"Twin Peaks coming back?!?"

Lynch and Mark Frost both tweeted this:

Dear Twitter Friends: That gum you like is going to come back in style! #damngoodcoffee

https://twitter.com/DAVID_LYNCH/status/518060411690569730

https://twitter.com/mfrost11/status/518060486156230656

As they just released that bluray collection, I'm at a loss for what this could be other than a sequel.

Don't watch the full version of the pilot until you've watched the series. I think it is the international version.

You can watch that w/ FWWM. FWWM sucks, btw.

9 episodes will air in 2016 on Showtime (the only network Lynch and Frost took it to)

Frost and Lynch had the idea 3 years ago,

Cooper is back: https://twitter.com/Kyle_MacLachlan/status/519201373209260033

When Cooper tells his coworkers about his dream sequence in season 1, he says "I was 25 years older..."

During another dream sequence, Laura Palmer says "I'll see you again in 25 years."

How awesome is that? The show was airing in 1991.

I think they had to be, at minimum, aware of that 25 years connection.

It may explain why its coming out in 2016 rather than next year. Let's be honest, it's not like the cast is busy doing something else, and Lynch and Frost probably aren't too occupied either.

http://insidetv.ew.com/2015/01/12/kyle-maclachlan-twin-peaks/

The return of Twin Peaks has cast its star—and it’s exactly who you want.

Kyle MacLachlan will reprise his iconic role as FBI Agent Dale Cooper in Showtime’s reboot of ABC’s 1990 cult favorite drama about the murder of a homecoming queen in a small Northwest town.

The actor surprised critics by taking the stage at the Television Critics Association’s semi-annual press tour Monday, where MacLachlan handed a “damn good cup of coffee” to Showtime president David Nevins.

“I’m very excited to return to the strange and wonderful world of Twin Peaks,” said MacLachlan, dressed in a Cooper-style dark suit. “May the forest be with you.”

Series co-creator David Lynch will helm all of the nine episodes, which Showtime expects to air in 2016. Nevins wouldn’t say much about the new story other than Lynch and co-creator Mark Frost have been “very specific in promising closure, and that’s exciting.”
“From what I’ve seen, I think this going to live up to expectations—and then some,” Nevins said.

The executive said he “was kind of begging” Lynch and Frost when trying to convince them to do a reboot at Showtime. “And it felt like only way you could do it is to have David committing to
directing all of them and that’s what I was begging for,” he said.

“ something they’ve been toying with. And for David, 25 years was the magic number. There’s a reference in original, ‘I’ll see you in 25 years.'”

Nevins said Lynch seemed particular impressed by some of the Showtime executive’s “violent, weird” artwork in his office. “I think he liked that.”

why does this dude still care about money...he's old and probably has plenty tucked away. smh.

That being said, like all successful directors, he has a big ego. Therefore, Showtime should know they gotta feed it to make this work.

Dude has directed two whole movies in the '00s, and he's going to direct nine episodes of TV in one year? Never going to happen. He only directed six episodes total the first time around. I also think it's a miracle if he really has nine scripts written.

In response to Reply # 0

He's directing the entire season.

I can't help but feel like this was a publicity thing for them to get some free press.

How do they go from Lynch leaving over budget disagreements to wanting more episodes?

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/david-lynch-twin-peaks-showtime-796083

Updated: Showtime says Lynch will direct the whole thing, which will now consist of more than the nine episodes the cabler originally ordered.
How's this for a way to start the weekend: Showtime's Twin Peaks revival is all systems go.

Following a squabble with Showtime, David Lynch announced Friday via Twitter that he has resolved his salary and budgetary standoff with the premium cable network.

"Dear Twitter Friends, the rumors are not what they seem ..... It is !!! Happening again. #TwinPeaks returns on @SHO_Network," he wrote.

Not only is the stalemate over, but Showtime has committed to producing more than the nine episodes originally ordered.

"This damn fine cup of coffee from Mark and David tastes more delicious than ever," Showtime president David Nevins said in a statement Friday confirming the news. "Totally worth the extra brewing time and the cup is even bigger than we expected. David will direct the whole thing which will total more than the originally announced nine hours. Preproduction starts now!!”

The news comes a month and a half after Lynch announced that he was exiting Showtime's nine-episode revival over a salary dispute. He originally signed on to direct the project but noted that there was "not enough money offered to do the script the way I felt needed to be done."

Showtime already had a deal in place with Lynch and co-creator Mark Frost to bring back the cult hit with star Kyle MacLachlan for a run in 2016, with sources telling THR that the scripts had already been written. For its part, Showtime at the time noted that it "continues to hold out hope" that Twin Peaks can be brought back with both its creators at the helm.

Following Lynch's outburst, the cast teamed for a video backing the beloved director that went viral as part of a #SaveTwinPeaks campaign that said doing the show without Lynch is "like pies without cherries" in a nod to the cult series.

I halfway thought this was going to be sort of a pop culture event, but seems like they are content with just letting it be a cult thing.

Lynch (and Frost) must have total, complete control over this thing, which is simultaneously exciting and worrying. FWWM wasn't good, and his last movie, released 11 years ago, Inland Empire, was three hours of... to be honest, I don't even remember at this point. I just recall it being too confusing, dense, and very stream-of-consciousness - even by Lynch standards.

Wonder what Showtime is thinking at this point.

Compare how little we know about Twin Peaks compared to the new Alien and every other summer movie. I hope this starts a less is more trend when it's comes to promotion honestly.

I understand your trepidations though but I'm remaining optimistic. Frost is a really traditional and story driven writer and I think he's there mainly to make sure it doesn't turn into Inland Empire.

They released a trailer with actual footage:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vsdRG0mJj-w

At the very least, we know shooting it on HD wasn't a mistake.

Also this guy Johnny Jewel (dude who made some of the Drive score) just released an album which has songs that will be in the new season. Nobody's sure which or how many are on there though.

http://www.thefader.com/2017/05/11/johnny-jewel-windswept-twin-peaks-chromatics

I'm guessing the soundtrack will be a combo of some of this stuff (which really have a Twin Peaksy vibe without sounding like carbon copies) and Badalamenti's new and old stuff.

How much you enjoy Fire Walk with Me still seems like the best gauge if you'll like it or not. The weird digressions, hokey humor and surreal horror are all here along with a plot that moves at a surprisingly good pace. Some really freaky shit in here.

I never watched the prequel movie, so I can't comment on that. It's been awhile since I binged watched Twin Peaks, but from what I recall there was a general consistency until the finale when it just drifted off to this dark and weird place. I'm not sure yet if that's a good or bad thing. With that said, I thoroughly enjoyed that first ep and am all in on the new season.

This is some excellent uncut Lynch. I can imagine a fair number of folks would bail after episode 3 (if not 2), so I can definitely understand them putting up the first 4 right away, as 4 is the most "Twin Peaks" of the set.

And shoutout to the VFX intern that just finished the compositing tutorial in After Effects and got hired for this gig.

I flat-out refused to let myself have any expectations

I've just tried to act unbothered about the whole "Twin Peaks back" thing, and was gonna watch it as unbiased as possible

But HOLY shit I'm loving this

Watched the 2 first yesterday, and the 3rd and 4th episodes today

There's so much to process though, but IMO this is killing thus far. I've been super entertained by these 4 eps. Wally Brando though. ROFL

Keeping up with other TV shows, no matter how amazing they are (The Leftovers), just doesn't compare to the 4 episodes of Twin Peaks that I watched over the past couple of days. There's nothing like this on TV now, nor has there ever been as far as I know, and I can't wait to see how the season plays out.

Episode 3 was a masterpiece. So perfectly done and is up there with GOAT TV episodes like International Assassin & Ozymandias. I watched the whole thing in awe.

Great start to the season and if it's already this elite I am HYPED for 14 more episodes. Kyle McLachlan is acting his ass off by the way. Amazing physical work.

If you're thinking about watching this, but haven't seen the original and are intimidated by the 30 hour commitment to catch up, I'd say start with Fire Walk With Me first, rewatch or read about the ending of Season 2, then trust in David Lynch and get ready for some weird, scary, whimsical, one of a kind TV. Damn good TV.

Hope more of PTP starts watching this, as there's a ton to discuss.

It's moving slowly, but I knew it would. 18 one-hour episodes is alot. I think it's very similar to season 2 so far. Hundreds of characters, all kinds of randomness, plot points that may or may not go anywhere. I'm glad that the humor really ramped up after the first couple episodes, feels more like Twin Peaks now. Brain-dead Cooper is funny, but I want the old Cooper to come back soon.

Episode 5 has been my favorite so far. The doctor's radio show was classic shit. Unfortunately I was pretty bored with episode 6 other than a couple obvious, bizarre moments.

It really is impressive to see how many great actors signed on for this. I'm hoping Laura Dern and Harry Dean Stanton get alot of screen time, but I'm not so sure.

And I wasn't terribly attached to the original.

I stopped watching Fargo by about the third episode because I kept deciding I'd rather rewatch the latest episode of Twin Peaks. (And I love Fargo; I'll probably shoot through the rest of the season in this Twin Peaks hiatus week.)

I've even started listening to one of those stupid babble-about-the-latest episode podcasts, and it's making me want to rewatch the original series and Fire Walk With Me.

Let's face it, Lynch is gonna Lynch, and I would rather wait until the season's end before I start to evaluate it. He and Frost clearly aren't concerned with the expectations of fans, media, or Showtime. This is completely and utterly their vision and execution.

That said, and obviously I look forward to this every week, but I'm sort of falling in the middle with it so far. It seems most people are absolutely loving it or hating it.

Did anyone even mention Chester Desmond?

I don't remember all of what happened in FWWM, but didn't he touch the jade ring and immediately disappear?

I also remember that someone (him?) wrote "Let's Rock" on the windshield of a car, which Diane also famously said this season. Are we to take these points to mean that Chester Desmond was a tulpa? But if so, where is the real one?

It seems childish and goofy to say it as flatly as that. But I'm working hard to think of something more suspenseful, more funny, more endearing, better acted (particularly MacLachlan, Lynch, and Robert Forster), more surprising, more ambitious...

I understand why it's not getting as much attention as it deserves. Not enough people have Showtime. The incredibly slow pacing (which I love) would drive a lot of people batty. And if you haven't seen the original show you wouldn't get nearly as much out of the new one (and while the original is rightly beloved, it definitely shows its age, and it often pushed the goofy melodrama too far for my taste).

But even if you're ambivalent about the original (as I was, though at times it showed the same greatness), it's worth the investment to prepare for this.

I don't know if I want them to try for a fourth season or just work out a perfect closing to it here. My guess is they're shooting for the latter, and I expect them to deliver it, though I have absolutely no idea what that might be.

Bout to spark up and watch the Season 2 finale. The first season is one of the best things I've ever seen, the aesthetic is just untouchable. Shit fell off a cliff after S02E09 tho, it went from brilliantly playing with soap opera tropes to becoming a straight up soap opera.

I'm still surprised something like this was on primetime on ABC. The "Bob" stuff is creepy as fuck NOW, can't imagine how audiences reacted in 1990.

There's one scene (involving a song about sycamore trees) that gave me chills. Totally makes up for all the fluff in the second half of season 2.

Also, there are so many little ways they found to match up the new series with this episode. The 25 year wait, and the loss of a few of the original actors, obviously wasn't in their plan. But I think they found a way to turn every challenge into an opportunity.

gore/blood, too many characters/storylines/loose ends, not enough soap opera stuff....

i mean...i understand some of these complaints...this is definitely not the same twin peaks that aired back in the 90s and i don't like the direction they took for certain characters (Mr.C above all)... but each week i find myself glued to the screen and i'm sure the finale will be glorious and worth the wait.

This shit is actually coming together.

I'm still basically bewildered about the details of what's happening, but we pretty clearly started the closing act tonight.

There was speculation that the girl who ate the frogbug at the end of episode 8 might have been a young Sarah Palmer. I guess we have confirmation of that now (or, at least, we're supposed to think we do).

And the frogbug appears to be the same (in species, at least?) as "the experiment", the creature who spat out Bob in episode 8, and who killed those poor sexy New Yorkers in episode 1.

Audrey DOES appear to exist in "the real world", I guess. I was getting really suspicious after episode 13.

What the hell does Andy know now that they haven't told us yet? Remember: Andy was the one who first realized how to find the entrance to the Red Room in the original series.

The eyeless woman from episode 1! What the fuck? I can't WAIT to find out what's going on with her. I've heard some speculation that that's Josie Packard. It's a different actress, obviously, but if they want to claim she didn't age (like Major Briggs), then they'd have to use a different actress. For those who don't remember: in the original show Josie disappeared rather mysteriously and was apparently trapped in a doorknob at the Great Northern.

The Great Northern, where there's now that weird hum. A hum that now appears to be coming from the electrical transformer. (It's been established for a while now that Black Lodge people travel around using the electrical grid.)

WTF at the random Londoner with super strength? Are he and Nadine gonna team up and beat evil Cooper at arm wrestling now?

They are not dancing around the fact that David Bowie played Philip Jeffries, and they are making Philip Jeffries absolutely central to the story. There is no confirmation that they got Bowie in even for a cameo before he died. But there have been other surprises in the cast, and if I remember right they did do most of the filming well before he died. And they made a point of getting a few other people in for at least very brief cameos. Wouldn't that be fucking something if David Bowie showed up in episode 18.

What else just happened? Holy Fuck? I'm gonna go watch this again, right now.

Oh, and "I had another Monica Bellucci dream." LMAO. Gordon Cole is my fucking hero.

We now finally know something about what "Blue Rose" is about.

and

Janey E is Diane's sister!

Straight to Vegas for the FBI team, you'd think. But knowing how this show goes, that probably means Gordon and Dale/Dougie finally meet again maybe three episodes from now.

Fire means electricity, according to Hawk. And electricity is how the extra dimensional beings get around. So The Fireman seems to be the one in charge of moving people around.

I'm having a little conversation with myself about this episode, lol. But there's just so much that happened here, and after such a long wait!

I don't even know what to say. Everything is perfect, nothing is predictable.

Richard Horne
(Okay, everybody predicted his identity, and in retrospect what happened to him was obvious, but I didn't see it coming.)

What the hell happened with Hutch and Chantal? There's definitely more to that story than we saw.

Dale Cooper, awake!, and back to form.

Poor Janey E and Sunny Jim. But it looks like Dougie Jones will return. And hopefully he'll be a cheap imitation of the good Dale, not the bad one.

I'm sorry for being suspicious of Bushnell. He's a good dude.

Diane...

Audrey Horne -- I was convinced she wasn't real, then they briefly convinced me she was. And then, damn.

She was in a coma at the end of the original series, and one of the leading hypotheses about her weird scenes was that she was dreaming while still in the coma. And then there was that sound when she was looking in the mirror. Earlier, Sunny Jim asked if comas were related to electricity. That was foreshadowing.

The whole thing ends next week, probably for good. And I honestly don't mind. There's A LOT more story to tell. More than could be told in the two hours that remain. They make a lot of references to the distinction between "secrets" and "mysteries." I think there are a lot of things they've kept secret over the course of the series, and a lot of mysteries that they haven't even tried to explain to themselves. Next week they'll clear out all the secrets, and leave us with the mysteries, and it'll be great.

This is why I'm kinda on the fence about a season 4. If Lynch and Frost think they have enough story ideas to pull it off, cool. But I've loved The Return so much that there's a large part of me that just wants them to go out on top (unless they don't stick the landing with the final two hours).

The tension they built up there was extraordinary. For weeks we've been wondering what side she was on. Then her reaction to the text, the music on her elevator ride up (a leitmotif we've heard before), the background in the elevator that looked suspiciously like the red room (as a lot of rooms in that hotel seem to...), the constant foreboding for weeks that something was gonna happen to Gordon, or Albert, or both of them, the gun in her purse, right next to her cigarettes, the way she was shaking as she spoke, like there was something she was being forced to do that she didn't want to do, Albert giving her a drink and being certain to catch a glimpse in her bag, the moment she reached in and pulled out the cigarettes...

Everybody was on their top game in that scene. It would be an absolute standout scene of any series, but in this one it has competition.

Near the end of her story to Gordon, Albert, and Tammy, Diane said what I originally HEARD as 'by the sheriff's station', so I thought that's where the coordinates that she texted dirty Dale pointed to.

But I just rewatched with CC on, and she said 'I'm in the sheriff's station'! There are a lot of people currently in the sheriff's station, but the only one with any known connection to Dale is the mysterious woman with no eyes, who's so far been referred to as Naido. Switch the o at the end for an e at the front and spell it backwards and you get Diane.

One tricky thing about this is that there have also been implications that Naido was "Judy." So is Judy actually Diane or is one of these hypotheses wrong?

she also repeatedly said "I'm not me!" just before she was shot. Most people read that as a statement that she was a tulpa/doppelganger. But it probably also meant that the "I" in the sheriff's station was not her true physical form.

I should have known the finale would raise more questions than it answers. I'm surprised at just how far away from the normal narrative it veered. I loved it though. A fitting end to one of the most remarkable things I've ever seen.

I desperately hope they figure out a way to do a fourth season, though. Or another movie. It seems pretty clear that they were trying to set up for more story.

There is another book. "The Final Dossier," a continuation of the Secret History book. Coming any day now, I think.

I'm gonna watch this a few more times before I'll feel like I really followed it. I nearly jumped out of my chair, though, when I remembered who Mrs. Tremond/Chalfont is. I can think of a dozen ways to interpret that bit at the end.

I think they've set themselves up for some great stories if they continued, but I also think they'd be perfectly happy leaving it here. And I would be too. I've heard mixed reports in the press about whether Lynch and Frost wanted to do more.

If it ends here, I'll be disappointed not because I want the stories tied up. I love the fact that they've made the answers so difficult, and so far from standard narrative reach. I'll just be disappointed not to have such an incredibly well constructed thing to watch every week. I've never seen anything as beautiful as this on television.

McLachlan previously said, on more then one occasion, they (Lynch, Frost, cast, etc) had been talking about doing season four, and he said he was definitely in. Sherilyn Fenn said David enjoyed doing this season and that he would do another if the fans liked this season. I've read Showtime is pleased with how the show has gained a new demographic for them, and they also expect the show to do well when awards season comes around. Apparently, the live numbers for the show aren't the best, but it has been doing very well with streaming.

I'm not buying the most recent reports since the finale that there are no talks for another season - they already said there were before.

I think after awards season they look at script, budget, etc and start trying to line up another season. I don't see it coming out anytime soon though, I think it took them like 2-3 years to do this one, no?

Regardless, the mystery of "will they do another season" is just extra publicity anyway, so why bother to make it concrete so early.

nothing imo. They made the statement with this finale that Laura Palmer is forever doomed, no matter if it's past or future. Evil/negative force is always prevalent and cannot be vanquished.

... prestige television. But it was just the John the Baptist to Twin Peaks. David Lynch came to redeem us from resolution and clarity as congratulatory pats-on-the-back from show runners who share our outlooks on the world. Ambiguity is freedom now. Hooray.

The finale works with and without episode 18, so that's why I say both. 18 is kind of an epilogue.

I'm ready to rewatch it all over again already.

Lots of good theories out there about episode 18. I mostly agree with the "Laura dream" theory.

that Richard is the dreamer. Not Richard Horne. The Richard that Dale "became" in episode 18. (After whom Richard Horne might have been subconsciously named in the dream.)

The entire series was Richard's dream and travelling 430 miles and passing through a portal meant that he and Diane would (gradually) wake up as Richard and Linda. Was Linda sharing the dream? I don't think so. How does Audrey fit into this? I don't know.

But after everything changed, Dale/Richard was acting as an amalgam of the good Dale and the evil Dale. He still wanted to defend the powerless (the waitress), but he did so by immediately overpowering his adversaries (the cowboys), shooting one in the foot, and threatening everyone with an explosion. He wanted to find Laura and set everything right, and he started on that path by threatening someone at gunpoint for coordinates.

Good Dale defeating evil Dale was Richard's dream of his good qualities defeating his poor qualities.

Perhaps Richard regularly ate at Judy's diner. Perhaps he had thoughts and dreams about Carrie, the waitress he expected to see that day, that he was not happy with himself about. He associated Judy (the place) with those temptations that scared him. He was still having trouble separating the dream from the reality (it's happened to me for a few minutes after I wake from a really intense dream), and he thought Carrie might really be Laura, and that he could really take her home.

Another point, definitely intentional and possibly related to this interpretation though I think it would tie into any interpretation: Diane/Linda has hair the color of the walls of the Red Room, and fingernails alternating white and black like its floor.

Anyway, the "Richard's dream" interpretation, as I've understood it, doesn't explain how the home was owned by Mrs. Chalfont/Tremond, very ominous names that we'd seen in the "dream" space. It also doesn't explain why Carrie/Laura finally screamed at the end. Dale/Richard asking what year it was could just be more of his disorientation, but Laura/Carrie (who, if you listen closely, heard a ghostly sound of her mother going to wake her up on the morning she first went missing) screaming ... means what? Dale/Richard's imagination? Is that also why Carrie/Laura acted like it wasn't totally out of the ordinary to have a dead man sitting on her couch? If Frost and Lynch were trying to set us up for this interpretation of episode 18, perhaps the ending was meant to subvert even that bit of narrative closure.

For the record, I don't believe there IS a correct interpretation of the ending. Frost and Lynch intentionally set this up to be mysterious, impenetrable, something that could be interpreted in many ways. But I think the interpretation of the dream as being a dream of personal struggle with the meaning of heroism, is one interpretation that they were trying to point us toward.

I'm sure after three more viewings I'll be on to some other interpretation...

But I respect it and I really liked it, I think its dope that they chose to leave us all on that note where the discussions online have ran amok and people are 50% mad as hell and 50% happy with it

All in all this season was some of the best shit I've ever seen TV, if not the best

An accomplishment this major is pretty rare this late in a director's career. I'm not sure why I thought we'd get a happier ending when you consider how every season before it ended. I'd be totally fine with this being the end but I do think there's a good chance we'll see more episodes in a few years.

I'm not even trying to "figure out" episode 18 anymore. I'm just letting it take me in all the different and inconsistent directions that it was designed to take me.

When I first watched eps 17 and 18, I was convinced that they were set on doing another season, just because they were blatantly leaving open such big loose ends (Audrey, Beverley & Ben, Carl, The Experiment, Judy, Sarah Palmer, Whatsisname the 'sparkle' addict who maybe shot himself in the woods, 'Red' the drug trafficker who does magic tricks and might be the grandson of Mrs Tremond from the original show...), and even opening more of them (Richard & Linda, Mrs. Chalfont/Tremond, I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting).

But by now I think that wasn't about setting up another season, it was about leaving us with persistent mysteries, ideas that we could chew on and reinterpret for the rest of our lives. It's also a statement on the dream logic that Lynch likes so much, and that in retrospect we should have seen suffusing the entire show. Dreams don't get tied up before they end.

I think they could give us another season if they really wanted to; that's another benefit of this style of storytelling. But I honestly don't think that was the plan.

There's a meme going around, I'm not sure how true it is, that in a dialect of the Chinese language, "jiao de" translates to "explanation," implying that easy answers are the great evil that would destroy this world. And that world, the show itself, seems very much a part of what they're talking about with "we live inside a dream."

The woman at the door of the "Palmer" house at the end, who called herself Alice Tremond, was actually played by the real-world owner of that house. Also, near the end of their drive, Cooper/Richard and Laura/Carrie stopped at a Valero gas station -- that was the first time a real-world logo appeared over the entire course of the show (other than maybe Diane's cigarette's; I need to recheck that). This seems to imply that when Dale stepped out of the "normal" world of the show, he was stepping into the "real" world, or something closer to the real world. The show was the dream, and the dream had come to an end.

I say this right after I said I'm not trying to figure out episode 18 anymore. Maybe I am...

But this was a fucking good show. It immeasurably exceeded my expectations, and it deserves an enormous pile of Emmys (and will probably get none).

In response to Reply # 0

Im optimistic that this will happen in 3-5 years. Could see it being 10 episodes though.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

http://welcometotwinpeaks.com/news/twin-peaks-season-4-years/

In support of his “Small Stories” photo exhibition currently on display at the Belgrade Culture Centre (Kulturni Centar Beograda) in Serbia, David Lynch participated in a public Skype session projected onto the cinema screen of KCB’s jam-packed theater. It marked the first public event where he would talk Twin Peaks since the perplexing finale on September 3rd.

While taking several questions from the audience face-to-face, the director declined to reveal the fate of Audrey Horne, whose very last shot in Part 15 was both abrupt and confusing. “What matters is what you believe happened,” he clarified. “Many things in life just happen and we have to come to our own conclusions. You can, for example, read a book that raises a series of questions, and you want to talk to the author, but he died a hundred years ago. That’s why everything is up to you.” In other words, and as noticeably demonstrated by the Twin Peaks discussion forum, we are all detectives.

Whether there will be a 4th season of Twin Peaks is too early to say, he told the crowd, adding that if the series would continue, fans would have to be extremely patient. Again. “It took me four and a half years to write and film this season.”

I’ll see you again in, say, 2.5 years?

Weird in different ways. Once Cooper/Dougie is back in the normal world, it starts to feel more like a conventional story.

But it's still told in an aggressively unconventional way, and if you're irritated by what I assume you're irritated by, then it's probably not for you.

But if you're up for something really different, really complex, and really mysterious, then it's worth every bit of effort and more.

Cos honestly all those unconventional quirks and lingering scenes are SORTA Lynch's thing, and for us who are big fans all of that shit really just adds to the magic of his storytelling imo

There's one infamous scene that's just a guy sweeping a floor for about ten minutes. About 10% of the FINALE is just people driving wordlessly down dark roads.

If you can go with the flow and not expect every shot to advance the plot, then it can really draw you in. But if you get antsy with that sort of thing, every episode will annoy you.

To make an analogy: early in his career people assumed Miles Davis couldn't play because he played so few notes. But the people who came to terms with it eventually realized that he was just creating music in a different way. He was giving the listeners enough room to understand melody in a different way.

People tend to assume that movies and shows should just be about laying out a plot, telling a story. But there are so many other things that they can do. Lynch is defiantly and aggressively focusing on those other things.

The other side of this is that the plot is never really tied up in any conventional sense. People were SHOCKED (myself included) at how many loose ends he left by the time of the finale. But the point is he did so many other things so well that WE, the viewers, found ourselves lucky to be able to explore the remaining plot possibilities in our OWN minds. I initially thought there was something wrong with the finale, like Lynch was "obviously" planning on explaining the story somewhere else. But then I spent literally two weeks basically hypnotized by the things he never explained, unable to get the open questions out of my mind, and shocked at the unexpected connections that I was able to make for myself.

I'm not saying that what he's doing is revolutionary in the sense that Miles Davis was revolutionary. This kind of pacing and ephemeral plotting is pretty standard in the world of art films. But this is the first time I've ever seen anyone attempt it at this level in a long-form television series.

the slowness adds suspense, and adds a hell of a lot of punch to the events that finally do come.

Just today I saw someone make an analogy with some scenes in the first episode where a guy stares silently at a mysterious empty box for what appears to be his full-time job. Eventually something does happen with that box (I won't spoil it more than I already have), but it's more chilling and more intriguing because we've been wondering for all that time what it even was. And even when something did happen, we don't really know much about what it was, so we're left to think about it.

This staring at the mysterious box seems very much like it was intended as a metaphor for watching this kind of story.

That was amazing. I may have been slightly disappointed with the final episode for leaving a lot of questions but what a great season. This is how you bring back a beloved tv show, never seen it done better. A million times better than X-Files revival and I actually liked that too for the most part.

The fan service was so well done, the excitement when Cooper finally becomes Cooper again, nearly everything was so fun to watch. The stuff that tied in with the old seasons and the movie especially were done so ill. It makes me want to watch everything again to catch more details.

I read the log lady actress died in real life 4 days after filming her scenes. The show lost 4 actors that are in this just in 2017, Harry Dean Stanton, Albert, and Dr Hayward being the other 3 and of course Bowie who was gonna be in it but was ill so let them use footage. I think I'm with others that maybe aren't sure the show should go on but what a ride that was, so I am in if it is made.

It improves on multiple viewing.

The theory in this piece makes a fair amount of sense:

and yeah, last episode makes more sense.

My only complaint on the return I would have preferred Heather Graham return as Annie. Maybe she was asked and declined, didn't hear. It seems they gave Diane her character arc when I think it would have worked better to separate them. Cooper's love interest staying Annie, having her being the one raped by evil Cooper, etc would have been more impactful and kept better continuity imo. But its a minor nitpick on an otherwise excellent return.

I will be satisfied if they end it here, especially with so many of the actors passing recently. That said, I will be back if they make more.

I would have actually been a bit unsatisfied if the Diane story went over to Annie. I'm sure they would have changed elements of it, but if it progressed exactly the same way I wouldn't have found it as convincing. In the original show, Dale only knew Annie for a matter of weeks. The story we got with Dale and Diane was able to build on the idea of their decade-long working relationship and bond.

That said, it was a little weird that they seemed to add a romantic element between Dale and Diane that was never there before. So you're probably right that they might have mapped it out with Annie, maybe Wyndom Earle's wife, maybe Audrey...

Both Annie and Wyndom Earle's wife (forgot her name) also would have brought in references to the shittier parts of the second season, which they might have just wanted to wipe from the face of the Earth.

They also, pretty blatantly, didn't bring back Donna Hayward (either Lara Flynn Boyle or whoever it was who played her in the movie). I think I heard there was some ugliness between Boyle and Maclachlan, who dated during the filming of the original series.

They also didn't bring back Josie Packard, which honestly kinda surprised me -- they could have worked in some kind of reference to her being stuck in the lodge, and at a few points I thought that's what they were doing. I believe the actress who played her even wrote an open letter to Lynch (as her character) asking for this.

The actor who played him, in the intervening years, turned onto kind of an asshole, Twitter troll, hardcore Trump supporter with all that implies, etc. He and Lynch don't get along anymore, and I'm sure there was some fear of him saying things that would make everyone embarrassed by his presence on the show.

EDIT: Here's an article.

Conveniently, the last thing The Man From Another Place says in the original show was "When you see me again, it won't be me."

Well his boy Trump has done a good job of bringing out that underlying dread that Lynch depicts so well in his work...

version of Secret History of Twin Peaks

I wish I did it the other way, the first book actually has a lot of cool visual shit unlike the new one.

(Not even close to all, but that's a good thing.)

I won't even say who comes up and how for fear of spoilers. But you'll be surprised by some things, unsurprised by other things, and overall it almost feels like new Twin Peaks.

It's pretty short. Like 140 pages.

There was also "The Secret History of Twin Peaks", which came out just before the third season. That's longer and goes in a lot more directions. One cool thing about that is that it pretends to be a collection of writings by and interviews with characters from the show, and in many cases they got the same actors to read these sections in the audiobook. So it almost seems like a Twin Peaks radio play. The Final Dossier is basically all written in the voice of Tammy Preston, and she was voiced by someone else in Secret History, so I presume the Audiobook of The Final Dossier wouldn't feel quite as much like a continuation of the show.

and not sure will ever figure everything out.

I was reading how a lot of Lynch's other movies have links in this as well. I recently watched Blue Velvet again and the stage setup for Dorothy is nearly identical to Audrey's Dance scene. The piece of flesh in the trunk somewhat similar to the ear. Lots of visuals seem Eraserhead-esque.

Also after rewatching Blue Velvet, fuck Tarrantino, stole everything from Lynch. lol Naw, but would we have Reservoir Dogs or Pulp Fiction without BV paving the way? I'm not so sure..
