"The Interview (Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg, 2014)"
Wed Dec-24-14 12:52 AM by Frank Longo

UPDATE ON THE UPDATE: we back!

UPDATE: Sony has announced no future release plans at all for The Interview. So much for "we stand by our talent."

Saw this shit Wednesday night.

A tad too long. Also, most of the jokes they beat to death.

With that said it's still funny. Not the laugh riot that was This is the End.

Worth a matinee. Not full price though.

"This is the End" will forever put me in this crew's good graces.

It's just added hilarity that this movie has actually drawn the ire of Supreme Leader.

And I just want to give a shout out to Randall Park, of Asian Jim and Supreme Leader fame. I used to watch this cat when he was one of the emcees in an LA-based underground group called Ill Again. Live band, with a really jazzy sound that would appeal to any Native Tongues fans, and I used to follow them around to random dive spots in SoCal (shout out to Temple Bar!). They also came along during an up-and-down time in my life, but I have nothing but positive memories of the band.

Really really happy to see that at least one member of the band made it, and as fucking SUPREME LEADER no less. "Figueroa" will forever be one of my favorite songs of all time of any genre... these damn horns always get to me:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dj6GSS3JTDc

And a link to their only album for good measure, genuinely good from top to bottom:

Warning
We will clearly show it to you at the very time and places "The Interview" be shown, including the premiere, how bitter fate those who seek fun in terror should be doomed to.
Soon all the world will see what an awful movie Sony Pictures Entertainment has made.
The world will be full of fear.
Remember the 11th of September 2001.
We recommend you to keep yourself distant from the places at that time.
(If your house is nearby, you’d better leave.)
Whatever comes in the coming days is called by the greed of Sony Pictures Entertainment.
All the world will denounce the SONY.

spent my weekend repairing diplomatic relations with north korea 'cause sony is genuinely freaking out about this. and freaking out about stuff it's too late to freak out about. full chickens with heads cut off mode. i'd be surprised, but not that surprised, if they just pulled it from theaters and sent it straight to on-demand.

On the movie posters, there's seemingly random Korean script (Hangul) written just below the actors' names and the title. For Westerners I think it was just kind of to imply "Hey everyone this movie has something to do with Asia, particularly Korean if you at least recognize Korean characters."

It actually translates to "Don't Trust These Stupid Americans!"

They stole 100 Terabytes of data. That's the correct number; I had to double check it to make sure it was 100 TB and not 10.

Included in that information are social security numbers, bank info, credit cards, home addresses, security information, and contracts for everyone who's worked at Sony Pictures or on a Sony movie in the last six or so years.

And their financial data.

And some awful internal PowerPoints

And yes, the emails.

They've leaked 300 GB of it so far. Only about 8 to 10 GB of that has been movies.

So I can understand concern. Now, while I don't know if an actual 9/11 type event was possible, more cyberterrorism is more likely.

after the terrorist threats came.

Not necessarily because of the data dump itself (recall how defiant they were up to the end), but in part in fear that "well, if they can hack into our servers and take literally everything, what else could they do to the movie theaters?"

And after you lose distribution to Regal and AMC, what would have been the point in continuing to release the film? It would have ended up playing only in small chains and indie theaters, and there goes their money. They could possibly stand to make more, apparently, by filing an insurance claim on the film vs. trotting it out to the few defiant houses that would still take it.

Let one incident have happened at one movie theater. With that forewarning, the theater and the studio would have been sued. That's what they're trying to avoid at the end of the day: spending money on court cases or settlements.

It played in less than 200 theaters because people refused to show it.

And Comedy Central censored South Park from showing Muhammad after threats (even though they'd let them show Muhammed in previous episodes.)

Shit, some studios thought it was a good idea to edit out the Twin Towers after 9/11, We haven't seen something this big because people usually aren't dumb enough to greenlight something like this.

And I'm being stereotypical bout Texas' demographics, but I find it mildly amusing that the satire in Team America World Police will probably go over much of the viewers' heads

http://drafthouse.com/movies/quote-alongs_team_america/dfw

Sure, you can celebrate your independence the usual way: slow sipping a beer as you stand over a grill while people you have only mild contempt for wait inside for their free meal. OR you can join The Action Pack as we celebrate the GREATEST MOVIE MADE ABOUT AMERICAN PATRIOTISM EVER and celebrate its 10th anniversary!

The world is different in 2014 than it was in 2004. Kim Jong Il is gone. I don't know if Michael Moore is still around or not. But a lot of the brilliance in TEAM AMERICA is timeless. Acting is still the greatest gift any human being can possess, and it's the only way to save America from the terrorists. Puppet f***cking is still awesome. And Matt Damon is still Matt Damon.

So celebrate your indendence this year with the Action Pack. We'll have subtitles for all the songs and all of our favorite quotes, so you'll have plenty of opportunities to scream out "AMERICA! FUCK YEAH!" at the top of your lungs. And yeah, we will have American flags, red white and blue streamers, balloons, and more for everyone. And THAT is how true American heroes will be celebrating this year, but if you want to let the terrorists win...well, that's your prerogative.

Sony is still a Japanese company. And to be fair, their history with North (and especially South) Korea is a lot more complicated.

I'm sorry, but if there were an issue regarding their "complicated history," then why did no one in the company dead the pitch from Rogen and Goldberg in the first place? Or at least change the pitch so that it's a fictional leader of a fictional country.

And I'm fully aware that this is all about money, and am also aware that in the leaked emails Sony didn't think much of this, that this was just a stupid little movie that would go out into the world, make some bread, then fade away, like the other Rogen/Goldberg movies... even though Kim Jong Un had been crying about this shit since the spring, when the first deluge of trailers began showing.

Again, somebody up the supply chain should have understood what the punchline of the movie was (because be clear, killing Kim Jong Un IS the punchline of the movie) and, armed with some sort of knowledge of if/how Sony Japan relates to North Korea, hipped our good executive buddies in 'Murica to that information before this shit got the green light, much less shot, edited, promoted to death, then put into position to roll into theaters in 8 days.

You don't have to be a fan of fucking Seth Rogen movies to know that it's a shitty deal.

Like I alluded to in my response to Ryan, we're living in a different era. Targetting North Korea isn't new (TAWP, Red Dawn), but the technological landscape is (even in two short years).

If painting North Korea as the enemy is the primary factor in all this, then why no uproar when Red Dawn was released in 2012? If anything, that movie should have even been more "dangerous" since it's a "serious" movie with N. Korea as unequivocal villains.

So what's changed? In 2012, when Red Dawn was released, the biggest tech news was the Facebook IPO. The NSA and PRISM and Snowden wasn't a thing. The major retailer hacks are years away. Uber was only used by hip college kids; now they have lobbying groups. Identity hacks were limited to individuals with stolen credit cards.

In 2014 though? Privacy isn't just a reddit drumbeat, it's a major domestic and foreign policy issue. Tens of millions of people have compromised identities through no fault of their own except having accounts at major financial/retail/tech companies. Hacking is SRS BIZNESS nowadays. And, like someone mentioned above, it wasn't just emails... it was a shitload of personal data.

Sony killing the movie is dumb, but considering everything involved I'm not surprised either.

Sidenote: interesting article exploring the idea that the Sony hack and Best Korea's position on the movie might be incidentally connected:

But it serves everyones purpose, lol.

It puts a different spin on the Sony hacks as opposed to exec's being lazy with security and deserving what they got since they suck at being people.

The US Govt has a convient badguy which is good timing since we are BFF with Cuba again. All it takes is for one of the suspected hackers to have a cousin who married someone who escaped from North korea for it to be 'linked'.

Literally the last thing I want being factored into what movies can be made is "let's make sure this doesn't piss off any totalitarian dictators anywhere." Fuck that shit. You honestly think it's a good idea to only make politically correct movies that won't offend anyone? Just about no topic should be off-limits.

That being said, I also think people who are saying Sony and the theater chains are pussies for backing out of this are also wrong. Fuck that too. This isn't the U.S. gov't caving to terrorists, it's a group of private companies. It's not their role to be heroic and stand up to potential terrorist threats, and frankly, it's not worth it for them. They weighed the potential pros and cons of showing the movie and decided, from a business standpoint, that the potential risks (be they additional cyber attacks or otherwise) outweighed the benefits. From a business perspective, it makes total sense.

Really, it's now the government's role to step in and protect its industry's interests as best it can. Anyway you slice it, this is is basically a domestic terrorist attack/threat by a sovereign nation, so the government has to address it.

If a theater receives a bomb threat, they're going to clear the theater. They're not going to say "fuck you, prove it!" and try to call the bluff. It's law enforcement's job, not theirs, to make sure the perpetrators of the threat are caught and/or can't call in anymore threats.

If the U.S. can really prove that these were state-sponsored attacks/threats, then there should be consequences and steps taken to try to prevent something like this from happening again. This kind of thing seems pretty unprecedented and has really far-reaching implications literally all sectors of the economy, so it seems like they're really taking their time to figure out the right way to address this.

"Just about"

When the comedy is based around murdering an actual foreign or domestic leader, I'd say that is off limits. I mean, The Great Dictator was obviously about Hitler and Mussolini but they still changed the names.

Personally, I think these theater chains should have made the stand before the threats, just as they banned the UK-produced "Death of a President".

The fact that a foreign country essentially attacked us over a movie is unprecedented but (and not saying this is you) all of the talk over free speech makes me laugh because Hollywood has a long history of censorship. But this is how war is going to look in the 21st Century - more attacks to destabilize than bombs to demolish and if NK was indeed behind it, the government definitely has to respond.

>"Just about"

In 100% honesty, what I had in mind with that "just about" qualifier was shit like child pornography and snuff films. If we're talking about purely fictional depictions of things though, I'm not a fan of imposing hard rules on what is out of bounds.

>Personally, I think these theater chains should have made the
>stand before the threats, just as they banned the UK-produced
>"Death of a President".

Yeah, but that was a business decision they made of their free will. The United States government made no attempt whatsoever to censor the film (I don't think Bush even commented on it), and it was easily accessible here on DVD. (I saw it. It's not that good, nor is it inflammatory. It's just a theoretical exercise in what the transition of power would look like if a sitting president was killed.)

I mean, as Longo and others have pointed out on Twitter, the U.S. media, including just about every single late night comedian, has openly mocked North Korea and Kim Jong-un on a regular basis for years. It was kind of silly to think that Seth Rogen's dick and fart jokes were going to be the straw that broke the camel's back.

I mean, making a similar movie about Obama in America could get you arrested and would, at least, get the Secret Service bringing you in for questioning.

There's mocking a leader and then there's making a comedy that makes his assassination a joke/punchline.

Crazy that they aren't letting places show the five year old "Team America". I mean, you know that Un and the Hackers have already seen it. Although Hollywood usually falls into silly season quickly after any controversy. (Like digitally removing the Twin Towers from movies after 9/11)

My college professor worked on "Lilo & Stitch" and told us about the trouble they had to go through to revise the ending in which Stitch was supposed to fly an airplane through downtown Honolulu.

Roy Disney & them called the studio either the day of or the day after 9/11 and ordered the sequence pulled and revised.

In the final release version, he flies a spaceship through the mountains.

that's what's really crazy. like, let's think about this logically here. what's the theory? that north korea has a bunch of sleeper cells hidden in the u.s., ready to carry out terrorist attacks at will? and that after decades of political turmoil with the u.s., they've chosen to activate those cells over a seth rogan/james franco comedy? no.

i've also heard people say that sony's headquarters is in japan, which is in range of north korea's nuclear weapons. like, again, decades of political turmoil with the u.s. and its asian neighbors, and they're gonna launch nukes (and brace for the retaliation) over a seth rogan/james franco comedy? no.

as for sony hoping to keep their hacked information under wraps by appeasing to demands... like, what? that information is out there. it's gone and it's never coming back. you don't cave to demands, hoping that the terrorists who stole your information and are threatening you with it will honor their end of the bargain. you can't start taking your marching orders from north korea and greenlighting/shelving $100 million movies because someone has your e-mails. you operate as if that information is ALREADY OUT THERE, because it is, and you do whatever you have to do to limit the damage of that new reality.

that's what's really crazy about all this. the speed and willingness to cave to such obviously empty threats is just disturbing.

We know. It is possible to know and understand things while not agreeing with them.

Meanwhile, I got artist-y motherfuckers on my FB timeline falling for that "they could bomb our theaters right when the projectionist pushes play on this movie! hey it happened before when dude shot up Batman..." line of bullshit.

And none of this is "caping" for Seth Rogen, btw. Your thoughts on him and/or his "shitty" movies are pretty much irrelevant regarding this particular issue.

The theater owners were likely more worried about some American nutjob doing something in the theaters that caused injuries and ended up getting the theater sued.

It's all about the money/liability. They threatened Sony workers' families in an earlier missive and people barely batted an eyelash.

The Interview is BACK ON as planned....how utterly convenient. This screams *INSIDE HACK JOB FOR PUBLICITY* in droves...

http://deadline.com/2014/12/interview-release-back-on-christmas-sony-attack-1201334389/

UPDATED WITH SONY’S STATEMENT: Sony Pictures is releasing its controversial movie The Interview in theaters after all on Christmas Day — likely in fewer than 100 indie theaters. We’re told the turnaround came after a conference call with Sony distribution execs that just ended. Several of the smaller chains are beginning to unveil the news via social media. “We just got the call,” said Brock Bagby, director of programming at KC-based B&B Theaters, which has 408 screens in eight states. “Our film buyers did. Sony will be playing it on VOD and letting anyone play it who wants it.”

RelatedCongressman Invites Sony To Screen 'The Interview' On Capitol Hill
Here’s Sony’s official statement quoting chairman and CEO Michael Lynton:

“We have never given up on releasing The Interview and we’re excited our movie will be in a number of theaters on Christmas Day,” said Michael Lynton, Chairman and CEO of Sony Entertainment. “At the same time, we are continuing our efforts to secure more platforms and more theaters so that this movie reaches the largest possible audience.”

“I want to thank our talent on The Interview and our employees, who have worked tirelessly through the many challenges we have all faced over the last month. While we hope this is only the first step of the film’s release, we are proud to make it available to the public and to have stood up to those who attempted to suppress free speech.”

Bagby said theaters were to give Sony an answer later today if they were going to book the movie. Several places are already aboard. “We’re going to put it in a theater,” Bill Barstow, owner of Midwest-based Main Street Theaters, told Deadline. “We’ve booked it at a 14-plex in Sioux City .”

The indie exhibitors have been vocal about being willing to show The Interview, Sony’s political comedy starring James Franco and Seth Rogen about two journalists who try to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. That pic prompted an unprecedented hack attack on Sony Pictures Entertainment last month that has engulfed the studio in crisis ever since.

Yesterday, a petition emerged signed by the indie theaters pledging to play the film if Sony let them. In Los Angeles, the Cinefamily theater held a protest screening of the North Korea documentary The Red Chapel on Sunday in support of The Interview. Cinefamily and Austin-based Alamon Drafthouse have publicly vowed to play the film if Sony released it.

BitTorrent and VHX, two direct to consumer digital distribution platforms, offered to release the film as well.

but PLENTY of people DO think it's a stunt (I just got done watching a new segment here on the local news where a grip of folk interviewed...ALL WHITE I might add...said they thought it was a marketing plot and stunt by Sony to get press for the movie....so yea, we may all think anyone who believes this was all a stunt to get people interested in the movie are stupid, but outside of this message board, PEOPLE BELIEVE IT'S A STUNT....)

That great "lost film" that we talk about for years with a release 10 years in the making and shit. Thought the movie was a let down. Some funny moments (Franco was on fire), but for the most part, just really dull.

He's awesome in this.
Nuance.
Dave Skylark should have been a nothing character, but Franco brought that shit way up.

Pretty fun crowd.
The crowd was lit from all of the grindhouse like trailers that the theater showed before the movie but exploded when these guys took the stage.

I thought it looked terrible from the commercials but it was funny.
Franco hammed it up pretty good for his role.

Not very funny and way too much Franco. And a whole lotta jokes about rectums.

This is the End is a far superior movie.

which isn't saying much because This Is The End was a hot mess in it's own right, with much of what you mentioned above...

at some point, i'm going to see this after the new year...for all of this bs Sony got caught up in over this film, I at least want to see what the point was...

though from what folk have been posting on Facebook about it, NOT MUCH....

still....Caplain, Park, and Bang can get me into Southside Works Cinema to see it....

I liked This is The End, but...

This was all bro humor and Asian jokes.

It had a few moments but overall totally not worth the hype.

Glad I didn't spend money on this one. I would have been mad disappointed if I had dropped 12 bucks on this at the theater.

Franco actually pulled off his douchebag character without making me hate him, which is saying something.

I think there's a quality film to be made with Franco and Rogen's characters trying to go "straight", angling to compete with 60 minutes. Either that or just exploring their usual interviews would have made a much better movie, because the Eminem and Rob Lowe segments were easy highlights. Obviously those interviews don't make an entire movie and other elements would need to be added to make it work, but IMO it still stands.

While I personally feel that the bromance between Franco and Kim Jong Un actually worked, pretty much everything about it had me rolling my eyes.

If you do, you will get plenty of laughs.
If you don't, stay away.

Rogen and Goldberg are clearly more comfortable making fun of celebrities than other countries (I'd watch a whole Skylark movie of his journey as a shitty reporter, as I thought Franco was hilarious). I laughed pretty consistently until they got to North Korea, where the laughs grew more sparse.

Still, I'm glad I got to see it. And good for Randall Park, who really is terrific as Kim Jong Un.

Don't know what people expected. It was a little too long, had some great riffing and a dope soundtrack, and James Franco was in full tryhard mode. It wasn't genre-defining satire (really, it was barely even satire,) but prior to a month ago, did anyone think it would be?

it was really entertaining and it's amazing how much production value they poured into such a ridiculous idea. these guys can really do whatever they want at this point...although i wonder how that carte blanche is holding up since the hack.

if you're a fan of their movies you will enjoy this. if not...don't expect anything different. they are what they say they are.
