"Tron 3 (Kosinski, 201?)"

I can't believe this is ready to shoot this fall. I also can't believe Disney didn't get a better director. Joseph Kosinski has great, striking visuals and great scores by iconic artists (Daft Punk Tron 2 & M83 for Oblivion), but after the first act his movies fall apart. They usually have an action scene to get the blood flowing again, but for the most part his movies don't work. Not to mention his actors are stiff. TC lacks that TC swag in Oblivion.

http://badassdigest.com/2015/03/10/report-tron-3-shoots-this-fall-in-vancouver/

UPDATE: Right after I ran this story I was contacted by a trusted source who tells me that the movie is happening, and that Joseph Kosinski is back for it. So here it is, folks, Tron Legacy 2.

You know you live in an era of property-driven filmmaking when a movie like Tron, a flop, doesn't get just one sequel - which technically/kinda made money* but had no impact on the world - it also gets a second sequel. At leats that's according to local Vancouver blog VanCity Buzz, which reports that Tron 3 shoots there this fall.

First: VanCity Buzz is very much a local news source, not a hit-whoring movie blog. The report that they have seems to be coming from their local reporting, and so for me it's got a bit more truth to it than whatever nonsense nerdmovies.com makes up and submits to Reddit. And there have been a lot of rumors of a Tron 3 swirling about, even if nothing has ever come of it for the past five years. Could Disney have finally pulled the trigger?

The site says that Garrett Hedlund is attached to return, but that's about it. What the story will be is probably secondary, since if this movie is happening it's Disney's last attempt to move some toys and to maybe put together a collector's edition trilogy Blu (how many times will they make you buy Tron?). The big question isn't who is starring, but who is writing and directing. So far that's been the weakness in both Tron movies - they're spectacular looking bores. With their third at-bat I hope Disney dumps Joseph Kosinski and finds a filmmaker who understands not just the visuals but also the process of telling a compelling story.

* this is one of those times where it's very tough to figure out the truth of a financial situation. Tron Legacy barely made back its announced production budget domestically, and that doesn't even begin to cover marekting and stuff. It made more money international, but the general math holds that a film needs to make double its budget before it enters profitabliity. Worldwide, Legacy barely did that (especially if, like me, you find the official $170 million budget fishy). A film like this is supposed to drive ancillary sales - toys, games, cartoons - which it didn't, so the film's lack of a strong profit plus its inability to move merch make it kind of a loser.

me as regular movie-going public, kinda don't give two shits about the profits Legacy made. the visuals were stunning, the story was great (recycled motifs like a motherf, but still great), easter eggs, callbacks, Daft effing Punk. i mean for a franchise that is supposedly only revived to move merch and toys? they sure don't seem to give a fuck about moving merch and toys.

http://badassdigest.com/2015/04/07/olivia-wilde-to-rerezz-for-tron-3/

Even though Tron Legacy was not very good and was received by the public with a collective shrug, Disney is - as we reported to you first in March - bringing Joseph Kosinski back for a Tron 3. We had heard that Garrett Hedlund was along for the ride, and now it's being reported that Olivia Wilde is back as well. You may recall (but let's be honest, probably will not remember at all) that the ending of Tron Legacy had Tron Jr and Olivia Wilde's character Quickbooks rezzing into the real world in what felt like the set up for a cheap TV show rather than a blockbuster sequel. Each week Kid Tron and Quickbooks travel the country, repairing computers and solving crimes/stopping evil developers from taking small family businesses!

If the film starts shooting this fall - as it is scheduled to do - it seems plausible that it might not be out until the year after next if they want a summer date (it could conceivably come out around Thanksgiving 2015, I guess). That means there's going to be about six years between films, which is still less than the massive decades-long gap between Tron and Tron Legacy/

The next person the film needs to secure (and I'm sure they will) is Cillian Murphy, shoehorned into the last movie to be set up as a future villain. When the three leads are all lined up we'll be prepared to once again shrug at yet another soulless, weirdly uninteresting vision from the mind of Kosinski.

By the way, a program became flesh in the last movie - if they don't call this one Tronsubstantiation they can fuck right off.

http://www.thewrap.com/disney-unplugs-tron-3-starring-garrett-hedlund-olivia-wilde/

Director Joseph Kosinski had been courting Jared Leto to co-star in follow-up to 2010’s “Tron: Legacy”

Disney has come to its senses and elected not to move forward with “Tron 3,” which was gearing up to start production this fall in Canada under the direction of Joseph Kosinski.

Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde were slated to return to star and Kosinski had been courting Jared Leto and Olivia Munn to co-star in the big-budget sequel.

The cancellation of “Tron 3” comes on the heels of “Tomorrowland” underperforming at the box office last weekend. Brad Bird‘s original film cost Disney $180 million and grossed a disappointing $42.7 million over the four-day holiday weekend.

“Tron 3” had not been officially greenlit yet and after the relative failure of “Tomorrowland,” Disney executives may not have wanted to gamble and risk exposing the studio to another loss.

Instead, Disney will stick to what has worked lately such as live-action versions of its animated films including “Cinderella” and “Maleficent.” The studio has blockbusters such as “The Jungle Book,” “Beauty and the Beast” and an “Alice in Wonderland” sequel on the horizon.

Released in 2010, “Tron Legacy” grossed $400 million worldwide but despite that impressive haul by most standards, the film wasn’t seen as a huge hit for Disney and its merchandise did not sell as well as the studio hoped.
