"Oh Supergirl may become a TV series..."

but DC Comics can't bring Diana of Themyscira/Diana Prince/Wonder Woman/Based Gawdess Amazon to TV or film? When you can clearly do it AND be a totally different entity than Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman in the upcoming Batman vs. Superman movie? SMH

But shout out to Greg Berlanti because you now have THREE shows on the air, and just sold one to NBC with this one in development and others coming? I'm not mad at all...

http://deadline.com/2014/09/supergirl-tv-series-dc-comics-829364/

On the heels of the success of Arrow and the strong buzz for its upcoming offshoot The Flash — both co-created and executive produced by Greg Berlanti — the top producer is looking to transition another popular DC superhero character to the small screen. I’ve learned that Berlanti has teamed with Ali Adler, who worked on his ABC series No Ordinary Family, for a TV series based on Supergirl. Warner Bros. TV, which is behind all DC TV series, will produce with Berlanti’s studio-based Berlanti Prods..

I hear the project, which is still in development, will be a new interpretation of the Supergirl character and her story. Adler will write the script and will executive produce with Berlanti Prods.’ Berlanti and Sarah Schechter. DC’s Geoff Johns, who has been involved in both Arrow and The Flash, is also expected to be part of the project but it is unclear at this time what his role will be. The Supergirl show doesn’t have a name yet. I hear the producers are considering several options that need to be cleared, including Super and Girl. The project is expected to be taken out in a couple of weeks and pitched to the major networks the way WBTV and DC did with their high profile Batman prequel Gotham, which landed at Fox with a big commitment. The Supergirl series had been in the works at WBTV for some time with Berlanti and Adler. Contrary to a report that was picked up by a number of outlets, Michael Green has had no involvement in the project.

The Supergirl character was created by writer Otto Binder and designed by artist Al Plastino in 1959. There had been several characters that had assumed the caped girl persona, most notably Superman’s cousin, Kara Zor-El, who shares his super powers and vulnerability to Kryptonite. There has been a push to get more female superhero characters in comic books and on the big and small screens. Marvel has a Jessica Jones series in pre-production at Netflix.

There will be four DC/WBTV series on the air this coming season, Gotham on Fox, the CW’s Arrow and The Flash on the CW and Constantine on NBC. In addition to Arrow and The Flash, Berlanti has new NBC crime dramedy The Mysteries Of Laura, and his company just sold conspiracy thriller Blindspot to NBC. Berlanti and Adler are repped by WME.

CBS Wants That New Supergirl TV Series Bad

Not wanting to be left out of the burgeoning superhero/comic TV show race, CBS has just issued a series commitment to Arrow and The Flash producer Greg Berlanti's new Supergirl show. This means that if CBS likes the pilot, the Supergirl series will get a certain amount of episodes ordered guaranteed.

As Deadline points out, this means every major network is running a superhero TV show or has one in the works:

• CBS: Supergirl

• Fox: Gotham

• ABC: Agents of SHIELD, Agent Carter

• NBC: Constantine

• The CW: Arrow, The Flash, iZombie

It's also worth noting that all but one of these channels have series based on DC comics, and the one hold-out is ABC, which just happens to be owned by Disney, which obviously owns Marvel. Craziness.

I'll be the first to admit I predicted that the Supergirl series would join Berlanti's other DC CW shows — I'm still sure the CW wanted it quite bad — but I failed to account for how much CBS would want to get into the comic TV game. Anyways, it's still very good news for comics fans.

And if for some reason they do put it on, it ain't gonna last. It simply costs too much to make a Supergirl series that would be worth watching, and the ratings won't justify it.

I feel like the Quicksilver SFX in the last X-Men movie beat them to the punch and will be the gold standard for portraying super speed in SFX for a while to come, though.

It took a second for Arrow to reel me, but now they're rolling tough.

I feel like Warner Brothers handles the DC Universe better on TV than in film. Kinda crazy.

Peace,

Spirit (Alan)

have that 'you must air the pilot ep' clause in contract, so we'll see Something. Also, ARROW is one of the most under rated shows on television, hope DC keeps winning on the small screen. That way when they do do Justice League some more folk will have converted. After watching Cap America 2 again this weekend, I dont see Marvel falling off cinematically until 2020....

That or Superman is giving her some space to grow into her own.

I'm sure he'll be referenced. This isn't going to tie into the larger universe they're trying to build into the films, so they can kind of do whatever they want with Supes.

Glee and Whiplash breakout Melissa Benoist has been tapped to play the iconic DC Comics character, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The hourlong drama, which received a hefty series commitment, centers on Kara Zor-El, Superman's cousin, who was born on the planet Krypton and escaped amid its destruction years ago. Benoist will play Kara, who after arriving on Earth was taken in by a foster family, the Danvers, who taught her to be careful with her extraordinary powers (which she shares with her famous cousin, Superman).

Now 24, Kara feels un-empowered, a slave to having repressed her innate abilities. She's still pretty, but with her face hidden behind glasses and her hair pulled back, she doesn't know it herself. An unexpected disaster forces her to use her powers in public. Energized by her heroic deed, for the first time in her life, Kara begins embracing her extraordinary abilities. She begins helping the people of her city and they soon take notice — and she's even given a new moniker: Supergirl.

Benoist becomes the actress to portray the character, who was most recently played on the small screen by Laura Vandervoort on The CW's Superman origin story Smallville.

The Glee actress was one of many actresses to test for the role, edging out The Vampire Diaries/The Originals' Claire Holt, among others, for the part, sources tell THR.

Benoist joined Fox's Glee during season four, as one of McKinley High's new students after the musical's senior class graduated. She was promoted to series regular ahead of season five and had been considered the heir apparent to star Lea Michele's Rachel on the series before the musical was retooled.

Supergirl will not be the first time Benoist has played a superhero. The actress donned a cape as "Woman Fierce" in Glee's "Dynamic Duets" episode in which the glee club channeled their inner super hero. (Watch her performance of "Holding Out for a Hero," below.)

She joins fellow Glee breakout Grant Gustin (The CW's The Flash) to land the starring role in a DC Comics adaptation from WBTV.

Arrow and Flash's Greg Berlanti and his No Ordinary Family cohort Ali Adler (The New Normal) will pen the script and executive produce the drama via Berlanti Productions' WBTV-based banner. Berlanti Productions' topper Sarah Schecter is also on board to executive produce.

See more Faces of Fall 2014

Supergirl — which still needs an official series order — could give all five of the broadcast networks superhero-themed series on the air next season, with DC properties on four of the five. Fox has Batman story Gotham — which like Supergirl started with a series commitment; NBC has Hellblazer take Constantine, which will end after 13 episodes; CW has already renewed Flash and Arrow; and ABC, via Disney's deal with Marvel, has Agents of SHIELD and bridge series Agent Carter. For its part, Netflix also has four Marvel series and a mini, starting with Daredevil.

I'm ready to be wrong, but until the series is ordered, NOPE. Still not buying it. And even if I'm wrong about it not making it to series, I'm definitely not buying that it lasts without some sort of Game of Thrones budget that its ratings won't remotely justify.

I like that actress tho.

CBS’s Supergirl adds Dean Cain and Helen Slater

With the news of its Supergirl TV series, CBS appeared to finally be moving away from crime procedurals. Then they remembered who they are and what they do, and the network’s entertainment chairman reassured viewers that the show wouldn’t stray far from the police beat. But Greg Berlanti is executive producing, and he’s got quite the superhero-show streak going over at the CW with Arrow and its spinoff, The Flash. So CSI: Argo City this probably isn’t.

To further bolster confidence, the show has just cast a couple of actors who know a thing or two about Kryptonian clans. TVLine reports that Dean Cain and Helen Slater are slated to guest star, along with Superman’s outline. Cain, of course, starred as Clark Kent/Superman Lois & Clark: The New Adventures Of Superman on ABC, and Slater portrayed Kara Zor-El herself in 1984’s Supergirl.

And just who will these elder statespeople of comic book adaptations be playing? No idea—their roles are being described as “top secret.” But might we remind you of how great the Bizarro storyline was on Smallville? No? Well, it was.

Supergirl officially gets CBS series order

by James Hibberd, Natalie Abrams

(Bonnie Osborne)

Posted May 6 2015 — 5:30 PM EDT

It’s a bird. No, it’s a plane. It’s Superman. No wait, it’s Supergirl! And she’s officially landing a series order at CBS.

The new series stars Glee alum Melissa Benoist as Kara Zor-El, who escaped Krypton amid its destruction years ago. Since arriving on Earth, she’s been hiding the powers she shares with her famous cousin. But now at age 24, she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be.

Supergirl hails from Arrow and Flash executive producer Greg Berlanti and The New Normal’s Ali Adler, who will write and executive-produce with Arrow and Flash boss Andrew Kreisberg and Sarah Schechter.

The drama is one of CBS’s relatively efforts to venture outside of its standard crime procedural comfort zone. The network is diving into the super-hero genre, which has made such a strong impact in both movies and—over the last few years—at its TV rivals, particularly CBS’s younger-skewing sister network The CW. One question is whether fans of NCIS and Criminal Minds will embrace the network getting into DC Comics territory. CBS won’t say if the show will air in the fall or midseason, but will almost certainly announce that decision at its upfront presentation in New York next week.

The series marks Berlanti’s third superhero project guaranteed to be on the air next season, though the Arrow-Flash spin-off will likely tip that number up to four. The one-hour drama is just one in a long line of comic book properties either coming to or currently on television. For its part, Warner Bros. has Arrow, The Flash and Gotham already renewed, while midseason entry iZombie is looking strong. Constantine, on the other hand, has burned out in the ratings (though is still officially under consideration for next season). The studio also has Titans and Lucifer in contention at other networks. Over at Marvel, ABC will likely renew Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., while the fates of Agent Carter and the Adrianne Palicki and Nick Blood-starring S.H.I.E.L.D. spin-off are still up in the air. Netflix also has Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and the subsequent team-up project The Defenders.

Though Supergirl will be airing on The CW’s parent network, Berlanti has already gone on record to say that the heroine exists in the same universe as the scarlet speedster and emerald archer, so we could be in for an epic cross-network crossover with The Flash and Arrow—and the superhero team-up spin-off, should it move forward.

The series also stars Mehcad Brooks, Calista Flockhart, Chyler Leigh and David Harewood, while Laura Benanti, Dean Cain and Helen Slater are among the pilot’s guest stars.

If it's in the same universe as the others, I guess it makes more sense. It's just the TOTAL opposite of CBS' usual business model/target audience. I'm surprised they're going to spend for it-- we'll see how they proceed.

But hey, as long as it's good, I'm with it. I'm all about DC nailing the TV world, as I don't have too much faith in their film universe at the moment.

Not even nine mins in and he shoehorned in a love triangle!!! Goddamn, dude!

It's not bad. A bit too close to the Black Widow trailer spoof at times, but it's got that early 90s super hero show feel to it that I find endearing.

50. "The One Thing That Makes SUPERGIRL Better Than MAN OF STEEL"
In response to Reply # 0

I don't agree with all of this, but it's well written and has some good points b.

http://birthmoviesdeath.com/2015/10/27/the-one-thing-that-makes-supergirl-better-than-man-of-steel

DC's latest TV show is the best Superman Family adaptation since 1978.

By Devin Faraci Oct. 27, 2015

I want to get this out of the way up front so that the comments don’t have to devolve into some kind of shitshow as they often do when Man of Steel comes up: I think Zack Snyder is a very good filmmaker - one of the best visual storytellers working today - and I think that on its own Man of Steel is a good movie. It’s just a really shitty Superman movie, a movie that seems to either misunderstand or despise what it is that makes Superman a unique and special character.

What makes Superman a unique and special character? Watch Supergirl, the new DC TV show on CBS, and you’ll totally get it. Supergirl captures so much of the spirit of what made Superman an enduring figure while also adding a very modern, very female, very Millennial twist to the whole thing. Not since the Superman: The Movie have I seen a Superman universe adaptation that gets so much so so right.

There’s one thing that Supergirl gets right that Man of Steel completely whiffed, and while it’s a small thing it is, in a very real sense, the only thing that matters. In Supergirl Kara Zor-El wants to be a hero.

That’s it. She wants to be a hero. That’s what divides Supergirl from Man of Steel (well, that and millions of dollars, an extra hour and a half run time and state of the art VFX), and it’s the one element that you need in any Superman story. Superman wants to be a hero. That’s just who he is. And that's just who his cousin is.

Man of Steel spends a lot of time with Clark Kent agonizing over his position in the world and about whether or not he wants to be a hero. That, to me, isn’t Clark Kent. Clark never questions this - he may question his own ability or second guess his choices or the world around him, but Clark Kent, as a character, is driven by the need to do the right thing. He works for justice not just as Superman but also as Clark Kent, reporter at the Daily Planet. There is no version of Clark Kent - no real version, anyway - who hides from responsibility, who uses his abilities for his own good. Let’s put it this way - Clark isn’t working as a gossip columnist, he’s working as a beat reporter who is out there trying to uncover the truth for the people of Metropolis.

On CBS’ Supergirl Kara Zor-El has the exact same motivation as her cousin. All that she wants to do - the only goal she has - is to make the world a better place. Her home planet is gone and she is dedicated to making sure that her adopted world is safe, secure and improving. That's why she's working at CatCo, because she thinks this media empire can give her the platform to change the world. She is counseled by her adoptive sister to hide her Kryptonian light under a bushel, but it doesn’t come naturally for Kara, and as soon as there’s an opportunity for her to go out and make a difference - as a plane threatens to crash into National City - she immediately runs off and helps. There are no second thoughts, no considerations of a secret identity, only the immediate, instant and innate need to help people.

Supergirl and Superman (and Superboy and Krypto and Streaky and Beppo the Supermonkey) all share this trait, and always have - until Man of Steel. What happens in Man of Steel is that Superman’s natural tendency to heroism is perverted and muffled by filmmakers who misunderstand the character on a profound, fundamental level.

Superman was created by a pair of Jewish kids in Cleveland during the Great Depression. He was completely a power fantasy for these kids - he’s a handsome, powerful man who has extraordinary powers. More than that, though, he’s an outsider, just as Jews were in America in the early 20th century. Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, the kids who invented the Man of Tomorrow, were the children of immigrants, and they built that into their power fantasy. Here was a character who came from elsewhere and who was unique and strange but was beloved, and a symbol of the greatness of America. The power fantasy at the heart of Superman wasn’t just about being strong, it was about being accepted.

Flash forward to the 21st century and find Zack Snyder and David Goyer reinventing Superman for another generation. These guys - hugely successful insiders, rich and powerful within their own world - approach power fantasies in another way. For Siegel and Shuster Superman’s power was a blessing, and it was obvious to them - being solid, hard working kids - that someone with that power would use it for the greater good. They didn’t have power, but they idealized it. Snyder and Goyer approach power as people who have it, and people who have power often fantasize about being able to let it go (ask any dominatrix in your life how many of her clients are incredibly powerful and rich men, looking for an opportunity to shed the responsibility of their lives). Spider-Man’s mission statement - with great power comes great responsibility - sounds like an ominous warning to guys like this.

Add to that a certain post-modern understanding of the character of Superman, an understanding that has come through the lens of comic book deconstructionists like Alan Moore (who, it should be noted, wrote a ‘last Superman story’ that is both modern, heartbreaking and, in the end, deeply lovely and inspirational). Snyder had done Watchmen, based on Moore’s comic book that sought to lay the superhero bare, to find the fascist hiding beneath the tights. Superman is the ubermensch, Nietzsche’s overman who represents the ideal culmination of humanity, and the ubermensch was a concept that appealed to Hitler and his Nazis as they pursued Aryan physical perfection. A man who is better than all others, who solves his problems by hitting them, who believes he has an innate right to pass judgment on his fellows - that’s fascism, and that’s clearly the dark side of the power fantasy that drove Siegel and Shuster.

Goyer and Snyder don’t see Superman as the Nazi ubermensch, but they do play with something even darker - the Randian figure driven by radical self-interest. I’ve always enjoyed the edginess of early Spider-Man stories where young, troubled Peter Parker was often tempted to just tell everybody to fuck off and to go use his powers for his own personal gain. Not even as a criminal, just as a guy monetizing his abilities. That’s the darkest possible path for Peter (and I often wonder what Steve Ditko, Spidey’s co-creator and an Objectivist, thinks about Pete’s continuous return to selflessness), and it’s one with which he often toyed, until the spectre of his dead Uncle Ben returned to remind him of his great responsibility. That’s classic Spider-Man business, the regular kid who find the path of heroism often too hard. But that’s not classic Superman, and in fact it’s a grotesque mischaracterization. I’m reminded of the Goyer-plotted The Dark Knight Rises, which sees another of DC’s most iconic and clearest heroes, Batman, doing one of the least Batman-y things possible - retiring for eight fucking years. It's as if Goyer specifically doesn't understand what motivates these characters.

Goyer and Snyder have taken the deconstructionist era of superhero comics and run with it, asking themselves why would a guy want to help the world and, for whatever reason, they were unable to come up with a good answer for it. They thought that audiences would find Clark’s struggle with heroism easier to identify with, as we identify so thoroughly with Peter Parker’s constant tsouris. But they didn’t understand that we don’t want to identify with Superman in that way. We want to aspire to be Superman.

That’s something Ali Adler, one of the creators of the show and the writer of the pilot episode, understands fully. Supergirl externalizes that aspiration - Kara literally is inspired by her cousin, as we are - but it also internalizes it. In Man of Steel General Zod calls Superman out, threatening the Earth. Clark has a long dark night of the soul, wondering if he should go to the Kryptonians. He talks to his mom, he consults a priest. In Supergirl an evil alien named Vartox calls Kara out, threatening National City. There’s no hesitation - she immediately flies off to confront the baddie.

Many people have pointed out that Man of Steel is about Superman’s first day on the job, but so is Supergirl, very explicitly so. As such Supergirl screws up, but her mistakes all come from enthusiasm, from her desire to do the right thing. Superman doesn’t have that enthusiasm, and he definitely doesn’t have the proactive nature Supergirl shows in the pilot. And frankly a Superman without that proactive nature isn’t Superman.

I don’t know much about Ali Adler, but I suspect that her approach to the power fantasy of a Kryptonian on Earth is quite similar to Siegel and Shuster. As a woman working in an industry that is cataclysmically male-dominated, she knows what it is to be the outsider. And like Siegel and Shuster she sees a position of power as an opportunity to lift others up - characters in Supergirl comment on what a female superhero means to their daughters. Unlike the post-deconstructivist Snyder and Goyer Adler never questions why Supergirl wants to help people - she understands the instinctive need and desire to leave the world a better place than you found it.

There’s other stuff - tonal things, an embrace of a larger and more colorful mythology - that sets Supergirl above Man of Steel, but for me the truly important difference is that Supergirl is about a superhero who wants to be a superhero, about a woman embracing her ability to effect change. Future episodes may see Kara Zor-El questioning this - you have to find drama somewhere, and a hero dissatisfied is good drama - but the show made a point to begin with a hero who wants to be a hero. It’s a very Golden Age, very pre-Marvel view of superheroes, the idea that the acquisition of super powers carries with it the immediate desire to do good. Supergirl doesn’t need to be motivated by vengeance or self-preservation or to be glum about helping people. She loves doing it, and she gets actual joy from being a hero.

When Siegel and Shuster invented Superman they brought him into a world that was in an apocalyptic financial crisis and that was headed towards an unprecedented charnel house of a world war. They didn’t create Superman in simpler times, or more naive times. They understood that dark times call for bright heroes, and so they created a light to shine through the encroaching storm clouds. Ali Adler and the team at Supergirl have done the same, creating a Supergirl who is, on the one hand, relatable in a day to day way but whose central heroism beckons to us in a difficult world, reminding us that sometimes you do the right thing because it’s the right thing to do.

I didn't get why her blowing up the axe when it was right in front of her face was a good plan but if these criminals are from krypton, couldn't she just have stabbed him with a couple of the darts that the government agency knocked her out with? Shouldn't sis have been like, "Hey, you be a diversion and I'll shoot him in the back and knock him out?"

It's almost like they made the kryponite angle worse because now they have it in convenient dart form.

All in all, it was a fine pilot and I really like the lead but they could ease up on the "Is it because I'm a woman?!" angle a bit. I mean, no problem with playing up feminism but this shit was nail on the head.

I didn't get the prison. Why were they underground all of those years? You're telling me that you have a prison filled with super powered people and they were like, "Fuck it. Let's lay low for a few years and wait for our moment! Which now, of course, is sending people at Supergirl one by one.

The show was fun but I have a feeling that I'll probably tap out after a handful of episodes.

The fight with the Light girl was the worst. Flash doesn't try to sneak up behind her. She opts not to use the way to knock out the flash (fists the ground) and goes back to the shoot each image of flash method that wasn't working.

Supergirls fights have been dumb though. Blowing up the axe that's right in front of her face. Human kicks alien in balls and overpowers it. And then the frontal assault (by both Supergirl AND Superman.

I thought they could get more out of her screwing up, not knowing how to use her powers in the final fights. But instead it's been kind of silly.

I'm already tired of the love triangle and the normal day stuff and stuff with the sister doesn't add much. Flash had the awkward In Love with HIs Adopted Sister angle but having Jesse L. Martin and Tom Cavanagh helped.

That could have just been the beginning of another episode.

I'm at episode 14 (16 have aired) and the show is pretty hit or miss.

I like Supergirl. I like the DOE.

But some of these stories have been executed awfully.

The one where the plant created a false reality was handle really bad. Since we knew exactly what was happening the entire time it really had no suspense at all.

Then we she came out of it her "angry" look seemed more alien than anything else.

I'm on the fence with this one - much more than I was on The Flash at the same time in its first season.

And am I to understand that getting certain type of light bulbs installed can neutralize Supergirl??? WTF?

Any thoughts?

3 million dollar budget is too much for CBS. They're considering slashing the budget but might give it to CW instead since they might not want a low budget superhero show on the Tiffany network.

I never believed that on a channel like CBS that they could spend the proper budget *and* get the ratings they need. I'm frankly impressed that they got a full season in-- if they get to two and they actually get the budget they want... man, I'd be blown away. It'd be a hell of a coup for WB.

This show always belonged on CW, imo. The ratings they can pull for a Supergirl show would be good for CW, and they can put a lower-budget version out into the world without anyone batting an eye. If CBS churns out a lower-budget version, it certainly wouldn't improve the ratings *and* it would generate eye-rolls, as the expectations for quality production are much higher there. This would make total sense.

I believe they have to pay 3 million just to get the license to use her if I read right, so that plus a budget. This show may not be back and if so, would guess a short lease.

efault" target="_blank">http://www.avclub.com/article/supergirl-gets-picked-second-season-cw-236697?utm_source=Twitter&utm_medium=SocialMarketing&utm_campaign=Default: efault

Supergirl has been renewed for a second season that will air on The CW instead of CBS, and Kara’s hometown of National City is going to look a lot more Canadian than it used to. It’s still too early to say how much of a direct impact this will have on the show itself—especially in terms of special effects, sets, and the cast—but The Hollywood Reporter says that star Melissa Benoist will be making the move (obviously), along with Calista Flockhart, who had previously suggested that she’d prefer to stay in Los Angeles if the show did move. That should be good news to Supergirl fans, as Benoist and Flockhart were the two most reliably entertaining parts of the first season. Plus, the odds of her getting to hang out with the Flash again just got a lot better.
