand it.

I'm really excited about the Star Wars Story concept because it opens up so much more of the universe. It's just gonna take a minute for everybody to understand how much different this movie could be from everything else that came before.

As much as I love the original films, I'm cool with a darker/serious tone.

As far as the "Young Han Solo" movie, I'm not excited about that either. I think they should leave all the original characters be.

I do like how Disney will be expanding the universe with films. We've had novels, comics, and video games and we finally get to see some on the big screen. I just would rather have new characters introduced rather than having a "young obi wan" or a "young Han Solo" movie.

In response to Reply # 79

If the Anthology films are supposed to be a different type of vibe from the main Star Wars movies then they shouldn't be filling in important gaps in the main timeline. This is a direct prequel to A New Hope, so yeah, it should match tonally with A New Hope. Even if there aren't Jedi involved.

I think the first Anthology film should have been either a spinoff or from an entirely separate timeline like the Old Republic.

'Rogue One' Drama: Writer Tony Gilroy Taking on More Duties

The Hollywood Reporter The Hollywood ReporterAugust 3, 2016

An unexpected Jedi knight has emerged during the production of the next Star Wars movie.

Several insiders say Tony Gilroy, an uncredited writer on Disney’s upcoming spinoff Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, has been empowered to take the lead on postproduction for the Dec. 16 release, even as director Gareth Edwards remains involved in the project.

Gilroy, 59, writer of several Bourne movies and director of The Bourne Legacy and Michael Clayton, became the driving force behind Rogue One’s extensive, recently wrapped reshoots, which ran around five weeks. Now he is said to be “supervising” the edit with input from Edwards, who scored the Rogue One job after his 2014 Godzilla reboot impressed Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy. Edwards, 40, remains very much involved and still is the face of the movie, appearing at Star Wars Celebration in mid-July.

One insider painted the Edwards-Gilroy pairing as collaborative, which should be no surprise: Gilroy, who has a relationship with Kennedy’s producer husband, Frank Marshall, from the Bourne series, also helped Edwards out during the making of Godzilla.

“There are not two separate editing rooms; they are all in there with their ideas,” says one source close to the production. “Tony’s a strong force, but they’re all working together.”

The Gilroy-backed reshoots tackled several issues, according to sources, the ending of the film among them. The Death Star heist project, the first “stand-alone” Star Wars movie to deviate from the seven Episodes released between 1977 and 2015, is said to lead straight into the original Star Wars: A New Hope.

This isn’t the first time Gilroy has gone from behind the keyboard to behind the camera. As a writer on 2002’s The Bourne Identity, he helped Marshall when the producer took over the film from director Doug Liman.

And none of these developments is likely to spell doom for Rogue One, which is expected to be one of the year’s biggest hits.
In fact, the movie follows Star Wars’ long and storied history of dramatic productions. The original film’s cantina scene, where Han Solo faces off with Greedo, was completely revamped during reshoots. Empire Strikes Back’s shoot went so off-schedule and so overbudget that creator George Lucas fired Gary Kurtz, his producer on Star Wars and American Graffiti. And for Return of the Jedi, Lucas installed Richard Marquand as director but actually supervised swaths of the shooting himself.

Disney declined comment on Gilroy’s involvement.

I'm not talking about the Behind The Scenes reel (which was dope, btw). The trailer that was shown at SW Celebration is actually leaked on YouTube (the dude who posted it had some track playing in the background so it wouldn't get detected and deleted.) I can't post a link right now because I'm at work but I will when I have time. It was basically the same as the teaser that came out back in April but with a couple of different shots.

Its about time we get a full length trailer with December coming before we know it. I'm hyped!!

>Better than The Force Awakens
>trailers

Yeah this is probably a better trailer than we ever saw for TFA, but that movie had specific goals during the trailers and was able to play on nostalgia that gave them a feeling completely unmatched by this one. When I saw Han say "Chewie, we're home" I literally started tearing up. Or that incredible shot from the first teaser of the Falcon doing that flip with the camera following.

This trailer did a better job of setting the scene for the film, because that's what it had to do. It had to let the casual fans know that this isn't the TFA followup, and let everyone know who the characters are and what the premise of the film is.

I am completely blown away by how great of a job they are doing with this one as a spin off - you can clearly see a different style to the tone and the visuals from the saga films, but it totally feels like Star Wars. That's a tough balance to achieve and it looks like they are doing it here.

and like you said, the nostalgia factor for the TFA trailers played a big role in getting people emotionally invested in the flick

I'm just ready for this all out warfare Star Wars style movie. With Darth hopefully fucking shit up, even if only for a limited amount of time

Not saying Rogue One will be better than TFA, but I definitely like this trailer more than any of the others. Even if that ain't saying much

It's hard to call it that when it takes place and ends 15 mins before episode 4. It's like episode 3.5 IMO. It's storyline directly correlates with the whole series.

The way Disney is going about this franchise the type of people they have working behind the scenes like the Story Group...they are in VERY VERY good hands with a solid team behind it than any other property out there right now.

The Force Awakens had a completely different set of goals. That was a film that needed to set up a new trilogy and introduce new characters that that trilogy is based on, while continuing the story of the original trilogy. TFA also had to reestablish what Star Wars was after the prequels. And the way they decided to go with the story by keeping the background of some characters hidden means we won't really be able to judge TFA accurately until the rest of the trilogy is out.

Rogue One is unique since it is the first "standalone" tar Wars movie, but is isn't really standalone since it is a direct prequel to A New Hope. So on one hand they want it to have a completely different vibe from the main saga films, but on the other hand since it leads up to 5 minutes before the start of A New Hope it needs to be somewhat similar in the feel. This is probably why they had to reshoot so much of it.

I think it absolutely is gonna look amazing, and for many people will be seen as better than TFA because it doesn't need to rely so much on nostalgia and can be something new. This is a much smaller story that may allow for more/better character development, while TFA had a ton going on because of everything it had to do. But depending on how the story plays out in the new trilogy, years later we may look back on TFA being a top 3 Star Wars film.

Given to her by her mother while saying "trust the Force". So...what could that mean? We know her father is the key to the Empire building the Death Star which uses kyber crystals to power it...did she grow up on a planet that has kyber crystals? That would be separate from Jeddah. Or was her father collecting them for scientific experiments? But her mother knew of their connection to the Force?

Very interesting, can't wait to see how this story turns out. I LOVE what the new cannon is doing with the Force, making it much less of a white or black, light or dark side thing, and more of a religion that people across the galaxy practice in different ways, with different levels of sensitivity. Makes for much more interesting stories than just having the Jedi and the Sith. Adds a level of mystery that used to be present in the days of the original triogy before the expanded universe and the prequels explained everything.

Bring it on!!!

Edit: Just rewatched and noticed that the crystal is colorless - now things are starting to make sense in terms of the new cannon explanation from the Ahsoka novel that the kyber crystals are all colorless until bonded with a Force user building their lightsaber. That's an explanation that makes sense but I saw it as an unnecessary change (especially when placed in a book, not a movie or TV show) from the old legends canon - until now that I see it's in Rogue One. There must be a bigger reason they are clarifying kyber crystals and the Lucasfilm Storygroup is keeping everything consistent across the various canon sources.

Also im hearing that this Catalyst book that leads up to Rogue One is very informative to read before the movie for us geeks who want to know everything and understand everything. Apparently her Father and Orson Krennic (dude in the white cape) are friends. One who is rising in the ranks of the Empire and the other someone who studied Kyber Crystals majority of his life. Theres tons more that im hearing from Jedi Council ep that makes this book a must read. That alone tho sounds interesting as fuck

I still think or maybe just hope that theres 2 Mikkelsen's in this movie and we get an appearance from Thrawn!! Something or someone from Rebels has to show up.
