"Anyone else underwhelmed with 2014 awards seasons films?"

Looking over the upcoming last quarter of yearly films, going to some festivals, and it just sort of struck me.
I ain't checking for much this year.
Foxcatcher, David Fincher jawn, the Michael Keaton movie and uh.......
Anyone else feeling this way?
What are you checking for?

I honestly haven't seen every trailer for the films coming out this winter, but.....
The few that I peeped, don't really impress me much.
So far, I can't name one movie in 2014 that I would want to watch again.
I dont know, but.... these "award season" films just look bland. Trite even.
That James Brown biopic was pretty good.

I see folks here gettin geeked up over almost every Hollywood film (by the usual suspects), but I need something different. Any recommendations?

September:
- heard terrific things about The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby
- A Walk Among The Tombstones may not be awards material, but Scott Frank is a strong writer and the trailer is eerie as shit
- The Boxtrolls. All hail Laika!
- as one of the few here who loved Cosmopolis, I'm insanely excited about Cronenberg's next, Maps to the Stars

October:
- Fincher, duh
- Birdman, duh
- heard terrific things about Whiplash
- The Judge will probably be all sorts of sappy, but fuck it, that cast will have me there Day 1
- Men, Women, and Children has a terrific trailer and cast, so I'll wash Labor Day out of my memory and hope Reitman hit a homer
- Dear White People was the most talked about flick at Sundance, I'm excited to finally see this
- Listen Up Phillip and Force Majeure-- both unlikely to make an awards splash, but both getting great notices from critics I trust
- St. Vincent, can't rule out Bill Murray

November:
- Nolan, duh
- Fury, duh
- Foxcatcher, duh
- The Imitation Game, because I LOVED Tyldum's last flick, and early notices are insanely strong
- The Homesman, because I love TLJ and Westerns
- Big Hero 6, the first Marvel/Disney animation collab, love the trailer

December:
- new PTA, duh
- I'll see anything Mike Leigh does, so I'm in for Mr. Turner
- Ava DuVernay is an exceptional artist, so Selma is near the top of my anticipated list for the year
- as a musical guy, I'm praying for Into the Woods and holding out hope
- not super excited for Unbroken, but I'm fascinated to see what early notices are like-- Jolie as a director intrigues me

Yeah, even if I knocked off half of these, there's still plenty to excite me about the upcoming season.

Cause they moved up the date, now they had to push back Nightcrawler by 2 weeks.

Trailer for Nightcrawler is dope, but Gilroy as director is untested, and at least two of the movies he's written were bland garbage.

Fury, we know what we're getting. David Ayer grizzled dudes all in a tank together. IN.

And his best was End of Watch.

Training Day was Antoine Fuqua, Denzel, and Ethan.

Otherwise, yea...

I'd rather get excited for a guy who's written a couple of really good movies and directed one really good movie (and one good movie, though I'm mostly alone on Sabotage admittedly) than for a guy who hasn't written or directed a single really good movie.

But we can agree to disagree. Besides, the main point is-- I'm excited for both films, and there's plenty to get excited about down the stretch this year.

I haven't watched it in about seven years, so I may be misremembering how good it was, but I really liked it at the time.

all these...and don't forget A MOST VIOLENT YEAR, DARK PLACES (Charlize Theron is starring in Gillian Flynn's book BEFORE Gone Girl that was adapted into a film. Corey Stoll is in this also, as is Christina Hendricks and Chloe Grace Moretz among others)

I'm sorry but this is a GREAT damn oscar bait season. SHIT i'm upset i'll MISS most of these during the fall...

cause Nightcrawler, ALL of the The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby films (His, Hers, Them), Dark Places, Gone Girl, Unbroken, Selma, A Most Violent Year, Inherent Vice, Fury, Black and White, Two Days, One Night, 99 Homes, etc. are MUST SEES for me....

So I can't wait for these films to play out here.
