"What's the worst show HBO put out?"

It's funny to see all the HBO Shows on HBOGO because you realize that they are capable of putting out NOT great shows as well as great shows.

Somehow it seems though they never have huge flops though. They kind of slowly introduce a show and let it build momentum or if the show isn't working out they allow it to slowly fade away (no finale, but no announcement of cancellation).

What yall think?

I agree completely. I torture myself at least a couple times a year by reading that avclub piece about the direction Daniel Knauf wanted to take the show.

nah they really didn't. stop that.

Ball was already on autopilot AFTER the first season and itching to bounce. It was clear in the fact that Ball only wrote ELEVEN of the shows episodes and started letting the other producers write the eps (and we all know the quality of the those eps was all over the map from the fair to mediocre to completely shit ass trash. Dude checked out and it was obvious second season onward.

He went to EP Cinemax's BANSHEE (the first 20 episodes) and go back to writing features and develop shows, etc.

But True Blue had one SOLID season - the first - and had random episodes that stood out. But whole seasons? Not even.

Season 2 and 3 feel like missed opportunities.

To be quite honest. I fucks wit Season 4. I thought that Season told a solid story and had found renewed energy.

Then Season 5 came back and the show became doodoo again.

I don't know, unless it's one of those "wait until you're in your 30's, then you'll get it" things (I was probably 19 when I tried watching it) I don't see it getting better with age.

And not unlikeable in the Always Sunny way, more like the worst episodes of Girls.

I give HBO credit for trying so many concepts last decade but that was definitely the worst.

I would throw K Street in there but it had some potential (Soderbergh and Clooney were involved) while Tell Me You Love Me was basically all about sex.

SN: I still ride for Carnivale to this day. It was legit. The only problem with that show is that it came off so esoteric and niche that there was no way a major Sopranos-level audience would follow it.

I remember watching K Street during its one season run but I don't remember anything worthwhile about the show.

Carnivale is one of my all time favorite shows.

Treme?
The Leftovers?
True Blood?

Arli$$ was considered below HBO's standards back years before it was just an Emmy factory.

But I do have to say that the payoffs in the last 2-3 episodes made the whole season worth it.

I'm still skeptical going forward, but at least things made a shit ton more sense once they tied it together.

They didn't know how long the show was going to last, so they spent a lot of time creating atmosphere, and treading water because they didn't want to reveal their secrets too soon.

Shows with central mysteries need pre-determined run lengths to avoid those kinds of pacing issues.

Write yourself in a corner, then write yourself out. Writers be too scared to put themselves in a situation w/out immediately seeing the exit plan.

Have a little faith/courage and trust in your talent.

Shit's SO simple, but it's also VERY hard to do.

It's just that, in comparison to what HBO is putting out now it doesn't fare well.

Think about this; Arli$$ was so good that it had people thinking Sandra Oh was actually attractive.

And from what I saw of either show, nither has been as entertaining as those 3 series. Espically since Hung and How to Make It in America had finally hit their stride and had great seasons when they got the axe.

The first few years had a sexy Delta Burke and at least 1 pair of great kitties shown an episode.

They edited them for TV and those are the only ones you can get now- which have none of the charm of the original versions.

It was funny for what it was - a mildly funny show and some titties!

You definitely want more, but I think both shows knew it was more likely they'd be canceled than not, so while the endings were open-ended they tied things up as much as they could.

I'd recommend Deadwood far before Rome but Rome is pretty fascinating power play stuff.
