I always knew we'd get more Star Wars in one form or another. I never thought we'd see more Twin Peaks.

I think they had to be, at minimum, aware of that 25 years connection.

It may explain why its coming out in 2016 rather than next year. Let's be honest, it's not like the cast is busy doing something else, and Lynch and Frost probably aren't too occupied either.

The return of Twin Peaks has cast its star—and it’s exactly who you want.

Kyle MacLachlan will reprise his iconic role as FBI Agent Dale Cooper in Showtime’s reboot of ABC’s 1990 cult favorite drama about the murder of a homecoming queen in a small Northwest town.

The actor surprised critics by taking the stage at the Television Critics Association’s semi-annual press tour Monday, where MacLachlan handed a “damn good cup of coffee” to Showtime president David Nevins.

“I’m very excited to return to the strange and wonderful world of Twin Peaks,” said MacLachlan, dressed in a Cooper-style dark suit. “May the forest be with you.”

Series co-creator David Lynch will helm all of the nine episodes, which Showtime expects to air in 2016. Nevins wouldn’t say much about the new story other than Lynch and co-creator Mark Frost have been “very specific in promising closure, and that’s exciting.”
“From what I’ve seen, I think this going to live up to expectations—and then some,” Nevins said.

The executive said he “was kind of begging” Lynch and Frost when trying to convince them to do a reboot at Showtime. “And it felt like only way you could do it is to have David committing to
directing all of them and that’s what I was begging for,” he said.

“ something they’ve been toying with. And for David, 25 years was the magic number. There’s a reference in original, ‘I’ll see you in 25 years.'”

Nevins said Lynch seemed particular impressed by some of the Showtime executive’s “violent, weird” artwork in his office. “I think he liked that.”

Dude has directed two whole movies in the '00s, and he's going to direct nine episodes of TV in one year? Never going to happen. He only directed six episodes total the first time around. I also think it's a miracle if he really has nine scripts written.

How's this for a way to start the weekend: Showtime's Twin Peaks revival is all systems go.

Following a squabble with Showtime, David Lynch announced Friday via Twitter that he has resolved his salary and budgetary standoff with the premium cable network.

"Dear Twitter Friends, the rumors are not what they seem ..... It is !!! Happening again. #TwinPeaks returns on @SHO_Network," he wrote.

Not only is the stalemate over, but Showtime has committed to producing more than the nine episodes originally ordered.

"This damn fine cup of coffee from Mark and David tastes more delicious than ever," Showtime president David Nevins said in a statement Friday confirming the news. "Totally worth the extra brewing time and the cup is even bigger than we expected. David will direct the whole thing which will total more than the originally announced nine hours. Preproduction starts now!!”

The news comes a month and a half after Lynch announced that he was exiting Showtime's nine-episode revival over a salary dispute. He originally signed on to direct the project but noted that there was "not enough money offered to do the script the way I felt needed to be done."

Showtime already had a deal in place with Lynch and co-creator Mark Frost to bring back the cult hit with star Kyle MacLachlan for a run in 2016, with sources telling THR that the scripts had already been written. For its part, Showtime at the time noted that it "continues to hold out hope" that Twin Peaks can be brought back with both its creators at the helm.

Following Lynch's outburst, the cast teamed for a video backing the beloved director that went viral as part of a #SaveTwinPeaks campaign that said doing the show without Lynch is "like pies without cherries" in a nod to the cult series.

9 episodes with episode 1 and 9 having extended running times. February 2016 might be the premiere date.

Ive never seen a show kept under wraps like this. They're not even screening it for critics until the 19th.

I halfway thought this was going to be sort of a pop culture event, but seems like they are content with just letting it be a cult thing.

Lynch (and Frost) must have total, complete control over this thing, which is simultaneously exciting and worrying. FWWM wasn't good, and his last movie, released 11 years ago, Inland Empire, was three hours of... to be honest, I don't even remember at this point. I just recall it being too confusing, dense, and very stream-of-consciousness - even by Lynch standards.

Wonder what Showtime is thinking at this point.

Compare how little we know about Twin Peaks compared to the new Alien and every other summer movie. I hope this starts a less is more trend when it's comes to promotion honestly.

I understand your trepidations though but I'm remaining optimistic. Frost is a really traditional and story driven writer and I think he's there mainly to make sure it doesn't turn into Inland Empire.

How much you enjoy Fire Walk with Me still seems like the best gauge if you'll like it or not. The weird digressions, hokey humor and surreal horror are all here along with a plot that moves at a surprisingly good pace. Some really freaky shit in here.

I never watched the prequel movie, so I can't comment on that. It's been awhile since I binged watched Twin Peaks, but from what I recall there was a general consistency until the finale when it just drifted off to this dark and weird place. I'm not sure yet if that's a good or bad thing. With that said, I thoroughly enjoyed that first ep and am all in on the new season.

Will help flesh some of the Agent Jeffries stuff out at the very least.

This is some excellent uncut Lynch. I can imagine a fair number of folks would bail after episode 3 (if not 2), so I can definitely understand them putting up the first 4 right away, as 4 is the most "Twin Peaks" of the set.

And shoutout to the VFX intern that just finished the compositing tutorial in After Effects and got hired for this gig.

Watched the 2 first yesterday, and the 3rd and 4th episodes today

There's so much to process though, but IMO this is killing thus far. I've been super entertained by these 4 eps. Wally Brando though. ROFL

Feels like a perfect hybrid of season 1 and Fire Walk with Me.

Wish we got 4 eps at a time, its gonna be hard waiting another 8 days for the 5th ep only to have a weeks lapse until the 6th one drops.

SO GOOD!

Keeping up with other TV shows, no matter how amazing they are (The Leftovers), just doesn't compare to the 4 episodes of Twin Peaks that I watched over the past couple of days. There's nothing like this on TV now, nor has there ever been as far as I know, and I can't wait to see how the season plays out.

Episode 3 was a masterpiece. So perfectly done and is up there with GOAT TV episodes like International Assassin & Ozymandias. I watched the whole thing in awe.

Great start to the season and if it's already this elite I am HYPED for 14 more episodes. Kyle McLachlan is acting his ass off by the way. Amazing physical work.

If you're thinking about watching this, but haven't seen the original and are intimidated by the 30 hour commitment to catch up, I'd say start with Fire Walk With Me first, rewatch or read about the ending of Season 2, then trust in David Lynch and get ready for some weird, scary, whimsical, one of a kind TV. Damn good TV.

Hope more of PTP starts watching this, as there's a ton to discuss.

It's moving slowly, but I knew it would. 18 one-hour episodes is alot. I think it's very similar to season 2 so far. Hundreds of characters, all kinds of randomness, plot points that may or may not go anywhere. I'm glad that the humor really ramped up after the first couple episodes, feels more like Twin Peaks now. Brain-dead Cooper is funny, but I want the old Cooper to come back soon.

Episode 5 has been my favorite so far. The doctor's radio show was classic shit. Unfortunately I was pretty bored with episode 6 other than a couple obvious, bizarre moments.

It really is impressive to see how many great actors signed on for this. I'm hoping Laura Dern and Harry Dean Stanton get alot of screen time, but I'm not so sure.

I stopped watching Fargo by about the third episode because I kept deciding I'd rather rewatch the latest episode of Twin Peaks. (And I love Fargo; I'll probably shoot through the rest of the season in this Twin Peaks hiatus week.)

I've even started listening to one of those stupid babble-about-the-latest episode podcasts, and it's making me want to rewatch the original series and Fire Walk With Me.

part 8 left A LOT to process

Let's face it, Lynch is gonna Lynch, and I would rather wait until the season's end before I start to evaluate it. He and Frost clearly aren't concerned with the expectations of fans, media, or Showtime. This is completely and utterly their vision and execution.

That said, and obviously I look forward to this every week, but I'm sort of falling in the middle with it so far. It seems most people are absolutely loving it or hating it.

Anybody hear an explanation as to why?

Did anyone even mention Chester Desmond?

I don't remember all of what happened in FWWM, but didn't he touch the jade ring and immediately disappear?

I also remember that someone (him?) wrote "Let's Rock" on the windshield of a car, which Diane also famously said this season. Are we to take these points to mean that Chester Desmond was a tulpa? But if so, where is the real one?

It seems childish and goofy to say it as flatly as that. But I'm working hard to think of something more suspenseful, more funny, more endearing, better acted (particularly MacLachlan, Lynch, and Robert Forster), more surprising, more ambitious...

I understand why it's not getting as much attention as it deserves. Not enough people have Showtime. The incredibly slow pacing (which I love) would drive a lot of people batty. And if you haven't seen the original show you wouldn't get nearly as much out of the new one (and while the original is rightly beloved, it definitely shows its age, and it often pushed the goofy melodrama too far for my taste).

But even if you're ambivalent about the original (as I was, though at times it showed the same greatness), it's worth the investment to prepare for this.

I don't know if I want them to try for a fourth season or just work out a perfect closing to it here. My guess is they're shooting for the latter, and I expect them to deliver it, though I have absolutely no idea what that might be.

Bout to spark up and watch the Season 2 finale. The first season is one of the best things I've ever seen, the aesthetic is just untouchable. Shit fell off a cliff after S02E09 tho, it went from brilliantly playing with soap opera tropes to becoming a straight up soap opera.

I'm still surprised something like this was on primetime on ABC. The "Bob" stuff is creepy as fuck NOW, can't imagine how audiences reacted in 1990.

There's one scene (involving a song about sycamore trees) that gave me chills. Totally makes up for all the fluff in the second half of season 2.

Also, there are so many little ways they found to match up the new series with this episode. The 25 year wait, and the loss of a few of the original actors, obviously wasn't in their plan. But I think they found a way to turn every challenge into an opportunity.

gore/blood, too many characters/storylines/loose ends, not enough soap opera stuff....

i mean...i understand some of these complaints...this is definitely not the same twin peaks that aired back in the 90s and i don't like the direction they took for certain characters (Mr.C above all)... but each week i find myself glued to the screen and i'm sure the finale will be glorious and worth the wait.

I'm still basically bewildered about the details of what's happening, but we pretty clearly started the closing act tonight.

There was speculation that the girl who ate the frogbug at the end of episode 8 might have been a young Sarah Palmer. I guess we have confirmation of that now (or, at least, we're supposed to think we do).

And the frogbug appears to be the same (in species, at least?) as "the experiment", the creature who spat out Bob in episode 8, and who killed those poor sexy New Yorkers in episode 1.

Audrey DOES appear to exist in "the real world", I guess. I was getting really suspicious after episode 13.

What the hell does Andy know now that they haven't told us yet? Remember: Andy was the one who first realized how to find the entrance to the Red Room in the original series.

The eyeless woman from episode 1! What the fuck? I can't WAIT to find out what's going on with her. I've heard some speculation that that's Josie Packard. It's a different actress, obviously, but if they want to claim she didn't age (like Major Briggs), then they'd have to use a different actress. For those who don't remember: in the original show Josie disappeared rather mysteriously and was apparently trapped in a doorknob at the Great Northern.

The Great Northern, where there's now that weird hum. A hum that now appears to be coming from the electrical transformer. (It's been established for a while now that Black Lodge people travel around using the electrical grid.)

WTF at the random Londoner with super strength? Are he and Nadine gonna team up and beat evil Cooper at arm wrestling now?

They are not dancing around the fact that David Bowie played Philip Jeffries, and they are making Philip Jeffries absolutely central to the story. There is no confirmation that they got Bowie in even for a cameo before he died. But there have been other surprises in the cast, and if I remember right they did do most of the filming well before he died. And they made a point of getting a few other people in for at least very brief cameos. Wouldn't that be fucking something if David Bowie showed up in episode 18.

What else just happened? Holy Fuck? I'm gonna go watch this again, right now.
