That I would be upset about a 90 minute toy commercial not getting nominated for Best Animated. But I am.

How does Lego Movie not get a nomination? For some reason, this upsets me more than any other snub (maybe because it's not a particularly strong category to begin with?)

Same for no Best Director nod for Ava. And Bradford Young should have been nominated for SOMETHING, whether it be Selma or A Most Violent Year (another movie that deserved a better showing).

Paramount dropped the ball with those Selma screeners, bottom line.

And once they did get them out, they sent them only to SAG and BAFTA, none of the guilds like the Producers or Director's Guilds. The movie was not produced by a Writers Guild signatory, and the credited writer (and I believe Ava) are not in the Writers Guild, which is why we didn't get screeners.

But to be somewhat fair to Paramount, Ava debuted what she called an unfinished cut of the movie at AFI Fest on November 11. I saw the same cut, with the same disclaimer about a week later. And yes, the film wasn't finished: one of the effects shots needed work (the explosion that opens the movie), and there were no end credits.

I'm joking but cumong man. That movie was well-acted, well-shot, and intelligently written. And even if the prevailing thought was that it was indeed boring, they still could have thrown it a bone for Best Costume Design, or for Best Production Design, or whatever.

Outside of Keaton, I would have gladly bumped everyone else for people like Oyelowo, Fiennes, Gyllenhaal, Tom Hardy (for Locke OR The Drop), Joaquin (for, YEP, Inherent Vice), or even some motherfucking Andy Serkis.

In a year in which so many leading men were so good, being fine to strong in a fine to shitty biopic shouldn't cut it.

Every year a bland, paint-by-numbers biopic of a historical figure is always frontrunner.

And they (the Academy) never see that predictable pattern at all.

Most voting bodies at least nominated these bland guys. Because, since voting is about consensus, the least controversial picks are the ones that get nominations.

I wonder what would happen in the Oscar acting categories if those were tallied using a preferential system, like Best Picture. I imagine you'd see more choices that people are passionate about, instead of the choices people simply agree are safe.

It may also be that critics, guild members, and Academy members alike simply earnestly enjoy biopics more, because they're predominantly all old white men, and old white men love biopics.

Or some combination of the above two.

But if it were just "the Academy is outdated!" then we'd see their picks vary wildly from the other nominations in other awards shows, when they're mostly the same safe picks down the line. So it's clearly bigger than just the Academy. Everyone votes for these biopics, so either it's a procedural problem across the board, a "voting member demographics" problem across the board, or, most realistically, a combination of both.

out "President". She gets pissed when people don't vote, but it doesn't matter in the end when she picks what ends up on our list and what doesn't.

It could be the same thing happening with the Academy as well where people vote yet the final "word" is rigged due to politics and power positioning

Best Actor should have been:
MIchael Keaton Birdman
David Oyelowo Selma
Ralph Fiennes The Grand Budapest Hotel
Jake Gyllenhaal Nightcrawler

add a sixth from Serkis, and everyone else....

because Cumberbatch and Redmayne were both fine in The Imitation Game and The Theory of Everything but they were just..fine. THey weren't strong at all to me. Keaton, Oyelowo, Fiennes and Gyllenhaal were all ridiculously strong and powerful etc.

I didn't get that from Benedict or Eddie.

Though shout out to Graham Moore for getting an Oscar nomination for The Imitation Game, the White gays and WeHo queens will be clapping for this one....

In response to Reply # 0

I thought it might get into best picture (an uphill battle, but it was relatively on par with pixar movies that have been nominated) but I didn't believe my roommate when he said it wasn't nominated for the animated award. That makes zero sense.

Robert Duvall's nod is kinda weird too

On the plus side it's really cool that Ida got a cinematography nom. After having The Grandmaster in the nominees last years, this category seems to be the one trying to branch out

For the record, my teams:
MLB: Mets / Soccer: PSG
NCAA BB: Arizona / NCAA FB: Michigan
NBA: Spurs / NFL: Jets

They also love white cinematography.

Just no black cinematography. So Bradford Young is out.

(Jokes aside, they really do love b&w.)

37. "do these guys even go to the movies?"
In response to Reply # 0

or do they just sit in their living room and watch screeners? none of the best pic nominees did even $60 million box office. the point of expanding the category past five was so they could nominate five oscar-bait films PLUS the interstellar/guardians of the galaxy/gone girl/lego movie type films, not so they could just increase the number of low-budget "quietly genius but complicated white guy overcomes odds" movies.

speaking of which, it's pretty clear at this point how the academy likes to see its black people: as slaves, maids, or criminals. anything else just rings false to them. selma is an american masterpiece, elevating a subject matter that so easily fits into schmaltzy made-for-TV-movie themes. easily the best civil rights film ever made, easily the most skilled portrayal of dr. king ever put to film. there is no excuse for brushing it (or ava/david) aside the way the academy did that doesn't boil down to naked racism/sexism. none.

after having their white guilt properly assuaged by last year's triumph of 12 years a slave, the overly-rich, overly-old, overly-white, overly-male academy is back to doing what it does best: rewarding films that massage the egos of rich old white men. once again, we get a list of awards that is chosen by a bunch of guys sitting in their underwear watching screeners in their den, that in no way represents 2014's year in film or the films that actual people actually went out and saw and enjoyed.

"i smack clowns with nouns, punch herbs with verbs..."
