"Deadpool (Miller, 2016)"
Wed Aug-12-15 09:53 AM by Frank Longo

about time. the test footage was promising.

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/x-men-spinoff-deadpool-gets-734172

Twentieth Century Fox and Marvel Comics are moving ahead with their long-gestating X-Men spinoff Deadpool.

On Thursday, the studio announced that the movie will hit theaters Feb. 12, 2016. Tim Miller is set to direct the film, with Ryan Reynolds long rumored to star, although no deal is set. (Bets are that he will.)

The beloved Marvel character Deadpool, aka Wade Wilson, is a talkative mercenary with a host of powers, including the ability to heal rapidly. Reynolds played Wilson in 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine, while Scott Adkins played the character of Deadpool after Wilson had transformed.

News of Deadpool's release comes weeks after test footage of the project leaked briefly online. The sequence, featuring Reynolds, was shot several years ago, but nevertheless sparked intense conversation on social media.

In a recent interview, Reynolds commented on the leak, suggesting it helped move the process along. "The movie has been in a state of limbo for a while. There was such an overpowering reaction to the footage, you sort of feel like, 'Oh, so we weren't crazy for our reasons for loving this character, for loving this role.' It's interesting to see the power of the Internet. It's awe-inspiring, actually," the actor told the Niagara Falls Review. "And it's neat that Twitter and Facebook and Instagram can move mountains when used in the right way."

Reynolds, whose turn as the superhero Green Lantern failed at the box office, has been linked to a potential Deadpool solo movie for years, even before he debuted as the character in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. His interest in the property dates back to 2003.

In announcing the Deadpool news, Fox also made other key changes to its release slate, including taking New Regency's Assassin's Creed off the 2015 summer calendar.

The adaptation of the Ubisoft video game, starring Michael Fassbender, was set to open Aug. 7 but won't be ready in time, according to insiders. The script has gone through several rewrites, while the production itself has grappled with scheduling issues. Fox insiders say Assassin's Creed will now hit theaters in 2016.

As a result, Josh Trank's Fantastic Four reboot will move from June 19, 2015, to the Aug. 7 spot, while YA film adaptation Paper Towns — based on the book by John Green — will move up from July 31, 2015, to June 19, the same corridor Fox used to release YA blockbuster The Fault in Our Stars, also based on a Green novel.

Fox is taking a cue from Disney and Marvel in relocating Fantastic Four to August, where Guardians of the Galaxy prospered this summer. For years, August was considered a dumping ground. If anything, Guardians proved that August has the benefit of being less crowded when it comes to tentpoles.

It's still Fox, it's still Ryan Reynolds, and it's still a character that could be unwatchably obnoxious if they don't delicately toe that line.

Considering the characters whole schtick is breaking the fourth wall and cracking 'in' jokes, NOT throwing darts at the actors other roles would have been off.

And it's still a distinct beat of a trailer dedicated exclusively to reminding the audience how shitty Reynolds was as a superhero last time out. Which is... something, that the knowledge of Reynolds as a shitty superhero is *so* prevalent that it makes the fucking trailer, lol.

This movie will have bigger problems than meta humor, though. Namely, finding an audience that will justify the budget. And/or quality of film. Still holding out hope for quality... but it's still Fox and it's still Reynolds.

How exactly would that make people forget? The reference is quite clearly a wink and a nod that he was a part of that mess.

But the "dont sew the mouth shut" line just tells me they are trying too hard. Its unnecessary to me. You made two shitty movies, took the checks and now want to clown after the fact. If you want me to forget just make a good movie and move on. Seems extra corny to me and a way to try and gain fanboy favor. Is there going to be a Blade 3 *wink* as well?

It's right in line with Deadpool!!

You made two shitty
>movies, took the checks and now want to clown after the fact.

He's clowning himself!

>If you want me to forget just make a good movie and move on.

Who is asking you to forget anything?

>Seems extra corny to me and a way to try and gain fanboy

It's Deadpool. He's hyper self aware.

Yes, they're trying to gain fanboy favor by making the character true to the character. Hopping the fourth wall, making pop culture references, and being a sarcastic smart as is sort of his thing. I fully expect- and demand- an extremely meta outing here. I'm kind of laughing at anyone who doesn't.

>Is there going to be a Blade 3 *wink* as well?

Probably. Are you going to be mad about that too?

... I don't think anyone who is skeptical about this movie doesn't *expect* that sort of thing. They are just concerned that that sort of humor won't work cinematically, that it'll be annoying/corny/etc. There's a fine fine line that will need to be toed here.

As a fan of the character, I'm equally hopeful and worried about the medium adaptation from the page to the screen. And also cuz, you know, it's Fox.

I mean, they could have easily cherry picked the best reactions. Personally I've got high hopes for this and fucking LOVE the trailers thus far.

Unfortunately there's no way this can be anything more than a B- since they went and cast TJ miller, who is the opposite of butter.

My critic friends were lukewarm, but fuck them. This is the best X-Men movie Fox has put out.

RR is the fucking man. Give this shit 20 sequels.

Jane Got a Gun needs to take note on flashback structure from this.

I hope Warhead has a bigger role in the sequels.

This is getting an all around 2D release which is a shame cause the opening "credits" sequence would've killed in 3D.

As far as IMAX you can save the dough. It was dope, but not dope enough to pay IMAX.

All the overly nitpicky nonsense in here will soon be washed away in the glorious sea of greatness that is Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool.

By this time next week Reynolds will own this character in a way that rivals Downey and Jackman and Deadpool will become a major priority at Fox. Look for a sequel to be greenlit before the month is out and X Force to get some serious traction by years end with Deadpool probably attached.

Sans whatever scenes Terrible TJ Miller is in, this is going to be fantastic. With any luck miller will get incinerated again and he'll become the new James Marsden of running jokes, but I digress.

That said, remember to eat light this week and save room for crow.

He does.

I can't even blame the writing because it always seems like it's the same kind of dialogue so I assume that comes from him.

His lines in the Deadpool trailer are contrived, not funny, and sound like they were adlibbed, like a far worse version of the "you know how I know you're gay?" scene in 49 Year Old Virgin.

He's awful even in animated form on BH6.

I actually tried to watch Silicon Valley and he's the reason I stopped after like three episodes.

He's Rob Schneider bad to me.

Didn't invest in Deadpool because, frankly, I didn't believe in the market for it. I started considering changing my mind around the time Kingsman became a hit... but I also really didn't like Kingsman, so it was hard for me to wrap my head around.

I invested a bunch this week, even more today-- still should get some nice growth, despite getting in late for this particular one. I'm still pretty flabbergasted that a Ryan Reynolds snarky R-rated superhero movie is about to be a hit, but here we are. I'm just hoping it's a hit that I enjoy (should be seeing it tomorrow).

I'll take an L on thinking it would tank, since it pretty clearly should cross 100 mil domestic bare min.

I still haven't really had my fears alleviated by any of the ads I've seen (the first trailer or two, the test footage, and the print ads), but reviews have been mostly strong. As a big fan of the character on the page who has been terrified of how Deadpool would come across on screen, I remain cautiously optimistic.

It is obvious that Marvel would have never been able to translate this character to the screen. No way they would have gone with a rated R gore fest, but that is what this needed. Best Fox comic book movie since X-2. I was surprised how good Reynolds was as i usually hate him.

I don't want to be the Debbie Downer of the post. I thought it was okay. Bordered between mildly amusing and aggressively unfunny. Two decent action scenes. The teen girl was the best part by far.

Sort of surprised that, with all of the meta commentary, they didn't comment on more of the abundant cliches deployed here (the "superhero landing" joke is one of the best in the film for exactly that reason, imo). Too busy making lots of dick and ass jokes instead. Oh well.

Glad it's doing well. Good for R-rated superhero movies going forward. Hopefully I'll like the next one more.

One of your hallmarks is your love of films that completely own their camp, that do things to an extreme level in a way that just rolls with some wacky premise with just enough winking to let everyone know they're in on the joke.

Honestly this seems right up that alley. I'm not trying to convert you, but I am interested in what makes this so different from some of the things you normally ride for- i.e, hover-blading space werewolves with laser blasters.

I think they played the superhero tropes nicely without hammering us over the head with it. My argument for the relative lack of biting genre send-ups in the 4th wall elements is that this is the rough equivalent of a Mitch Hedberg set, were every line is a joke and every joke is a line. There's an awful lot of ground to cover with those and after two viewings today (second with my wife, don't judge! lol) there seemed to be a healthy balance with those scenes. A greater focus on zinging the genre as a whole would have actually been a detriment as it would have shifted the film significantly toward a parody as opposed to the more balanced, equal opportunity offender/casual commentary tone of the movie as is.

I also thought most of the sexual cracks were firmly within the bounds of the character as a whole. Some of his "WTF" responses like "What the ass?" or whatever definitely fell flat and on deaf ears, but in general they didn't feel all that overpowering to me.
My larger point is still that it's a faithful (well, in the parts that mattered) and well executed representation of the source material.

I acknowledge the passion in the film... but, and this is not a joke either, Dirty Grandpa is another movie in which you could tell everyone involved fucking *loved* what they were doing. De Niro hasn't looked that alive in over a decade, seriously.

With comedy, passion isn't enough-- the movie has to make me laugh. And the movie didn't really make me laugh-- or rather, it didn't make me laugh nearly enough. Just a subjective thing. People around me were laughing at things I didn't find funny, some of the few times I chuckled were at things no one else laughed about (the Ronnie Milsap reference, for instance).

As I said somewhere else in here, I'm happy for Reynolds-- he clearly fought for this for a long time, and it's paid off with huge box office receipts. I'm happy for R-rated superhero films-- PG-13 is bullshit, and the sooner the stigma of the R-rating is done away with (the ratings system in general, really), the better. And I'm happy that Deadpool, a character I really enjoy in the comics, will get a huge group of new fans.

I just hope the next movie makes me laugh more. My laughs were really limited here.

I just didn't find most of the jokes funny. The occasional dirty joke worked for me ("Dad?"), but most of the dirty stuff fell really flat IMO. Not even that it's out of character, just didn't make me laugh.

I wanted more meta humor. For a movie steeped in a lot of superhero movie cliches and tropes, I was hoping it'd be more self-referential regarding all of those things-- it's my favorite thing about Wade in the comics.

Obviously just me, though. I'm fine with that. Just didn't make me laugh enough for me to enjoy it personally.

I'm tempted to dive in, but since everyone enjoyed it, and I don't really take pleasure in being the guy who doesn't like something that everyone else enjoyed, I'll mostly refrain. Suffice it to say that since I didn't care about the origin story or the villain, and most of the jokes didn't make me laugh, there wasn't a lot for me here.

That said, I'd be down for a sequel, if only because they wouldn't be saddled with all of that origin stuff. I could see how a Deadpool-Cable buddy comedy could give us some good time travel meta comedy hijinks.

I love the opening credits. Whoever wrote this understands the character and it's a credit to Fox to allow them a long leash.

They got it right as far as the character goes and as I said earlier, Ryan Reynolds owns the role in a way that makes it really hard to imagine someone else doing this. He embodies Wade Wilson perfectly.

I have a hard time accepting any critique of the content of his character, because this was pretty damn faithful down to the dick. The pop culture references, breaking the fourth wall, everything was executed right in line with his comic iteration. It's not Adam Sandler level

The action was very good, but while I appreciate them taking a throwaway character in Negasonic Teenage Warhead and giving her some pretty substantial power I felt she was underutilized here. She was particularly under used in the final battle, but I can understand the logic of having her lay in the cut since she's more or less a kid in training.

I loved Colossus as the proverbial angel on Wade's shoulder, trying in apparent vain to steer him toward a more noble path. I also loved his noble approach to fighting Angel.

I also loved the jabs at the first iteration of the character in Origins as well as the GL jabs. Honestly I think anyone who has problems with those is completely missing the point and the spirit of the character because Deadpool would absolutely do that shit.

This does suffer from a bland as fuck villain. It would have been a tall order to write a character who didn't get buried under RR's top shelf ham but man was he bland and that's a shame because he's a goddamned sadist and the right actor and better writing would have seriously improved the movie as a whole.

They got a lot right. They hit a homerun with Deadpool character wise. They did a sound job weaving Colossus into this and actually accomplished quite a bit with his character story wise in a very understated way. They did a good job with his relationship with Copycat (you know she's coming!) but after that? Eh. It's actually pretty bland after that. It's not a huge negative because this is 100% the Ryan Reynolds show and he carries the day in a big way.

This could have been something truly special if they actually spent some time fleshing out Ajax by really showing what a sadistic fuck he is, fleshing out the tension between Wade and Francis with something more than Wade being his usual smart assed self and made Angel something more than a monotone enforcer. If RR wasn't so damn perfect in this role and they didn't capture so much of the spirit of the character overall, this would have been a significantly lesser experience and just another tired superhero flick.

That said, I was perfectly satisfied....but they better spend a little more time writing the other characters and fleshing out relationships and motivations in the sequel.

I'm in comic movie fatigue a bit, and kinda zone out on the cliches of the "genre", but i liked this...

funny, very funny in places
it's dark, especially in the torture sequences
the action for the most part was good, though at times too much slow mo + shaky cam

Yes RR was perfect as Deadpool
Morena Baccarin was good as the love interest and hella sexy IMO
TJ Miller is funny to me, kanye shrug
and Ed Skrein was a good villain. I hated dude

Colossus and NTW kinda seemed shoehorned in and I hated the design of Colossus, but certain scenes they def worked...

3-3.5 / 5

QUESTION: how does Deadpool fit into all the Marvel / Fox split universe things. i get so lost some times with it

agreed about Colossus..

I liked his role, but I didn't like his body shape (too bulky) and would have preferred him to be a little more chromed out.

Fox and others to considers some R rated comic book films.

Imagine an R-rated Wolverine... It'll never happen, but man, that would be something else...

I'm still holding out hope that Suicide Squad goes full R, b/c Ayer is very capable of delivering that... I know it won't be, but one can hope.

full disclosure: my support of this film and its success is purely on principle. I probably won't go see it, because... movies, violence, etc...

even though I pretty much love Deadpool the character; the idea of him alone is absolutely hilarious to me. and by most reviews, there's nothing lost in the translation. the main complaint is that it doesn't fit the traditional structure of a "tentpole" film. well, considering motherfuckers chopped off $7mil from the budget it's a wonder they even put it out.

the marketing was brilliant.

the lesson of this film is the same as all the MCU films post-Iron Man: stay true, and watch the money pile up

motherfuckers in Hollywood see this shit and will be like: "oh, so now we need MORE 'Hard-R' superhero films!"

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

It's not a bad movie at all, but people acting like this movie is "a breath of fresh air" when I've literally seen most this movie done before and better, irks me

...I'm happy for everyone involved, and I'm interested in seeing what happens in the sequel, but I agree that it isn't as funny as people are making it out to be.....but.... Still very good..... The funniest running non joke in the movie is the thought that ANY x-man, really would want Wade to join the team.... Btw, Gina Carano was awesome in this too.... Loved that the women were not just bystanders to the plot or damsels

FUCK YOU for making me go see this damn movie.

I saw the shit Reynolds "leaked" it sucked, I knew I would hate and I was fine with leaving it there. Then it comes out and its getting tons of love and making money....cool, I'll accept people are dumb and like R-rated stuff and I was wrong. But then here comes Longtarian for no reason saying it sucks, so now I have to confirm for myself, what I knew all a long that it sucked. It didnt, and I fucking HATE Ryan Reyonlds and TJ Miller. So fuck you. Thanks bye.

ok, in the end I LOVED this film

but, maybe it was from the weed, maybe it was from being tired

BUT

ten minutes in and I was about to leave due to the overabundance of violence, i had a visceral reaction and coulndt hang but i told myself "Chill the fuck out....it will be worth it..."

so i sat through it and it was well worth it

Could definitely see the budget constraints. Some of the dick jokes tried way to hard and didn't work, but Reynolds charisma pushed it through. TJ Miller is great and I don't understand why people hate him. Morena put in her first performance in years that I didn't despise. Colossus looked like shit, but Negasonic Teenage Warhead was FANTASTIC! Brit villain was great but Gina was stiff as fuck. Most importantly though..... (Hydra) Bob!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I dug it. Some groaners in there, but it could've been a lot worse.
