"Wild (Vallée, 2014)"

Be forewarned!!! This movie opens on a close up shot of Resse ripping off a toenail that falls off, so you might wanna skip the first five minutes.

But, as for the movie itself...I liked the journey, but didn't feel a connection when it was finished. And the juxtaposition of some of the flashbacks and of the shots of when she sees her mom in the wild were a little heavy handed. And to be honest, I think this film would've worked better had it been linear. Even I was creeped out by the Redneck perv. I was praying she wouldn't get raped.

Gotta say though Reese surprised me by how well she acted in this. Outside of Walk the Line, I never saw the appeal. And now that I saw her naked and that she still looks good naked, I'd beat.

But yea Reese is gonna get that nom.

Laura Dern might lock one too for Best Supporting. Maybe.

But the movie as a whole is good. Nothing to run out to see or write home about.

I was glad Skinny Pete didn't get the chance to do anything to her

the cgi fox annoyed the shit out of me

I liked how natural some of the flashbacks felt

I got chills when the little boy started singing

It's fine. They crank up the melodrama to 11 at times, and pour on the Life Lessons rather thickly some other times.

Witherspoon deserves the accolades, though. She's good in this.

This shit is kind of like Gravity but on earth, with the Mojave Desert in the role of Outer Space. Both are straight forward parables about people getting swallowed up by grief but ultimately conquering it.

Reese was great.

Loved the scenery of the hike.

It was heavy handed and melodramatic.

But still, solid.

I thought the structure would annoy me, but the editing is strong, Reese is surprisingly understated, and for a melodramatic biopic, you only feel the emotional manipulation intermittently.

Great year for Reese. I haven't been a fan frequently, but all praise this year is absolutely earned.

I thought tonally, they were very similar in certain scenes but surprisingly, DBC held up better in repeat viewings than I thought it would. Wild was strong, especially Reese, but I'm not sure it's THAT much better.

I can see why Academy voters ate up DBC (weight loss, hot-button topic, actor's showcase), but I thought DBC was okay at best. One or two truly good scenes in a film that I felt was disappointing in how it handled a truly interesting story.

Reese was very good, and Dern was too (and looking like she needs a Quarter Pounder or 3). I was entertained throughout, and expect nominations at least for the actresses, wouldn't be surprised if the director and film itself get love as well.

This is my kind of movie...I like melodrama as long as it's executed well. Seems like alot of ppl instantly equate melodramatic with bad, but I don't. I agree there were a couple parts that walk the line of going over-the-top (some of the sex/heroin scenes), but it comes back down and stays in control. There are also some scenes that could have easily gone over the top, but don't. Loved Laura Dern's character, made me think of my mom alot. Not really the circumstances as much as the nature of her character. I doubt she'll win awards but I'll be rooting for her.
