177
Widow didn't have a change of heart
May 10th 2016

Look closer at everyone's motivations.
May 10th 2016

May 10th 2016
188
Pym hates the Starks
May 10th 2016
189
Yeah but that it Pym, not Lang.
May 10th 2016
193
Falcon is the one who recruited Lang for the Avengers in the first place...
May 10th 2016
194
I'm still not seeing his reasons for saying yes.
May 10th 2016
196
There are a lot of potential reasons
May 10th 2016
199
Some of those are pretty good
May 10th 2016
207
also, he seems easily star struck?
May 11th 2016
212
I think you're overanalyzing this one
May 12th 2016
229
Yeah, but Pym is his mentor
May 10th 2016
201
Also he wants to be a Hero
May 10th 2016
195
      But that doesn't work here
May 10th 2016
197
           With great power....
May 10th 2016
200
Think about Ant-Man's movie
May 10th 2016
205
He would have probably joined whoever asked him first
May 11th 2016
215
They planned how to disrupt Iron Man with Ant-Man
May 11th 2016

"To do this, we're working outside of the law." "What else is new?"

it was better than BvS obviously but y'all are way overboard with it
May 12th 2016
223
Lol what? Are the box office receipts "extra" too?
May 12th 2016
224
I said it was obviously better
May 12th 2016
225
....and I addressed the rest of your post

best superhero movie ever
May 15th 2016
243
Watched Winter Soldier last night and realized they TOLD us
May 16th 2016
244
Perfect red herring
May 16th 2016
245
so basically, Cap has the best superhero film trilogy so far.
May 16th 2016
246
I was going to make a post about this re: all-time trilogies
May 16th 2016
248
i don't think its a fair comparison...
May 17th 2016
249
the first cap movie was called "the first avenger"
May 17th 2016
250
there's no way you think all three Bat films are better movies
May 18th 2016
251
Nolan wins by default since these aren't really Trilogies
May 18th 2016
252
Just because it's not isolated doesn't make it not a trilogy.
May 18th 2016
253
doesn't matter, it's still Captain America 3
May 18th 2016
255
^^^^^^^Yup^^^^^^^
May 19th 2016

It was absolutely a triology

1) This follows a week heavy with rumors of Spidey getting Avengers-connected in the movies.

2) I'm not sure I like that Civil War shit is getting leaked before Avengers 2 comes out. Are they trying to get us hyped enough to deal with a weak movie?

Civil War is prob being set up cause Chris Evans prob wants out of his role as Cap.

Even if it does happen, it won't happen for years. Sony going to wait AT LEAST until 2016 to see how their "Sinister Six" movie fares. If that does well, they'll wait again until 2018, when Spider-Man 3 will be released. And even if it all goes to shit, Marvel wouldn't have a Spider-Man movie ready until at least 2020.

>2) I'm not sure I like that Civil War shit is getting leaked

I'm really doubt "Civil War" is going down anytime soon. Avengers 2 is "Age of Ultron" and they've already penciled in "Avengers 3" as their crossover with Guardians of the Galaxy/Thanos/Infinity Gauntlet. GOTG is the extremely hot property, so I imagine they're going to make sure that bread is buttered first.

If the driving force behind this plot development is the Superhero Registration Act, which exactly of the superheroes need to be registered? As it stands, just about all of the "superheroes" named above already work the government/SHIELD and/or don't have secret identities. The few exceptions are like two of the heroes associated with their NetFlix series.

Doesn't seem like the strong foundation for a plot, unless they actively work to establish that there's been a swell of "independent" superheroes, it seems like something they're trying to shoehorn in.

I mean, they have to come up with something to spread out the actors to keep them around. I imagine Avengers 3 will be the fallout of Civil War introduced in Cap 3, and the team will get back together in Avengers 4 before focusing on newer characters that they are certainly going to introduce in Phases III and IV.

Keep in mind, there are also the Netflix Defenders characters (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist) coming too.

I am willing to bet Spider-Man pops up in a film sooner rather than later.

FF looks to be on the fast track to be highly disappointing, so who knows what will happen there too.

what good happened or came out of that

all i recall is:

>> robo-clone-thor (and the subsequent shrugged off murder of a classic , Black, d-list hero)

>> the "iron spidey" suit (lasted what? two months?)

>> no-more-marriage-spidey

>> (not quite) dead cap

>> stark-led shield (didn't hold)

>> annual crossover events (and subsequent event fatigue because most of hem have really sucked)

i have zero warm fuzzies from that train wreck, why even consider making a movie out of it?

Onslaught, Operation Zero Tolerance, all that shit from the made fun of 90s era was better than the shit we get now.

Avengers VS X-Men, Infinity, whatever, it was better. It was more focused.

I think it was 7, and you might be better off never finishing it. I got back into comics for Civil War and its (main series) ending killed a lot of the big momentum gained in enthusiasm from me (for Marvel comics) that still hasn't recovered and I doubt ever will until there's a full editorial regime change or something.

The movie might do it better though; that I've more faith in.

In response to Reply # 33

For getting me hyped, this was almost (READ: ALMOST) tied with the Star Wars trailer.

I had to watch like 3 times to really get a good look at Black Panther.

And they're still holding out on showing Spiderman, Antman and Daredevil.

Honestly, I'm most interested in seeing them tie Daredevil into it. I'm pretty bored with Spidey at this point. And I can see Antman being the secret weapon that Cap uses to take out Iron Man...

...no way any film they release after this is gonna be better.

This film has pretty much everything you want.

Last 45 minutes are an emotional gut punch. Chick behind me would not stop crying. I'll be honest the end bummed me out. And I mean that in the most positive way possible.

But let's get to what you niggas really wanna hear:

-Black Panther is the film's MVP. Talking to the Russo brothers, the said if they could, they would do the BP solo film cause they love the character.

-Spider-Man is great.

-The film's main through line is Cap and Bucky's relationship. It is a Captain America movie.

-There's two sequences shot in IMAX. First is the big 15 minute epic face off and an sequence that pushes Cap physical, mentally, and emotionally. The IMAX shot stuff not only gives the film an epic scope but it's also part of the storytelling the Russos have accomplished.

-Ant-Man is a badass and owns.

They gonna have to put a rush on the Wonder Woman movie just so they can have a woman hero movie before Marvel does for the interest in DC movies to be there. Suicide Squad will not be what people think it is but the verdict is still out if it will be good or not. AND Marvel is dropping Daredevil on BvS release date and they hype for Punisher is there too! They may just have to keep dropping the great animated films and go back to the drawing board with the silver screen ones.

Marvel screened Captain America: Civil War for critics, giving us our first look at the next installment of the MCU. The results? Wildly positive.

Critics who saw the film praised Tom Holland’s Spiderman and Chadwick Bosman’s Black Panther, a couple of prominent action scenes, and overall labeled it the best MCU film to date.

Here’s a couple of reactions on Twitter:

@eeisenberg
Really incredible character work in #CivilWar. Spider-Man, Ant-Man & Black Panther kill it & Wanda/Vision & Bucky/Sam dynamics are wonderful
1:07 AM - 9 Apr 2016

‎@mikeryan
Oh yeah, the big fight in Captain America: Civil War is cinematic joy. And Spider-Man is so great. He's in it more than I thought he'd be.

I'm pretty sure Captain America: Civil War is my favorite Marvel movie.

What we thought of Captain America: Civil War
1:06 AM - 9 Apr 2016

@russfischer
CIVIL WAR: This Spider-Man is SPECTACULAR.
1:00 AM - 9 Apr 2016

@mjsamps
‘Captain America: Civil War’ is so good, it’s a better Avengers movie than the last Avengers movie.
1:00 AM - 9 Apr 2016

@colliderfrosty
CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR is a Barry Bonds steroids hitting home-run by Marvel & Russo Brothers. And I LOVED Spider-Man in the film. LOVED.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR has such incredible action set pieces because you care about the people fighting. It's not just punching bad guys
1:18 AM - 9 Apr 2016

@andysignore
Get excited for @CaptainAmerica #CivilWar Fantastic Characters, Amazing Action AND it contains the best comic book movie fight EVER. #Hype
1:03 AM - 9 Apr 2016

@KevinMcCarthyTV
At 8pm, WINTER SOLDIER was my favorite MCU film.

Roughly 2.5 hours later, CIVIL WAR is now #1.

Action masterpiece. SPIDER-MAN!!!#NerdTears
1:00 AM - 9 Apr 2016

Our own Germain Lussier was also able to take it in, and had this to say:

‎@GermainLussier
Captain America: Civil War is a complex mystery posing as a big, fun superhero film. Lots of themes and emotions. Very unexpected & VERY good.
1:00 AM - 9 Apr 2016

I honestly don't know how Civil War works. There's so much going on but it does. Spidey is AMAZING. Made me smile & laugh till my face hurt
1:01 AM - 9 Apr 2016

I'll also admit, after 1 viewing, I have some small issues with the film. I'm guessing they'll shrink after a 2nd viewing to unpack them tho
1:05 AM - 9 Apr 2016

I could go on all night with this but one last thing. The airport scene in Civil War is probably the best superhero action scene ever.

Its actually an origin story lite for him with lots of cameos from wakanda.
so pleased he nailed an accent too its essentially a perfect generic "african from africa town voice" and not jarring like idris in beasts or will in concussion
And stick around for the post post credits scene for more black panther

Overall it feels like avengers assemble x winter soldier in that it handles the vast cast as well as the former and is close to being as tight as the latter as to be a good movie.
I think I still prefer the tightness of winter soldier but cant wait to see this again

Go see it. You will not be disappointed

On the way to the movie I was telling my 14 year old son the key to a good superhero movie is getting the alter ego right. The way the scene played out felt like I was back reading the comics as a kid. absolutely, wonderfully brilliant writing and acting between the two characters there. Peter acts EXACTLY like that in a group of his superpowered peers/idols, and it plays out wonderfully in and out of the suit.

After the movie my son said 'I guess you got your Peter Parker now Dad'. Damn right son...damn right

Not sure I'd put it #1 overall for Marvel but it's up there.

I was a little nervous because I thought the first act was a bit slow and I thought they could have done more with the early action scenes (the WS/Cap/Black Panther sprint in the tunnel was good but could have been amazing) but once it got going, it was a blast. Also, they were able to inject more humor later in the film, which (for me) makes it much better.

Spidey was the star. Chadwick was the man. Mackie and Sebastian Stan's chemistry was awesome.

Fun flick. Definitely worth checking out.

I thought the beginning was a little too slow. I actually found myself being worried about the pacing at times. But overall I loved it. I think Winter Soldier might still be the better movie though.

That was at the end of Winter Soldier. By the end of Age of Ultron, he had resurfaced and was with them all in the new Avengers base.

They used the SHIT outta his very limited abilities. I want an interview with the person who planned all his moves because I didn't give a shit about Falcon before this movie, can't stand Mackie, but I was so hype at everything he did this time.

In Winter Soldier he was basically a retired soldier who WAS a "formerly athletic, pudgy face nigga in his late 30s". He was getting lapped up by Cap trying to get some exercise in. Joined up with Cap because he believed in him. He brought out the Falcon wings and was rusty as heck, but still did a good job considering all that.

But by the time we see him in Civil War he's been running with Cap for a couple years side by side doing missions all across the world. So yeah, he's in way better shape, and yeah he has a ton more moves while flying and fighting.

and its also interesting how previous movie setups are now paying off; we've switched from payoffs to comic book nerds to payoff to fans of the MCU...it really is a UNIVERSE now.

The Russos made it look easy and even with it's genre flaws its surprising how much they made it work..

**SPOILERS**

This movie was as overstuffed as anything as we've seen with 12 heros plus side characters jokeying around...but their sense of pacing (and a kick ass editor) made everyone feel like they got their time to shine. It's why it feels leaner then BvsS and even Ultron (notice how more fleshed out and real Wanda felt here in comparison to there)

And while it suffers from the generic comic book badguy problem the genius is when the plot shows all its cards in the final confrontation it wasnt about world domination cliches but earned revenge. You had all the characters, badguy included, equal in the feels. Shit involved missles and robot arms, but its the kind of final confrontation you couldda had in a close knit thriller.

Its why the last battle hit so hard even though it had 1/5th of the theatrics of the airport battle royale.

You knew why everyone was there, why they took the sides they did, and why they made the choices they did. It was overstuffed but incredibly easy to follow from both a logistical *and* emotional perspective. Which, needless to say, rules.

It's why people love Marvel movies-- they so transparently love their characters, and they are deeply deeply concerned about the audience's experience in regards to knowing/understanding where they're coming from.

Can't watch GoT with her, The Wire was really hard. But she's got no problems with the Marvel universe in general.

Just IMO though.

It works so well because at this point we're wholly invested in these characters and, as mentioned, the motivation was clear and unwavering from the jump. Nobody gave a flying fart about Bats and Supes fighting because we were never given a reason to care, let alone any kind of sensible explanation. Even if you walked into Civil War cold without seeing any of the other MCU movies, you get why they are fighting on a few levels.

Yes, I agree about Zemo. I actually really loved him as a bad guy - naturally these movies always feel they have to deliver a bigger villain that the movie before it delivered but this one was actually perfect. The only problem with that finale was when Stark reconvenes with Cap and Bucky to capture Zemo, I'm very aware that they'll end up turning on each other because of the scenes from the trailer so I was watching it trying to figure what the catalyst would be.

The comparison with BvS is interesting in that with both movies, you assume the leads will do battle but then team up to fight the real villain by the movie's end so 'Civil War' nailed a great swerve. Masterfully done.

but yeah, it's great and I'll be checking it out again. There's a lot of things they could have fucked up by trying to keep a personal story the focus while mixing in a bunch of other folks, but they didn't. Also nice to see them keep just light enough of a tone while not letting every movie end in a rah-rah victory lap. There was a lot to digest here so they let it breath. Well done.

I think the only place I really take away points from Civil War is some of the earlier scenes. There are some pacing issues. Winter Soldier is just official tissue all the way through.

Whereas in BvS, we got the Waynes and Bruce with the bats. Again.

Marvel's inherent trust in its audience is one of the major reasons why their cinematic universe works.

Here are the two spin off films I want: a Spiderman and Ant Man team up, and a feature length road comedy with Cap, Bucky and Sam in a VW Bug.

The previous one was too much of an ass (think him cowering before the random crook with gun in the first ASM).

This one was irritating little brother.

Also, it was interesting how they really showed how strong Spidey is compared to "normal" enhanced humans. Sometimes in the comics it felt like he wasn't in the same weight class power-wise. In this he seems like a true powerhouse that belongs in the group.

God that was amazing. See what happens when you give your characters actual reasons behind why they're fighting? LOVED Spidey, BP and Ant Man. And it was smart to keep the end fight smaller, as there was no way to go bigger than the airport scene.

When Tony is like, "Who are you?" I lost it at Rudd's disappointed reaction.

This movie was way too much fun from beginning to end.

I think Spidey and BP were in it enough to have
stolen the show

Antman was in it enough for a super dope cameo

And they finally got Spidey right.

Everything was dope about this. Even Mackie Luther King wasn't shitty.

Ant Man was dope too.

Great movie. I'm probably gonna see it again.

May Parker is traditionally shown and played as a bit older, not as MILF-bait. Rosemary Harris fit the bill perfectly. Sally Field was a weird choice, but was fine (didn't realize how old she was in real life). Marisa just seems too young.

On the other hand we are getting a younger version of Peter Parker, so I suppose a younger Aunt May makes sense. And hey, somebody else for RDJ to bounce off of, so...

someone having an aunt as old as their grandma is a bit unusual. i mean i guess she could be his great aunt but they never say that. Marisa Tomei kinda makes more sense. and they did reference it a bit.

I didn't realize her and Downey Jr. dated back in the day.

I do also like the dynamic shift of switching Aunt May to someone who might have a life rather than someone who just sits around waiting to give sage advice.

For decades May was an older woman, almost grandmotherly, with all gray to emphasize the point. Rosemarie was just about perfect. I really like Sally Field, but the hair was probably what didn't work as well for me (like, why is Maggie Wyczenski playing Pete's aunt?). But putting her in a gray wig wouldn't work. Ultimately, if they get the Peter/Sipdey thing right, and it looks like they might, LisaRay could me Aunt May and zero fucks would be given

And not a corny trope.

She's probably in her 40s or 50s, has attitude and
strength and resilience like many women from Queens.

And yes, she can look good.

Notice how she's like:

"Well, I hope you got your licks in" in response to
the black eye.

She's a younger, cooler aunt. She's obviously protective,
but still a modern woman.

Tomei is actually from Brooklyn, too, so can nail the NYC
sensibility of the character

This film handled the premise of superheroes fighting each other SO much better. And it's really the same premise of the collateral damage from fighting bad guys putting the good guys against each other.

But in Civil War it's so much more believable. They went with Iron Man being the one willing to sign with the government. And yeah they had him meet Alfre Woodard who blamed him for her son's death, but beyond that we have to remember that everything that happened with Ultron was directly because of what he did. He created Ultron who them caused all that destruction, so it makes sense that the world would be upset with the Avengers, and that he would be feeling the guilt from what happened. While in BVS it doesn't really make sense how pissed the world is with Superman since the collateral damage from MOS was him saving all of humanity from getting wiped out by Zod.

There's a ton to unpack in Civil War with revenge and how the characters deal with thoughts of revenge being a common theme throughout. But wow...they did such a great job on this movie.

The way they managed the over-arching story yet still included so many character specific and depth moments...just masterful with that balance, and then still keeping the pace and script extremely tight, some great shots and moments. The only thing that compares in terms of executing an ensemble this well is Guardians.

Lastly...the two newest characters: Spidey and Black Panther. The former, nailing the perfect amount of youthfulness but still showing how powerful he is (highlighted when he just stops Bucky's punch dead in its tracks and then the ensuing comment). The latter...it's hard for me to even express the how beautifully that character was played by Bozeman and the amount of depth + uniqueness.

What a film.

FOX better step up to the plate in their movies. I am not a big Spidey fan at all. I didnt like the Maguire movies they were just way to campy for me. I didnt even bother with the reboot. But damn his action sequences were fucking great. Everything about him was perfect. I dont think FOX needs to promote the next Spider Man movie at all. This was all the promotion they needed. Black Panther was fucking awesome. Man this movie was so fucking good. The airport scene was great. But the final showdown was so hard to watch. So much emotion. So so good.

while Fox/Sony is distributing. I don't know the specifics of the deal but based on Kevin Feige's comments a couple weeks ago Marvel has all creative control over Spiderman. Sony/Fox is still distributing and "making" the film. Maybe that means they are handling finances and such while Marvel is doing the story and working on the actual film. That would make sense because anything that happens in a Spidey film could affect the entire MCU, so it must all be part of the deal allowing Spidey to appear in MCU films.
Whatever it is the quality control is gonna be up to Marvel standards.

And that's the scene of Stark showing up at Peter Parker's apartment and sharing a 5 minute conversation with him. There's so much real humor and heart in that scene that the excitement became palpable in the theater. A little kid next to me, couldn't have been older than 5 or 6, said "he's Spider-Man!" when he shot the web in the bed room. Oh man that whole sequence works so well and lights the fuse for The Fight, easily the most entertaining15 minutes of any superhero movie ever.

You think about what they were able to do here and it makes the movie that much more of a feat. Besides making something that was a hell of a lot of fun to watch, they achieved in

- introducing Black Panther and giving him a motive that anyone could empathize with

- introducing a new Spider-Man in less than five minutes and in a way that feels so refreshingly contemporary (OF COURSE he would be a viral sensation!)

- giving the villain a valid REASON that wasn't just "F Tony Stark"

- adding a whole new layer of angst to Tony Stark that didn't feel ham fisted. We've watched that character for nearly 10 years, and yet still when the big reveal goes down we can't help but feel for him. Arrogant, rich, and still capable of being wounded like anyone else.

The one thing I found random was Black Widow's sudden change of heart in the airplane hanger, but maybe that was foreshadowed beforehand or explained after and I just missed it. Her flip seemed to lack explanation whereas everything up to that point had been painted so clearly; meanwhile, in a fight pitting two sides of five or so people against each other, there's not a single player in the scene who doesn't have a logical "horse in the race" reason.

I don't know where they go from here. I mean I guess it will be fun when the Guardians eventually meet the Avengers, or if this new Spider-Man ever cameos in the Hell's Kitchen Netflix universe or whatever (unlikely I know, just thinking of ideas that could raise the bar.)

This is the best movie they've made to date, and they've made some pretty kick ass flicks so far. We'll see if Infinity War can continue the run, but if it can't that's ok- at least we'll have gotten this masterpiece in the run up to that point.

A kid yelling, he's spider man! Appreciated that a lot more than the girl next to me who talked through the whole thing to no one in particular. She did say "he's a titan!" about Ant-Man which was kinda funny.

I saw it in Astoria and the QUEENS title card got a lot of respect.

I noticed the same thing about Widow. It seemed like there was additional dialog between her and Black Panther that was cut out. At the end of the airport scene she defends her actions by answering a question no one asked.

it makes sense, it's dramatic, and we can have a fight without power levels coming too much into play because almost everyone is pulling their punches.

most of the time, this would be a rout for team captain, but spiderman being a kid new to the game (and fanboying), banner and thor out of the picture, and t'challa operating with incorrect information meant the teams worked.

black widow's ambivalence is where all of them would be eventually except war machine. end of the day: they all know better than to believe the worldview the accord represents. tony wouldn't even have a team if romanov, rhodey, and vision weren't by their natures even more law and order than he is. (and it says a lot that other characters with statist backgrounds like sam, carter, and barton didn't even need to be convinced.)

but you can't control the variables (vision's shit laser luck). people don't have perfect information. and the people giving the orders (sec state and tony) aren't any less prone to passionate fuckups than the people they're supposed to keep in line.

mostly, tony is just obviously, once again, full of shit and working out his issues like a playground bully. motherfucker should have gone to that jail and put his ass in a cell at the end of the movie.

Banner and Rogers. After Winter Soldier, when she actually needed him to SAVE her life, and he did so in the most difficult of circumstances, you get the sense that he became one of the few people who's back she'd always have at the end of the day. This isn't to say she and Barton weren't tremendously close and yes he did her a big solid when he was supposed to kill her and helped redeem her, but she probably wasn't as VULNERABLE as she was when Hydra blew up the old SHIELD facility.

She was never totally comfortable with the Accords, she was trying to make the peace and keep the family together. she even told Steve when he said "are you going to arrest me?" she said "no, but someone will." She flew out to Peggy's funeral to be there for him. Their relationship just became really really special, in both nearly dying then finding out that the SHIELD they were working with was a sham, kind of cemented their bond.

Even during the fight, they never squared off. You get the sense that they were avoiding that like the plague.

I don't believe she planned to wait for Bucky and Steve to get to the jet, but once it was clear they would be, she was going to do what was necessary to see that they made it.

That 5 minute scene just about crushed 5 movies worth of Peter Parker portrayals. You could feel that scene was genuine on two different levels, both in character (Peter talking to Stark) and actor (Holland working with RDJ). That's chemistry you can't fake and is absolutely beautiful to see

She's got one hand on the wheel to steer.

Widow was playing the long game. There was no flip. That's why Cap contacted her when he was going after Bucky. He knew she had solidarity with him when she came to the funeral. Plus she and Bucky have history, thus her remark to him during their tussle.

Just IMO though.

Widow was telegraphed. I didn't catch it until later, which I'll mention after:

#1 She jumped on board a liiiiiiiiiiiitle too quick for someone who is a spy and strategist.

#2 She featured heavily in the last Cap movie. She luh Cap.

#3 She showed up to his old girl's funeral just to give him a hug.

#4 She stays doing undercover shit.

#5 That part of the fight when she asks Hawkeye, "Are we still friends," and he says "it depends on how hard you hit me?" It was cute on its own, but then later when Wanda tells Hawkeye she noticed he was pulling his punches...and then Widow helps Cap?

Sure, it could still seem kinda iffy, right?

Until you wonder to yourself why the fuck Hawkeye came out of retirement to help Cap in this shit.

He didn't.

He came out because of his loyalty to Widow. She needed someone to pair off with in a big fight.

After Cap saved her she asked him if he'd trust her if the shoe was on the other foot. A big part of their deal in Winter Soldier was solidifying the trust that paid off in Civil War. They've laid so many subtle seeds in earlier movies. Great stuff

...probably at least 3.
They pulled this off wonderfully....so many characters, including two 'new' ones, yet it didn't feel too cramped at all. so effin well done!

i won't repeat much of al of the good things about this movie that have already been mentioned above, suffice it t say that yeah, i agree....

but i gotta give props to Bozemans portrayal of Tch/BP...man...the quickness which i felt the emotion and soul of his character is, i believe, mostly a testament to the actors skill at balancing the regal with the humanity....soo well done.

also props to the introduction of the 'real' spidey....the whole scene in Queens with Stark and Peter....perfectly executed...just perfect. (and also, put me down in the column of those who gives a thumbs up to Tomei's hot-aunt-May....then again i've been crushing on Tomei since like, forever, so....)

and the fight scenes....and i mean ALL of em....the choreography and orchestration was great...

oh yeah and high five/fist bump to Paul Rudds AntMan....dude nearly steals the show in the small amount of screen time he has...man, that there is some genius casting

but yeah...this movie was a ball, extremely well executed, and supremely satisfying all the way around...it went by so fast. i actually wish it was a little longer (maybe to get a little more of the team tension moments leading up to the battle)...but other than that, i just don't see how this could have been much better....

i'll be going to see this in the Theater at least two more times for sure...

(SPOILERS)

Black Panther was awesome, seeing Spider-Man with everyone else was awesome, and Giant Man FTW!

The stars of the show though were Cap and Bucky, and that is what makes this movie stand above everything else.

That said, everyone got something to do despite there being more than a dozen main characters. It never felt overstuffed.

The humor was perfect.

The airport battle was the best thing in any MCU film to date.

I think I have come to the conclusion though that The Winter Soldier is my favorite MCU film to date though. The action in that movie Raid-like while maintaining the comic book atmosphere and political thriller intrigue.

The Avengers is still the one that had my eyes the widest and goosebumps tingling for most of it since it was the one that had everyone together for the first time.

This could all change again once I see CW again.

Great experience!

Has anyone else thought that WB/DC should just sub out the live action films to Marvel Studios? Could you imagine Marvel Studios presents... The Justice League! Silliness aside, we all know Marvel would make it great.

Everybody has pretty much said my thoughts on here already. Spiderman was awesome. Paul FUCKING RUDD is a superhero man. He steals the show.

Gotta give props to the guy playing the villain. I would of lost it if he donned his Baron Zemo outfit at the end and just peaced out. He did fantastic job.

In response to Reply # 0

'Captain America: Civil War' Shows Exactly Why 'Batman V. Superman' Failed

Paul Tassi , CONTRIBUTOR
News and opinion about video games, technology and the internet

This weekend, Captain America: Civil War became the latest Marvel film to open as both a critical darling (90% on Rotten Tomatoes) and a box office smash hit ($181 million domestic). That means four of the six highest box office openings of all time are now Marvel movies released in the last five years.

But past being yet another commercial success, Civil War is just an exceptional film in every way. As many have noted, despite the “Captain America” in the title, this is effectively an Avengers film. Yes, it subtracts Thor and the Hulk, and the central conflict doesn’t involve the end of the world, but with its expansive cast and blockbuster scope, it’s an Avengers movie, plain and simple.

With the film receiving such positive reception, it’s easy to think back to just a month and a half ago when DC’s Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice debuted. While the film made a lot of money (though probably not as much as it would have liked), it was torn apart by critics and many fans. Now, looking at Civil War, it’s even easier to see why.

It isn’t just that Captain America: Civil War is another fun, funny, colorful, high-quality Marvel movie, while DC’s offering is dour and gloomy and not as well-made. Rather, the two actually share a central storyline, heroes turning against each other. Only Civil War is a roadmap for how to do this kind of thing correctly, and it serves to show precisely how Batman V. Superman mangled the exact same concept.

And what exactly did Civil War do right that BvS bungled? Where to even start…

Spoilers for Captain America: Civil War and Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice begin

Civil War’s Central Conflict is Earned and Coherent

Civil War and Batman V. Superman aren’t only just about heroes fighting one another, one of the core issues is the same as well, heroes being responsible for collateral damage. It’s the reason Bruce Wayne hates Superman (as he watches his building get demolished in the Zod fight) and why the Avengers are split down the middle by the Sokovia Accords (based on the destructive events of Avengers 1 and 2, Winter Soldier, and now Scarlett Witch accidentally blowing up a building in the opening of Civil War).

The problem? One of these conflicts has been years in the making, while the other was developed over the course of an hour, at best. We have almost a decade invested into these specific Marvel characters at this point, so when Iron Man turns against Captain America after being allies for so long, it actually means something. We feel the weight of that conflict, while in Batman V. Superman, these are characters we essentially just met, and the idea that they would be slugging it out with each other almost has to rely on some sort of stupid misunderstanding rather than years of character development that’s led to this point.

That’s the other great thing about Civil War. The conflict actually makes sense, and you can see both sides of the argument. While I think Captain America is on the “more right” side, as it certainly does not seem like a good idea to simply let the UN dictate precisely what the Avengers do or do not do, Tony’s side isn’t nonsensical. He feels crushing guilt from all these events, and while the Sokovia Accords themselves are flawed (watch them get thrown out the window the second Thanos shows up), it’s his way of trying to do something, anything to absolve himself of shame. And if something goes wrong the next time, maybe he can blame the UN instead of himself.

Tony’s side of the story is particularly fascinating. It’s the guilt of the deaths combined with a recent split from Pepper, and just when you think he and Captain America get past the Sokovia spat, the film pulls a hard left to reveal that a brainwashed Bucky killed Stark’s parents years ago, and Captain America kept some of the details covered up.

Now that is an effective reason to have a superhero vs. superhero brawl. Captain America tries to explain to Tony that Bucky didn’t know what he was doing, but Stark just says “I don’t care, he killed my mom.” That kind of motivation works. That’s what creates believable conflict with actual stakes to it.

In contrast, we have the entirely incoherent struggle of Batman V. Superman. It starts out the same way, with Bruce Wayne believing Superman is dangerous due to the innocents that die in his wake, and because if he ever turned against humanity, he’d be impossible to stop. The problem is that his solution is to just straight up murder Superman, which, even if this is a new version of Batman, goes against everything we’ve ever known about the character.

For Superman’s part, he doesn’t really even seem to have motivations, other than getting people to stop hating him, and stopping specific threats when they pop up. That’s in part because the character barely has forty lines in his own movie, so how much motivation can you really establish there? (Fun fact: Spider-Man has more lines in Civil War than Superman did in BvS). Making him fight Batman through…essentially blackmail, is poor motivation, and though the fight itself was exciting, the reasons for it were stupid. Civil War bests BvS in many ways, but in this area in particular.

Civil War’s Villain Has Clear Motives and a Creative Plan

Honestly, Batman V. Superman’s biggest problem wasn’t even either of the two heroes, it was its villain, Lex Luthor. Not just because Jessie Eisenberg’s portrayal seemed off (Mark Zuckerberg tripping on meth), but because nothing he did made any sense.

Why does Lex hate Superman? We’re never given a reason, other than vague speeches about gods and power. Why does Lex want Superman to murder Batman, someone else he doesn’t know at all? Why does Lex build Doomsday? Why does Lex more or less just want to murder and destroy everything? None of this is ever made clear. Lex, one of the DC’s smartest, most capable villains, is reduced to a poor man’s version of the Joker, creating anarchy for anarchy’s sake.

In Civil War, Zemo is an entirely different story. If you didn’t even know the guy’s name by the end of the movie, I wouldn’t blame you, nor should you be expected to recognize him in the comics. He’s a nobody. He’s a Sokovian spy whose family was killed in the chaos sowed by the Avengers fighting Ultron. He wants revenge.

It’s a simplistic motive, but Zemo ends up being probably one of the best and most effective villains I’ve ever seen in a superhero movie. I love Loki as much as the next person, but Zemo’s plan to split the Avengers through an almost impossibly simple plan is genius. He frames Bucky for the UN explosion, igniting tensions already set aflame by the Sokovia Accords, which by itself practically cleaves the team in half. He re-activates Bucky for real this time, reinforcing the split, and leading to an all-out brawl between the two sides. And then in his final stroke, just when you think he’s about to activate an army of super-soldiers for a big brawl that reunites the Avengers, he simply kills the potential supervillains instead, reveals what he knows about Stark’s parents’ death, and watches Captain America and Tony Stark almost murder each other.

He understands that he has no real strength himself, and could never hope to fight the Avengers directly, so he makes them fight each other. He is the most subtle supervillain that’s ever been in a movie like this, but in terms of actually achieving what he set out to do, he’s one of the most successful, and one that’s done the most direct damage to the team, even if no cities were leveled in the process.

Civil War is Expansive but Not Bloated

I mentioned before that this is effectively an Avengers film, given the massive size of the cast. And it is massive. Yes, Captain America and Tony Stark headline, but the film also prominently features War Machine, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Black Panther, Falcon, Ant Man, Vision, Scarlet Witch and Spider-Man as heroes. Hulk and Thor are missing, but that’s actually more heroes than the Avengers films themselves.

Somehow, despite this, the film does not feel bloated or overcrowded. It isn’t just because we enjoy seeing these heroes slug it out (the airport fight is one of the best in superhero movie history), but because when these characters are given scenes, they’re tight and effective. Black Panther is expertly woven into the narrative throughout, and somehow, with everything else the movie is doing, it serves as a great set-up for his own standalone film. Vision and Scarlet Witch are given touching, sad moments together. Ant Man steals the show with a half dozen lines of joke-dialogue. Spider-Man is introduced in one of the movie’s best scenes as Tony Stark meets Peter Parker, and is the most fun part of the main fight. And of course, the main conflict between Cap and Iron Man throughout the film is powerful and effective. It’s a lot going on, but the directors have juggled it all expertly.

It’s the opposite in Batman V. Superman. This is a movie that feels overcrowded with just three heroes. While I may have had no issue with the Gal Gadot’s version of Wonder Woman as she was presented, the fact remained that the movie did not give her an actual reason to be in the film. She felt tacked-on, and her biggest moments include opening a bunch of email attachments to discover other future JLA members, and participating in the Doomsday fight in a way that negated most of the conflict they were trying to set up (If Wonder Woman can chop up Doomsday with her magic sword, why exactly do they need this Kryptonite spear?). The film was already bursting at the seams with just Clark and Bruce, but Diana Prince was extra baggage by herself. I can’t imagine how a full JLA film would feel at this point.

Civil War’s Resolution is Uncomfortable, but Logical

Again, Civil War takes the expected ending, the Avengers reunite to fight Zemo’s super soldiers, and turns it on its head, as Captain America and Iron Man brutally attack each other. In the end, there’s no repairing the fracture, not fully, anyway. Captain America has to literally break his captured Avenger friends out of prison, and Tony Stark is left to pick up the pieces at home base, with most of his team having deserted him.

Even if it’s obvious where this is heading, the Avengers being forced to come together to beat Thanos in Infinity War, I like that Civil War didn’t try to mend all its fences. Given everything that happened, it wouldn’t have made sense. In contrast, we have the now-infamous “Martha” moment in Batman V. Superman, where the two stop fighting because Batman realizes their mothers have the same name. Five minutes later, Batman is rescuing the mother of the man he was just trying to kill. It makes close to no sense, and by the end, everyone is best friends.

Of course, that isn’t how it ends, which is another problem with BvS. Killing Superman for some attempt at shock value accomplishes nothing. No one believes that Superman will die two movies into the new DCCU. Hell, even the movie itself can’t resist teasing his resurrection before the movie even ends. That was just Zack Snyder wanting to kill him to build in more Christ mythology (because Superman definitely needs more of that) and to do something in keeping with the “darkness” of his created universe.

Civil War easily could have pulled an ultimate “shock value” card and killed Captain America or Tony Stark (Cap is actually killed in the comics storyline). Or they could have pulled a Harry Potter and killed a few minor characters in the conflict, like Hawkeye or Vision. They did neither. The biggest physical casualty is War Machine, who will probably be fine thanks to Tony’s tech, but the film lets the biggest death speak for itself, the death of the Avengers as a team. And they didn’t need to literally murder Tony or Cap to make that point.

Civil War is a phenomenal film, and very well might be Marvel’s best ever, which is really saying something. There’s a reason movies like this are held up to a gold standard, and at this point, DC is going to be lucky if they can produce a film that’s even half this effective. That’s not fanboy talk, that’s just coming from someone who likes well-made movies, great characters and coherent stories. And right now, only Marvel has all of those things. We’ll see what the future holds.

I have to give them props. How were these dudes even were picked to direct Winter Soldier after only tv shows and You, Me and Dupree to their credit? Yet they have now directed possibly the 2 best Marvel films to date and set to direct Infinity Wars. Marvel just can't miss for the most part.

The action scenes were great especially the airport and tunnel chase. I'm ready to see this a 2nd time now.

We see that at the end of Ant-Man. I assumed that was why Lang was on that team, in conjunction with the whole "never trust a Stark" thing that gets mentioned.

In response to Reply # 196

1. Captain America and Falcon ask you for help.

2. To work against Tony Stark, who your mentor hates.

3. To prevent registration of superheroes, which you as an ex-con would not be a fan of since they'd probably deem you a threat/risk.

4. To help a wrongly accused friend of Cap, which you'd probably feel some kin to having been in prison before.

5. To stop the UN from having control and possibly being able to demand the formula for the Pym particle, which is what you already risked your life from stopping once.

6. Or just having to work for a government at all, which probably isn't high on your list given your standing as a criminal, your mentor's distrust of the government, and the whole SHIELD being infiltrated by Hydra stuff.

It's not like being with his daughter meant that he was retiring from being Ant-Man. He was finally able to be someone she could look up to BECAUSE he was Ant-Man and he was standing up for a wrongly accused guy and people not wanting to hand their fates to the government. I think there are a lot more reasons to say yes than no.

But if you don't buy it...

8. Maybe it was his daughter's weekend with the mom so he didn't have shit else to do.

He's clearly going to do the hero thing. And the very hero thing his movie ended in was at Falcon's request.

He's star struck and wouldn't turn down the opportunity to be a part of the action for anything

He's fucking Ant-Man. Cap broke him out, so he will be able to go WHERE he needs to WHEN he needs to, unlike most of the others.

It will be interesting to see how the evidence of Zemo's conspiracy affects the Sochovia accords since his actions were behind the events that led to the airport brawl anyway, as well as Hydra's manipulation of the Winter Soldier. One would think the documents Widow released had established that. I can't see that, or the possibility of Hydra still at work totally going away even if Thanos is the main issue in the Infinity War.

He's going to have a distrust of the mass organised storm trooper type organisation that the accords represent, especially under an iron man toting Tony Stark and war machine that's got to give Scott Yellowjacket flashbacks. That, and he's a huge Cap fan.

You're exactly right. That's the exchange verbatim from the film. He agrees with Cap's side, he distrusts Stark/the system, and he knows what he has to do.

He also, regarding his daughter, probably doesn't think they'll lose and that he'll go to a huge underground prison. Just a thought on that too.

Ok. So Alfre Woodard's character told Tony about her son that died in Sokovia, right? BUT! She is also playing a character in the upcoming Luke Cage series on Netflix. However, when I looked up her characters in the CA film and the Luke Cage show: they are two different people! I thought it was weird considering how the Netflix shows are supposed to be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Except the two characters are from two different cinematic universes (Fox and Marvel Studios).

But, as others have stated, there were a couple of characters in the MCU that were played by the same actor/actress before this film and Luke Cage.

I just thought that it was odd considering the CW film and the Luke Cage series debut in the same year.

and I didn't see BvS until after watching this

I think both were strong movies for the genre, CW really took the fight scenes to another level but this "flawless" and "didn't waste a second" shit is completely laughable, it had unnecessary moments & (ironically for the folks trashing BvS) kinda took itself too seriously

It was very dope & better again but the gap between the quality of the two films is way overstated

But that's the age we live in, everybody is extra with everything

I enjoyed BvS in the face of its flaws. I can ride with it. I think people overstate those flaws but thats entirely subjective.

I thoroughly enjoyed CW and found its flaws to be mere footnotes.

By every objective metric, CW is a vastly superior film. Cohesion of plot? Pacing? Supporting characters? Big fight scenes? Introduction of new characters? Casting choices? The list goes on.

CW only magilnified the faults of BVS IN ways that should alarm everyone associated with the property. CW is a clinic in summer popcorn filmmaking only Deadpool can hang with from this current crop. That doesn't make it a perfect movie but it certainly makes for a damn good one.

And the first week box office recepts weren't that different & WB will cake anyway, especially when the bluray hits

Which brings up the issue of how certain movies are tarnished & dismissed based off subjective critical reception by people who can type words

It's better in objective terms, not just subjective opinions.

The bit you wrote that "certain movies are tarnished & dismissed based off subjective critical reception by people who can type words" is asinine for that very reason.

Plus, that's the go-to whenever someone wants to downplay or deflect criticism without actually digging into the merits of that criticism.

"______ by people who can write words on a screen". Is such a weak dismissal of the critic while sidestepping the criticism that you may as well call everyone "player haters".

BvS is "tarnished" by very real and objective flaws starting with its inception, not the people who observe and discuss those flaws.

Should people who hated the film not be able to dismiss it when the film has what they believe to be glaring flaws in storytelling and character building?

You yourself have stated that CW is obviously a better film. Why is it so hard to think that there are a lot of people who liked CW more than you did while disliking BvS more as well?

You're basically telling people that they shouldn't dismiss BvS based on their opinion of the film because... you had a different opinion on the film. If you want to defend the film, go into that post and defend the film. No need to dismiss people's opinions.

Caught this on the second viewing. When Bucky's programing is triggered and he rampages out to escape and Widow tries to stop him, as he's choking her out, she goes, "You couldn't just recognize me?" (paraphrased).

Winter Soldier was one of Widows instructors in the comics.

they fought in CA:WS and also in that movie she mentioned a previous encounter with The Winter Soldier when he shot her.

"Five years ago I was escorting a nuclear engineer out of Iran, somebody shot at my tires near Odessa. We lost control, went straight over a cliff, I pulled us out, but the Winter Soldier was there. I was covering my engineer, so he shot him straight through me."

A movie with Superman, Batman, and Wonderman should be battling to be the #1 movie of all time, not struggling to make 1B.

Warner owns DC Comics, so it's not like they can just jettison their properties like Sony did with the creative rights to Spider-Man.

I think they'll downsize their budgets and expectations a bit. I mean, $850 million is nothing to sneeze at. The movie is still wildly profitable. They just might have to defer their billion dollar dreams for a while.

about the plot twist in Civil War two years ago. When Cap and Widow are talking to the Zola supercomputer and he explains that Hydra was within SHIELD, there's a montage of reports on Hydra assassinations which were all Winter Soldier hits. One of those was this - I hit pause and took a quick pic:

http://tinyurl.com/zvwxapf

So this was when Cap found out about Tony's parents, and I still didn't see it coming at ALL the first time I watched Civil War. Of course now there's plenty of people talking about it but I hadn't seen it mentioned in this post yet. I also found this Reddit thread from a year ago where they predicted everything that happened in CW:

In response to Reply # 0

Cause Raimi's Spider-Man was only 2/3rds good. Last one sucked.
Nolan's Batman also fell down on the third act.
Blade III should be burned.
X-Men the Last Stand was mishandled horribly.
Iron Man 2 was mediocre. Not bad to me, but just bland.

so that pretty much leaves Cap as the only major super hero thus far with three films that pretty much knocked it out the park.

I really liked the first one cause I didn't think they could pull it off for one, but the tone was pitch perfect. At the very least it's slightly above average. Then Winter Soldier and Civil war speak for themselves.

But then I realized that I still probably ranked it outside of the top 10 so I didn't bother.

But it deftly avoided the Superhero third movie curse (especially impressive since it is stuffed with people and that's usually the downfall of third movies) and is by far the best superhero trilogy.
