Now HERE'S the romance we need this Valentine's Day.
As a huge fan of the original musical, I was concerned that Hollywood, per usual, would fuck this up. It's inherently theatrical, with its inverse timelines and its series of solo numbers. I had no clue how they would handle that.
Luckily, LaGravenese trusts the material and trusts the audience. He more or less just throws these characters into real New York and lets the songs tell the story. Thank the Lord.
Anna Kendrick is fucking *great* in this. Thank God she has decided to singlehandedly attempt to bring musical theater back into film. She must have known how perfect she would be for this. Jeremy Jordan, who hadn't really impressed me to date, isn't as good as Kendrick (who is?) but he more than holds his own-- the original performer is a personal favorite of mine, so I was ready to hate-- he's charming, supportive, and lends some nice colors to the character. And the music, as always, sounds brilliant.
This is in select theaters, but *it's available to rent on iTunes right now for $6.99.* The chemistry between Kendrick and Jordan is 10000x better than the Fifty Shades of Grey duo. This is a deeply romantic musical-- it deals with heartbreak, true, but it's also sexy, warm, and funny. Go check this out if you're a fan of musicals. (If not, don't bother, as this is literally wall-to-wall singing with basically no dialogue.)
