"No Justified season 6 post?"

The final season.

Raylan. Boyd. It's all happening.

Season 5 was pretty disappointing to me but considering the shows track record beforehand, I got confidence this will end excellently.

Justified's sub par season is still better than 99% of other shit on tv.

And The Americans in a week or so!

Couldn't believe that when I read it. But I think this season will be more focused and having Boyd back as the Big Bag will help; the Crowe family was just a weak villain.

The opening episode was great. Garret Dillahunt looks like he could be (not surprisingly) a strong addition, Boyd is back to being the most dangerous man in Harlan and Raylan is more on the wrong side of the law than he is the right. Ava also has a high wire act to pull off.

Happy to have it back.

catching a hot slug to the dome in this first episode, but I'm happing Dewey finally met his demise, especially when he ran through that roadblock. Amazing that character lived as long as he did in that show's universe.

im ready.
gotdamn, pour one out for Dewey.
i know there's foreshadowing galore goin on, but i think the most interesting one was from Art. thus im kinda iffy on Raylan making it out in one piece by series end.

a couple of callbacks this episode. raylan smashing dewey's face into a steering wheel, ava plotting a crowder's demise. fairly certain raylan will live at the end, but at a significant cost i'm sure.

I'm enjoying how this season is playing out, the stakes are getting higher and everyone but Raylan seems to get it. I'm actually worried if he's going to make it out this season.

I'm enjoying Mary this season not to say she's legitimizing the show because it was legit after season 2, but she brings something else to the show that i can't put my finger on. I think it's going to be her and Boyd going at it this season.

Tim is turning into Raylan Jr, Choo Choo is comedy. Garrett Delahunt is a great on this as well, he looks like a more put together Quarles.

The whole bank is in a pizza parlor thing is strange, you mean all this time no one in Harlan knew there was money there.

with the semi-hipster beard was the new big bad the season and not Sam Elliot. Watching the second episode I was wonder how much money Sam Elliot had to get paid to shave off that trademark stache though. I do like the fact a new big bad is being added on in addition to Rayland trying to nail Boyd as well.

and up there with some of the best episodes of the series. I watched every episode of the first four seasons twice during the weeks they premiered and revisted them over the subsequent years because the writing was so good and the characters so fun and rich. Season 5 with its dubious casting and meandering plotting put a stop to that quick and really burned up a lot of goodwill. Thankfully they've earned it all back with the first two episodes of this season. If they can maintain this pace I think season 5 will be worth a revist for the table-setting it has done for this season.

Really happy that so far the show is moving toward finishing strong.

-This is the first episode I can remember with no on-screen violence. But maybe I'm just forgetting some
-Calhoun's prostitue was great
-What I wouldn't give for a Choo Choo/Dewey Crowe (PBUH) scene. What a great performance
-Sam Elliot's transition from equitable employer and emotionally tuned in old stoner to menacing boss man over the course of the scene with Mary Steenburgen's character was a masterful bit of economy in terms of writing and performance and bodes really well for his addition to the show.
-Garret Dillahunt is always welcome and brings a wonderful creepiness that is just waiting to bubble up full tilt. His scene with the realtor filled me w/ dread.
-Boyd and Raylan
-Always happy for more Tim but he needs to see someone about those boners before they shortbus him.
-I really hope Rachel isn't consigned to desk duty all the time.
-This will be Ava's best season arc which is due especially after Season 5

Everyone is firing on all cylinders at the moment.

-Avery Markham's two scenes have already slid him into second place behind Mags Bennett in the show's long line of Big Bads.
-Boyd's been threatened, shot, and betrayed but I don't ever remember him getting just outright sonned. Markham put him in his place. Problem is Boyd isn't one to stay there.
-Wynn Duffy's Banana Hammock is everything
-'When you frisk Boyd, check his cigarettes
-The Walker and Boyd pontificate-off
-Choo Choo trying to holler at Ava
-Ava drunk.
-Ava sexy.
-'I'm going to shoot your dick off'

-------------------------------

all the scenes with the guy Raylan dug coal with were awesome, esp his lil speech to Raylan about kids and sacrifice....

i DO think that Wynn Duffy and ole girl are in over their heads, playing with two forces that could easily kill them both, and i can't wait to see it all happen...

Choo Choo trying to holla WAS hilarious!!

...i was wondering if they were gonna delve into the relationship between the one guys son and the other guy's brother...but they hinted enough i guess...

Raylan cold as fuck, but as noted, Boyd and Markham were pretty clearly the starts of the episode.

I imagine Boyd gonna spend the rest of the season exacting his revenge on Markham. I fear Choo Choo is going to catch a serious bad one.

Only question is why were Markham's flnukies wearing masks after they abducted Boyd? Everyone knew who the others were.

That is gonna happen. He's one of the greatest henchmen this show has ever had imho. And I think Boyd will have a showdown with Walker, much as I'd love to see Raylan piece him up too. I think Tim'll take out the Fake Bill Burr henchman. And I think in the end, Ava is gonna be the one who takes down Boyd, dead or alive.

unless they totally shit the bed this is going to be the best season in the show's history.

They are really going all out now and are in a perfect rhythm. Last night's episode despite being relatively quiet had so many great moments and performances. It's insane that each episode this season has gotten better and better despite the fact that each episode has been among the series' best. I'm really enjoying the consistently expanding scope of this season. Going in, I thought it'd be the Raylan, Boyd, Ava show and that would be the main emphasis this year. I'm so glad that their story is connected and will be resolved as part of the larger narrative of Markham's story and his designs on being the legal weed kingpin of Harlan.

This is the first year that they've thoroughly nailed the over-arching narrative and created something that has the scope and dramatic meat to really create a compelling season without the criminal of the week stories. As much shit as season 5 has had heaped on it, and with good reason, people forget that season 4 suffers from similar problems. It was the first year they fully eschewed the one-offs in total service of the season-long plot and while doesn't engender or deserve the criticisms of last year it certainly isn't as compelling as the first three seasons. Granted, few seasons of any show are.

Finally, they've hit the jackpot this year. They have not only their most compelling villian in the season's history but they are juggling all of the narrative strands with incredible precision. It's insane that the story is expanding at the rate that it is while fully remaining faithful to the show's grand themes while at the same time putting all the pieces into play bring the story of Harlan, it's residents and the interlopers that come calling to a fitting end.

I'm so glad this series is ending on a high note.

All that said:

-Tim Gutterson's ideal of death gives me a boner
-Raylan Walker face off.
-The return of Loretta and that Apple Pie
-'What up pimps?' The almost triumphant return of Dickie Bennett.
-Mary Steenburgen and Sam Elliot are in Emmy nom territory as is Joelle Carter
-Ava and Katherine's as the ladies who lunch. And what says light lunch like a few lines of pharmaceutical-grade blow?
-'See what I did there?' If Wynn Duffy can make it out of Harlan alive he's got bright future at open mic nights.
-I don't think Raylan has actually pulled his gun this season
-'I told you assholes to leave your cellphones in the car'

I had thought Raylan vs Boyd was a little low stakes to go out on. But throwing in Markham, they have raised the not just stakes but the quality of the show. Having someone as talented as Sam Elliott as your big bad just elevates the quality of the show, and having actors like Olyphant and Goggins who can go toe to toe with him in a scene and not seem outacted is a testament to the work they've put into their characters.

When the show runs its course, I have to buy the boxset. I recognized the call back, but I forget the exact circumstances that led the head Bennett Clan woman to drink her own poisoned drink and kill herself. I hope the show will hold up to multiple viewings despite the fact I already know the outcome.

And something else I didn't see you mentioned is that this final season is a bit different in that it isn't entirely clear if Rayland will win 100% like he has in the prior seasons. At least I get the feeling it is possible both Boyd and Rayland could possibly get gunned down for both tying to reach beyond their stated goals.

As someone who watches each episode twice the week it airs and has rewatched each season (save 5) a couple of times through now it not only holds up but becomes a richer experience. I think them sticking the landing this season will not just serve as a great final chapter but also enhance the earlier seasons. I think I'll be more interested to revisit Season 5 after the show comes to a close because that is where a good bit of table-setting for the feast that has been Season 6 was done.

To your second point, I agree it is unclear whether Raylan will come out '100% victorious'. I am inclined to think that since the showrunners and writers are obsessed with giving this an ending Leonard would be proud of he will come out alive. Although I'm not particularly well-versed in Leonard's entire bibliography from what I have read, he doesn't seem like killing his protagonists is something he's big on. I could be wrong. But I don't see him coming out completely unscathed or unchanged.

It's when Raylan finally brings the whole Bennet Clan down, he kills the oldest son, cripples Dickey and basically they've surrounded the house he kinda gives her a choice and they sit and have some of the Apple Pie, she poisoned her own glass and drinks it.

Does she normally do dramatic works like this? I only remember her from Stepbrothers and the few episodes she did on Curb. She's doing a great job with the scenes she has on Justified and I'm curious if she's done anything else similar.

The safe cracker storyline was a perfect example of how to do a C story. Get two great characters together, have it tied to a main story but make it kind of standalone. Throw in some tidbits like "Maui". (Also, loved Boyd's "I don't know what that is." "I don't want that.") Sidenote: I really hope Walton Goggins gets more opportunities once this show ends. So good in this, The Shield, SOA.

And this season has been a masterclass on fan service for a final episode. Perfect use of Dewey Crowe and Dicky Bennett. Nice callback to the Apple Pie. The visits fit in the story and have given closure to those characters. "LORETTA!"

And this season has been, besides the "You forgot your cigarettes line", a great version of cat and mouse where people are always one upping one another rather than one person doing something completely stupid to get them caught. (The only time Justified really failed at this was when the scene where they locked up the Detroit guy in the whore house and the hookers gave him a shotgun. But that episode was apparently written over a weekend while the writer was on vicodin so Ill cut them some slack.)

Great season so far.

I have absolutely no memory of the dude Boyd had help him with the dig operation. At all. Nice to see the show dig back into prior seasons for call backs though. Best thing is that they aren't cheaply done and actually fit into the current storyline.

It really hasn't lost a step. Yeah, last season had more than its share of wheel-spinning (Ava's protracted stay in prison) and a sorta weak villain (Rappaport), but it wasn't like those were problems that necessitated a "WRAP IT UP, B!" alert.

The only thing about this season that screams "FINAL SEASON" is the inevitable lead-up to Raylan vs. Boyd for the final time, and Raylan telling Winona last season that he'll join her in Florida. There really isn't a reason, plot-wise, why this season couldn't just be the end of Raylan vs. Boyd, and then they just move on to Raylan vs. Wynn, Markham, or Katherine Hale (though I imagine all three may well be dead by the end of this season). I dunno, maybe Olyphant wants to move on to other things.

>Markham, and Wynn Duffy haven't had a scene together yet
>right? I'm waiting for that

Yep. That should be great.

>My only gripe is that i wish i didn't keep noticing Cali
>filming locations lol

That's been an issue the entire series though. I always wondered why they never bothered to find a way to shoot in Kentucky. Especially with the locale so central to the story.

I guessed that we was the snitch a few episodes ago, because, really, who else could it be? It's a damn shame the "I used to date a tennis pro" dipshit Mike is going to sell him out to Hale and Markham.

We're all still watching this, right?

Anywho, these last few episodes have been tense as hell and overall excellent. They're pretty going towards the end firing on all cylinders.

Two minor issues: 1. It's a little obvious and on the nose that they're setting up Loretta to become the new Boyd, complete with a pre-existing friendship with Raylan. 2. Also seems late in the game to introduce Boon the psycho. I guess they felt they had to get rid of all the mercenaries, but we're nearing the home stretch, and they're still putting pieces on the board. Which is also a reason why I feel like they don't need to end the series here.

I wasn't really sure, but it did cross my mind. the whole "he's a accusing you of being the snitch to throw you off him", made me think maybe it's Duffy. I keep hoping Mikey stays loyal, just because. But he's too dumb to know Markham will think the guy who rats out the rat is still a rat, as well as disloyal, and just get rid of him too

But it turned out to be a "move the pieces" episode on steroids. Not that I'm complaining.

Another interesting fold is if he does rat Wynn out to Markham, if he lets slip, even accidentally, that Hale knows Boyd and Ava. When the two of them showed up in the pizza parlor, it threw me for a loop for a second that she pretended that she didn't know who either of them were. Then I remembered she was the one who first pitted Boyd against Markham.

>I put Boon in the category of all those colorful bad guys who

I hope so. I hope they don't go with "new young quick draw takes out the old guy" thing by the end. I really doubt they'd go that direction, as killing Raylan absolutely isn't something Elmore Leonard would do.

Yeah, i had the same reaction. She played that pretty masterfully. just a low key comment on how Boyd was slightly different than what she expected

That would infuriate me, and probably most viewers. I don't see them doing us that way. i think if anyone kills Raylan, it might be Loretta. I really don't expect they'll end the series with his death tho.

Not that I want to see the character's downfall, but I wouldn't mind seeing Raylan get taken down a peg if only because it will provide a little wrinkle in the typical Hollywood ending of the protagonist winning in the end. On the other hand, seeing him die would be very depressing since he has the newborn to take care of.

It very amazing how good this season has been given that isn't the last one. Most top notch TV shows don't go out this strong.

(the Wire)...that he'll be this nobody that might not take down Raylan but puts him on the sidelines unexpectedly?? there's always someone faster, stronger, smarter..the show has illustrated this a few times...

not saying he'll live through the series though, just do some unexpected MAJOR damage...

...the entire design of this season, if not the series.

This entire season has been built around Raylan finally squaring off with Boyd. Everything else is a means to that end. And if they then bring in a character five episodes before the season ends to then sideline Raylan to prevent that from happening, well, that would be shitty storytelling.

Besides, they've already done the "There's always someone younger/faster" thing on the show, multiple times. The first season where Raylan gets jumped by the punks the bar (they steal his hat) and the second where Raylan gets stomped by Coover (before eventually killing him by the end of the season). And hey, it's been done before in all sorts of shows, like obviously The Wire. It'd be predictable if they went that route.

I guess you can fault the waiter for trying to puff his chest out initially, but I'm assuming he did that because the teen studying at the counter was his girlfriend and he want to appear to be something of a man in her eyes. I had to rewind the next scene that I think dealt with Boyd because I was still on edge when that diner scene ended.

Yeah, especially after him shooting Loretta's great-aunt. They don't let someone do that, plus the shit at the diner, and let him be the guy who kills Raylan/takes him out of action. Especially now that Ava shot Boyd.

I do think this is definitely going to be the end of Raylan on the U.S. Marshalls. Thanks in part to his intervention, she's in the wind with $10 million. His career can't survive that. They've been moving this direction since Season 4 at the latest. Hell, even Raylan's conversation with Ava was similar to his conversation with Boyd in the S4 Finale (in that they talk about how he could have easily ended up a criminal).

>but when he started gulping, you knew he really was just some
>run of the mill hipster guy. that was a hell of a scene
>though.

Yep. It was also basically a version of scene from Elmore Leonard's "Moonshine War" novel. As much as I love this show and wish it would keep going, part of me thinks they're packing it in because Leonard's dead and not there to provide them with inspiration anymore.

>such a tense episode all around. so good.

So much double crossing going on, it's hard to keep track to be completely honest. I've said it in this thread before, but I can't wait until the season set drops for this.

That six shooter character plays a good creep. That dinner scene was crazy intense. Also notice he shoot that old woman twice. He rivals that Quarles character in creepiness on this show IMO.

Sad to see this show go away, but at least it's going away at its best.

He looks to be the final loose end, the one last "justified" shooting to end the series as it began, before Raylan heads off to Florida. Probably in disgrace, as it's clear that he's going to take the fall for everyone to save Art, Rachel, and even Sanchez's career.

the final season of Breaking Bad? My head was spinning that last episode, so much so, I totally forgot Boyd has escaped until they showed him at the end driving in that sheriff's car.

It is so rare for a television show's last season to end this fucking good. I wonder how long in advance the writer's knew this was going to be the route they'd go. Seems so meticulously thought out. Unfortunately with Mad Men's swan song coming up, I doubt Justified will garner awards, but I think it deserves some; at the very least for writing.

To speak on at least one thing from the recent episode, Boyd is one ruthless vato to paraphrase one of the characters speaking about Denzel's character in Training Day. Boyd could have easily shot dude in the shoulder instead of killing him to accomplish the diversion he wanted.

after offing Carl like that.
AFTER setting him up as bait.
no loyalty to his own men.
reminds us that he is a dude that really deserves to be put down for good, despite whatever Walter Whiteish positive feelings we have for him as a likeable bad guy.
looks like loyalty and honour was a big thing this ep considering both Carl and Mikey got got.

Even after he found out she was a snitching on him to the guy she used to fuck, and he let his guard down and trusted her. Then her uncle who he was working with tried to blow him up.

By the time Carl shows up and points a gun at him, it's now the 3rd person he's down with trying to kill him within less than a week. if he can't trust Ava, he aint trying to wait and see with Carl. Plus now he's focused on that money like there's nothing else. Because for him, there isn't.

I feel the complaint that it seems they're trying trying to drive it home what a bad guy he is.. it's consistent tho.

but I thought his dour disposition spoke to the fact he is pretty much acting out of desperation at this point. In prior seasons, he was always one step ahead of Rayland of the other big bads he was beefing with on the show. This season he is catching L after L and none of his planned set of actions are fruitful for him.

i just think that anything that softened him up in any way is over. so he's more ruthless than ever.

i was kind of surprised, he didn't just kill, Markham, and Katherine Hale right there at the exchange. I guess he's still on that 'i gave my word' thing. but knowing they're coming after him, it would have seemed more practical.

All in all a satisfying conclusion. Didn't add to the series legend, but it really didn't need to. It felt true to what the series was, which is what was most important. It appeared after last episode that they wouldn't have enough time in a one hour episode to wrap up everything, but they pretty much tied up all the loose ends by a little over the half hour mark. Which was fine, because it allowed the series to end on character notes rather than wall-to-wall shoot outs. And come on, it was obvious Boone wasn't going to kill Raylan.

The good: everything with Raylan and Boyd. And Raylan and Art. And Raylan and his daughter. Damn shame it never worked out Winona. Also, the aforementioned Boone shoot out, complete with Loretta kicking the gun away.

Stuff that could have been better: could have used more Wynn Duffy, though I like the idea of surfing in Fiji amd loved the Doggie Van. And they still never Tim and Rachel much to do. Also a bit too many overt call backs to "Fire in the Hole." The whole circle of life thing gets tired. I guess we'll have to live with the mystery of what happened to the other $9 million, but I actually don't mind that at all.

I still don't think this needed to end, but it was a solid ending to a great show. And that's all it needed to be.

That last scene was everything I wanted for a final episode. If I have any complaint, it was that I don't understand why Art still had Rachel's office or why she got a half assed goodbye from Raylan. Seemed shitty. But that's nitpicking. I agree more Duffy would've been nice, but his arc was pretty much done. At least they didn't say he died off camera.

I really wanted Loretta to put a bullet in Boone's head to finish him off, but stopping him from taking another shot was a great touch.

I'm so sad this show is over. Like, lemme get ONE more season.

but as great as this final season was, I can't be too mad. I wish there was more Boon, but the mercenaries were good as well, so I guess that's a tough balancing act in terms of villains for this season. I guess I do like that there's some minor ambiguity for some of the plotlines so that fans of the show can judge for themselves how some of the characters landed on their feet.

I hope the Blu-ray boxset has some good commentaries and extras to make it worthy of my dollars.

"Justified" has never really done ambiguity, so a whole "Ava is in the wind never to be seen again" direction wouldn't have right. And I think there was enough ambiguity with rest of the $10 million still missing and Wynn largely in parts unknown.

The show was always about Raylan, Boyd, and Ava, so achieving closure fall all three of them was the right decision.

The main three surviving didn't bother me too much, but other events last night did. Boyd strolling up on Markum and Ava while he was chased on the manhunt bothers me, especially since the crew were very close to him WITH a helicopter above him that knew where he was. The crew was closer to him than Rayland was, yet Rayland ended up behind Boyd after Boyd cleared the room out. That was a bit to neat and convenient IMO. Boon running Rayland down bothered me a bit as well since that felt like a forced way to have those two have a showdown, but it doesn't bother me as much as my issue with the Boyd situation since the show established that Boon wanted to confront Rayland from the get go.

Overall, I'm not too mad because this season was so good, I can't get to mad with what the show gave me.
