"Transformers the movie... the cartoon version appreciation post"
Rewatched this with my son and I noticed how much better this version is than the live action ones. I guess that's not necessarily saying much, but at least this one had some sort of plot. I enjoyed Hot Rod's transformation from an arrogant and laid back dude to their leader by the end (even liked the foreshadowing where he was the first one to pick up the matrix after Prime dropped it). The Dinobots vs. Devastator... Autobots and Decepticons actually dying (yeah, this was kind of grim for my son to take... forgot about all the other transformers that died)... the hero's journey... the music... pretty dope for a cartoon flick.

I got shitted on for my comment in the other post for wanting a director that had seen the source material
but I agree, the show had a lot of corny moments but their were some good story arcs and plot that the Bay movies just don't care about. The animated movie was awesome for its time and every 8 year old boy shed a tear when Optimus died.
Adding Judd Nelson, Robert Stack, Leonard Nimoy and Orson Welles as voice actors was dope. And they snuck in "oh shit"

Such a dark tone compared to the cartoons.

Unfortunately they both died (because of goofy hot rod). You wanna talk about substitute teachers, rodimus prime was a joke. Still the movie was outstanding seeing prime whip about ten decepticons and then get mace windo'd in retrospect was awesome. Seeing starscream getting destroyed at his own coronation was equally impressive. The quintessen planet was fun. Just a great experience for a youngster

The tone was so different from the cartoons. The stakes were so high, it was as if someone heard the criticism that this show was strictly to showcase toys and that there was never any plot. So they said fuck it, lets go hard and give you everything that you've ever wanted out of this franchise. Plus we're going to add some drama. The scene where the Decepts came onto the Autobot ship is fucking Brutal. Ripping the doors open, and then slaying everyone even Ironhide. It was some shit folks just weren't ready for. You think you're going in to see an extra long version of the cartoon and then this shit comes on.
- Its crazy because up until this time you know Optimus was really a bad dude, but you'd never seen it. Until they cranked up that 'You got the Touch' and you saw there was a reason why he's the baddest dude in the galaxy. He's not this fumbling inept hand to hand kat that gets wrecked in EVERY live action film. Dude was a serious G.
- The emphasis on characters, I mean everyone thought UltraMagnus was going to be the next, but nope he threw out the first curse word and went out like a pile metal.
- Wreck-gar and Dare to be stupdid. Bah weep granaweep Ninnybong! Nuff Said
- Here's a Hint! (nuff said)
- Seriously this is an incredible film.
They tried to carry over the tone to the regular cartoons later on, it just didn't stick.

Yo... And Megatron blasts him in his head... "Such heroic nonsense"
Even the battle on Autobot City was dope and not anything you'd expect from the cartoons.

In one of the features of the DVD, they explain the original idea was that when Galvatron attacks Autobot city with the new Decepticons, they kill off the vast majority of the rest of the "series one and series two" Autobots. If you notice, they just disappear after they leave Earth; I don't even think they were in the subsequent cartoons. For whatever reason, they decided not to "film"/animate it, but if it was in there, I imagine it would have further traumatized a lot of kids.
It's interesting because in that feature, one of the producers/directors talks about how if they knew how much kids were going to freak out, they never would have killed Optimus Prime. But another guy correctly points out that killing Optimus Prime is what gave the movie its emotional resonance.

Re-watched it a few years ago, and the first half of it still holds up: the two attacks on Autobot city, the death of Optimus Prime, Megatron meeting Unicron, and Galvatron waxing Starscream. But a lot of the city after the Autobots flee Earth is kind of corny. Didn't feel the stuff with Wreckgar or even the stuff with the Quintessons. It does get better with the final attack on Cybetron, but that after a half an hour or so of blah.

Honestly, who greenlit a movie in which they killed all the old toys in order to introduce new ones. I'd like to shake that man's hand.
"In the next season (3), we were going to have all these new characters, and people are going to be wondering what happened to the old characters that they liked so much. What we knew, in a business sense, is that they had been discontinued, because they were the 1984/1985 (toy)line – but, we needed to tie them off. So, we had this one scene where the Autobots basically had to run through a gauntlet of Decepticons. Which basically wiped out the entire '84 product line in one massive "charge of the light brigade". So, whoever wasn't discontinued, stumbled to the end. That scene didn’t make it into the finished movie. But if you think kids were locking themselves in the bedroom over Optimus Prime, basically in that scene they would've seen their entire toy collection wiped out."
